Girl Zines: Making Media, Doing Feminism, by Alison Piepmeier

With names like The East Village Inky, Mend My Dress, Dear Stepdad, and I’m So Fucking Beautiful, zines created by girls and women over the past two decades make feminism’s third wave visible. These messy, photocopied do-it-yourself documents cover every imaginable subject matter and are loaded with handwriting, collage art, stickers, and glitter. Though they all reflect the personal style of the creators, they are also sites for constructing narratives, identities, and communities.

Girl Zines is the first book-length exploration of this exciting movement. Alison Piepmeier argues that these quirky, personalized booklets are tangible examples of the ways that girls and women ‘do’ feminism today. The idiosyncratic, surprising, and savvy arguments and issues showcased in the forty-six images reproduced in the book provide a complex window into feminism’s future, where zinesters persistently and stubbornly carve out new spaces for what it means to be a revolutionary and a girl. Girl Zines takes zines seriously, asking what they can tell us about the inner lives of girls and women over the last twenty years.

Review

“Before you could Tweet your every thought to the world, young women cut, pasted, Xeroxed, and traded their own handmade magazines through the mail. In fact, the gorgeously glossy mag you’re holding in your hands right now started off as a ’zine. Girl Zines analyzes the beginning of the movement and its ’revolution grrrl style’ roots, as well as the way ’zinesters used the medium to explore race, sexuality, and identity.”
-Bust Magazine

"Feminist identities are the central concern of Piepmeier's Girl Zines, the first full-length academic study of young women's zine production to take third-wave politics as a serious subject of inquiry."-Red Chidgey,Signs

"Piepmeier's work is an insightful and long-overdue engagement with the feminist work in zines, which played a pivotal role not only in Riot Grrrl but also in the development of the Third Wave in general."-Virginia Corvid,Feminist Collections

“It’s thrilling to see zines taken seriously in Piepmeier’s Girl Zines, which explores the world of handmade magazines created by women as a kind of social activism.”
-Bookforum

“Piepmeier’s careful study of the zine movement in girl culture is a powerful and convincing articulation of the ways women’s and girl’s activism has developed, and the creative forms it has taken.”
-Leslie Heywood, editor of The Women’s Movement Today

“Overall, [Piepmeier’s] analysis about the political role that grrrl zines played is dead on. They were central to the evolution of my own feminist development in college in the early 1990s, speaking directly to my feelings of exclusion, disgust with pop culture, and surliness about the lingering sexism that second-wave feminism had failed to abolish.”
-The American Prospect

Beyond the Nation: Diasporic Filipino Literature and Queer Reading (Sexual Cultures), by Martin Joseph Ponce

Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series     Beyond the Nation charts an expansive history of Filipino literature in the U.S., forged within the dual contexts of imperialism and migration, from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first. Martin Joseph Ponce theorizes and enacts a queer diasporic reading practice that attends to the complex crossings of race and nation with gender and sexuality. Tracing the conditions of possibility of Anglophone Filipino literature to U.S. colonialism in the Philippines in the early twentieth century, the book examines how a host of writers from across the century both imagine and address the Philippines and the United States, inventing a variety of artistic lineages and social formations in the process.

Beyond the Nation considers a broad array of issues, from early Philippine nationalism, queer modernism, and transnational radicalism, to music-influenced and cross-cultural poetics, gay male engagements with martial law and popular culture, second-generational dynamics, and the relation between reading and revolution. Ponce elucidates not only the internal differences that mark this literary tradition but also the wealth of expressive practices that exceed the terms of colonial complicity, defiant nationalism, or conciliatory assimilation. Moving beyond the nation as both the primary analytical framework and locus of belonging, Ponce proposes that diasporic Filipino literature has much to teach us about alternative ways of imagining erotic relationships and political communities.

Review
"Beyond the Nation is nuanced, pioneering, and politically vital for Filipino studies...not only a call for rigorous work beyond the national boundaries of the United States but also a wake-up call to interrogate our fatal attachment to US nation-state even as we are critical of it." -Sony Coranez Bolton, GLQ

“A major new contribution to the growing body of interdisciplinary work on the complex convergences of empire, sexuality, and transnational cultural politics. Through elegant analyses of influential and emergent texts spanning two hemispheres and over a century, Ponce’s book is as far-reaching and urgently grounded as the queer diasporic formations it illuminates.” -Victor Bascara, author of Model Minority Imperialism

“Beyond the Nation is one of the most original, scrupulous, and moving books in Asian American literary criticism that has been published in the past fifteen years. Grounded in exhaustive research on a fragmented, challenging archive of Anglophone Filipino writings, this book poses the deceptively simple question, how far does meaning travel? While questions of queer diaspora, globalization, and cosmopolitanism have become taken up―and perhaps mired in―debates about the exclusionary or hegemonic nature of elite queer identities, Ponce’s approach to orientation reminds us of the utopian possibilities of what it means to be queer.” -Sarita Echavez See,University of Michigan

Colonization and Its Discontents: Emancipation, Emigration, and Antislavery in Antebellum Pennsylvania (Early American Places), by Beverly

Pennsylvania contained the largest concentration of early America’s abolitionist leaders and organizations, making it a necessary and illustrative stage from which to understand how national conversations about the place of free blacks in early America originated and evolved, and, importantly, the role that colonization—supporting the emigration of free and emancipated blacks to Africa—played in national and international antislavery movements. Beverly C. Tomek’s meticulous exploration of the archives of the American Colonization Society, Pennsylvania’s abolitionist societies, and colonizationist leaders (both black and white) enables her to boldly and innovatively demonstrate that, in Philadelphia at least, the American Colonization Society often worked closely with other antislavery groups to further the goals of the abolitionist movement.

In Colonization and Its Discontents, Tomek brings a much-needed examination of the complexity of the colonization movement by describing in depth the difference between those who supported colonization for political and social reasons and those who supported it for religious and humanitarian reasons. Finally, she puts the black perspective on emigration into the broader picture instead of treating black nationalism as an isolated phenomenon and examines its role in influencing the black abolitionist agenda.

Review
"Colonization and Its Discontents is a well-researched and welcome reexamination of a movement that defies easy definition." -Journal of American History

"Beverly C. Tomek offers an interesting analysis of antislavery movements in Pennsylvania, starting with the development of the opposition to slavery among Friends then focusing more intensely on the Pennsylvania Colonization Society and its relationships with other antislavery organizations during the early nineteenth century."-Jean R. Soderlund,Historian

"The payoff of such organization is a series of richly detailed vignettes that illustrate the complexity of their thinking. And it is the complex and overlapping nature of these ideologies that Tomek adeptly utilizes to problematize standard narratives of antislavery thought. Tomek's argument that gradualists and colonizationists shared a commitment to gradual emancipation, working within the law, and social control over blacks is a significant contribution that challenges our understanding of what 'antislavery' should mean. Additionally, the recognition of the diversity within the colonization movement and reevaluation of its political, economic, and humanitarian wings are strengths of the book. This is a much-needed addition to the growing body of scholarship dedicated to the nineteenth-century colonization movement." -Robert Murray,The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"Tomek's book constitutes an important contribution to the history of the nineteenth-century antislavery movement."-Friederike Baer,American Historical Review

"In texturing this story, Tomek has made a thoughtful contribution to colonization scholarship."-Joanne Pope Melish,Journal of Social History

"An enlightening examination of the role of colonization in the state and national controversies over slavery, abolition, and civil rights in antebellum America."-Nicholas Wood,Pennsylvania History

"This is a much-needed addition to the growing body of scholarship dedicated to the nineteenth-century colonization movement."-The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"Colonization and Its Discontents is an interesting and useful contribution to the ever-growing historiography of nineteenth-century American antislavery movements."-Erica Armstrong Dunbar,Pennsylvania Magazine of History of Biography

Horatio Lord Nelson (Historic Lives), by Brian Lavery

Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was undoubtedly Britain's greatest naval leader and perhaps the greatest sea commander of all time. Although his complex character often made him enemies and led to mistakes in both his public and private life, he was an unrivaled seaman, an original and brave tactician, and a charismatic leader.

Brian Lavery, a renowned expert in naval history, charts Nelson's career from his first naval posting in peacetime, at the age of just 12, to his rapid rise through the ranks, his command of the Mediterranean Fleet in HMS Victory, the transformation of his reputation during the Nile Campaign and his heroic death at Trafalgar. The book examines the forces and events which shaped Nelson's life—the victories and defeats, and the successes and failures—to discover the reasons for his extraordinary fame, both in his own time and to this day. Lavery sets the events of Nelson's maritime career against the backdrop of his personal life—his marriage and the scandal of his ménage-a-trois with the Hamiltons—to reveal a man of determination, courage, and daring.

The Battle of Trafalgar continues to represent an ideal of complete and uncompromising victory from the age of the sailing ship, and Horatio Nelson, the hero and victim of that battle, has similarly secured his place as a legend in naval history. Illustrated throughout with contemporary maps, paintings, and letters and original battle plans in Nelson's hand, this book in the Historic Lives series provides a concise and valuable insight into the achievements and life of Lord Horatio Nelson.

From Booklist
These two concise biographies, both published by New York University Press in conjunction with the British Library, are the opening volumes in a series of profiles of Britain's historical icons.

Doran teaches early modern history at Oxford. She greatly admires her subject while acknowledging her faults. Elizabeth could be vain, petty, and frighteningly ruthless. Yet, that ruthlessness guaranteed her own and her nation's survival during extremely precarious times. Doran rejects the assertions of some historians who give most of the credit for Elizabeth's successes to her counselors. Rather, she portrays Elizabeth as a brilliant manipulator of both men and events, who was also blessed with the ability to manage public opinion, thus reinforcing her virtually mythological status.

Lavery is curator of naval history at Britain's National Maritime Museum He has written a fast-paced, absorbing chronicle of Britain's most celebrated naval commander, who died while engineering the great victory at Trafalgar. At first glance, Nelson was an unlikely hero. He was short, frail, and given to fits of impulsivity. Yet, as Lavery illustrates, he was a natural leader of men, with both physical and moral courage. Despite an authoritarian streak, Nelson was able to form deep bonds of trust and affection with the common sailors under his command. While he also reveals Nelson's less attractive qualities, Lavery clearly believes Nelson deserves his place in the British pantheon.

These two works are an excellent beginning in what promises to be an informative and enjoyable series aimed at general readers with an interest in British history. Jay Freeman

"I have read several books on Britain's greatest hero, but this is by far the most concise in its clarity and brevity. Illustrated with period documents, maps, paintings and drawings, Lavery's book gets to the point and stays there, offering a very human portrait of a larger than life character who was both flawed and magnificent, and in the end, a man of flesh and blood, not a sainted deity."

-Sea History

"This is a modern work with the modern reader in mind, and it is deserving of attention, as is Nelson's legacy...This is indeed the right book for the right time and is highly recommended."

-H-Net Book Review

"[Lavery] has written a fast-paced, absorbing chronicle of Britain's most celebrated naval commander."

A readable and attractive book
By A Customer
This is a concise, appealling and informative small book about naval history's greatest warrior, Lord Nelson. Because it is designed more as a sketch than as a thorough painting, I recommend you buy other books, both for context on Nelson's Royal Navy and for a deeper understanding of Nelson's unequalled skills as a fighting admiral. Without any doubt the two best books on these are:
Brian Lavery, "Nelson's Navy: The Ships, Men, and Organization, 1793-1815"
Joel Hayward, "For God and Glory: Lord Nelson and His Way of War"
With these three books you won't go wrong. You'll learn plenty about the man who, perhaps more than anyone else, made Britain great for over 150 years.

Wouldn't recommend
By Greg F
I'm more than halfway through this, and would not recommend it. Perhaps Lavery's other titles on Nelson are better-- this one almost seems like an ignorant editor just ripped out sentences & paragraphs from a longer work & put this out as an excerpted work. The writing is clumsy and often unclear throughout; points aren't made that should be; and the overall tone is too hagiographic to represented a balanced study, even as a sketch of Nelson's life.
Nice packaging, though, and some good artwork and battle/harbor scene prints from Pocock & the Naval Archives. But even many of these are too small to make much use of.

Mrs LLoyd's review below is spot-on.
By Mal
This is very much a book for readers UNfamiliar with Nelson's life. They'll learn a lot from this book and will hopefully then feel inspired to read some of the exciting new studies of HN. Even so, many readers ARE novices who needs such a book as this, so for them I say "get this book".

What Is Parenthood?: Contemporary Debates about the Family (Families, Law, and Society)From NYU Press

Extraordinary changes in patterns of family life—and family law—have dramatically altered the boundaries of parenthood and opened up numerous questions and debates. What is parenthood and why does it matter? How should society define, regulate, and support it? Is parenthood separable from marriage—or couplehood—when society seeks to foster children’s well-being? What is the better model of parenthood from the perspective of child outcomes?  Intense disagreements over the definition and future of marriage often rest upon conflicting convictions about parenthood. What Is Parenthood? asks bold and direct questions about parenthood in contemporary society, and it brings together a stellar interdisciplinary group of scholars with widely varying perspectives to investigate them. Editors Linda C. McClain and Daniel Cere facilitate a dynamic conversation between scholars from several disciplines about competing models of parenthood and a sweeping array of topics, including single parenthood, adoption, donor-created families, gay and lesbian parents, transnational parenthood, parent-child attachment, and gender difference and parenthood.

Review
"Well-balanced consideration of two different views of parenthood as a social institution."-Choice

"I highly recommend this thought provoking and compelling book. It examines parenthood at a time when the concept of the family is radically changing, most notably stemming from the rise of single-parent households and divorced and blended families. And it proposes a number of intelligent and important solutions. After all, the long-term health of our representative democracy is dependent on our ability, as parents, to prepare our children for the future."-Leah Ward Sears, former Chief Justice, Georgia Supreme Court

"What is Parenthood? is an invaluable resource for anyone who wishes to think critically about modern parenthood and what the government can and should do to improve families. In bringing together eminent figures from different disciplines and from different political or cultural views about the family, it maintains an important dialogue about the best way forward."-Brian Bix,Frederick W. Thomas Professor, University of Minnesota

"This book is a much needed model for how to bring civility and reason into the culture wars. It is a frank but non-polemical exploration of the science, ethics, and politics that affect our views about when and how we should regulate parenthood—one that opens up rather than shuts down the conversation."-Katharine Bartlett,A. Kenneth Pye Professor of Law, Duke Law School

"This book is a valuable contribution to a critically important, current societal debate on children’s rights with respect to who their parents are and the family structure in which they are reared. It should be read by all involved in that debate, and especially those who will decide on the law and social and public policy that will determine the future of the family and the family of the future."-Margaret Somerville,International Journal of Jurisprudence of the Family

Divine Callings: Understanding the Call to Ministry in Black Pentecostalism, by Richard N. Pitt

One of the unique aspects of the religious profession is the high percentage of those who claim to be "called by God" to do their work. This call is particularly important within African American Christian traditions. Divine Callings offers a rare sociological examination of this markedly understudied phenomenon within black ministry. Richard N. Pitt draws on over 100 in-depth interviews with Black Pentecostal ministers in the Church of God in Christo both those ordained and licensed and those aspiringoto examine how these men and women experience and pursue "the call." Arguing that divine calling is as much a social process as it is a spiritual one, Pitt delves into the personal stories of these individuals to explore their work as active agents in the process of fulfilling their calling. In some cases, those called cannot find pastoral work due to gender discrimination, lack of clergy positions, or educational deficiencies. Pitt looks specifically at how those who have not obtained clergy positions understand their call, exploring the influences of psychological experience, the congregational acceptance of their call, and their response to the training process. He emphasizes how those called to ministry re-conceptualize clericalism in terms of who can be called, how that call has to be certified, and what those called are meant to do, offering insight into how social actors adjust to structural constraints. Richard N. Pitt is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University.

Review
A beautifully written and profoundly sensitive exploration of the meaning of ministry as labor and calling.  It stands not only as a highly original empirical treatment of the Church of God in Christ, but as an important theoretical statement in the sociologies of religion and professions. *Divine Callings* will be read and discussed for many years to come. -Omar McRoberts, University of Chicago

In an educational credentialing world, Richard Pitt takes us deep into an alternative reality--clergy by calling and anointing.  A riveting read, this is serious social science that enlightens as it engages. -Michael O. Emerson, Rice University

In the Beginning: A Short History of the Hebrew Language, by Joel Hoffman

Hebrew as a language is just over 3,000 years old, and the story of its alphabet is unique among the languages of the world. Hebrew set the stage for almost every modern alphabet, and was arguably the first written language simple enough for everyone, not just scribes, to learn, making it possible to make a written record available to the masses for the first time.

Written language has existed for so many years—since around 3500 BCE—that most of us take it for granted. But as Hoffman reveals in this entertaining and informative work, even the idea that speech can be divided into units called “words” and that these words can be represented with marks on a page, had to be discovered. As Hoffman points out, almost every modern system of writing descends from Hebrew; by studying the history of this language, we can learn a good deal about how we express ourselves today.

Hoffman follows and decodes the adventure that is the history of Hebrew, illuminating how the written record has survived, the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient translations, and attempts to determine how the language actually sounded. He places these developments into a historical context, and shows their continuing impact on the modern world.

This sweeping history traces Hebrew's development as one of the first languages to make use of vowels. Hoffman also covers the dramatic story of the rebirth of Hebrew as a modern, spoken language.

Packed with lively information about language and linguistics and history, In the Beginning is essential reading for both newcomers and scholars interested in learning more about Hebrew and languages in general.

Possibly the most exiting book I've read in a decade.
By A. Uittenbogaard
In The Beginning - A short History of the Hebrew Language by Joel M. Hoffman is possibly the most exiting book I've read in a decade. Hoffman's writing style is chipper and friendly; I never thought I'd be grinning widely while reading a book on linguistic theory. But it's more than that. In The Beginning is almost a coming of age novel, not just of the Hebrew language but of the whole of human speech. I'm sure it's often underestimated what the Hebrew language has done for mankind, but Hoffman explains and reveals with so much obvious fun that any reader with even the most modest interest in language feels quickened and finally informed.

The ability to read and write equals the ability to preserve data and complex thought. It equals the ability of a culture to form a reflective continuum the way the universe forms time. But written text used to be nothing more than a string of vague consonantal hints towards spoken words. Esoteric knowledge was always a key without which the text could not be unlocked, and writing was merely an extension of the oral tradition. All of this changed with the incredible invention of the Hebrews to use symbols for vowels. When this art became established reading and writing became available to the masses, and it competes with the printing press for the predicate of most important invention that lead to modern civilization.

Hoffman tells the story with as much feel for flair as for clarity, and In The Beginning treads confidently and with a continuous sense of awe upon the stage of evolution. It lists the unknowns without shame or the idle consolation of conjecture, and revitalizes petrified certainties into wells of alternatives. After a brief introductory chapter Hoffman reviews the 'Rules of the Game,' which is a general essay on the 'Three Theories of the World,' namely 1) The Dumb-Luck Theory-- everything happens by chance and that's it then; 2) The God-Theory-- everything happens because of God and that's it then; and 3) The Science Theory--there is un underlying order to the universe that we humans can understand.

The language in which the Bible was written is a formidable phenomenon and every serious student of the Bible should at least be acquainted with some of the achievements of this language. The Bible is by no means just another book in a bookstore, but a bright bolt of light that caused the bookstore!

Vowels do make a difference
By Amazon Customer
This is a most interesting and enlightening treatise, written with scholarly authoritativeness. The author covers his subject most thoroughly and eloquently, even, as the title claims, it is a "short" history. However, his claim that Hebrew formed the original basis for ancient Greek and Latin would have been better served if he had provided more compelling evidence and documentation for this very startling assertion. The similarity of Aleph-Bet and Alpha-Beta isn't entirely convincing. Yet, in all fairness, the author does make many other revelatory and absorbing points throught his book which certainly seem incontrovertible based on his scholastic background.

A great read for both a linguist and a casual learner!
By Asya Pereltsvaig
Dr. Joel Hoffman's book "In the Beginning" is an excellent introduction into the study of the centuries-long history of Hebrew and its grammar. Hoffman manages to pack a lot of information into a very concise book and his writing style makes it a real pleasure to read. But what distinguishes this book from most books on the history of Hebrew is that it is written by a professional linguist from the perspective of contemporary linguistic theory, which does not equate language with its writing system, or label languages as "primitive" or "complex". Hoffman analyzes (admittedly sparse) information about the state of the Hebrew language in the last three millennia as a linguist would analyze any other language (living or dead). Hoffman does not pretend to have the final word on the subject. Instead, his book provides an excellent "Beginning" for a linguistically sophisticated study of the diachronic adventures of the Hebrew language. Anyone interested in Hebrew should read this book.

From Library Journal
In this excellent and readable examination of current conservative politics, Heineman (history, Ohio Univ.) traces the political history of the past 30 years, placing special emphasis on the role of religious and social conservatism. The author is especially good at showing the shifting relationships among such groups as fiscal and moral conservatives, Catholics and fundamentalists, and libertarians and moderate republicans. Because these alliances change from issue to issue, gauging the direction and strength of conservatism in any political situation proves very difficult. Yet Heineman argues that there is always tremendous potential for conservatism to emerge when the religious aspects become prominent. In his epilog, "There Is No Money in Social Conservatism," Heineman suggests that the appearence of a form of moral populism may bring many aspects of the system together on some kind of common ground. Here is the closest example of what God means to America and why Jesse fears Him so. I would tell your friends about this book and Heineman's other works. Together they form to show how the Right feels America might be wrong today.

The Law and Society Reader IIFrom NYU Press

Law and society scholars challenge the common belief that law is simply a neutral tool by which society sets standards and resolves disputes. Decades of research shows how much the nature of communities, organizations, and the people inhabiting them affect how law works. Just as much, law shapes beliefs, behaviors, and wider social structures, but the connections are much more nuanced—and surprising—than many expect.

Law and Society Reader II provides readers an accessible overview to the breadth of recent developments in this research tradition, bringing to life the developments in this dynamic field. Following up a first Law and Society Reader published in 1995, editors Erik W. Larson and Patrick D. Schmidt have compiled excerpts of 43 illuminating articles published since 1993 in The Law & Society Review, the flagship journal of the Law and Society Association.

By its organization and approach, this volume enables readers to join in discussing the key ideas of law and society research. The selections highlight the core insights and developments in this research tradition, making these works indispensable for those exploring the field and ideal for classroom use. Across six concisely-introduced sections, this volume analyzes inequality, lawyering, the relation between law and organizations, and the place of law in relation to other social institutions.

Review
"The Law & Society Reader II offers academics, students, and the general public a diverse, comprehensive window on some of the most innovative interdisciplinary scholarship on law produced in recent decades. It highlights how the field has become globalized and increasingly aware of the ways in which consciousness infuses legality. The Reader provides an accessible introduction to those new to the field and an indispensable overview for others already familiar with particular facets."-Richard Abel, editor of The Law & Society Reader, 1995

"The  Law & Society Reader II is a cornucopia of knowledge and insight on the biggest questions in the sociolegal tradition. Co-editors Larson and Schmidt have done a fabulous job selecting, organizing, editing, and introducing many of best articles over the last two decades into an invaluable resource for researchers and teachers. Every serious sociolegal scholar needs to have this volume."-Michael McCann,Gordon Hirabayashi Professor for the Advancement of Citizenship, University of Washington

“An important antidote to the still dominant approach in law schools that teaches legal doctrine via isolated appellate opinions. This book puts law, lawyers, and legal institutions in their social and cultural context. Larson and Schmidt provide an engaging follow-up volume to Rick Abel’s groundbreaking 1995 reader, effectively excerpting recent articles from the leading socio-legal studies journal, the Law & Society Review.”-Laura E. Gomez,University of California, Los Angeles

"In this volume Larson and Schmidt have creatively captured the spirit and diversity of law and society research published over the last 20+ years."-Herbert M. Kritzer, editor, Law & Society Review, 2003-07

"Offering a stunning collection of disciplinarily diverse, cutting-edge research . . . this collection describes the way law works as a system of ideas, as a source of social identity, and as a force of social organization, inequality, as well as equality and social change. . . . The anthology will be very useful for students seeking access to this flourishing field of scholarship at both the graduate and undergraduate level, and others who simply want an overview of how law works."-Susan S. Past Imperfect: French Intellectuals, 1944-1956, by Tony Judt

“Past Imperfect is a forthright and uncommonly damning study of those intellectually volatile years [1944-1956]. Mr. Judt…does more than simply describe the ideological acrobats of his subjects; he is a sharp, even a vindictive moralist who indicts these intellectuals for their inhumanity in failing to test their political thought against political reality.”

From Publishers Weekly
Swept up in the vortex of communism, French postwar intellectuals developed a blind spot to Stalinist tyranny. Albert Camus, who had been an authentic moral voice of the Resistance, pretended not to know about the crimes and terrors of the Soviet Union. Jean-Paul Sartre perverted logic to make an apologia for the Soviet invasion of Hungary. Simone de Beauvoir called for social change to be brought about in a single convulsion, or else not at all. Foolish French thinkers, suffering "self-imposed moral anesthesia," defended the credibility of the show trials in Stalinized Eastern Europe. In a devastating study, Judt, a professor of European studies at New York University, argues that the belief system of postwar intellectuals, propped up by faith in communism, reflected fatal weaknesses in French culture such as the fragility of the liberal tradition and the penchant for grand theory. He also strips away the postwar myth that the small, fighting French Resistance was assisted by the mass of the nation.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Judt argues that while most intellectuals were not Communists, they did act as apologists for a system that terrorized the very masses it purported to liberate. Judt's thesis is based on the indifference of French intellectuals toward the atrocities committed primarily by Stalin's Soviet Union under the guise of communism. Anti-Semitism, colonialism, capitalism, existentialism, and fascism are analyzed in their relation to communism and placed into historical context. The infighting and power struggles among the intellectuals (i.e, established writers, artists, philosophers) are also discussed at length. The concluding chapter, exploring the role of the intellectual in modern society, includes some harsh words about the influence of French intellectualism on American academics. Biased but convincing; strongly recommended for academic libraries.

Review
"...Past Imperfect is a well researched, passionately written hatchet job on the illusions and follies of a generation of post-war French Intellectuals. Judt begins by asking why communism dominated political and philosophical conversation in postwar France...Having put this period in context, Judt chronicles the emergence of a new generation of French postwar intellectuals and describes the central issues which preoccupied them: the legacy of four years of which came in their wake; Anti-Americanism and the Cold War; and the battles over French colonialism, especially in Algeria. He points out the key turning points; the Kravchenko and Rousset trials, brought by authors whose accounts of Soviet Communism met with disbelief and worse in Paris; the break between Stalin and Tito; the Rajk and Slansky show trials in east Europe; and finally in 1956, the suppression of the Hungarian uprising. Through it all, Judt traces certain disturbing patterns, especially the almost pathological flirtation of French intellectuals with violence and terror, from the French Revolution to Satre's support for political terrorism and Maoism."-Jewish Quarterly

Good, but not as good as I had hoped
By S. Matthews
This is a decent book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I had expected: Tony Judt's writing is usually crisper and more analytic. Alas, in this case he may have set out to write a book, but what he delivered has more than a whiff of sermon: too many sonorous phrases and not enough clinical analysis. Interestingly, I had exactly the same problem with Furet's 'The Passing of an Illusion', though I thought at the time that that was just a case of Academicianitis. Something about this subject seems to provoke reasonable people to clamber onto a pulpit to deliver an argument that should really be a slam dunk.

Sartre didn't just look like a wall-eyed toad, he was a wall-eyed toad all the way through, but Judt can't quite bring himself to say so. In fact he shows quite a bit of residual indulgence in the way, e.g., he describes Sartre's writing in the sixties as 'silly' when the proper word is 'disgusting'. (Deep in his heart, Judt seems to think his subjects should, in spite of everything, be granted more respect than the current generation and, in particular, more respect than Bernard-Henri Levy, but I don't see why - at least BHL has never endorsed the murder of people he doesn't like). Judt doesn't really in the end manage to explain to me why the little cacomorph and his friends were so indulged for so long.

The best bit is the discussion of the French relationship to liberalism (or why there isn't one), which is unqualifiedly good, together with the remarks on the sociology of postwar Parisian intellectual culture - not surprising, since this is the stuff Judt really knows. On the other hand, the one page summaries, analyses, and dismissals of philosophical positions are slightly embarassing. Richard Wolin got whacked around the quad and assigned 500 pages of Habermas by Richard Rorty recently for this sort of thing. Being on the side of Wolin and Judt, not Rorty, I wish they wouldn't do it. (Slightly) ironically, toward the end, Judt remarks in passing - he could/should have said a lot more - on the intellectual laziness and slovenliness of his subjects: the way they substituted glibness for thought, and showed no qualms about holding forth on a subject, be it economics, sociology, foreign politics or bombinating cockatrices, without knowing, or even seemingly caring, whether they really had the slightest idea. Rabelais's assessment of the Sorbonne needs no revision, 25 generations later.

This is part of a growing shelf of modern stuff to file beside Julien Benda: along with Judt, we have Furet, Wolin, Lilla, etc., but the definitive work on the pathology of French (and German) intellectual culture over the last hundred years has yet to appear. It will eventually: the subject is just too inviting.

Not exactly balanced history
By B. Boeke
Credit goes to Judt for persuasively arguing his point of view on French intellectuals - Sartre above all - and their softness on communism and the Soviet Union in the post-World War II context. It is at once an interesting and clearly written
book, and yet quite irritating in its tone, which tends towards the supercilious. Judt rarely has any doubts about his judgments about people or events, and a bit more modesty would do him greater credit as an historian. It would be all the more engaging if
he allowed the possibility that there are other viewpoints which have merit. That type of concession is found in his much finer volume on Aron, Camus and Blum, but not here. His polemical style and tone are not endearing, but this book is
still worth the read, and his viewpoint needs to be heard and considered, even if it is very one-sided. Judt is not the person to consult for a balanced, unbiased understanding of Sartre's politics, and he is, as usual, too much the apologist for Camus,
whose position on the Algerian war for independence never receives the critical analysis from Judt that is required. But Judt is just the person to consult as a corrective for those unaware of some of the absurdities which, indeed, were part of Sartre's
political engagements in the turbulence of the postwar world. Ironically, Judt somewhat resembles Sartre in his inability to listen to the opposite viewpoint! Still, no one in English has argued better than Judt this critique of French intellectuals'
seduction by the ideology of communism following the war. Strongly recommended, but with major reservations.

Ruthless dissection of French intellectual scene
By A Customer
After reading Tony Judt's relentless ripping apart of Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and other post-war French intellectual fellow-travelers, one might be forgiven for wondering whether the author actually likes France. I am sure he does; it is just the unbelievable pig-headedness and irresponsibility of some of France's most acclaimed "thinkers" in the 1940s and 1950s that he cannot stand. The question that nags at the reader as he progresses through this book is: Just why did anyone take Sartre and co. seriously? Tony Judt not only has the answer, he issues a very pertinent warning about the current French fashion for deriding the intellectual perversions of the immediate post-war era. Putting it bluntly, a certain type of bone-headed universalism and a penchant for meaningless abstract riddles that seem peculiar to French intellectuals have by no means disappeared.
