About the Author

Jonathan D. Sarna is the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University and Chief Historian of the National Museum of American Jewish History. He has written, edited or co-edited more than twenty-five books, including American Judaism: A History, winner of the “Jewish Book of the Year” award from the Jewish Book Council.

Adam D. Mendelsohn is Director of the Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research and Associate Professor of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. He is the co-editor of Jews and the Civil War: A Reader (NYU Press, 2010) and of Transnational Traditions: New Perspective on American Jewish History.

Solving a Paradox through History

This anthology of scholarly essays offers insights into an era and answers some haunting questions about the attitudes of Jews to slavery both in the North and South. After all, the release from slavery and forced labor is celebrated in the Passover rite. But there is more to this book then the issue of slavery. The book's sections introduce the early history of Jews in the slave trade; the wariness of evangelical abolitionists; soldiers on both sides (there were a couple all-Jewish units); the quandary of divided families (which affected everyone); the role of women on the homefront; anti-Semitism, which led to the restriction of Northern chaplains to Christians and General Grant's Order No. 11, both of which overturned by Lincoln himself; and the changes that occurred after the war.

It is difficult for a modern America-born liberal-minded person to enter the shoes of recently arrived immigrants and minorities who faced prejudice. Keeping a low profile and adapting to the customs of the land was and is a means of survival and tolerance. In the 1860s, immigrant Jews were chiefly from Germany; their attitudes differed from those other Jews from central Europe who experienced pogroms and especially the liberal but failed 1848 revolutions. Thus, a developed sympathy for Southern positions and way of life among those Jews living below the Mason-Dixon line brought them into the Confederate army and political administration, while those in the North accepted the concept of a united America above all. Abolition played little role. Indeed, the literal Bible was cited to justify slavery by influential Northern rabbis. Some Jews were abolitionists, however, and Polish-born Ernestine Rose was a vigorous opponent of slavery and equally outspoken proponent of women's rights.

Among the wealth of information was the newspaper anti-Semitic propaganda based on "shoddy", first in reference to craftsmanship of clothing and armaments and later personified as Mr. Shoddy. I thought, as I read, of all the anti-Islamic cartoons that followed the attack on New York's twin towers. Indeed, the book offers parallels of all the belied minorities, including our own Native Americans and Japanese-Americans during WWII, who entered the military and served with distinction. This book is an important sociological text, and I learned much.

This book covers a subject many are totally unfamiliar with. I enjoyed the detail, although sometimes tedious. Jews in that time were not any different from other Americans fighting on both sides - whether they were male or female, recent immigrants or long time citizens.

changing the discussion on Latina youth

This book shifts our conversations about Latina young women in terms of their experiences around sexuality. It is asking different and important types of questions about safe sex and Latina girls and importantly, the author actually talks with young people to learn more about this topic. The study is well done. And it is also useful in thinking about how we might improve sex education for young people.

A Right-on! Text: Don't get it twisted!

Too many studies on Latinos/as focus on California or New York. This study was done in Chicago. It's unique in that it has a mix of Chicanas and Puerto Rican females. This book is a great edition to growing work on the sexual formations and decisionmaking of young ladies, especially those of color. The whole point of this book is to ask teen Latinas who did NOT get pregnant why and how they were able to do so. I liked that this book didn't feel oppressive, but also didn't present the subject group as goddesses either. I debate whether this may be too academic for teen Latinas to read. However, I think Latina daughters and mothers could have great, honest conversations if both read the book and then discussed one night or weekend. This book tries to be sexual orientation-diverse. Still, I read the word "lesbian" often and don't recall ever seeing "bisexual." Most females I know come out as bisexual before ever coming close to identifying as lesbian. The Latina lesbians interviewed here seemed to all have white girlfriends and I noticed that the author never explores why that is. This is a strong text and I actually think any high school with a large Latino/a study body should own it. I salute the academic who put this together.

Not worth it. Investigative skills were subpar. It is very possible she primed these young women she interviewed to reply to the manner in which they did. She never explained of provided the exact wording she would say before they responded leaving us to believe the girls came up with these replies all on their own. It is very easy to prime a 13 year old girl into saying what they say. I don't consider it a credible research project for lack of detail and depth of the interview process, other than what type of clothes she would wear and her tone towards the subjects. Save some trees and just get the ebook if you need this for school, but if you don't need it then look into better literature.

Local 560, in which the government filed civil suit against the largest Teamsters Union local in New Jersey, successfully charging that the local was essentially a Mob-run organization. It was in this case that the Department of Justice first used the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO). An appendix follows each case, containing all manner of court documents, with testimony and judges' opinions. In presenting such detailed information, Jacobs provides insight into the mechanics of investigation and prosecution. A book that is hard to refuse!

What mob figure is more famous than that of John Gotti? What was done to bring him down? How did the government finally manage to make the charges stick? Busting the Mob is a great insight into that very question.
While this book covers organized crime connection into the teamster union as well as other major mob bosses, it was the Gotti case that had me gripping the book tightly with a wealth of facts, witnesses and testimony.
Each case presented is in fact, well laid out, with actual trial testimony. There is actual court documents, investigation notes and so much more included. This book was well put together and an excellent read. What you read about the mob versus what is fact are usually two different things, this book may shock you in some cases, but it should open you eyes in all cases. Enjoyable and amazing and the price makes it hard for you to refuse!

Freedom's Prophet is a long-overdue biography of Richard Allen, founder of the first major African-American church and the leading black activist of the early American republic. A tireless minister, abolitionist, and reformer, Allen inaugurated some of the most important institutions in African-American history and influenced nearly every black leader of the nineteenth century, from Douglass to Du Bois.

Allen (1760–1831) was born a slave in colonial Philadelphia, secured his freedom during the American Revolution, and became one of the nations leading black activists before the Civil War. Among his many achievements, Allen helped form the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, co-authored the first copyrighted pamphlet by an African American writer, published the first African American eulogy of George Washington, and convened the first national convention of black reformers. In a time when most black men and women were categorized as slave property, Allen was championed as a black hero. As Richard S. Newman writes, Allen must be considered one of America's black Founding Fathers.

In this thoroughly engaging and beautifully written book, Newman describes Allen's continually evolving life and thought, setting both in the context of his times. The Definitive Biography of a Black Founding Father

Who was Richard Allen? Among other things, he was the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, first black author to be granted federal copyright and spiritual leader of early black America.

Richard Newman has delivered a compelling account of Allen's ascension to leadership, his symbolic representation of black religion and his personal sacrifice to the cause of justice. Through humanizing anecdote, well crafted prose and lucid analysis, this book has succeeded in its goals:

1.) The story keeps coming back to the meaning of black leadership through the lens of Richard Allen's work. "Black prophetic leadership has historically critiqued American glorification in favor of a broader vision of national salvation." (Newman, 297) With this in mind, Newman observes that Allen uses his faith, the print press, and access to power in the nations capital to achieve his goals--or more specifically God's goals. Newman takes care to avoid reducing Allen's faith to ideology. The suggestion that Allen inaugurates a tradition of abolitionism in the media is quite powerful adding layers to Allen's image as a black founding father.

2.) Allen is something of an untarnished historical figure. Newman makes it clear that many found Allen to be overbearing, and annoyingly persistent as an individual. Not to mitigate his historical importance, but to shed light on personal characteristics.

3.) Newman's treatment of the 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic with respect to Richard Allen's leadership is a brilliant description of an understudied and underappreciated, but defining moment in American history.

A Great Founding Father

Surprisingly, despite Richard Allen's towering achievements, no modern biography of his life and work existed before Richard Newman's current work. Newman's detailed research and captivating style fills this void admirably. As suggested by the subtitle (Bishop Richard Allen, the AME Church, and the Black Founding Fathers), Newman's biography of Allen is in many ways also a biography of a race as a lived experience in the early American republic. The engaging account of the establishment of the first black church and the first black denomination are worth the proverbial price of the book.

One caveat, the title of chapter six, A Liberating Theology, should not cause readers to assume that Rev. Richard Allen preached liberation theology. As evidenced by The Doctrines and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which mimicked the ideals of Wesley's Methodist Church, Allen's theology maintained the basic doctrinal principles of conservative Methodism. Allen's liberating theology highlighted the equality of all people as image bearers, the conversion experienced based upon faith in Christ alone, the importance of progressive sanctification, and the call to outreach--doing works of service.

For a lively portrayal of one of America's great founding fathers, of any race, Freedom's Prophet is the book of choice.

Standing for Right

I truly love this book; not because I am a member of the AME Church but because this book offers the reader a sense of pride in who they are and perhaps who they would like to become. It recognizes that Richar Allen and Absalom Jones and many others were definitely businessmen of the highest degree. They knew how to start, conduct, and maintain their own endeavors. They also knew how to work with people of all cultures and suggested to others that this is what should be done. They stood up for what was right and did not mind writing rebuttals to articles and/or statements they felt were unfair. They encouraged others to disagree in writing. This is still a good philosophy today.
