Tropics of Desire: Interventions from Queer Latino America (Sexual Cultures), by Jose A. Quiroga

From its sweaty beats to the pulsating music on the streets, Latin/o America is perceived in the United States as the land of heat, the toy store for Western sex. It is the territory of magical fantasy and of revolutionary threat, where topography is the travel guide of desire, directing imperial voyeurs to the exhibition of the flesh.

Jose Quiroga flips the stereotype upside down: he shows how Latin/o American lesbians and gay men have consistently eschewed notions of sexual identity for a politics of intervention. In Tropics of Desire, Quiroga reads hesitant Mexican poets as sex-positive voices, he questions how outing and identity politics can fall prey to the manipulations of the state, and explores how invisibility has been used as a tactical tool in opposition to the universal imperative to come out.

Drawing on diverse cultural examples such as the performance of bolero and salsa, film, literature, and correspondence, and influenced by masters like Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin and a rich tradition of Latin American stylists, Quiroga argues for a politics that denies biological determinism and cannibalizes cultural stereotypes for the sake of political action.

Review

"A brilliant and provocative book, admirably observant of historical detail and subtly attentive to cultural nuance. Quiroga shies away from easy generalizations and painstakingly, lovingly, reflects on a variety of Latin American and Latino queer manifestations, from literature to performance. This luminous critical exercise is matched by the author's no less dazzling prose. This book not only furthers queer studies in Latin America, it is, in itself, a beautiful performance that should not be missed."

-Sylvia Molloy,Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities, New York University

"I've been waiting for this book, savoring its previews. Reading Quiroga's agile and powerful prose is itself one of the adventures offered here. His balancing act between deadly serious issues of identity and control and the fun and pride of maneuvering accentuates these spectacular accounts of lesbian and gay creativity in the dense social contexts of Latino lives."

-Doris Sommer,Professor of Latin American Literature, Harvard University

"A vivid analysis of how many Latin Americans have crafted alternative modes of understanding sexuality."

-Hispanic American Historical Review

"Incisive and witty, Quiroga's survey of the constructions of homosexuality in Latin America and the Latino U.S. includes brilliant readings of major literary figures—Villaurrutia, Pinera, Cabrera—as well as pop culture icons, from La Lupe to Ricky Martin."

-Daniel Balderston,Chair of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Iowa

Libro chevere on gay Latino culture!
By A Customer
Too many gay Latin books focus on Spain, basically (though unintentionally) reinforcing the idea that homosexuality is a European phenomenon. To add salt to the wound, they focus upon ancient, obtuse Spanish writings rather than the cool cultural products being made by living gay Latinos. This book avoids that trap. Though there is a brief, cursory mention of Garcia Lorca, all the works analyzed here are about Latin Americans and US Latinos. Quiroga looks at cultural products from these two groups and provides commentary that combines the best thought of queer studies thinkers (Sedgwick, Halperin) with Latino academics (Oboler, Fusco). This book doesn't get bogged down in separating Latin Americans from US Latinos or privileging one group over the other. The book is male-focused, but it is conscious of that and it does include a chapter on lesbian writer Lydia Cabrera. This book is wonderful like Jose Munoz' "Disidentifications" and Manrique's "Eminent Maricones," instead of being boring and cluttered like Molloy's anthology or "?Entiendes?" It's not perfect. Quiroga uses much hyperacademic babble: many sentences I read twice or thrice and they never made sense. He, like all current writers, problematizes the term "gay" but is totally uncritical of this concept "queer." Chapter introductions are long and have nothing to do with the main topics. I don't agree with some of what he said (Example: Gay Latino Carlos dolls are not an ounce as offensive as Ricky "I love Geore W. Bush" Martin.) Still, this book gets progressively better and I may even suggest that people read the last chapters first. This book is a must-have for gay Latino readers.

Benevolent Repression: Social Control and the American Reformatory-Prison Movement, by Alexander W. Pisciotta

The opening, in 1876, of the Elmira Reformatory marked the birth of the American adult reformatory movement and the introduction of a new approach to crime and the treatment of criminals. Hailed as a reform panacea and the humane solution to America's ongoing crisis of crime and social disorder, Elmira sparked an ideological revolution. Repression and punishment were supposedly out. Academic and vocational education, military drill, indeterminate sentencing and parole—"benevolent reform"—were now considered instrumental to instilling in prisoners a respect for God, law, and capitalism.

Not so, says Al Pisciotta, in this highly original, startling, and revealing work. Drawing upon previously unexamined sources from over a half-dozen states and a decade of research, Pisciotta explodes the myth that Elmira and other institutions of "the new penology" represented a significant advance in the treatment of criminals and youthful offenders.

The much-touted programs failed to achieve their goals; instead, prisoners, under Superintendent Zebulon Brockway, considered the Father of American Corrections, were whipped with rubber hoses and two-foot leather straps, restricted to bread and water in dark dungeons during months of solitary confinement, and brutally subjected to a wide range of other draconian psychological and physical abuses intended to pound them into submission. Escapes, riots, violence, drugs, suicide, arson, and rape were the order of the day in these prisons, hardly conducive to the transformation of "dangerous criminal classes into Christian gentleman," as was claimed. Reflecting the racism and sexism in the social order in general, the new penology also legitimized the repression of the lower classes.

Highlighting the disparity between promise and practice in America's prisons, Pisciotta draws on seven inmate case histories to illustrate convincingly that the "March of Progress" was nothing more than a reversion to the ways of old. In short, the adult reformatory movement promised benevolent reform but delivered benevolent repression—a pattern that continues to this day.

A vital contribution to the history of crime, corrections, and criminal justice, this book will also have a major impact on our thinking about contemporary corrections and issues surrounding crime, punishment, and social control.

Review

"Benevolent Repression fills a maor gap in our histories of U.S. prisons—disregard for the network of men's reformatories. It seems incredible that, until now, historians neglected such a large and influential branch of the prison system. Pisciotta more than makes up for the lapse, however, with this informative and valuable study."

-Nicole Rafter, author of Partial Justice: Women, Prisons and Social Control

"Provocative and insightful. . . . With the publication of this excellent work, Pisciotta has established himself as one of the most important of the prison historians to whom we should listen in the future."

-The Criminologist

"Pisciotta's study is a major contribution to the history of crime and punishment in America. His extensive research on the origins and development of reformatories challenges the accepted interpretation that these institutions had a reformative influence on the corrections system. This work sets the stage for a revised understanding of the institutionalization movement in uvenile corrections."

-John A. Conley,Professor and Chair of Criminal Justice, State University College at Buffalo

Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: New Insights and Scholarship (Jewish Studies in the Twenty-First Century)From NYU Press

Over the past generation, scholars have devoted increasing attention to the diverse forms that Jewish mysticism has taken both in the past and today: what was once called “nonsense” by Jewish scholars has generated important research and attention both within the academy and beyond, as demonstrated by the popular fascination with figures such as Madonna and Demi Moore and the growing interest in spirituality.
In Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah, leading experts introduce the history of this scholarship as well as the most recent insights and debates that currently animate the field in a way that is accessible to a broad audience. From mystical outpourings in ancient Palestine to the Kabbalah Centre, and from attitudes towards gender to mystical contributions to Jewish messianic movements, this volume explores the various expressions of Jewish mysticism from antiquity to the present day in an engaging style appropriate for students and non-specialists alike.

Unbecoming Blackness: The Diaspora Cultures of Afro-Cuban America (American Literatures Initiative), by Antonio Lopez

2014 Runner-Up, MLA Prize in United States Latina and Latino and Chicana and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies In Unbecoming Blackness, Antonio López uncovers an important, otherwise unrecognized century-long archive of literature and performance that reveals Cuban America as a space of overlapping Cuban and African diasporic experiences.

López shows how Afro-Cuban writers and performers in the U.S. align Cuban black and mulatto identities, often subsumed in the mixed-race and postracial Cuban national imaginaries, with the material and symbolic blackness of African Americans and other Afro-Latinas/os. In the works of Alberto O’Farrill, Eusebia Cosme, Rómulo Lachatañeré, and others, Afro-Cubanness articulates the African diasporic experience in ways that deprive negro and mulato configurations of an exclusive link with Cuban nationalism. Instead, what is invoked is an “unbecoming” relationship between Afro-Cubans in the U.S and their domestic black counterparts. The transformations in Cuban racial identity across the hemisphere, represented powerfully in the literary and performance cultures of Afro-Cubans in the U.S., provide the fullest account of a transnational Cuba, one in which the Cuban American emerges as Afro-Cuban-American, and the Latino as Afro-Latino.

Review
"Unbecoming Blackness is a stunning tour de force: it serves as a call for those critically engaged in the African diaspora work with a focus on Latin America to return to the archive and to study the wealth of information that remains there, unnoticed....Lopez forces readers to rethink notions of blackness so that these ideas are specific to place, yet also to consider the fluidity of these discourses in relation to physical movement and their reestablishment in new locations.  His study also demands fluent interdisciplinarity: Lopez analyzes texts, photographs, sound recordings, and film, all of which challenge readers to expand beyond their comfort zone as scholars.  This text is an extraordinary addition to Cuban studies, Cuban American studies, US Latina/o and Latin American studies, American studies, African American studies, and African diasporic studies."-Vanessa K. Valdes,MELUS: The Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States

“Unbecoming Blackness promises to make a transformative impact on Cuban American Literary Studies; it will certainly put López on the map as one of the field’s most important and groundbreaking scholars.”-Ricardo Ortiz, author of Cultural Erotics in Cuban America

Guadalupe in New York: Devotion and the Struggle for Citizenship Rights among Mexican Immigrants, by Alyshia Galvez

Every December 12th, thousands of Mexican immigrants gather for the mass at New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s feast day. They kiss images of the Virgin, wait for a bishop’s blessing—and they also carry signs asking for immigration reform, much like political protestors. It is this juxtaposition of religion and politics that Alyshia Gálvez investigates in Guadalupe in New York.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a profound symbol for Mexican and Mexican-American Catholics and the patron saint of their country. Her name has been invoked in war and in peace, and her image has been painted on walls, printed on T-shirts, and worshipped at countless shrines. For undocumented Mexicans in New York, Guadalupe continues to be a powerful presence as they struggle to gain citizenship in a new country.

Through rich ethnographic research that illuminates Catholicism as practiced by Mexicans in New York, Gálvez shows that it is through Guadalupan devotion that many undocumented immigrants are finding the will and vocabulary to demand rights, immigration reform, and respect. She also reveals how such devotion supports and emboldens immigrants in their struggle to provide for their families and create their lives in the city with dignity.

Review
"Galvez' book is a fascinating and valuable study of the intersection between contemporary religious practice and national identity among New York City's Mexican immigrant community."-Paul Kahan,Religious Studies Review

“Galvez’s findings offer much to consider for students of religious, ethnic, and transnational identities.”-Choice

“Gálvez’s rich ethnographic study of Mexican immigrants in New York City highlights their devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe not only as a religious practice but as a means to create community and public life in the United States. Given the ongoing and increasing presence of Mexicans immigrants in the Northeast, Guadalupe in New York is an important study that social scientists, educators, religious workers, and public servants should read to understand the persistent and complex role that Guadalupe devotion plays in the lives of Mexicans in the United States.”

-Joseph M. Palacios,Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Georgetown University

“Portrays the dilemmas of being a recent Mexican immigrant in New York City today. This book analyzes how the cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe provides a means for immigrants to articulate their aspirations for belonging and, ultimately, citizenship in the United States. Written with vivid grace, this book is a pleasure to read and should be required reading for all concerned with these issues.”
-Renato Rosaldo,Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences, Emeritus, Stanford University

“Professor Galvez presents the social and anthropological theoretical framework for all these developments clearly and succinctly, making this book a valuable addition to academic studies on Latinos in the United States and an excellent college text. But all readers will find the individual immigrant stories and the organizational travails thoroughly engaging and the journeys of faith inspiring.”-American Catholic Studies

Comic Book Crime: Truth, Justice, and the American Way (Alternative Criminology), by Nickie D. Phillips, Staci Strobl

Superman, Batman, Daredevil, and Wonder Woman are iconic cultural figures that embody values of order, fairness, justice, and retribution. Comic Book Crime digs deep into these and other celebrated characters, providing a comprehensive understanding of crime and justice in contemporary American comic books. This is a world where justice is delivered, where heroes save ordinary citizens from certain doom, where evil is easily identified and thwarted by powers far greater than mere mortals could possess. Nickie Phillips and Staci Strobl explore these representations and show that comic books, as a historically important American cultural medium, participate in both reflecting and shaping an American ideological identity that is often focused on ideas of the apocalypse, utopia, retribution, and nationalism.    Through an analysis of approximately 200 comic books sold from 2002 to 2010, as well as several years of immersion in comic book fan culture, Phillips and Strobl reveal the kinds of themes and plots popular comics feature in a post-9/11 context. They discuss heroes’ calculations of “deathworthiness,” or who should be killed in meting out justice, and how these judgments have as much to do with the hero’s character as they do with the actions of the villains. This fascinating volume also analyzes how class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation are used to construct difference for both the heroes and the villains in ways that are both conservative and progressive. Engaging, sharp, and insightful, Comic Book Crime is a fresh take on the very meaning of truth, justice, and the American way.

Review
"Carrying ahead the project of cultural criminology, Phillips and Strobl dare to take seriously that which amuses and entertains us—and to find in it the most significant of themes. Audiences, images, ideologies of justice and injustice—all populate the pages of Comic Book Crime. The result is an analysis as colorful as a good comic, and as sharp as the point on a superhero’s sword."-Jeff Ferrell, author of Empire of Scrounge

"Innovative, exciting, and truly interdisciplinary, Phillips and Strobl pen a wonderful book on the iconic cultural figures in contemporary American comic books. Phillips and Strobl use criminal justice, criminology, law, history, sociology, and related social sciences to argue that comic books and the characters that inhabit those spaces constitute a rather comprehensive understanding of crime and justice in America. Phillips and Strobl's book is made up of 10 succinct chapters, all edgy and creative. The book's most persuasive component may be the final substantive chapter in which Phillips and Strobl present the impact of this attention to crime fighting, which has led to astronomical numbers of Americans incarcerated. If readers were to only read one chapter of the book, it should be the final chapter....Comic Book Crime is an essential book for anyone interested in truth, justice, and the American way, but more importantly who defines those notions and how. Summing Up: Highly recommended."-A.R.S. Lorenz,CHOICE

“Comic Book Crime is one of those rare books that is both academically respectable and accessible to the general reader…Phillips and Strobl have not only read more comics than you have, they have thought about them deeply, and related them to contemporary social concerns. Comic Book Crime is definitely worth reading, both for those interested in its subject, and as a model of how to approach thematic surveys of popular culture.”
-, American Studies

"Comic Book Crime is an important book devoted to a medium that has long been dismissed."-Scott Elingburg,Popmatters

“Comic Book Crime: Truth, Justice, and the American Way is an impressive study that investigates not only comic book culture but the conditions of fictional worlds where a different sense of justice is at work.  So obviously the comics present an alternate American society; and the book also takes a look at the development of the American law system and its possible flaws, past and present corruption and other imperfections that called for fictional heroes such as Batman and Superman in the first place.”-Pop Culture Shelf

“Students and the public as well as academics should be interested in and entertained by this scholarly treatment of a popular culture form.”-Jack David Eller,Anthropology Review Database

"Philips and Strobl are criminologists, and they take a distinctly criminological approach to their examination of stories about law and order in comic books, but their book should appeal to all social science and humanities scholars with an interest in comics.  The authors are also comic book insiders who volunteer to serve as patient mentors to those of us who are new to the genre, explaining key words like ‘retcon,’ and core processes like ‘crossover event.’  This is a very accessible guide for the comic book newcomer that is also mindful of ‘fanboy’ readers.”-Men and Masculinities

"Another important and original contribution to cultural criminology and the study of popular culture more generally. Phillips' and Strobl's work lays out the primacy of crime, violence, hegemony, and retribution to American conceptualizations of mythic justice."-Michelle Brown,co-author of Criminology Goes to the Movies: Crime Theory and Popular Culture

“Phillips and Strobl provide a fascinating depiction of the type of crime-laden worlds these superheroes reside, the paths to justice for these superheroes, and the characteristics that comic books portray superheroes having.” -Journal of American Culture

Brilliant analysis...perfect for criminology students
By Emily B Horowitz
I'd recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about how comic books influence the way we view crime and justice. Particularly good for teaching undergraduates about cultural criminology and, in particular, how we can use comic books, and humor/satire in general, to understand and critique contemporary U.S. criminal justice practice and policy. Well-written and easy to read...excellent book.

In a Queer Time and Place: Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives (Sexual Cultures), by J. Jack Halberstam

In her first book since the critically acclaimed Female Masculinity, Judith Halberstam examines the significance of the transgender body in a provocative collection of essays on queer time and space. She presents a series of case studies focused on the meanings of masculinity in its dominant and alternative forms’especially female and trans-masculinities as they exist within subcultures, and are appropriated within mainstream culture.

In a Queer Time and Place opens with a probing analysis of the life and death of Brandon Teena, a young transgender man who was brutally murdered in small-town Nebraska. After looking at mainstream representations of the transgender body as exhibited in the media frenzy surrounding this highly visible case and the Oscar-winning film based on Brandon's story, Boys Don’t Cry, Halberstam turns her attention to the cultural and artistic production of queers themselves. She examines the “transgender gaze,” as rendered in small art-house films like By Hook or By Crook, as well as figurations of ambiguous embodiment in the art of Del LaGrace Volcano, Jenny Saville, Eva Hesse, Shirin Neshat, and others. She then exposes the influence of lesbian drag king cultures upon hetero-male comic films, such as Austin Powers and The Full Monty, and, finally, points to dyke subcultures as one site for the development of queer counterpublics and queer temporalities.

Considering the sudden visibility of the transgender body in the early twenty-first century against the backdrop of changing conceptions of space and time, In a Queer Time and Place is the first full-length study of transgender representations in art, fiction, film, video, and music. This pioneering book offers both a jumping off point for future analysis of transgenderism and an important new way to understand cultural constructions of time and place.

Review

“An extremely honest and provocative book. Judith Halberstam’s In A Queer Time and Place both validates and admires the beauty of the transperson as well as the genderqueer in this new era of identity performance. It is an incredible portrayal of the partnership between trans issues and gay and lesbian issues that I applaud with a full heart.”
-JD Samson, from the band Le Tigre

“Halberstam’s marvelous new book combines fierce argumentation, vivid description, astute as well as hilarious commentary. The author not only provides a powerful critique of common defenses and dismissals of 'postmodernism,' but offers a redefinition of ‘identity politics’ for the new millennium as well.“
-Lisa Duggan, author of Twilight of Equality: Neoliberalism, Cultural Politics, and the Attack on Democracy

“This small seductive book pours warmth as Halberstam confesses and connects movements of pop culture and high art to a deeper understanding of the potentials of the body. She includes us in her world and its privileged understanding of her subject....In a Queer Time displays Halberstam’s sophisticated understanding of contemporary culture in a plain and engaging tone.”
-Pop Matters

“Halberstam’s text is academically important, critiquing identity politics and examining uncommon but essential transgender representations in art, film, and society.”
-The Bloomsbury Review

“The wide-ranging scope of (Halberstam’s) work both serves to make her book accessible to many kinds of readers as well as to show the wide scope in which her argument registers. This makes her book a joy to read. Similarly, her wit and ability to capture large theoretical terms in rich and layered (and funny!) images contributes to the pleasure of this book of ‘theory’.”
-The Cream City Review

Great queer analysis of English and American culture

Well written, smart and eye opening. Not only for those interested in queer study. I especially liked the chapter on The Full Monty and Austin Powers.
