One Marriage Under God: The Campaign to Promote Marriage in America (Intersections), by Melanie Heath

The meaning and significance of the institution of marriage has engendered angry and boisterous battles across the United States. While the efforts of lesbians and gay men to make marriage accessible to same-sex couples have seen increasing success, these initiatives have sparked a backlash as campaigns are waged to “protect” heterosexual marriage in America. Less in the public eye is government legislation that embraces the idea of marriage promotion as a necessary societal good.    In this timely and extensive study of marriage politics, Melanie Heath uncovers broad cultural anxieties that fuel on-the-ground practices to reinforce a boundary of heterosexual marriage, questioning why marriage has become an issue of pervasive national preoccupation and anxiety, and explores the impact of policies that seek to reinstitutionalize heterosexual marriage in American society. From marriage workshops for the general public to relationship classes for welfare recipients to marriage education in high school classrooms, One Marriage Under God documents in meticulous detail the inner workings of ideologies of gender and heterosexuality in the practice of marriage promotion to fortify a concept of “one marriage,” an Anglo-American ideal of Christian, heterosexual monogamy.

"One Marriage Under God [is] an illuminating ethnographic study."-Women's Review of Books

"Recommended [for] graduate students/faculty."-CHOICE

"Heath’s exemplary scholarship raises critical heterosexual studies to new heights by uncovering the interests and contradictions that underpin the struggle for marriage equality in the U.S." -Chrys Ingraham, author of White Weddings: Romancing Heterosexuality in Popular Culture

[…] [T]he breadth of Heath’s research is remarkable and her insights about marriage promotion astounding.”-Social Forces

An important backdrop to same sex marriage debates
By Orit A Bentovim
Debates about same sex marriage have captured Americans' imagination in recent years. But as Heath's book brilliantly shows, there's an important backdrop to these debates: efforts to promote marriage among heterosexual couples, especially poor and minority couples. DOMA's enactment and implementation across the country has been accompanied by Federal and State marriage promotion programs. Heath spent several months in Oklahoma, where these initiatives first began, and the result is a rich and engaging ethnography of marriage education policies. This is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary marriage, family, and sexuality politics and an excellent resource for sociology classes on marriage and family, gender, political culture, and qualitative methods. I'll be using it next year for my Sociology of Families course.

Excellent ethnographic analysis of marriage promotion policies!
By Jennifer Randles
As the first ethnographic study of marriage promotion politics, Heath's engagingly written and compellingly argued text offers a cogent analysis of political attempts to reinstitutionalize heterosexual marriage in the United States. It offers readers both a detailed overview of the academic and political debates over marriage promotion, as well as rich, theoretically-informed ethnographic data describing how marriage promotion policies play out on the ground. Heath takes the reader inside the marriage education classroom and highlights the voices of those who participate in government efforts to promote marriage, including policymakers, educators, couples, and individuals on welfare who are targeted by such policy efforts. In doing so, she brilliantly describes how marriage promotion policies and programs operate as a form of boundary work that reinforces the primacy of heterosexual marriage.

As a sociology professor who specializes in marriage, families, and social inequality, I highly recommend this text to anyone interested in the changing contours of American marriage! It would be a great addition to both undergraduate and graduate sociology courses on marriage, families, gender, sexuality, and qualitative methods.

The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York (Religion, Race, and Ethnicity), by Peter J. Paris, John W. Cook, James Hudnut

It was from the pulpit of the Riverside Church that Martin Luther King, Jr., first publicly voiced his opposition to the Vietnam War, that Nelson Mandela addressed U.S. church leaders after his release from prison, and that speakers as diverse as Cesar Chavez, Jesse Jackson, Desmond Tutu, Fidel Castro, and Reinhold Niebuhr lectured church and nation about issues of the day. The greatest of American preachers have served as senior minister, including Harry Emerson Fosdick, Robert J. McCracken, Ernest T. Campbell, William Sloane Coffin, Jr., and James A. Forbes, Jr., and at one time the New York Times printed reports of each Sunday's sermon in its Monday morning edition.

For seven decades the church has served as the premier model of Protestant liberalism in the United States. Its history represents the movement from white Protestant hegemony to a multiracial and multiethnic church that has been at the vanguard of social justice advocacy, liberation theologies, gay and lesbian ministries, peace studies, ethnic and racial dialogue, and Jewish-Christian relations.

A collaborative effort by a stellar team of scholars, The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York offers a critical history of this unique institution on Manhattan's Upper West Side, including its cultural impact on New York City and beyond, its outstanding preachers, and its architecture, and assesses the shifting fortunes of religious progressivism in the twentieth century.

Review

”The authors describe the complex congregation in exceedingly careful detail, including a number of archival photographs that bring the narrative to life. Unlike so many congregational histories, difficult periods of tension and conflict are presented alongside feel-good rehearsals of the glory days....The authors and the congregation should be commended for this unique contribution to the field of congregational studies. The research is comprehensive.”

-Sociology of Religion

"There is much to commend it, and my students will be glad to find such a readable book on their syllabi."

-Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

"This is an excellent scholarly resource on liberal Protestant church history and is recommended for all congregational libraries."

-Church and Synagogue Libraries

"A critical history, not a jingoistic celebration....scholarly volume."

-Spirit

Good, basic information (though not the most interesting read!)
By BRIAN A. O'DELL
To my knowledge this is the first book written about The Riverside Church (TRC) in New York City. The book was published in 2004, and I did read it then (full disclosure: I've been a TRC member since 1997). I decided to re-read it in 2010 in light of the congregational 'difficulties' (to put it mildly) that the church has experienced with the loss or 'good riddance' - depending on which member(s) of the church you speak with - of our latest Senior Minister after only 8 months. The 343 page book (with lengthy explanatory footnotes). has six long chapters each written by six scholars not associated / connected with the the church in order to be objective. Each looks at a different aspect of the church either internally or externally to the rest of the world. Since there are 'some' who do see Riverside as the Protestant 'cathedral', 'beacon on the hill'... or 'dinosaur' (again depending on your point of view) 'to the rest of the world' it serves a useful purpose that it should be dissected as to what this church is about. (And at times it does read as interestingly as a science textbook dissection, which is to say, not very!) The essays are uneven I think in the interest factor for outsiders to our church. I think the book IS interesting for those who have been members for awhile - at least a few years - and want to know 'why this chuch IS the way it IS with all its physical grandeur, but less than exciting (in my humble opinon) worship. Wonderful folks who are deeply committed to social justice, but many of whom enjoy playing power politics with and against 'others' and so the church lacks little sense of community. But I digress. Chapter 1 is "The Riverside Church and the Development of Twentieth-Century Protestantism" [I give it a grade of B- as far as interest factor.] Chapter 2 is "Preachers for All Seasons: The Legacy of Riverside's Free Pulpit" [B+ in giving a good overview of the - then - 5 former Senior Ministers, their background, preaching, how each dealt with social justice issue of their particular time (and dealt with the congregation!) and esp. noteworthy sermons each preached.] Chapter 3 is "A Christian Vision of Unity: An Architectural History of the Riverside Church" [Again B- as you wish there were more drawings and photos (no color inserts for God's sake?) and other memorabilia shown.] Chapter 4 is "Universal in Spirit, Local in Character: The Riverside Church and New York City" [B+ This and the next chapters being the 'best' in the book, both look - very honestly and quite critically at times - at how the church has dealt well at times / unsuccessfully at other times with the dynamics of black-white race relations within its membership over the years. But where it has failed miserably (again IMHO) in integrating Latinos/as into the congregation and ignored Asians and their concerns. This in a multicultural city known for its many races and ethnicities. And also, even more problematic perhaps, how the church has failed over the years to adequately look at and deal with issues of class and the poor within the church's surrounding neighboods (other than just preaching about "Emancipation from Poverty" (but not following up - as a church - with concrete, long-term action) - those neighborhoods which haven't been bought up by Columbia University that is!)] Chapter 5 is "The Public Witness of the Riverside Church: An Ethical Assessment" [B which looks at the issues of what the church 'stands for' and how successful it actually is in dealing with those issues.] The last chapter 6: "Congregations within a Congregation: Contemporary Spirituality and Change at the Riverside Church" [C+] which struck me as the least unfocused and lacked the interest factor for me... though it did raise a few interesting points regarding worship and why it is the way it is now, and perhaps not in a good way. Actually in the days of Rev. Fosdick (first Senior Minister) the church had a morning, afternoon and evening worship (the latter for young adults, go figure!) and which over the years was apparently changed to just the ONE morning worship though that reasoning is never explained at all - a justification I'd like to be explored more fully! (More, and different, worship experiences, being a 'plus' in my book!)

Aftermath: A New Global Economic Order? (Possible Futures)From Brand: NYU Press

The global financial crisis showed deep problems with mainstream economic predictions, as well as the vulnerability of the world's richest countries and the enormous potential of some poorer ones. China, India, Brazil, and other counties are growing faster than Europe or America and have weathered the crisis better. Is their growth due to following conventional economic guidelines or to strong state leadership and sometimes protectionism? These issues are basic to the question of which countries will grow in comind decades, as well as the likely conflicts over global trade policy, currency standards, and economic cooperation.

Review
“Few issues facing today’s world are as important as understanding the new global economic crises―in their unity and plurality. This penetrating collection of essays on the global economic crises of our times throws light into a dark tunnel and enables us to understand better the world we live in and how it needs to be transformed.”
-Seyla Benhabib,Another Cosmopolitanism

“Remarkable in its geographic reach and analytical reach, this book offers timely food for thought to social scientists and policy makers interested in explaining the relative success and decline of societies in the age of neoliberalism.”-Michele Lamont, author of How Professors Think: Inside the Curious World of Academic Judgment

“Who won and who lost in the global economic crisis that has dominated the news in the last two years? Aftermath provides surprising and much-needed critical analyses of this question. Supposedly robust, rich democracies have floundered badly, while the growth rates of many developing nations — from Brazil to Turkey — have been impressive. Distinguished economists, sociologists, and political scientists take to this crucial task with insight based on new empirical investigations that should be read by anyone who wants to understand where we are headed in the future.”
-Katherine S. Newman, author of The Accordion Family: Globalization Reshapes the Private World

Peer-Impact Diagnosis and Therapy: A Handbook for Successful Practice with Adolescents, by Vivian Center Seltzer

Adolescents are infamous for their rebellious behavior. Indeed, much of the focus of therapy and clinical intervention with troubled adolescents focuses on their presumed need to rebel against their parents as they define their own identities. Yet psychologist Vivian Center Seltzer argues that approaching work with adolescent clients with this presumption in mind is likely to miss the roots of their problem behavior.

Rather than acting out against parental authority, adolescents in need of clinical help are most often dealing with their disappointing comparisons with their peers—the most relevant others to them during this period of their development. Seltzer explains that it is countless interactions with their peers, at school and elsewhere outside of the home, that are the primary mode of psychological and social development for adolescents. Practitioners must recognize this crucial influence, and perhaps forgo traditional approaches, in order to better work with their adolescent clients.

Peer-Impact Diagnosis and Therapy is a practical professional guide for how to approach and aid troubled teens by accessing the wealth of insight to be gained from understanding the influence of peer interactions on development and on behavior. Full of diagnostic categories and protocols for use with all types of adolescents, as well as guidance, tips, case studies, and offering a targeted model for adolescent group therapy, Seltzer provides professionals with all the tools they need to assist teens on their road to adulthood.

Is the Goddess a Feminist?: The Politics of South Asian GoddessesFrom Brand: NYU Press

In India, God can be female. The goddesses of Hinduism and Buddhism represent the largest extant collection of living goddesses anywhere on the planet. Feminists in the West often draw upon South Asian goddesses as theological resources in the contemporary rediscovery of the Goddess. Yet, these goddesses are products of a male supremacist society.

What is the impact of powerful female deities--their images, projections, textuality, and history--on the social standing and psychological health of women? Do they empower women, or serve the interests of patriarchal culture? Is the Goddess a Feminist? looks at the goddesses of South Asia to address these questions directly.

Not a book about a single goddess or even about a variety of South Asian goddesses, the volume raises questions about images of deities as symbols and the ways in which they function. Contributors discuss contemporary Indian women who have embraced goddesses as spiritually and socially liberating, as well as the seeming contradictions between the power of Indian goddesses and the lives of Indian women. They also explore such topics as the element of male desire in the embodiment of female deities, the question of who speaks for the goddesses, and the politics and theology of Western feminist use of Hindu and Buddhist goddesses as models for their feminist reflections.

Dancing in Chains: The Youth of William Dean Howells (The American Social Experience), by Rodney D. Olsen

In this insightful study of the childhood and youth of William Dean Howells, Dancing in Chains demonstrates how the turbulent social and cultural changes of the early nineteenth century shaped the young Howells's emotional and intellectual life. His early diaries, letters, poetry, fiction, and newspaper columns are used to illustrate Olsen's argument, which also in turn throws light on the dominant tensions in antebellum America.

Accepting the emergent middle-class ethos of civilized morality, with its new conceptions of child rearing and gender spheres, Howells's parents urged him to achieve self-control and individual success while also teaching him to seek the good of others rather than his own glory. For Howells the conflicts coalesced at the time of his leaving home, an increasing common rite of passage for antebellum youth. Trying to affirm his sense of literary vocation, he tested his aspirations against the family's Swedenborgian religious convictions and the antislavery commitments of his village while experimenting with competing literary ideologies in the process of meeting the demands of the new mass reading audience. For Howells the resulting tensions eased toward the end of his youth but reappeared in his more mature works of fiction and social criticism in later years.

Portraying the ordeal of coming of age during a momentous period of American history, Dancing in Chains is a fascinating study with a broad appeal to general readers as well as scholars.

Review
"Dancing in Chains is far more than a sensitive biography (though it is surely that); it is also a model of psychologically informed social and cultural history. Olsen recognizes that psychic conflicts often play themselves out on a higher plane, that psychic and intellectual history are intertwined. He presents a wonderful nuanced picture of Howells."-Jackson Lears, Rutgers University

The Supreme Court and Election Law: Judging Equality from Baker v. Carr to Bush v. Gore, by Richard Hasen

In the first comprehensive study of election law since the Supreme Court decided Bush v. Gore, Richard L. Hasen rethinks the Court’s role in regulating elections. Drawing on the case files of the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist courts, Hasen roots the Court’s intervention in political process cases to the landmark 1962 case, Baker v. Carr. The case opened the courts to a variety of election law disputes, to the point that the courts now control and direct major aspects of the American electoral process.

The Supreme Court does have a crucial role to play in protecting a socially constructed “core” of political equality principles, contends Hasen, but it should leave contested questions of political equality to the political process itself. Under this standard, many of the Court’s most important election law cases from Baker to Bush have been wrongly decided.

Review

“Hasen engagingly draws on internal Court deliberations, as well as political science and legal theory, to assess and criticize dramatic transformations in the role of constitutional law in overseeing the structure of democracy. The Supreme Court and Election Law will interest all those concerned with understanding the relationship between constitutional law and democracy in struggles over how contested ideals of political equality should inform the design of democratic institutions."”
-Richard H. Pildes,NYU School of Law

“A pioneering study of the Court's increasing efforts to regulate the US political system. Hasen addresses both issues of legal doctrine and political science in his sweeping look at the Court's positions on such issues as the status of political parties, voting rights, redistricting, balloting procedures, and campaign finance reform.”
-Bruce Cain,University of California, Berkeley

“Hasen masterfully distills complex legal doctrines and sophisticated political theory into a succinct analysis filled with practical wisdom. Challenging the prevailing view of Bush v. Gore as an aberration, he shows that it is simply another patch in the crazy-quilt constitutional law of elections. Anyone who cares about American democracy should read this original, important, and thought-provoking book.”
-Robert J. Pushaw,Pepperdine University School of Law

“Hasen provides a citizen's guide to the Court's decisions and offers an innovative proposal, contrary to many lawyers’ predispositions, saying why (and when) the Court should intervene but give little guidance to the people devising the laws that regulate our elections. This is a provocative analysis that deserves thorough consideration.”
-Mark Tushnet,Georgetown University Law Center

“A major contribution to the field of election law.”
-Thomas E. Mann,The Brookings Institution

Fantastic overview - must read for political junkies
By Bagels
While Hasen is one the country's top election law scholars, it's his ability to bring topics and issues down to the non-expert's level that makes this book interesting. A survey of the legal system's involvement in issues of elections, this book is a unique and non-partisan look at a relatively recent wrinkle in how America runs and organizes its elections.

Highly recommended.

"A provocative treatment of political martyrdom in the United States . . . . a well-crafted, thought-provoking book."
—The Lincoln Herald

"In the U.S., dead politicians and controversial reformers have frequently been called martyrs to a cause. But achieving martyrdom is more elusive than simply being jailed, murdered, or rejected in fighting for what one believes. This is the thrust of Naveh's argument, which traces the martyr motif in American political culture since the 1830s."
—Choice

"Drawing upon eulogies and obituaries, sermons and biographies, poems and public memorials, Crown of Thorns is most valuable in providing a taxonomy that helps suggest why some public figures sink into oblivion while a very few others belong to the ages."
—The Journal of American History

"Naveh makes admirable use of a wide range of primary sources, particularly those drawn from popular rather than elite culture . . . . well written . . . Crown of Thorns should be of some interest to all who are interested in the dynamics of cultural inertia and social change in the United States."

Unspeakable Acts: Why Men Sexually Abuse Children, by Doug W. Pryor

The sexual abuse of children is one of the most morally unsettling and emotionally inflammatory issues in American society today. It has been estimated that roughly one out of every four girls and one in ten boys experience some form of unwanted sexual attention either inside or outside the family before they reach adulthood.

How should society deal with the sexual victimization of children? Should known offenders be released back into our communities? If so, where, and with what rights, should they be allowed to live? In Unspeakable Acts, Douglas W. Pryor argues that much of this debate, designed to deal with abusers after they have offended, ignores the important issue of why men cross these forbidden sexual boundaries to molest children in the first place and how the behavior can possibly be prevented before it starts.

Incorporating in-depth interviews with more than thirty convicted child molesters, Pryor explores how men become involved with breaking sexual boundaries with children. He looks at how their lives prior to offending contributed to and led up to what they did, the ways that initial interest in sex with children began, the tactics offenders employed to molest their victims over time, how they felt about and reacted to their behavior between offending episodes, and how they were ultimately able to stop.

The author expands our understanding of this often reviled, little understood group, leaving us with the uneasy conclusion that the moral wall separating us from what is defined as extreme, sick behavior is not as opaque as we would like to believe.

From the Back Cover
The sexual abuse of children is one of the most morally unsettling and emotionally inflammatory issues in American society today. It has been estimated that roughly one out of every four girls and one in ten boys experience some form of unwanted sexual attention either inside or outside the family before they reach adulthood. An alarmingly common occurrence, sexual abuse is traumatic and life-altering for children in its impact. Based on in-depth interviews with thirty men who molested their own children or the children of people they knew, Pryor provides a unique glimpse of those who become offenders. His analysis explores how the lives of offenders prior to their offending led up to and contributed to what they did, the ways that initial interest in sex with children began, the tactics offenders employed to molest their victims over time, how they felt about and reacted to their behavior between offending episodes, and how and why they stopped abusing.

A delicate but critical subject
By Joseph G. Langen
Unspeakable acts would also be put out of our awareness if possible. However, sexual abuse of children appears in the news more that anyone would like. This is the only book I know of based on interviews with perpetrators, seeking to understand the influences on their abhorrent behavior. It also searches the thoughts and motivations of such individuals. Beginning to understand these people is the first step to learning how to deal with them in a more effective manner than trying to pretend their behavior does not exist or trying to stamp it out mindlessly. In my opinion, this is a landmark book.
Joseph G. Langen, author of The Pastor's Inferno.

Looking at the inside of an Onion
By A Customer
Right after I was caught for molesting one of my young children, I bought this book to learn who the hell I am and a little bit about how I got into that narrow-minded hell-hole of child sexual interest and action. This book REALLY opened my eyes, and gave hugely rewarding insights into myself (not ones I expected to find!). The author writes clinically and compassionately, and offers superb suggestions at the end on how our criminal justice system could do an awful lot better with family offenders. I've since plead guilty and was sentenced to jail time, treatment, and many years of probation. This book helped me understand myself as an offender, the impact on the child, and the range of conventional and possible public responses to punish and treat this terrible offense. I highly recommend it for troubled offenders who WANT insight into this mindset, as well as for loving spouses and close relatives that want to better understand and support the offender. The writing is good.

Unspeakable Actts Answered the Big Questions
By Jennie Dietz
Unspeakable Acts answered all of the questions that have haunted me for years. It is a wonderful resource for families of pediophiles. Much is written about victims and it is difficult to find information about the abusers. My thanks to the author.
