Superdads: How Fathers Balance Work and Family in the 21st Century, by Gayle Kaufman

“Look!  There in the playground -- with the stroller and diaper bag! It's Superdad! Yes, it's Superdad—the most involved fathers in American history.  And with this careful, compassionate and also critical group portrait, Gayle Kaufman has finally told their story.  If you think men aren't changing—or if you think they somehow get neutered if they are changing—you need to read this book.”—Michael Kimmel, author of Guyland   In an age when fathers are spending more time with their children than at any other point in the past, men are also facing unprecedented levels of work-family conflict. How do fathers balance their two most important roles—that of father and that of worker? In Superdads, Gayle Kaufman captures the real voices of fathers themselves as they talk about their struggles with balancing work and family life.  Through in-depth interviews with a diverse group of men, Kaufman introduces the concept of “superdads”, a group of fathers who stand out by making significant changes to their work lives in order to accommodate their families. They are nothing like their fathers, “old dads” who focus on their traditional role as breadwinner, or even some of their peers, so-called “new dads” who work around the increasing demands of their paternal roles without really bucking the system.  In taking their family life in a completely new direction, these superdads challenge the way we think about long-held assumptions about men’s role in the family unit.  Thought-provoking and heartfelt, Superdads provides an overview of an emerging trend in fatherhood and the policy solutions that may help support its growth, pointing the way toward a future society with a more feasible approach to the work-family divide.

Review
"The voices of superdads come alive as Kaufman describes the work-family challenges faced by men in the 21st century. Superdads is the most articulate and insightful discussion of issues facing contemporary fathers that I have seen in many years."-Scott Coltrane, author of Family Man

"The gender revolution has stalled—but not stopped. Read Superdads on a day when, down in the dumps, you think nothing has changed. Kaufman’s fascinating interviews show how the nurturing father ideal has changed men’s lives, making many willing to shift work responsibilities to meet family caregiving needs." -Joan C. Williams, author of Reshaping The Work-Family Debate

"'The workplace still sees men as men and not as fathers,' Gayle Kaufman, a professor of sociology at Davidson College, notes in her study of emerging new fathers, Superdads.  If managers typically see the men working for them as men, Prof. Kaufman sees them as three distinct types of fathers, all trying to have greater involvement with their children than fathers of previous generations.  Those deeper relationships lead to work-life balance issues that each one of them must resolve differently."-Harvey Schachter ,The Globe and Mail

"“Look! There in the playground—with the stroller and diaper bag! It's Superdad! Yes, it's Superdad—the most involved fathers in American history. And with this careful, compassionate and also critical group portrait, Gayle Kaufman has finally told their story. If you think men aren't changing—or if you think they somehow get neutered if they are changing—you need to read this book.” -Michael Kimmel, author of Guyland

"Superdads is a welcome addition to the expanding collection of rich qualitative studies that bring to life men's everyday joys and struggles as fathers. In particular, Kaufman provides an empirically grounded account of men's intersecting aspirations and responsibilities as fathers and workers. This book will appeal to a wide range of social scientists interested in learning directly from fathers how they perceive and handle work-family conflicts."-William Marsiglio, American Journal of Sociology

Critical Rhetorics of Race (Critical Cultural Communication), by Kent A. Ono

According to many pundits and cultural commentators, the U.S. is enjoying a post-racial age, thanks in part to Barack Obama's rise to the presidency. This high gloss of optimism fails, however, to recognize that racism remains ever present and alive, spread by channels of media and circulated even in colloquial speech in ways that can be difficult to analyze.

In this groundbreaking collection edited by Michael G. Lacy and Kent A. Ono, scholars seek to examine this complicated and contradictory terrain while moving the field of communication in a more intellectually productive direction. An outstanding group of contributors from a range of academic backgrounds challenges traditional definitions and applications of rhetoric. From the troubling media representations of black looters after Hurricane Katrina and rhetoric in news coverage about the Columbine and Virginia Tech massacres to cinematic representations of race in Crash, Blood Diamond, and Quentin Tarantino’s films, these essays reveal complex intersections and constructions of racialized bodies and discourses, critiquing race in innovative and exciting ways. Critical Rhetorics of Race seeks not only to understand and navigate a world fraught with racism, but to change it, one word at a time.

Review
"Many other scholarly works have, of course, explored issues of race depiction in the media...but few have challenged traditional definitions of race and diversity while advocating for change in such a germane, timely manner." -CHOICE

“A timely, imaginative and energetic enlargement of the discourse on identity rhetorics in the 21st century. Through critical examinations of some of the most visible contemporary communications moments, these authors impel us to revisit the temptation to embrace a ‘beyond ideology, race, and interest’ mentality.”-Aaron David Gresson III,The Pennsylvania State University

Very good compilation from experts but falls a bit short
By R. I. Berkman
I teach social media for masters students in media studies, and use it as a required text because it pulls together so many of the fundamental themes related to social media, and contains original and clear works by the acknowledged experts in the field, ranging from dana boyd to Jay Rosen, Clay Shirky, Yochai Benkler, Lawrence Lessig and others.

However, because these works are generally some years older and/or able to be reprinted as they are open source, the book does not bring the reader right up to date on the latest thinking and developments either by these experts or others. But that's true for virtually any book on this topic, and if you use this to teach or inform yourself, be sure to supplement it with work in journals, newspapers, recent conferences etc.

Overall, though, it was a great idea to pull this together, and is a much needed contribution to the field of social media.

Mildly Interesting
By V. Khristov
This was required for a class. I did not find the material in the book at all challenging. It seems to be aimed at a person who understands absolutely nothing about the internet. The essays used are of varying quality: some interesting, some bland. Also, there was a lot of "filler" language used throughout - the same information could have been said in half the space.

Overall, the subject presented is interesting, but this book lacks depth and detail.

America's Colony: The Political and Cultural Conflict between the United States and Puerto Rico (Critical America), by Pedro A Malavet

The precise legal nature of the relationship between the United States and the people of Puerto Rico was not explicitly determined in 1898 when the Treaty of Paris transferred sovereignty over Puerto Rico from Spain to the United States. Since then, many court cases, beginning in 1901, have been instrumental in defining this delicate relationship.

While the legislation has clearly established the nonexistence of Puerto Rican nationhood and lack of independent Puerto Rican citizenship, the debate over Puerto Rico's status continues to this day.

Malavet offers a critique of Puerto Rico’s current status as well as of its treatment by the U.S. legal and political systems. Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States, and Puerto Ricans living on this geographically separate island are subject to the United States’s legal and political authority. They are the largest group of U.S. citizens currently living under territorial status. Malavet argues that the Puerto Rican cultural nation experiences U.S. imperialism, which compromises both the island's sovereignty and Puerto Ricans’ citizenship rights. He analyzes the three alternatives to Puerto Rico's continued territorial status, examining the challenges manifest in each possibility, as well as illuminating what he believes to be the best course of action.

Review

“Provides a new and needed approach to understanding the development and current status of Puerto Rico.”
-Choice

“In an era increasingly concerned with democracy around the world, Malavet reminds us of the forgotten colony in our own backyard ― Puerto Rico. Utilizing a Critical Race/Latino Theory perspective, Malavet make the legal case for a post-colonial future in which reparations will be owed.”
-Adrien K. Wing,University of Iowa College of Law

“America’s Colony incisively analyzes the legal treatment of Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory and the second class treatment of Puerto Ricans. This important book is sure to become an influential critical analysis of the subordination of Puerto Ricans, who contrary to popular opinion are U.S. citizens by birth. Denied representation in the U.S. Congress and the right to vote for President, it is no surprise that Puerto Ricans on the island are denied the education, public benefits, and basic rights that other U.S. citizens enjoy. Importantly, America's Colony traces the legal justification for such treatment, including the amazing U.S. Supreme Court cases from the early twentieth century — decisions that have remained law to this day — that the U.S. Constitution simply does not fully apply to the territory of Puerto Rico. For anyone interested in one of the last American colonies, and modern Puerto Rico, including the controversy over bomb testing on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, Malavet’s book is essential reading.”
-Kevin R. Johnson,University of California at Davis School of Law

Timely challenge to America's international democratic image
By Steven W. Bender
In a season when the 2004 election placed emphasis on counting every vote and Americans valued our political system by contrast to the rampant election fraud in Ukraine, law professor Pedro Malavet has exposed one of the gaping cracks in our national and international political leadership--the U.S. occupation of Puerto Rico that has denied political participation to its residents for over a century without resolution. Observing correctly that few U.S. citizens understand or appreciate the second-class citizenship status of the people of Puerto Rico, Malavet charts a concise but potent history of occupation of Puerto Rico by Spain and then the United States, and proposes a strategy to enable Puerto Ricans to determine their desired status. Most heartening in his analysis is that despite their political second-class citizenship coupled with efforts to Americanize them, Malavet demonstrates that the people of Puerto Rico have managed to forge an independent cultural identity. Their sparkling cultural nationhood heightens the need to change the legal status of "America's colony." Called by one commentator a forgotten colony, Malavet addresses his birthplace with cultural reverence while exposing this underside of American democracy and demanding recognition of the flaws in the U.S.-Puerto Rico colonial relationship.

International migration is often considered a relatively new development in world history. Yet, while there has been a surge in migration since World War II, the worldwide movement of peoples is a longstanding phenomenon. So, too, are the fundamental issues raised by immigration. How do immigrants fit into and affect the polity and society of the country they enter? What changes can or must the receiving state make to accomodate them? What changes in culture and ethnic indentity do immigrants undergo in their new environment? How do they relate to the mix of peoples already present in their new homeland What determines the policies that govern their reception and treatment?

In this volume, expertly edited by a leading American political scientist-lawyer and a leading French historian, twenty-one renowned experts on immigration address these questions and a variety of other issues involving the experiences of immigrants in the city, at the workplace, and in schools and churches. Their essays examine the issues of nationality, citizenship, law, and politics that define the life of an immigrant population. Focusing on the United States and France, this voluem is a social history and a legal and public policy study that comprehensively portrays the dilemmas immigrants present and face.

The Women and War ReaderFrom Brand: NYU Press

War affects women in profoundly different ways than men. Women play many roles during wartime: they are "gendered" as mothers, as soldiers, as munitions makers, as caretakers, as sex workers. How is it that womanhood in the context of war may mean, for one woman, tearfully sending her son off to war, and for another, engaging in civil disobedience against the state? Why do we think of war as "men's business" when women are more likely to be killed in war and to become war refugees than men?

The Women and War Reader brings together the work of the foremost scholars on women and war to address questions of ethnicity, citizenship, women's agency, policy making, women and the war complex, peacemaking, and aspects of motherhood. Moving beyond simplistic gender dichotomies, the volume leaves behind outdated arguments about militarist men and pacifist women while still recognizing that there are patterns of difference in men's and women's relationships to war.

The Women and War Reader challenges essentialist, class-based, and ethnocentric analysis. A comprehensive volume covering such regions as the former Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine, Iran, Nicaragua, Chiapas, South Africa, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and India, it will provide a much-needed resource. The volume includes the work of over 35 contributors, including Cynthia Enloe, Sara Ruddick, V. Spike Peterson, Betty Reardon, April Carter, Leila J. Rupp, Harriet Hyman Alonso, Francine D'Amico, Nancy Scheper-Hughes, and Carolyn Nordstrom.

The intersection of women's experience of and in relation to war is indeed an important and mostly neglected field of study. This book is a positive step towards this direction. However, the essays here are more cursory than substantial. This is a reader, an introduction of sorts, but the best readers collections most often consist of exemplary passages or works in a particular field. None of the essays in this collection have the weight to stand on its own. As a collection, this reader presents a sample of the major issues and areas of study being conducted today. At best, the book contains footnotes to more formidable and groundbreaking works.

Children in Colonial America (Children and Youth in America)From Brand: New York University Press

The Pilgrims and Puritans did not arrive on the shores of New England alone. Nor did African men and women, brought to the Americas as slaves. Though it would be hard to tell from the historical record, European colonists and African slaves had children, as did the indigenous families whom they encountered, and those children's life experiences enrich and complicate our understanding of colonial America.

Through essays, primary documents, and contemporary illustrations, Children in Colonial America examines the unique aspects of childhood in the American colonies between the late sixteenth and late eighteenth centuries. The twelve original essays observe a diverse cross-section of children—from indigenous peoples of the east coast and Mexico to Dutch-born children of the Plymouth colony and African-born offspring of slaves in the Caribbean—and explore themes including parenting and childrearing practices, children's health and education, sibling relations, child abuse, mental health, gender, play, and rites of passage.

Taken together, the essays and documents in Children in Colonial America shed light on the ways in which the process of colonization shaped childhood, and in turn how the experience of children affected life in colonial America.

Review

“Marten adds to the growing body of literature on the history of family life with this rich collection of original essays and transcriptions from primary documents. Divided into thematic subdivisions relating to Europeans and Native Americans, issues of family and community, and the process of becoming American, the 12 essays contributed mainly by history academics examine children's lives from the varied cultures found in Colonial North America and contain copious footnotes and a list of suggested further reading. Such topics as parenting practices, health, education, gender roles, and rites of passage are touched on. The small selection of primary documents (excerpts from letters, diaries, and autobiographies) add depth to an already well-written and researched work whose real strength is its juxtaposition of children's lives across a variety of Colonial cultures.”
-Library Journal

“Few books can be all things to all people, but this one is an exception.”
-Kenneth J. Blume

“A useful and largely impressive anthology on an under-studied topic.”
-PhiloBiblos

“Brings together a broad range of provocative essays on a diverse cast of children from within and without the British American colonies.”
-Journal of Social History

“Children in Colonial America is a highly original contribution to the history of childhood. The collection’s unique strength lies in its great range of regions and peoples represented: from Indian children of Mexico to young Africans in Jamaica, from Separatist Pilgrims in the Netherlands and Plymouth to Catholic girls in Germany, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. Although ideal for the classroom, these essays offer much that will be of interest to seasoned scholars.”

-Gloria L. Main,University of Colorado-Boulder

“Providing fresh historical perspectives on key features of children's lives, this book offers compelling, new materials on childhood in colonial America, and on groups—including Native Americans and Hispanics—too often left out of conventional coverage.”
-Peter Stearns,George Mason University

Creole Religions of the Caribbean: An Introduction from Vodou and Santeria to Obeah and Espiritismo, Second Edition (Religion, Race, and Et

Creolization—the coming together of diverse beliefs and practices to form new beliefs and practices—is one of the most significant phenomena in Caribbean religious history. Brought together in the crucible of the sugar plantation, Caribbean peoples drew on the variants of Christianity brought by European colonizers, as well as on African religious and healing traditions and the remnants of Amerindian practices, to fashion new systems of belief.

Creole Religions of the Caribbean offers a comprehensive introduction to the syncretic religions that have developed in the region. From Vodou, Santeria, Regla de Palo, the Abakua Secret Society, and Obeah to Quimbois and Espiritismo, the volume traces the historical–cultural origins of the major Creole religions, as well as the newer traditions such as Pocomania and Rastafarianism. This second edition updates the scholarship on the religions themselves and also expands the regional considerations of the Diaspora to the U. S. Latino community who are influenced by Creole spiritual practices. Fernandez Olmos and Paravisini–Gebert also take into account the increased significance of material culture—art, music, literature—and healing practices influenced by Creole religions.

Review
“Fernández Olmos and Paravisini-Gebert write with evident expertise, keen to uphold our understandings of how the major Creole spiritualities—everything from Vodou to Rastafari—have always dynamically adapted to change to ensure their survival and flourishing. This second edition is, in short, an extraordinarily rich work for scholars and students alike; it is certain to become the field’s standard text.”-Darren J. N. Middleton,Texas Christian University

"Creole Religions of the Caribbean is a very effective and sympathetic study of the Caribbean religions, and it provides this story in a more accessible way than other publications."- Equinox

"This text successfully dispels the misrepresentations and negative stereotypes societies throughout history have placed on these religions. The authors provide a great deal of research and analysis that is sure to aid both scholars and enthusiasts."-Journal of Folklore Research

“Brings to life the living and lively religious traditions of Caribbean peoples. This new edition offers to scholars and students of Caribbean religions and cultures an illuminating introduction to religious continuity, change, and creativity in the Caribbean region in the past 500 years, especially among the Afro-Caribbean population.” -Ennis B. Edmonds,Kenyon College

“Offers a unique perspective on Caribbean religions and provides well-reasoned explanations for the diverse ways in which African religious traditions were adapted to a new cultural milieu in the diaspora…. A brilliant book and a significant contribution to the literature on Caribbean religions. In short, it leaves no stone unturned.” -Leslie Desmangles,Trinity College

"Creole Religions of the Caribbean is a welcome contribution to contemporary religion."-Jack David Eller,Anthropology Review Database

Students of ATR: Recommended Reading
By Stephanie Rose Bird
"Creole Religions of the Caribbean: An Introduction from Vodou and Santeria, to Obeah and Espiritismo (Religion, Race and Ethnicity" provides an excellent, scholarly over view of many religions and paths based on African Traditional Religion (ATR). This book paints a very clear portrait of what all of these practices have in common with each other and with ATR as well as how they differ. Anyone who studies Pan-African religions, comparative religion, African mythology and folklore or alternative spirituality, as well as those engaged in Caribbean studies will find "Creole Religions of the Caribbean" of great interest. There is no need to languish in mystery on these topics with such a solid piece of research as this on hand to resource. Written by two university professors "Creole Religons of the Caribbean" is not for the faint-hearted or light reader; this is the real deal.

A powerful introduction into a fascinating subject
By Abu Amled
This is a tremendously readable academic text. It is accesible enough for a layperson and very useful for academics.
Each spiritual tradition is placed within its historical and cultural context, and the authors very effectively trace their evolution based on the available sources.
I was especially pleased that they even mentioned some of the changes and adaptations that the traditions have experienced due to the migration of practitioners outside of the Caribbean.
An excellent place to start learning about Creole religions.

A Closer View on Afro Caribbean Faiths & Systems
By Derric (Rau Khu) Moore author of MAA AANKH vol.I, Kamta: A Practical Kamitic Path for Obtaining Power and Maa: A Guide to the Kamitic Way for Personal
I really enjoyed this book because it gave me a lot of insight into the various African influenced beliefs that exist in the Caribbean and South America. I have in my short lived life encountered a number of people who were Rastafarians, Santeros, Paleros and Spirististas. When I first met these individuals, I had not read this book, so most of what they were telling me about their beliefs and faith, had me at awe, since I came from a Pentecostal background. The most influential individual that I met was an old Black man I called Papa, from Cuba who was a Santero, Spiritist and a member of the all male society Abakua. Although Papa was sworn to secrecy, a lot of what he shared with me had to do with Afro-Cuban culture and the various religious syncretism that occurred in order for the spiritual systems in Cuba to survive. It was through Papa I received the inspiration to syncretized my own beliefs with my culture unashamed, which I wrote about in my own work, MAA AANKH: Finding God the Afro-American Spiritual Way, by Honoring the Ancestors and Guardian Spirits and Maa: A Guide to the Kamitic Way for Personal Transformation. The cool thing was that after losing contact with Papa. Years later, I found this book and most of what he told me about his way of life was written in this book dealing with Santeria, Espiritisimo and Abakua. When I realized this, I became very grateful for having met Papa.

So in short, I recommend this book if you are interested in getting a general idea about the Afro-Caribbean faiths and systems.

A Great NYC History Book
By Dave From Ohio
If you are looking for a thorough and well-organized history of New York City this book will suit your needs. Sure, it may not be as detailed as "Gotham" but most of us will not want that level of depth. This book is wisely broken into sections that mirror the terms of the various governors and mayors of the Big Apple-and, really, why wouldn't that be the best way to present this story. The reading is quick and clear and you'll know everything the average person would want to know about NYC.

deadly boring
By Jesse Kanner
Having just moved to NYC I bought this dog expecting to get a quick brush up on the fascinating story of America's Greatest City. Instead I was burdened with endless trivia about who was mayor or who ran Tammany Hall at any given moment in New York's history.
Obviously this angle is part of the big picture of The City, but it comes off the page very flat and, sadly, uninteresting. There is scant attention paid to the million and one other details about New York life that one really wants to hear about: art, culture, social life, transportation, etc.
The writing is intelligent enough. The author is clearly a smart person with a lot of interest in his subject. It's just that enduring this book is more like watching someone's vacation slides and less like the inspiring, terse and revealing story you hope you'd get when you bought the thing.

A Succinct History
By Francis McInerney
A Short History is exactly that. Succinct and to the point, structured around the political evolution of the city, using New York's succession of mayors as its main vehicle.
Editing: Four Stars. Simple structure and well managed.
Copy Editing: Four Stars. One or two things slipped by. James, Duke of York, after whom the city is named, is called, oddly, Duke James instead of the Duke of York, or more properly, York. Otherwise clean copy.
