Toxic Town: IBM, Pollution, and Industrial Risks, by Peter C. Little

In 1924, IBM built its first plant in Endicott, New York. Now, Endicott is a contested toxic waste site. With its landscape thoroughly contaminated by carcinogens, Endicott is the subject of one of the nation’s largest corporate-state mitigation efforts. Yet despite the efforts of IBM and the U.S. government, Endicott residents remain skeptical that the mitigation systems employed were designed with their best interests at heart.     In Toxic Town, Peter C. Little tracks and critically diagnoses the experiences of Endicott residents as they learn to live with high-tech pollution, community transformation, scientific expertise, corporate-state power, and risk mitigation technologies. By weaving together the insights of anthropology, political ecology, disaster studies, and science and technology studies, the book explores questions of theoretical and practical import for understanding the politics of risk and the ironies of technological disaster response in a time when IBM’s stated mission is to build a “Smarter Planet.”    Little critically reflects on IBM’s new corporate tagline, arguing for a political ecology of corporate social and environmental responsibility and accountability that places the social and environmental politics of risk mitigation front and center. Ultimately, Little argues that we will need much more than hollow corporate taglines, claims of corporate responsibility, and attempts to mitigate high-tech disasters to truly build a smarter planet.

Review
"This carefully crafted ethnographic account affirms the deep and adverse footprint of market-based industrial production on contemporary human lives and communities.  By exploring the personal experience of exposure to the toxic risk produced by irresponsible corporate actions in a contaminated community, Little tells the occupational and environment story of our times: deindustrialization has left behind doubly damaged communities but helped to spark hope-affirming grassroots activism.  This book makes clear the contributions of anthropology to the framing of a political ecological theory of human-environmental relations."-Merrill Singer,University of Connecticut at Storrs

“[T]his is an important and well-researched study of the ‘surfacing narratives’ of the U.S. tech industry’s erstwhile model village that tragically descended into ‘Computer Age ruin.’”-American Anthropologist

“Takes studies of contaminated communities into the 21st century—drawing out the sobering limits of environmental remediation and mitigation, and the way industrial decline both dissolves and calls out community. Little makes Vapor Intrusion—and the challenges it creates for science, regulation, and those living within it—into a sentinel condition of our times. The book is beautifully analyzed and written, and darkly evocative. Nuanced, but nevertheless maddening.” -Kim Fortun,Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

"This intense local study offers an important contribution, melding a keen application of key concepts in science and technology studies with ethnographic engagement with local people deeply affected by living with the consequences of the Computer Age.  Toxic Town will be of interest not only to anthropologists but to scholars across many disciplines who seek to understand triumphal technocapitalism’s central role in creating and sustaining the pollution crisis.”-Medical Anthropology Quarterly

Sells like Teen Spirit: Music, Youth Culture, and Social Crisis, by Ryan Moore

Music has always been central to the cultures that young people create, follow, and embrace. In the 1960s, young hippie kids sang along about peace with the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez and tried to change the world. In the 1970s, many young people ended up coming home in body bags from Vietnam, and the music scene changed, embracing punk and bands like The Sex Pistols. In Sells Like Teen Spirit, Ryan Moore tells the story of how music and youth culture have changed along with the economic, political, and cultural transformations of American society in the last four decades. By attending concerts, hanging out in dance clubs and after-hour bars, and examining the do-it-yourself music scene, Moore gives a riveting, first-hand account of the sights, sounds, and smells of “teen spirit.”

Moore traces the histories of punk, hardcore, heavy metal, glam, thrash, alternative rock, grunge, and riot grrrl music, and relates them to wider social changes that have taken place. Alongside the thirty images of concert photos, zines, flyers, and album covers in the book, Moore offers original interpretations of the music of a wide range of bands including Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Metallica, Nirvana, and Sleater-Kinney. Written in a lively, engaging, and witty style, Sells Like Teen Spirit suggests a more hopeful attitude about the ways that music can be used as a counter to an overly commercialized culture, showcasing recent musical innovations by youth that emphasize democratic participation and creative self-expression—even at the cost of potential copyright infringement.

Review

“With endearing authenticity and proper reverence, Moore skillfully articulates the brutal social truths that compel young people to create meaning and subculture out of chaos and anomie. Somewhere, Walter Benjamin and the Ramones are slamming through another brilliant set shouting, ‘Hey ho, let’s go!!’ ”
-Donna Gaines, author of A Misfit’s Manifesto: The Sociological Memoir of a Rock & Roll Heart

“Moore’s deeply personal take on the historical significance of heavy metal is also a refreshing addition to the independent music canon.”
-CampusProgress.org

“Sells Like Teen Spirit combines a fascinating ethnography of San Diego’s punk subculture with a profound rumination on the exhaustion of social movements and the emptiness of consumer culture in our society. Moore helps us see how large changes in economics and social relations manifest themselves in seemingly small sites and practices in our everyday lives.”

-George Lipsitz, author of Footsteps in the Dark: The Hidden Histories of Popular Music

“Moore’s strength is his obvious admiration for the bands and genres he highlights. He is a first-class music journalist and historian and when he delves into a particular subculture like the “econo” ethos of the Minutemen, the Dickies use of “snortcore” or Minor Threat’s creation of straightedge, the reader is richly rewarded.

-PopMatters.com

"In his book Sells Like Teen Spirit: Music Youth Culture and Social Crisis, Ryan Moore brilliantly situates the histories of several musical styles within the political, economic, and social changes that lead to the development of an assortment of rock subgenres. Moore's engaging book is for scholars of youth culture, pop culture, and any who are interested in music history."-Douglas N. Evans,Journal of Youth and Adolescence

"Moore successfully positions the culture of white working-class and middle-class youths alongside that of working-class African Americans within the political economy of deindustrialization."-Eileen Luhr,Southern California Quarterly

Great read
By Lrockcaligirl
Ryan Moore has written a book which both analyzes and contextualizes the current situation of youth subculture. Being a huge fan of punk rock I enjoyed this book because it recognizes the impact that this and other genres have on a individual during their formative years. This book also takes a critical look at capitalism and the effects of pop culture as an industry on society. This book is successful putting what the average American youth is confronted with and explains where the roots of certain subculture lies lie. This is the story of my youth explained to me intelligently.

*Sells* is worth the price of admission (and much more)
By randalman
Ryan Moore's excellent book covers a wide range of "youth culture and crisis" in the US, and does so with aplomb. Like a good sociologist, he demonstrates in clear prose the connection between the economic crises and the manifestations of those crises in the domains of music culture. Like a good fan, he communicates the thrill of what music can mean to American adolescents.

As he notes in the first chapter, "rock music and the hippie counterculture were shaped by a rebellion against the qualitative consequences of Fordism and embedded liberalism, and ... punk was the signal that these movements were exhausted and co-opted in the new social context of the 1970s." It's a mouthful, for sure, but he provides enough structure for the undergraduate or lay reader to make sense of a nuanced argument, and engages a rich variety of sources to hold the interest of cultural scholars, too.

The usual suspects -- The Ramones, Lester Bangs -- make appearances, but South Park's Mr. Hanky Poo (perhaps the punkest character on South Park) and Black Flag's Chuck Dubowski are given their due, too. The text is a fine example of cultural materialism, includes a smart and sensitive ethnography of the San Diego "scene" of the mid-late 1990s, and offers a smart, smart survey of the alternative scene and its re-presentation and integration by the culture industry.

For the scholarly types: Adorno and Benjamin make their obligatory appearances at the end, and Moore breathes new life into that long-standing argument.

A must-have if you were there, and a must-have for anyone who wants to understand (the use value and exchange value of) Teen Spirit.

Graffiti Lives: Beyond the Tag in New York's Urban Underground (Alternative Criminology), by Gregory J. Snyder

On the sides of buildings, on bridges, billboards, mailboxes, and street signs, and especially in the subway and train tunnels, graffiti covers much of New York City. Love it or hate it, graffiti, from the humble tag to the intricate piece (short for masterpiece), is an undeniable part of the cityscape.

In Graffiti Lives, Gregory J. Snyder offers a fascinating and rare look into this world of contemporary graffiti culture. A world in which kids, often, shoplift for spray paint, scale impossibly high places to find a great spot to “get up,” run from the police, journey into underground train tunnels, fight over turf, and spend countless hours perfecting their style. Over the ten years Snyder studied this culture he even created a few works himself (under the moniker “GWIZ”), found himself serving as a lookout for other artists engaged in this illegal activity, spent time in the train tunnels in search of new work, created a blackbook for writers to tag, and took countless photographs to document this world — over sixty included in the book.

A combination of amazing “flicks” and exhilarating prose, Graffiti Lives is ultimately an exploration into how graffiti writers define themselves. Snyder details that writers are not bound together by appearance or language or birthplace or class but by what they do. And what they do is reach for fame, painting their names as prominently as they can. What’s more, he discovers that, though many public officials think graffiti writing will only lead to other criminal activity, many graffiti writers have turned their youthful exploits into adult careers — from professional aerosol muralists and fine artists to designers of all kinds, employed in such fields as tattooing, studio art, magazine production, fashion, and guerilla marketing. In fact, some of the artists featured have gone on to international acclaim and to their own gallery shows. Snyder’s illuminating work shows that getting up tags, throw-ups, and pieces on New York City’s walls and subway tunnels can lead to getting out into the city’s competitive professional world. Graffiti Lives details the exciting, risky, and surprisingly rewarding pursuits of contemporary graffiti writers.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In his first book, fan and socio-anthropologist Snyder doesn't just celebrate urban street art and its rising stars, but takes a thorough look at its history and future, the language of public art and the idea of the graffiti artist as criminal-including an intriguing challenge to the "broken windows theory" cited by law enforcement and NYC government officials as central to their efforts. Along the way he decodes a backdoor in the East Village covered with a dozen different tags-"in the same way that the sedimentary layers of ancient ruins inspire archaeologists to tell tales of past civilizations"-profiles rising and established stars, and takes a raw, detailed tour of the scene with guidance from writers like ESPO, MEK, and AMAZE (their trip through the "Freedom Tunnel" from 72nd Street to 125th Street under Riverside Drive is especially exciting). Snyder's "the kids are alright" assessment, buttressed by many examples of thrill-seeking taggers finding successful careers in art, design, publishing, and (commissioned) mural-painting, is well-articulated, convincing, and quite possibly reassuring for the urbanites living among (or perhaps raising) today's writers and bombers.

Review

“Graffiti writers, the book argues, cannot be understood merely as practitioners of vandalism and social disorder, but also as members of a diverse subculture who, in many cases, have used their experiences to build legitimate careers.”

"Graffiti lives! proclaims author Snyder in this new, vaguely academic account of graffiti in the urban underground—particularly New York."
-New York Post

“The book contributes to our understanding of graffiti, getting beyond simple explanations of graffiti or generalizations about graffiti writers.  Open-minded art lovers, as well as visual sociologists, will enjoy the integration between images and text….Snyder’s book makes an admirable contribution toward our understanding of this fascinating form of vandalism, art, resistance, space claiming, and identity making.”-Social Forces

Must have urban ethnography
By Jason Patch
Finally a scholarly analysis of graffiti that's not stuck in the 1970s. Anyone doing urban ethnography should check this book out. The author's methodology appendix offers up innovative and creative research techniques. Plus, anyone following Shepard Fairey or Banksy will appreciate the discussion of the career trajectories less well-known writers take as they move away from the street.

The evolution of a subculture.
By S. Rivera
Remember that the graffiti scene in the 1970's and 1980's was a subculture that was very important to the evolution of the actual art that came from it (which we see in the 1990's until now). In the future "graffiti art" as we think of it today will be known as one of the few original artforms that came from the U.S.A. There are not many artforms that can say that. To me this is something important to write about and I thank the writer for understanding this. Those who critisize him are obviously ignorant to what they are talking about. They do not know what is like to come from a city where the people, architecture, and system of things tells you everyday that "you are worth nothing and do not matter". That frame of thought was the spark that started it all.
This is an excellent book that delves deep into the lives and culture of graffiti artists.

Thorough
By The Name You See
This book helped me in a research paper I did in college. I already know a lot about graffiti but this was deeper than I thought it would be. It got to the reasons why people write and even talks about the demographics involved (most people think they know all about this part but they don't). If you are an outsider to the graffiti world, and think you know about graffiti, or maybe even hate graffiti, you should read this book. It might change the way you see it.

New York Murder Mystery: The True Story Behind the Crime Crash of the 1990s, by Andrew Karmen

Andrew Karmen tracks a quarter century of murder in the city Americans have most commonly associated with rampant street crime. Providing both a local and a national context for New York's plunging crime rate, Karmen tests and debunks the many self-serving explanations for the decline. While crediting a more effective police force for its efforts, Karmen also emphasizes the decline of the crack epidemic, skyrocketing incarceration rates, favorable demographic trends, a healthy economy, an influx of hard working and law abiding immigrants, a rise in college enrollment, and an unexpected outbreak of improved behavior by young men growing up in poverty stricken neighborhoods. New York Murder Mystery is the most authoritative study to date of why crime rates rise and fall.

Review

“With this elegant sweep, the author has parted the curtain to reveal a gaseous windbag behind the bombast attending the miraculous claims of today's wizards. Bravo.”
-Tony Bouza, Law Enforcement News

“Systematically debunks popularly accepted reasons for the crime crash by wedding closely analyzed statistical data with common sense and historical precedent. . . . After reading this book, one thing becomes certain: today's New York isn't what it used to be.”
-Villager

“New York Murder Mystery is long overdue. It provides a well-written, illuminating analysis of an issue often subject to self-serving and simplistic sound-bites. Guided by Karmen’s thoughtful and thorough presentation, we come to understand all the factors contributing to the last decade's crime drop. We learn to credit not only new police tactics, demographics declines, and a prosperous economy but also the many thousands of youth who practiced wisdom and discipline in avoiding the self-defeating behavior patterns of their older friends and relatives.”
-Robert Gangi,Executive Director, The Correctional Association

“Karmen has written a book that anyone interested in the New York City crime story should read. Nobody has written about the NYC drop in crime more comprehensively or more even-handedly. This book assesses a complicated story with an air of confidence and produces a convincing analysis. Those who think they already know the story are bound to be surprised by what they read here, and those who want to draw policy conclusions for New York's experience will find Karmen’s reliable analysis helps them avoid some of the pitfalls in the cyclical fads of criminal justice reform.”
-Todd R. Clear,President of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences

Long Overdue: The Politics of Racial Reparations, by Charles P. Henry

Ever since the unfulfilled promise of “forty acres and a mule,” America has consistently failed to confront the issue of racial injustice. Exploring why America has failed to compensate Black Americans for the wrongs of slavery, Long Overdue provides a history of the racial reparations movement and shows why it is an idea whose time has come.

Martin Luther King, Jr., remarked in his “I Have a Dream” speech that America has given Black citizens a “bad check” marked “insufficient funds.” Yet apart from a few Black nationalists, the call for reparations has been peripheral to Black policy demands. Charles P. Henry examines Americans’unwillingness to confront this economic injustice, and crafts a skillful moral, political, economic, and historical argument for African American reparations, focusing on successful political cases.

In the wake of recent successes in South Africa and New Zealand, new models for reparations have recently found traction in a number of American cities and states, from Dallas to Baltimore and Virginia to California. By looking at other dispossessed groups—Native Americans, Holocaust survivors, and Japanese internment victims in the 1940s—Henry shows how some groups have won the fight for reparations.

As Hurricane Katrina made apparent, the legacy of racial segregation and economic disadvantage is never far below the surface in America. Long Overdue provides an up-to-date survey of the political and legislative efforts that are now breaking the surface to move reparations into the heart of our national discussion about race.

Review

“Long Overdue offers one of the finest and most comprehensive discussions to date of the historical and international context for reparations claims on behalf of African Americans by explaining why reparations are rejected and describing the barriers facing those who ask for them.”

-Journal of American Ethnic History

“Henry offers a simply superb interrogation of the Black reparations movement that is distinguished by its attention to history, social movements theory, and global context. The case studies presented here provide contrasting examples of reparations in distinct time periods and highlight political mobilization on local, national, and international scales. Long Overdue compellingly illustrates how distinct demands for reparations have been historically articulated, how they have converged with Black nationalist thought, and how they have influenced the broader public discourse on race and racism. An essential read for a contentious debate.”

-Michael Omi,co-author of Racial Formation in the United States: From the 1960s to the 1990s

“Reparations for the continuing legacy of American racism is the central civil rights issue of the twenty-first century. Henry’s bold and insightful Long Overdue provides a detailed examination of the current rationale for compensation to African Americans. Long Overdue skillfully explores the political debate and controversies surrounding reparations, and provides constructive suggestions for what the movement needs in order to achieve its policy objectives.”

-Manning Marable, author of Let Nobody Turn Us Around

“Henry’s work is really one designed to facilitate and urge political mobilization through a change in the culture and politics of reparations.”
-Journal of American History

We all have opinions about the television shows we watch, but television criticism is about much more than simply evaluating the merits of a particular show and deeming it ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Rather, criticism uses the close examination of a television program to explore that program’s cultural significance, creative strategies, and its place in a broader social context.

How to Watch Television brings together forty original essays from today’s leading scholars on television culture, writing about the programs they care (and think) the most about. Each essay focuses on a particular television show, demonstrating one way to read the program and, through it, our media culture. The essays model how to practice media criticism in accessible language, providing critical insights through analysis—suggesting a way of looking at TV that students and interested viewers might emulate. The contributors discuss a wide range of television programs past and present, covering many formats and genres, spanning fiction and non-fiction, broadcast and cable, providing a broad representation of the programs that are likely to be covered in a media studies course. While the book primarily focuses on American television, important programs with international origins and transnational circulation are also covered.

Addressing television series from the medium’s earliest days to contemporary online transformations of television, How to Watch Television is designed to engender classroom discussion among television critics of all backgrounds.

Review
“This book, unlike the manual that comes with your TV set, is utterly readable, highly engaging, and worth referring back to, long after you’ve switched on your favorite channel. . . . Regardless of which essay one chooses to tune in to, How to Watch Television is an accessible and impressive group of essays by a powerhouse cast of television scholars.”-Journal of American Culture

"Ask anyone in Hollywood and they’ll tell you the movies are dead. TV is where it’s at, and this book will show you why. Thompson and Mittell offer an essential guide to television today, featuring the most insightful critics writing about the most creative and engaging shows. Whether student, fan, or TV professional, it belongs on your bookshelf."-Michael Curtin,co-author of The American Television Industry

"There’s quite simply no book out there that can match this in scope and quality. The contributors are a 'Who’s Who' of contemporary television studies, and the prose is engaging and highly readable. If you’re looking for models of how to think about television from a range of perspectives, you need look no further."-Greg M. Smith, author of Beautiful TV: The Art and Argument of Ally McBeal

“There’s not a single dull page in this book.”

-Jose Solis,Popmatters

"What happens when you give 40 smart television scholars ten pages each to write about a television show that interests them? You get a delightful book that is sure to become a favorite of television scholars and students alike. Thompson and Mittell have brought together authors who provide thoughtful criticism in an engaging style and cover just about every genre, historical period, and lens of analysis. Each essay's combination of brevity and detailed analysis makes the book likely to work well as both a course reader for undergraduates in television studies and a reference resource for those wanting to dive into research on individual shows. Though every essay adds something valuable to the collection, essays on Mad Men, Glee, M*A*S*H, I Love Lucy, Modern Family, NYPD Blue, The Twilight Zone, and The Walking Dead are worth the price of this fun, informative, and useful book, even for seasoned television scholars. Summing Up: Highly recommended."-S. Pepper,Choice

"[I]t is a damn good collection, featuring 40 different contributions from American scholars, plus Matt Hills from Aberystwyth and Roberta Pearson from Nottingham. Their contributions are organised under five main themes: Aesthetics and Style; TV Representations: Social Identity and Cultural Politics; TV Politics: Democracy, Nation, and the Public Interest; TV Industry: Industrial Practices and Structures; and TV Practices: Medium, Technology, and Everyday Life. As with television schedules, it is easy to flick and pick and read—indeed, the editors in their Introduction actively encourage ‘readers to go straight to a particular program or approach that interests them.'"-Geoff Lealand,CST Online

"With their urging in the introduction about how the essays serve as models for writing your own criticism, the editors seem to be addressing media studies students. But because of its well-commissioned and well-balanced tone and diversity/specificity of texts, it is just as instructive for a wide range of burgeoning or established TV scholars as well as inquisitive fans of the various programs. The collection manages to be potentially enjoyable and useful to scholars and TV fans alike."-Kathleen Collins,Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly

After the Rebellion: Black Youth, Social Movement Activism, and the Post-Civil Rights Generation, by Sekou M. Franklin

What happened to black youth in the post-civil rights generation? What kind of causes did they rally around and were they even rallying in the first place? After the Rebellion takes a close look at a variety of key civil rights groups across the country over the last 40 years to provide a broad view of black youth and social movement activism.  Based on both research from a diverse collection of archives and interviews with youth activists, advocates, and grassroots organizers, this book examines popular mobilization among the generation of activists – principally black students, youth, and young adults – who came of age after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Franklin argues that the political environment in the post-Civil Rights era, along with constraints on social activism, made it particularly difficult for young black activists to start and sustain popular mobilization campaigns.

Building on case studies from around the country—including New York, the Carolinas, California, Louisiana, and Baltimore—After the Rebellion explores the inner workings and end results of activist groups such as the Southern Negro Youth Congress, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Student Organization for Black Unity, the Free South Africa Campaign, the New Haven Youth Movement, the Black Student Leadership Network, the Juvenile Justice Reform Movement, and the AFL-CIO’s Union Summer campaign.  Franklin demonstrates how youth-based movements and intergenerational campaigns have attempted to circumvent modern constraints, providing insight into how the very inner workings of these organizations have and have not been effective in creating change and involving youth. A powerful work of both historical and political analysis, After the Rebellion provides a vivid explanation of what happened to the militant impulse of young people since the demobilization of the civil rights and black power movements – a discussion with great implications for the study of generational politics, racial and black politics, and social movements.

Review
“This is an important book that examines the changing context of youth activism in the post-civil rights era. Sekou M. Franklin explores the dilemma youth activists since the 1960s have faced between pursuing transformative social movement activism versus engaging in mobilization focused on leveraging the institutional resources now available in the post-civil rights era. Anyone committed to understanding or promoting activism among youth of color needs to read this book.”-Cathy Cohen, author of Democracy Remixed: Black Youth and the Future of American Politics

"Where others have bemoaned the absence of youth activism after the ‘70’s, Franklin’s impressive scholarship finds thoughtful, creative, and impactful Black youth activism into the 2000’s. Both theoretical and practical in approach, this book will require the rethinking of several well-worn narratives about Black youth activism in the post-civil rights generations."-Charles M. Payne, author of I've Got the Light of Freedom

“After the Rebellion is an exceptional work. Franklin’s keen analysis is a welcomed antidote to the clichés and wish fulfillment that hinder conventional thinking about youth politics and so-called hip-hop activism.”-Cedric Johnson, author of Revolutionaries to Race Leaders: Black Power and the Making of African American Politi

Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures and Other Latina Longings proposes a theory of sexual politics that works in the interstices between radical queer desires and the urgency of transforming public policy, between utopian longings and everyday failures. Considering the ways in which bodily movement is assigned cultural meaning, Juana María Rodríguez takes the stereotypes of the hyperbolically gestural queer Latina femme body as a starting point from which to discuss how gestures and forms of embodiment inform sexual pleasures and practices in the social realm.

Centered on the sexuality of racialized queer female subjects, the book’s varied archive—which includes burlesque border crossings, daddy play, pornography, sodomy laws, and sovereignty claims—seeks to bring to the fore alternative sexual practices and machinations that exist outside the sightlines of mainstream cosmopolitan gay male culture. Situating articulations of sexual subjectivity between the interpretive poles of law and performance, Rodríguez argues that forms of agency continually mediate among these various structures of legibility—the rigid confines of the law and the imaginative possibilities of the performative. She reads the strategies of Puerto Rican activists working toward self-determination alongside sexual performances on stage, in commercial pornography, in multi-media installations, on the dance floor, and in the bedroom. Rodríguez examines not only how projections of racialized sex erupt onto various discursive mediums but also how the confluence of racial and gendered anxieties seeps into the gestures and utterances of sexual acts, kinship structures, and activist practices.

Ultimately, Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures, and Other Latina Longings reveals —in lyrical style and explicit detail—how sex has been deployed in contemporary queer communities in order to radically reconceptualize sexual politics.

Review
“Through sensuous and seductive prose, Juana María Rodríguez demonstrates how queer gesture highlights the tension between socially inscribed corporeal regulation and agential enactments of subjectivity. Pivoting away from this binary through a reading of Latina excess, Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures, and Other Latina Longings demands that we radically reclaim abject sex as a site of queer futurity.”-E. Patrick Johnson, author of Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South―An Oral History

“Fun, sensual, and theoretically sophisticated, Sexual Futures, Queer Gestures, and Other Latina Longings questions facile binary oppositions by exploring the intricate and perverse world of fantasy and pleasure, particularly in contexts in which marginality, submission, and racialization seem to foreclose key moments of identification for queer subjects of color.”-Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel, author of Coloniality of Diasporas: Rethinking Intra-Colonial Migrations in a Caribbean Context

Lesbian Erotics (The Cutting Edge: Lesbian Life and Literature Series), by Karla Jay

The question of whether lesbians have sex, how they have sex, and when they began having sex has long obsessively preoccupied the heterosexual imagination. Today, discussions of lesbian sex abound with such terms as romantic friendships, stealth lesbians, and genitally sexual. As we approach the end of the twentieth century, lesbian sexuality remains hotly contested ground. What exactly qualifies as lesbian sex? What is the relationship, if any, between lesbian erotica and heterosexual pornography? How did the issue of sex in lesbian communities come to be such a fiercely debated subject?

Lesbian Erotics is the first anthology to investigate the cultural production of sexually charged images of lesbians in film, law, literature, and popular culture in general. The contributors address an enormous range of sexualities and fora in which these sexualities flourish. In her chapter, Not Tonight, Dear, I'm Deconstructing a Headache: Confessions of a Lesbian Sex Therapist, Marny Hall illustrates how difficult some women find it to maintain erotic tension in lesbian relationships. Elizabeth Meese grapples with increasingly complex sexual identities in cyperspace. Kitty Tsui, cover model for On Our Backs, relays how she developed her own body into an art form in order to combat stereotypes of passive and invisible Asian women.

This work, as Karla Jay writes in the introduction, invites readers to consider the implications, variations, and complexities of lesbian erotics. In the end, it is our sexual lives that mark us as outlaws. Therefore, we need to investigate and engage representations of our sexuality to define for ourselves, if we so choose, the scope, shape, and permutations of lesbian erotics.

Review

"A very great gift: compelling, complex, courageous, and stunning. Everyone interested in love and lust, passion and power, history and literature, will want to read Karla Jay's timely, arousing, important anthology."

-Blanche Wiesen Cook, author of Eleanor Roosevelt, vol. I

"Karla Jay is one of the authentic pioneers of lesbian studies. Here she brings together 16 essays on the once-taboo, now gloriously `speakable' subject of lesbian sexuality. Illuminating, often funny, full of thought and emotion and a continuous, speculative intellectual energy, the essays tell a fascinating collective story about lesbian desires, past and present, and the controversial places of female homosexuality in modern society."

-Terry Castle, author of The Apparitional Lesbian: Female Homosexuality and Modern Culture
