T.D. Jakes: America's New Preacher, by Shayne Lee

T.D. Jakes has emerged as one of the most prolific spiritual leaders of our time. He is pastor of one of the largest churches in the country, CEO of a multimillion dollar empire, the host of a television program, author of a dozen bestsellers, and the producer of two Grammy Award-nominated CDs and three critically acclaimed plays. In 2001 Time magazine featured Jakes on the cover and asked: Is Jakes the next Billy Graham

T.D. Jakes draws on extensive research, including interviews with numerous friends and colleagues of Jakes, to examine both Jakes’s rise to prominence and proliferation of a faith industry bent on producing spiritual commodities for mass consumption. Lee frames Jakes and his success as a metaphor for changes in the Black Church and American Protestantism more broadly, looking at the ramifications of his rise—and the rise of similar preachers—for the way in which religion is practiced in this country, how social issues are confronted or ignored, and what is distinctly “American” about Jakes's emergence. While offering elements of biography, the work also seeks to shed light on important aspects of the contemporary American and African American religious experience.

Lee contends that Jakes’s widespread success symbolizes a religious realignment in which mainline churches nationwide are in decline, while innovative churches are experiencing phenomenal growth. He emphasizes the “American-ness” of Jakes’s story and reveals how preachers like Jakes are drawing followers by delivering therapeutic and transformative messages and providing spiritual commodities that are more in tune with postmodern sensibilities.

As the first work to critically examine Bishop Jakes’s life and message, T.D. Jakes is an important contribution to contemporary American religion as well as popular culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Arguing that West Virginia native T.D. Jakes "is the signpost for postdenominational Protestant America" for his "uncanny ability to blend the spiritual with the secular," Tulane University sociologist Lee offers an intriguing exploration of Jakes's popularity. His entrepreneurial spirit and multimedia approach have endeared him to millions, while his lavish lifestyle and focus on Christians' right to material prosperity continue to spark criticism. Lee avoids heavy jargon and effectively pares his study down to the essentials, making this an accessible portrait despite some occasionally awkward prose. His approach is generally well-balanced; he admires Jakes's journey up from poverty, his hard work and innovation, but believes his "strong embrace of capitalism, penchant for self-invention and reinvention, rugged individualism, and... insatiable appetite for success" reflect the darker side of the nation that made him a Christian celebrity. From Booklist
Jakes has risen from poverty in the mining towns of West Virginia to a multimillion--dollar faith industry based in Dallas, benefiting from the controversial trend toward prosperity religion. Lee, a professor of African studies, examines the rags-to-riches life of Jakes in the broader context of changes in how Americans view religion. Lee calls Jakes a postmodern preacher who seeks to combine godly wisdom with psychological insight on the human condition, capitalizing on an uncanny ability to touch on the modern-day ills at the heart of most Americans' spiritual struggles. Lee also explores the changes in Pentecostalism from an ascetic faith to one that preaches prosperity for the pastor and the congregants, a change that has provoked criticism from some quarters. Lee sees the rise of Jakes to a status comparable to that of Billy Graham, forging a following of all races and economic backgrounds, as symbolic of a trend toward the commodification of religion as more churches struggle to hold onto their flock in the face of secular appeals to wealth and therapeutic alternatives. Review

“Lee probes far beyond the rags-to-riches tale, though Bishop Jakes’ riches remain. He devotes much of the book to what he sees as Bishop Jakes' dual nature: businessman and preacher.”
-Dallas Morning News

“A clearly written, thoughtful interrogation of the financially successful, though morally suspect, merger of business and religion achieved by this African American preacher-millionaire.”
-Choice, Recommended

“Most of the public knows about the Bishop T. D. Jakes who graced the cover of Time magazine, preached “Woman, Thou Art Loosed!” and filled stadiums across the country with throngs of weeping fans. But how many know about the Jakes who boasted that he didn't have enough garage space for his luxury cars, said Jesus was rich, and once tried to evict the owners of a home he had just purchased though they only had a week to pay off their debts? That portrait of Jakes comes courtesy of T. D. Jakes: America's New Preacher. Shayne Lee, a sociologist and professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, asks hard questions about Jakes' ministry.”
-Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Lee offers an intriguing exploration of Jakes's popularity. His entrepreneurial spirit and multimedia approach have endeared him to millions, while his lavish lifestyle and focus on Christians' right to material prosperity continue to spark criticism. Lee avoids heavy jargon and effectively pares his study down to the essentials, making this an accessible portrait.”
-Publishers Weekly

“Shayne Lee, an assistant professor of Sociology at Tulane University, has provided us with the first critical examination of the most influential African American preacher of our time. A socio-cultural biography of sorts, the author examines T.D. Jakes rise to prominence from the hills of West Virginia to multimillion-dollar religious corporate enterprise. But this book does more than follow the development of T.D. Jakes and his ministry. As the author puts it, Jakes becomes ‘a prism through which the reader may learn more about contemporary American religion.’ Lee contends that Jakes is an embodiment of traditional American cultural ideals and the postmodern features that inform what it means to be American in this contemporary moment.”

It's about time!
By Keepin it real!
Almost a decade ago a classic book called The Black Church in the African American Experience warned us about a fast growing Neo-Pentecostal movement threatening the traditional black church. It's about time someone picked up their mantle and let us know what Neo-Pentecostalism is all about!

This book is the best work on the black church since Lincoln and Mamiya's classic study back in 1990. Lee picks up right where they left off and provides us with probably the most lucid explanation of how what he calls a "Neo-Pentecostal revolution" is a dominant force in contemporary American religion by using Jakes as its powerful general. The author argues that Jakes is part of a "faith industry" that turns spiritual gifts into "valuable commodities" (in other words, cash cows). Lee uses Jakes to diagnose and forecast the changing American religious landscape in it's hypercapitalist, postmodern form. This book is a must read (and easy read too) for religion scholars and average people (like me) who have been wondering for years why Jakes is so popular. I have a new respect for Jakes and yet Lee raises new concerns as well.

Good

This is a fair book that deal with a complex subject and man. There will be some that think that any analysis of Bishop Jakes written by a secular writer will be slanted, but the author does a great job of presenting a balance picture. Dr. Lee is not a Jakes partisan , but he is not a hater. He explores how Bishop Jakes enter the national spotlight and what he has done to stay there. One thing that was missing from the book was a meaningful discussion on how people like Bishop Jakes and other "Super Pastors" are impacting religion and faith in this country and overseas. But this book is a good start

From a student of the writer...
By Cleo Coco
I am enjoying your book extremely and I love that it is on a subject that I

would otherwise probably never look to learn about or that even really I would

think, interest me. I never knew the breadth and extent of the vast

televangelist market, and the work of ministers such as Jakes, not only as men

of God but as businessmen. Although I personally am not religious, this

"updating" of the religious industry is completely fascinating. I especially

enjoyed(just as the cynic I am), all of the hypocrisies and oxymorons offered

by men such as Jakes. He is not very different, in fact, from someone like

Paris Hilton, who has made her success by marketing everything she can, and

successfully I might add! Its interesting especially because you want to both

love him and hate him all at the same time. ALthough many of his methods and

lavish lifestyle are controversial, it is important to acknowledge not only his

brilliance as a marketing machine and businessman, but in the end he does offer

a certain hope and message which (though I may not agree with it per se) does

in fact speak to hundreds of thousands.

Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers: An Intimate Journey among Hasidic Girls, by Stephanie Wellen Levine

From the ardently religious young woman who longs for the life of a male scholar to the young rebel who visits a strip club, smokes pot, and agonizes over her loss of faith to the proud Lubavitcher with a desire for a high-powered career, Stephanie Wellen Levine provides a rare glimpse into the inner worlds and daily lives of these Hasidic girls.

Lubavitcher Hasidim are famous for their efforts to inspire secular Jews to become more observant and for their messianic fervor. Strict followers of Orthodox Judaism, they maintain sharp gender-role distinctions.

Levine spent a year living in the Lubavitch community of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, participating in the rhythms of Hasidic girlhood. Drawing on many intimate hours among Hasidim and over 30 in-depth interviews, Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers offers rich portraits of individual Hasidic young women and how they deal with the conflicts between the regimented society in which they live and the pull of mainstream American life.

This superbly crafted book offers intimate stories from Hasidic teenagers' lives, providing an intriguing twist to a universal theme: the struggle to grow up and define who we are within the context of culture, family, and life-driving beliefs.

From Publishers Weekly
This absorbing ethnography acts as one subculture's corrective to Reviving Ophelia, in that it offers a refreshing portrait of adolescent girls who are far from insecure. In this refreshing portrayal of girls who are far from insecure, Levine presents a contrasting path to that of mainstream adolescent girls. While a graduate student in American studies at Harvard, Levine spent a year living as a "participant observer" in the Lubavitcher community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, entering with the following assumption: "The possibility that these girls' lives could be anything other than the Platonic essence of feminine subjugation seemed as unlikely as a suckling pig on a Shabbos table." What she found instead is that Lubavitch culture nurtures most girls' inner and outer voices. Though they are not immune from adolescent concerns about fashion, weight, looks and cliques, the Lubavitch emphasis on each person's godly mission to bring the Messiah deepens their spiritual outlook; the single-sex environment in which they mature helps develop vibrant, expressive personalities. Those who clash with Orthodox strictures, however, experience intense and painful struggles. From interviews with 32 girls ages 13 to 23, Levine found "downright juicy" material and culled seven portraits of girls (disguised in name and background) in their "idiosyncratic splendor." The essays are sometimes repetitive within the context of the entire book, as if Levine wrote each to stand on its own, but her bright, lively narrative compensates. Levine invites readers to share the "pure delight" of knowing these girls, and challenges us to draw on Hasidism as an unexpected source in helping our own girls develop into secure, confident adults.

"In an age that is at times overly concerned with girls' self-destruction, here is a welcome sign of girls' strength and healthy development. love, love, love it
By R. Dragon
This was such a wonderful eye-opening book about the variety of girls in the Lubavitch community in Crown Heights. This book breaks the stereotype that says that girls from very religious families become "drone-like" or don't have their individuality. Within their very prescribed world, because of the teachings and influence of the rebbe, there are countless opportunities for personal exploration and expression. It was inspiring to me as a mother of a girl as well; I want my daughter to have some of the passion and commitment displayed in these pages!

Lots of words, little depth
By K. McCaslin
After reading the many positive reviews about this book I was very excited to start reading it, however I was very disappointed by the lack of the depth in the portrayls of the young women. The author spent over a year with these young women and yet tells us very little about who these women really are. She presents a surface level look at the young women of Crown Heights that could have been summarized in a 50 page thesis, instead of drawn out into this 230 page book that hardly clues the outsider into the world of a young Lubivitch woman. The author also fails to accurately explain some critical Orthodox rituals/beliefs, which I found extremely disappointing. If you are interested in Hasidic Jews, I would recommend The Rebbe's Army : Inside the World of Chabad-Lubavitch
by Sue Fishkoff, Real Jews: Secular Versus Ultra-Orthodox: The Struggle for Jewish Identity in Israel
by Noah J. Efron, or even the fiction written by Naomi Regan.

More Beautiful and More Terrible: The Embrace and Transcendence of Racial Inequality in the United States, by Imani Perry

For a nation that often optimistically claims to be post-racial, we are still mired in the practices of racial inequality that plays out in law, policy, and in our local communities. One of two explanations is often given for this persistent phenomenon: On the one hand, we might be hypocritical—saying one thing, and doing or believing another; on the other, it might have little to do with us individually but rather be inherent to the structure of American society.

More Beautiful and More Terrible compels us to think beyond this insufficient dichotomy in order to see how racial inequality is perpetuated. Imani Perry asserts that the U.S. is in a new and distinct phase of racism that is “post-intentional”: neither based on the intentional discrimination of the past, nor drawing upon biological concepts of race. Drawing upon the insights and tools of critical race theory, social policy, law, sociology and cultural studies, she demonstrates how post-intentional racism works and maintains that it cannot be addressed solely through the kinds of structural solutions of the Left or the values arguments of the Right. Rather, the author identifies a place in the middle—a space of “righteous hope”—and articulates a notion of ethics and human agency that will allow us to expand and amplify that hope.

To paraphrase James Baldwin, when talking about race, it is both more terrible than most think, but also more beautiful than most can imagine, with limitless and open-ended possibility. Perry leads readers down the path of imagining the possible and points to the way forward.

More Awesome
By STEVEN WHITMAN
In these days when 4 seconds is about all the time one gets to establish a position, this remarkable book by Princeton Professor Imani Perry asks us, no requires us, to think long and hard about the driving force in building and reproducing US society -- racism. Dr. Perry does not provide any easy answers for what must be done but provides many crucial questions about what we must think about in order to rid the US of this plague. In the end Perry suggests several strategies for proceeding towards a civilized society free of discrimination. All serious anti-racists should read this book and discuss it wherever possible. As Lorraine Hansberry wrote: "The matter of admitting the true nature of a problem before setting about rectifying it, or even pretending to, is of the utmost importance."

A Must Read
By David Ansell
This remarkable book by Princeton Professor Imani Perry speaks to the enormous impact that racism has on American society both overt and covert. Weaving literature, epidemiology, critical race theory, law and history into a compelling and accessable narrative Perry urges us to embrace the truth about the enduring legacy of racism in America. No, we have not achieved a post racial society... not even close. Dr. Perry presents a compelling case for the persistence of the "color line" in American society to disasterous effect.

Perry's writing is both engaging and lyrical, poetic, pointed and pertinent. She makes the case that most Americans fail to appreciate the contraints that racial inequality (often maintained by force) places on individuals, families and whole communities to the detriment of all of us. Her examples are illuminating and instructive (for example the leadership "glass ceiling" Asian Americans face or the role of police brutality on African-American community life.)

Perry's solutions are more elusive than her powerful explication of race in American society. But "More Beautiful and More Terrible" does us all a service by stating the case for the lasting and deadly consequences of racial inequality and urging rectification at the individual and community levels. This should become a must read for all those interested in the "why" of American life.

Breathtakingly Beautiful and Insightful
By mich
Perry's style is beautiful, insightful and deeply honest. Aptly title, "More Beautiful. . ." follows in Baldwin's footsteps by depicting ugly patterns with poetic, illuminating and incisive analyses. This book is a must read for everyone who endeavors to leave the twenty-first century a better place for the next generation. If you follow Perry's scholarship, read her op-eds, read "More Beautiful..." and her many other publications, you will soon realize that she is one of this century's premier intellectuals.

White by Law: The Legal Construction of Race (Critical America), by Ian Haney López

Lily white. White knights. The white dove of peace. White lie, white list, white magic. Our language and our culture are suffused, often subconsciously, with positive images of whiteness. Whiteness is so inextricably linked with the status quo that few whites, when asked, even identify themselves as such. And yet when asked what they would have to be paid to live as a black person, whites give figures running into the millions of dollars per year, suggesting just how valuable whiteness is in American society.

Exploring the social, and specifically legal origins, of white racial identity, Ian F. Haney Lopez here examines cases in America's past that have been instrumental in forming contemporary conceptions of race, law, and whiteness. In 1790, Congress limited naturalization to white persons. This racial prerequisite for citizenship remained in force for over a century and a half, enduring until 1952. In a series of important cases, including two heard by the United States Supreme Court, judges around the country decided and defined who was white enough to become American.

White by Law traces the reasoning employed by the courts in their efforts to justify the whiteness of some and the non- whiteness of others. Did light skin make a Japanese person white? Were Syrians white because they hailed geographically from the birthplace of Christ? Haney Lopez reveals the criteria that were used, often arbitrarily, to determine whiteness, and thus citizenship: skin color, facial features, national origin, language, culture, ancestry, scientific opinion, and, most importantly, popular opinion.

Having defined the social and legal origins of whiteness, White by Law turns its attention to white identity today and concludes by calling upon whites to acknowledge and renounce their privileged racial identity.

From Publishers Weekly
In this study, narrowly academic yet intriguing, Lopez, who teaches law at the University of Wisconsin, examines early-20th-century cases in which courts sought to determine who qualified as white for the purposes of citizenship and naturalization. His conclusion: whiteness is "a complex, falsely homogenizing term." For example, he shows how courts issued contradictory decisions regarding the whiteness of groups such as Syrians, Armenians and Asian Indians; some followed scientific evidence, while most ultimately relied on "common knowledge," thus finding many reasons?including culture and political sophistication?to reject foreigners who might be Caucasian. This leads the author to argue, a bit thinly, that whites must pursue a "self-deconstructive" race consciousness to pursue racial justice. Thus, whites must recognize the racial aspects of their privileged identity and daily engage in "choosing against Whiteness"; one example would be to resist racist slurs, even to the point of claiming a nonwhite racial identity when hearing them.

From Library Journal
Words carry social connotations. Some, like "lily white," have positive connotations. With this sense of "whiteness" as his thesis, Lopez (law, Univ. of Wisconsin) writes of the law's recognition of a white racial identity. He focuses on a series of cases, from 1878 to 1944, known as the "racial prerequisite cases." In those cases, state and federal courts sought to define characteristics of "whiteness" necessary to qualify an immigrant for naturalization as a U.S. citizen. Lopez concludes that the basis of today's racial inequality is to be found in the privileged status accorded to white Americans because of this legally sanctioned white racial identity. Sure to be controversial, this book will find a deserved place in academic libraries. The general reader might be advised to turn to Andrew Hacker's Two Nations (LJ 3/15/92), John Hope Franklin's The Color Line (LJ 3/1/93), and Cornel West's Race Matters (LJ 3/15/93).?Jerry E. Review

"White by Law's thoughtful analysis of the prerequisite cases offers support for the fundamental critical race theory tenet that race is a social construct reinforced by law. Haney Lopez has blazed a trail for those exploring the legal and social constructions of race in the United States."

-Berkeley Women's Law Journal

”Henry Lopez has provided a piece of scholarship worthy of brining out for a curtain call on its 10th anniversary.”

Best analysis of the essence of "white skin privilege"
By A Customer
Mr. Lopez does a great service for those white people who have a genuine interest in examining the sources of their color based privileges. Lopez 's depth analysis of the tacit forms of knowledge that sustain the social relationships between the oppressor and the oppressed; the dominant and subordinate cultures, gives the reader enough insight and direction to begin their own self examination. It's a must read for those who want to develop an alternative to a world permeated with racism

Clarity and Ingenous
By A Customer
White By Law: is the best account, that I have encountered, that explains the formulation of racial ideologies into law. It is well-written, flows easily, goes by quickly, and ellucidates the way which American legal institutions have constructed race. This should be a "must-read" for all persons in this country.

Arranging Grief: Sacred Time and the Body in Nineteenth-Century America (Sexual Cultures), by Dana Luciano

2008 Winner, MLA First Book Prize

Charting the proliferation of forms of mourning and memorial across a century increasingly concerned with their historical and temporal significance, Arranging Grief offers an innovative new view of the aesthetic, social, and political implications of emotion. Dana Luciano argues that the cultural plotting of grief provides a distinctive insight into the nineteenth-century American temporal imaginary, since grief both underwrote the social arrangements that supported the nation’s standard chronologies and sponsored other ways of advancing history.

Nineteenth-century appeals to grief, as Luciano demonstrates, diffused modes of “sacred time” across both religious and ostensibly secular frameworks, at once authorizing and unsettling established schemes of connection to the past and the future. Examining mourning manuals, sermons, memorial tracts, poetry, and fiction by Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Apess, James Fenimore Cooper, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Susan Warner, Harriet E. Wilson, Herman Melville, Frances E. W. Harper, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Elizabeth Keckley, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Luciano illustrates the ways that grief coupled the affective body to time. Drawing on formalist, Foucauldian, and psychoanalytic criticism, Arranging Grief shows how literary engagements with grief put forth ways of challenging deep-seated cultural assumptions about history, progress, bodies, and behaviors.

Review

“[Luciano] offers astute readings of ‘chronobiopolitics’ . . . and argues persuasively for the importance of temporality in an expanded study of the history of sexuality.”
-American Literature

“An astounding, original, aesthetically profound rethinking of the productive temporalities of loss. A must-read book for any scholar of aesthetics, American literature, sexuality—or any wanderer in the field of mourning.”
-Lauren Berlant,University of Chicago

“This is a challenging, far-reaching, and original contribution to the analysis of American culture. . . . Recommended.”
-Choice

“A tour de force of literary-historical scholarship, blending close reading and a broad grasp of nineteenth-century American culture to produce a truly illuminating account of what Luciano calls that culture's attachment to attachment. Tracking the manifold uses to which grief was put in the period, from the most public to the most interior, Luciano makes it possible for the reader to understand the way that grief shapes bodies by shaping time. Arranging Grief will be indispensable reading for scholars of emotion, sexuality, temporality, and the history of national imaginaries.”br>-Christopher Nealon, author of Foundlings: Lesbian and Gay Historical Emotion before Stonewall

A brilliant work of cultural history and critical theory
By Gentle Reader
This is a beautifully written, masterfully argued, deeply sophisticated book. It tracks how nineteenth century culture marshaled rituals of and ideas about grief both to serve and to contest an increasingly linear, racialized, heterosexualized, and Christianized national-political time. Luciano argues that even as the culture of mourning aimed to channel the newly permitted emotional "excess" of lament for lost loved ones into a liberal ideology of a shared humanity moving forward in time, the wayward grief and bereavement rituals of women, Native Americans, and people of African ancestry signaled other ways of conceiving of and living in both time and history. It's a story about the Anglo-American nineteenth century, about modernity writ large, and about possibilities for thinking politically in our own time.

It might be hard going for non-academics, as each sentence is a gold mine of ideas--I'm a college professor and have spent about two hours per chapter reading and taking notes-- but it is worth every minute spent on it. I won't belabor its sophisticated work with Marxist, deconstructionist, psychoanalytic, feminist, and queer theory, but it's all there and amazingly coordinated within a convincing, elegant, deeply original argument. Amazingly, it's a FIRST book, but it's as good as most people get over the course of a long career. If you are a nineteenth-century historian or literary critic, an anthropologist of death ritual, a psychoanalytic theorist, or an educated reader who loves a gorgeous challenge, buy this book.

The Children of Immigrants at School: A Comparative Look at Integration in the United States and Western Europe (Social Science Research Co

The Children of Immigrants at School explores the 21st-century consequences of immigration through an examination of how the so-called second generation is faring educationally in six countries: France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United States. In this insightful volume, Richard Alba and Jennifer Holdaway bring together a team of renowned social science researchers from around the globe to compare the educational achievements of children from low-status immigrant groups to those of mainstream populations in these countries, asking what we can learn from one system that can be usefully applied in another.   Working from the results of a five-year, multi-national study, the contributors to The Children of Immigrants at School ultimately conclude that educational processes do, in fact, play a part in creating unequal status for immigrant groups in these societies. In most countries, the youth coming from the most numerous immigrant populations lag substantially behind their mainstream peers, implying that they will not be able to integrate economically and civically as traditional mainstream populations shrink. Despite this fact, the comparisons highlight features of each system that hinder the educational advance of immigrant-origin children, allowing the contributors to identify a number of policy solutions to help fix the problem. A comprehensive look at a growing global issue, The Children of Immigrants at School represents a major achievement in the fields of education and immigration studies.

Review
“[T]his exciting new volume presents compelling new ideas for researchers of immigrant youth to consider in developing measures of inequality, strategies for responding to inequality, and testing strategies for their effectiveness.  Its lessons, and those of future research it will seed, can be implemented by considering the use of research in policy and practice.  The book puts forth an exciting charge…”-Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies

"This tightly focused volume, based on a highly innovative comparison of the United States and Europe, provides an indispensable guide to understanding the problems of and prospects for the children of immigrants in different educational contexts. Full of valuable and stimulating insights, this is an important contribution to the comparative analysis of immigration."-Nancy Foner, author of In a New Land: A Comparative View of Immigration

"Virtually all developed nations have become countries of immigration, and schools have become the crucible for assimilation in each society. The remarkable collection of studies assembled by Richard Alba and Jennifer Holdaway reveal how the children of immigrants are faring in schools of the United States, France, the Netherlands, Britain, Sweden, and Spain. Their comparative lens reveals the barriers to successful incorporation shared in all settings—segregation, tracking, unequal school funding, concentrated disadvantage and advantaged parents reacting to preserve the status quo. But the institutional variety they uncover also reveals many promising pathways forward. The book is of value not only to scholars of immigration, but to anyone concerned with educating the disadvantaged."-Douglas Massey, author of Brokered Boundaries: Creating Immigrant Identity in Anti-Immigrant Times

Review

"James McCaffrey is to be commended. Army of Manifest Destiny illuminates the Mexican War as an episode in the on-going history of the American soldier, as a prelude to the Civil War military experience, and as a major event in the history of American expansion. A well-researched book which will be of use to anybody interested in the social history of the American soldier. Its easy style will make it attractive to the general reader as well."

-Tennessee Historical Quarterly

"Deals with every facet of the soldier's involvement, as opposed to the experiences of a single unit or individual. . . . it must rank as the best source on the subject. The literary style is suitable for virtually every level of reader and is remarkably easy to follow."

-Choice

"From the letters of soldiers on the battlefield to analyses of military policy and procedures, this is an essential volume for anyone studying the Mexican War in depth."

-Midwest Book Review

"With effortless command of fact and an almost universal conversational writing style, McCaffrey (and his soldiers) bring us an on-the-spot understanding of Mexican War enlistment procedures, weaponry, punishments, disease and medical care, recreation, disdain for Mexican civilians, rivalry of volunteers with regular army men, food, shelter, and clothing. . . . This book fills a long-standing need. It may well become the Billy Yank of the Mexican War."

-The Filson Club Historical Quarterly

"McCaffrey is at his best conveying the personal dimension of the war experience. The real strength of the book lies in the effective arrangement of bit and pieces of letters and diaries, which reveal emotions and attitudes that are variously humorous, shocking, and poignant. . . . The story is compelling. . . . A well-researched and entertaining study that will hold the attention of students and general readers."

-The Journal of Southern History

When he is not mentioned I am disappointed. However
By Jane McMeans
I am researching a particular doctor who served during the Mexican War. When he is not mentioned I am disappointed. However, the book does describe the circumstances very well and should help with an understanding of daily life during wartime.

Put yourself inside the heads of folks who fought this war.
By A Customer
I was doing genological research and wanted to understand better what the folks who were involved in the Mexican War were thinking, why they fought, where they came from, etc. This book did that and more. It is incredible to read the very words of these soldiers--it makes you realize that there is very little difference between our us and our ancestors. No one can explain it better than their own words.

McCaffrey on the American Soldier in the Mexican War
By Hershel Parker
McCaffrey gives a vivid sense of the men through hundreds (surely hundreds) of quotations from letters. He is NOT giving a history of the Mexican War. For example, I wanted to see something about Santa Cruz de Rosales and did not find any mention of this battle fought after the peace treaty was agreed to. Go to it for the right reason and you will not be disappointed.

Sacred Subdivisions: The Postsuburban Transformation of American Evangelicalism, by Justin Wilford

In an era where church attendance has reached an all-time low, recent polling has shown that Americans are becoming less formally religious and more promiscuous in their religious commitments. Within both mainline and evangelical Christianity in America, it is common to hear of secularizing pressures and increasing competition from nonreligious sources. Yet there is a kind of religious institution that has enjoyed great popularity over the past thirty years: the evangelical megachurch. Evangelical megachurches not only continue to grow in number, but also in cultural, political, and economic influence. To appreciate their appeal is to understand not only how they are innovating, but more crucially, where their innovation is taking place.  In this groundbreaking and interdisciplinary study, Justin G. Wilford argues that the success of the megachurch is hinged upon its use of space: its location on the postsuburban fringe of large cities, its fragmented, dispersed structure, and its focus on individualized spaces of intimacy such as small group meetings in homes, which help to interpret suburban life as religiously meaningful and create a sense of belonging. Based on original fieldwork at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, one of the largest and most influential megachurches in America, Sacred Subdivisions explains how evangelical megachurches thrive by transforming mundane secular spaces into arenas of religious significance.

Review

“Wilford’s holistic reading of the evangelical landscape provides a new understanding of how megachurches have swept across suburban America.”

-Deborah Justice,Marginalia

“Wilford writes clearly and makes complex issues quite accessible. Anthropologists of Christianity and contemporary American cities, especially, stand to benefit from the book’s major insights about the deep entanglements of evangelical religion, late modernity, and the cultural geography of postsuburbia.”

-James S. Bielo,Anthropological Quarterly

“Sacred Subdivisions is the first full-length treatment of the American megachurch phenomenon by a geographer, providing a compelling analysis of how the fragmented ‘post-suburban’ context shapes and challenges these large congregations. Author Justin G Wilford notes that of the largest 50 non-denominational (a characteristic that he sees as essential to these congregations) megachurches, all but six are situated on the residential fringe of metropolitan areas – a percentage that only increased in the last decade…. [Sacred Subdivisions] richly documents, the high degree of adaptability of megachurches (and the fact that there are highly successful ones located in major cities) suggests that they may be able to survive and thrive in landscapes far different than the ones in which they were planted.”-Richard Cimino,Urban Studies

"This is a brilliant analysis of why postsuburban megachurches, such as Rick Warren’s Saddleback Community Church, are growing. Justin Wilford utilizes his training as a geographer to understand the fit between suburban sprawl and postdenominational churches. These liturgically lithe, symbolically flexible, and spatially supple churches are attractive to people living fragmented lives because they mirror the choices available to residents of secular suburbia, while at the same time supplying community, therapeutic insight, and biblically-informed language of how to live a purposeful life."-Donald E. Miller, Center for Religion and Civic Culture, University of Southern California

"[T]his is a very readable addition to the literature on megachurches and expands our understanding of their influences in American religious life."-Stephen Ellingson,Nova Religio

"Sacred Subdivisions offers a much needed assessment of the attractiveness of megachurches within the postsuburban milieu. Wilford skillfully explains how places like Saddleback remain so attractive to those living in an era of socio-spatial fragmentation."-Mark T. Mulder, Religious Research Association Review

"The author, using the literature and theoretical work in cultural geography, makes a strong case that Postdenominational Evangelical (PE) Megachurches must be analyzed not simply as more effective marketers of religious goods, but as innovators in a fragmented and post-suburban social and spatial environment that dictates a new form of meaning-making relative to religion. As a reviewer (who is not a geographer), I found the text fascinating study. Wilford’s grasp of the literature in sociology of religion and in his own discipline is impressive. His willingness to push against old and new paradigms and prejudices was bracing."-James K. Wellman Jr.,University of Washington

"[Sacred Subdivisions] richly documents, the high degree of adaptability of megachurches (and the fact that there are highly successful ones located in major cities) suggests that they may be able to survive and thrive in landscapes far different than the ones in which they were planted."-Urban Studies Journal

"Wilford does a great service by highlighting the role of the material and spatial configuration of large evangelical congregations and has simultaneously brought secularization debates into geography and important spatial theory into the sociology of religion."-Peter Schuurman,Oxford University Press
