About the Author
Jessie Klein is Assistant Professor of Sociology/Criminal Justice at Adelphi University. Over the last two decades, she also led and administered high school guidance programs. She served as a supervisor, school social worker, college adviser, social studies teacher, substance abuse prevention counselor and conflict resolution coordinator. Her writing appears in scholarly journals as well as popular media. Dr Jessica Klein's 'The Bully Society' is a must read for students, teachers and parents.
It is most distressing that in modern society the cancer of bullying in all of its destructive
forms is still very much part of school life and until serious measures are taken by those who
determine policy and those who perpetuate such behavior are brought to task, nothing will change.

Spot on

This work hits the mark. As a former educator I saw many of the examples she cites happening everyday. I really appreciate the fact that she addresses the adults as part of this bullying society. As a physical education teacher and coach, I, sadly, may have perpetuated some of the messages she addresses. We don't see it until we step back and look at it from the outside. The children in our schools are constantly bombarded with messaqes (physical, verbal, body langauge, shunning, etc.) that reinforce this bullying society. And, unfortunately, it will take a complete societal shift to change it. I think the first step is to get our educators to read this book. If you are a parent, think about buying a copy and donating it to your child's school. If you are an administrator, get a copy and ask all of your staff to read it. This book should be on the shelf of every conscientous, child-centered teacher in the country. (And no, I do not get a dime from the sale of this book.) I am just that passionate about the subject matter. As a former educator, and a parent of 6 children from pre-K through high school, I want to see this Bully Society shut down. Thank you Jessie Klein for an eye opening look at what is going on in our schools.

Nine Months after Publication and only TWO Reviews?

I found the book a week ago .. and then yesterday, the school shooting in Newton, CT. My timing is eerily on the mark. Oh my god, if people don't find their way to this book in the aftermath of the horrific shootings .. I hope they do. I was quite taken with Jean Twenge's GENERATION ME and the amount of research and studies she cited in her book. This one THE BULLY SOCIETY is equally well done and truly a book that is masterpiece in what it tries to get across to the readers - WE LIVE IN A BULLY SOCIETY now. Entitled kids, I-Deserve-It kids, lonely kids, bullied by other students kids, grow up to be .. bullies.

And many of the parents are big bullies too.

There is an entire hierarchy in our schools today and this is important to know because it is the law in America that all kids go to school until they are 18 which means, our kids are there 5 days/week, 6+ hours a day. So for most of our kids that school is the center point of their lives. What goes on at school IS setting the standards for our kids. And the schools survive & thrive on the Bully Culture.

People, I am begging you, read the book. It's frightening. Oh that must be why there are only two other reviews. Nobody is reading the book. I guess people don't read the important stuff? I guess Facebook and other trivial nonsense is more important? I really don't know and I really don't want to judge, I just want to get your attention although as a parent in the trenches with a few kids in middle and high school, I see what is going on, I see my kids getting bullied, I see my kids bully back in retaliation, I see the damage it causes and the scars that the kids carry for life. I see an overabundance of lonely, unconnected kids. I see kids on the school grounds and they don't talk, they text even to the person sitting right next to them. How stupid is THAT? But this is the culture now. These kids are too young to adequately or correctly process what is occurring. All they know is that they hurt and they are desperate to be accepted .. which for some means, at any cost.

I can't put the book down. The stories and statistics are horrifying and I believe they are true. The bullying incidents, the shootings & violence, the suicide rates are shooting up with these kids. Their lives are filled with nonsense and bullying. Our culture condones it in many ways. It has to stop. Just look at the national news today, the school shooting in Newton, CT, yesterday. IT HAS TO STOP.

Parents cannot be ignorant anymore. And parents have to stop being a part of the whole thing too. Bullying is everywhere. Other countries look at us and scratch their heads. The headline today in the LA TIMES was 'Shocked at the Shooting'. Well no, I'm not shocked. I'm saddened. But not shocked.

How much sadder can that comment be.

I implore everyone, read the book. Buy it or find it at the library but READ IT.

Outstanding social history of the Continental Army.

One of the least covered areas of American History in our schools is the American Revolution. Most texts gloss over the war and primarily concentrate on the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the various other aspects of how we became a country. Very little, if any, space is devoted to the men and women who actually won our independence through their valor and sacrifice and we constantly harbor the impression that an intense patriotism belied their motivation. Dr. Neimeyer breaks through the myths of our revolutionary forefathers and gives us a superb social history of who our revolutionary forefathers were and what their motivation for serving was. This was our first army and the last time our military services were integrated until 1950. Dr. neimeyer goes into depth concerning the various etnnic groups who made up the army and shatters many of the myths we grew up with. A superb text to add to any American History curriculum or for anyone who would like a more in-depth study of our ancestors.

Review: America Goes To War

Charles Patrick Neimeyer's "America Goes To War" was a well researched, documented, and written book. Neimeyer explains who served in the Continental Army, the reasons they served and the difficult lives the soldiers had. The text is annotated throughout with supporting evidence and an extensive bibliography gives the reader several sources for further study.
However Neimeyer's conclusions do have a leftest bias that caused this reader to question several of the interpretations of the information presented. Also very little of the warfare between the British and American armies was explored in this book and the affect it would have on the social history of the American Army.
Over all this is a good book to understand the men who served in the Continental Army and some of the reasons why.

A Rare Gem

Put simply, this book provides an excellent illustration of those served in the Continental Army. This book received one poor review from a reader that approached the book with his own agenda and ignoring the author's clearly stated intention. Neimeyer sets out to "show who served in the army during the Revolution, and why." He has done an excellent job.

While the author does bring up important topics (circular reasoning, inference, quoting out of context), these topics can be researched separately, using resources that the average reader will be more likely to benefit from.

The author introduces a topic or point, briefly explains what it is, but uses examples that do not adequately illustrate the importance of the topic. This becomes distracting quickly and makes it very difficult to gain any insight into what is being discussed.

Enjoyable Philosophy of History

Hoffer's book is a highly enjoyable visit of a wide range of philosophies, methods, and strategies of how to construct a history. As a jurist who confronts these difficulties on a daily basis in the courtroom I run into these issues, on a smaller scale. Hoffer confirms some of my ideas of the challenge that confronts a historian. How do we know what happened in the past? While it is important to make a finding of fact, the finding does not make it so. However, the finding of fact is necessary.

This is an easy to read discussion of a tenable philosophy of history for our time.

During World War II, all branches of the military had women's auxiliaries. Only the Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) program, however, was comprised entirely of women who flew dangerous missions more commonly associated with and desired by men.

Within military hierarchies, the World War II pilot was projected as the most dashing and desirable of servicemen. "Flyboys" were the daring elite of the United States military. More than the WACs (Army), WAVES (Navy), SPARS (Coast Guard), or Women Marines, the WASPs directly challenged these assumptions of male supremacy in wartime culture. WASPs flew the fastest fighter planes and heaviest bombers; they test-piloted experimental models and worked in the development of weapons systems. Yet the WASPs were the only women's auxiliary within the armed services of World War II that was not militarized.

In Clipped Wings, Molly Merryman draws upon military documents (many of which were declassified only in the 1980s), congressional records, and interviews with the women who served as WASPs during World War II, to trace the history of the over 1,000 pilots who served their country as the first women to fly military planes. She examines the social pressures which culminated in their disbandment in 1944—even though a wartime need for their services still existed—and documents their struggles and eventual success, in 1977, to gain military status and receive veterans benefits.

Wings paper

I purchased this book for my daughter who is in high school. She was writing a paper on the WASPS of WWII. She said that it was an excellent source of information for her paper - easy to read and well organized. This book was recommended to her by a former WASP and contains a wealth of information on this group of brave and determined women.

A history of the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII

*Clipped Wings* is a history of the disbanding of the U.S. Army Air Force Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II. Unfortunately, *Cliiped Wings* is dull reading, academic in the bad sense, which obscures the truth in two or three places in an effort to emphasize the sexism that existed in the 1940's.
The best book I have read about the Women Airforce Service Pilots is *Those Wonderful Women in Their Flying Machines,* by Sally Van Wagenen Kell. Second best is Marianne Verges' *On Silver Wings*.
*Clipped Wings* falis to point out that two women members of Congress, Clare Booth Luce and Margaret Chase Smith, voted to kill the WASPs in 1944. *Clipped Wings* also fails to say, as Marianne Verges demonstrates, that WASP leader Jacky Cochran did not do the best possible job of prolonging the existence of the WASP organization.
In addition, on page 26 of *Clipped Wings*, the author claims that "...WASPs [were used] for top secret missions involved with the Manhattan project," but the book does not substantiate this claim.
Finally, the last chapter of *Clipped Wings* is laden with turgid academese about "hegemony" and "gendering," which in regard to sexism in the 1940's, only belabors the obvious.

Wonderful and informative reclamation

This is the best of the books on the WASP program to be published to date. Relying on first-hand interviews and recently declassified documents, Clipped Wings consistently demonstrates that the US failed this group of dedicated veterans.
Of special importance is its amplication of feminist military critiques to an actual branch of the military, proving what before had been strictly theory. The best chapters are those that include numerous examples of media sexism and the ridiculous thought patterns of Congress--two elements of culture that unfortunately still impact women who enter male-dominated fields.

López locates the origins of Chicano literature, which is now and always has been “postnational,” encompassing the wealthy, the poor, the white, and the mestizo. Tracing its long history and the diversity of subject positions it encompasses, Chicano Nations explores the shifting literary forms authors have used to write the nation from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries.

López argues that while national and global tensions lie at the historical heart of Chicana/o narratives of the nation, there should be alternative ways to imagine the significance of Chicano literature other than as a reflection of national identity. In a nuanced analysis, the book provides a way to think of early writers as a meaningful part of Chicano literary history, and, in looking at the nation, rather than the particularities of identity, as that which connects Chicano literature over time, it engages the emerging hemispheric scholarship on U.S. literature.

In Selling ‘em By the Sack, David Gerard Hogan traces the history of the hamburger's rise as a distinctive American culinary and ethnic symbol through the prism of one of its earliest promoters. The first to market both the hamburger and the "to go" carry-out style to American consumers, White Castle quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the fast food industry. Its founder, Billy Ingram, shrewdly marketed his hamburgers in large quantities at five cents a piece, telling his customers to "Buy'em by the Sack."

The years following World War II saw the rise of great franchised chains such as McDonald's, which challenged and ultimately overshadowed the company that Billy Ingram founded. Yet White Castle stands as a charismatic pioneer in one of America's most formidable industries, a company that drastically changed American eating patterns, and hence, American life. It could be argued that what Henry Ford did for the car and transportation, Billy Ingram did for the hamburger and eating.

A scholar's lively account of how White Castle, now a largely overlooked but still profitable also-ran in the domestic restaurant trade, made the once-scorned hamburger a US institution and launched the fast-food industry. Drawing on a variety of sources, historian Hogan (Heidelberg Coll.) first reviews the ethnic and regional character of America's food preferences prior to the 1920s. He goes on to document the accomplishments of the two men who founded White Castle late in 1921 in Wichita, Kans.: Walt Anderson, inventor of the hamburger, and Billy Ingram, whose marketing genius helped make Anderson's creation a staple of American diets. On the strength of standardization, quality control, a commitment to cleanliness, and conservative financial practices, they soon had a lucrative national network of faux-citadel outlets vending tiny ground-meat patties served with an abundance of pungent onions on diminutive buns for a nickel apiece; enjoining customers to ``buy em by the sack,'' the partners also pioneered the take-out business. Although it survived the Great Depression in fine style, White Castle was hard hit by WW II's home-front price controls, shortages, and restrictions. Hamburger History

Before there was the fast food hamburger shops of today, there was White Castle. And before White Castle, the lowely hamburger was not a respected food. Selling 'Em By the Sack describes the history of the hamburger in American culture and why White Castle started in Wichita, KS. Not only a history lesson about White Castle but a social history of American eating habits in the 20th century. So forget about those other hamburger joints and read where it all got started.

SELLING `EM BY THE SACK can be perceived and read for any one or more of several reasons. As an informal textbook on business management, or maybe marketing. As a social commentary on the rise of fast food, or possibly what defines America to the rest of the world. Or, as just a history of the hamburger from a culinary standpoint.
The author, David Hogan, effectively makes the case that White Castle and its founders, Billy Ingram and Walt Anderson (especially the former), were the originators of the fast food "carryout" concept, and that they established the humble hamburger as the distinctive ethnic cuisine of the USA. The evolutionary history of White Castle from the early part of the 20th century to the present is described, from its founding in Wichita in 1921, through the Depression and two wars (W.W.II and Korea), to the era of the big chains (like McDonald's and Burger King), which, miraculously, have not brought about its demise. Along the way, Billy Ingram and his successors have successfully coped with an endless series of challenges, the first of which was to make the hamburger perceived as a sanitary and healthy food at all. Then came standardization of the product, national expansion, gaining credibility with and acceptance from the middle class, coping with war rationing, the hiring of women, surviving the rise of the superchains, adapting to suburbanization of the cities, defending against rising urban crime, facing increasing government regulations, and answering the health-conscious critics' attacks on the fast food lifestyle.
Today, White Castle survives as a barely medium-sized chain in the north-central and northeast regions of the United States. It has kept alive the guiding principles of its founders, has acquired a fanatical following, and remains profitable at a time when even larger chains, like Burger Chef and White Tower, have since disappeared from the American landscape.
SELLING `EM BY THE SACK is not a "thriller", offers no high drama, is written with no humor whatsoever, and is actually a little dry. Had it been about a brand of toothpaste or bread, I wouldn't have bothered. But, it's about hamburgers. (Oddly enough, cheeseburgers are never mentioned in any context.) So, I read it, was entertained, and learned a lot.
I've never eaten a White Castle. Where I live, in Southern California, the brand is represented only by its frozen burgers that one can buy in the supermarkets. I've seen them in packages of a dozen. They seem ridiculously small when compared with McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Jack-In-the-Box, Carl's, or In-`n'-Out. I think I'll buy a "sack".

So where can I find a White Castle?

This book is very well researched, informative, and an interesting read. I loved reading how White Castle evolved over the years. A lot of hard work went into this book and it's well worth your time. Read it, and hopefully there will be a White Castle nearby for when you start craving a sackful.

White Cargo is the forgotten story of the thousands of Britons who lived and died in bondage in Britain’s American colonies.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, more than 300,000 white people were shipped to America as slaves. Urchins were swept up from London’s streets to labor in the tobacco fields, where life expectancy was no more than two years. Brothels were raided to provide “breeders” for Virginia. Hopeful migrants were duped into signing as indentured servants, unaware they would become personal property who could be bought, sold, and even gambled away. Transported convicts were paraded for sale like livestock.

Drawing on letters crying for help, diaries, and court and government archives, Don Jordan and Michael Walsh demonstrate that the brutalities usually associated with black slavery alone were perpetrated on whites throughout British rule. The trade ended with American independence, but the British still tried to sell convicts in their former colonies, which prompted one of the most audacious plots in Anglo-American history.

This is a saga of exploration and cruelty spanning 170 years that has been submerged under the overwhelming memory of black slavery. White Cargo brings the brutal, uncomfortable story to the surface.

High school American history classes present indentured servitude as a benignly paternalistic system whereby colonial immigrants spent a few years working off their passage and went on to better things. Not so, this impassioned history argues: the indentured servitude of whites was comparable in most respects to the slavery endured by blacks. Voluntary indentures arriving in colonial America from Britain were sold on the block, subjected to backbreaking work on plantations, poorly fed and clothed, savagely punished for any disobedience, forbidden to marry without their master's permission, and whipped and branded for running away. Nor were indentures always voluntary: tens of thousands of convicts, beggars, homeless children and other undesirable Britons were transported to America against their will. Given the hideous mortality rates, the authors argue, indentured contracts often amounted to a life sentence at hard labor—some convicts asked to be hanged rather than be sent to Virginia. The authors, both television documentarians, don't attempt a systematic survey of the subject, and their episodic narrative often loses its way in colorful but extraneous digressions. My West Indian Heritage

This is a Great Book!
As a Boy from the Caribbean my Grandparents taught me about African slavery and Irish slavery and my ancestry. Being like many Afro-Caribbean people (especially people from Montserrat, the Virgin Islands, Trinidad, and Barbados) I have African ancestry as well as Irish and Scottish Ancestry just as Colin Powell, singer Rhianna and many others.
When I moved to the States I always wondered why they didn't Also teach Irish Slavery in school. I understand that African-Americans endured slavery for longer in addition the being treated as second class citizens but never understood why both are not taught. I assume since America was founded by the British the history books were "edited" not to mention this time in history or "edited" to use lighter language like "indentured servants" instead of slaves.
This is a must read for all history buffs.

White Cargo is an eye-opener!

The book came in the condition advertised and more quickly than expected. I am doing a presentation with another person in our genealogy group about indentured servants in America, and this is a book we will be drawing on for material. I had no idea the practice was so widespread here in the 17th century. I researched my own immigrant ancestors and found several had come here bound. But I believe they were better treated than many in this book, and they apparently wanted to emigrate. (Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.). It also brought to mind that this practice is still going on and it is UGLY! Human trafficking today is one of the reasons that this book is important. I can't say that I "liked" it...the subject isn't an entertainment...but I am glad to have read it and will pass it on to others.

This book is so good. The detail amazing but graphic

This book is so good. The detail amazing but graphic. I know this is what our ancestors went through. Knowing most of them were from ages 10 to 19 is heart breaking is so hard for me to read at times. Endured slaves is what they were called. Most not making the crowded ride over in the bow of a ship. If they were fortunate to survive they did not last for long. One girl kept running away from one house hold until they gave her 500 slashes with a whip. Afterwards, she crawled off and died. Knowing there was nothing left of her body after that many lashings. Anyone with an Irish bloodline needs to read this. It has opened my eyes to so much, and I just wonder where they buried these poor souls at?

When a domestic servant named Violet Johnson moved to the affluent white suburb of Summit, New Jersey in 1897, she became one of just barely a hundred black residents in the town of six thousand. In this avowedly liberal Protestant community, the very definition of “the suburbs” depended on observance of unmarked and fluctuating race and class barriers. But Johnson did not intend to accept the status quo. Establishing a Baptist church a year later, a seemingly moderate act that would have implications far beyond weekly worship, Johnson challenged assumptions of gender and race, advocating for a politics of civic righteousness that would grant African Americans an equal place in a Christian nation. Johnson’s story is powerful, but she was just one among the many working-class activists integral to the budding days of the civil rights movement. In Black Women’s Christian Activism, Betty Livingston Adams examines the oft overlooked role of non-elite black women in the growth of northern suburbs and American Protestantism in the first half of the twentieth century. Focusing on the strategies and organizational models church women employed in the fight for social justice, Adams tracks the intersections of politics and religion, race and gender, and place and space in a New York City suburb, a local example that offers new insights on northern racial oppression and civil rights protest. As this book makes clear, religion made a key difference in the lives and activism of ordinary black women who lived, worked, and worshiped on the margin during this tumultuous time.

Betty Livingston Adams is Research Fellow and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of History. She was previously Associate Fellow at the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis, Global Scholar at the Institute for Research on Women, and Associate Fellow of the Yale Initiative for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion.

Amazing and insightful read concerning the determination, faith and impact of incredible women of color. Could not put this book down until every page was read. History, religion, migration and employment explored from a specific cultural, social and economic perspective. Most informative and enjoyable read.
