Dreaming Blackness: Black Nationalism and African American Public Opinion, by Melanye T. Price

Black Nationalism is one of the oldest and most enduring ideological constructs developed by African Americans to make sense of their social and political worlds. In Dreaming Blackness, Melanye T. Price explores the current understandings of Black Nationalism among African Americans, providing a balanced and critical view of today’s black political agenda. She argues that Black Nationalism continues to enjoy moderate levels of support by most black citizens but has a more difficult time gaining a larger stronghold because of increasing diversity among blacks and a growing emphasis on individualism over collective struggle. She shows that black interests are a dynamic negotiation among various interested groups and suggests that those differences are not just important for the "black agenda" but also for how African Americans think and dialogue about black political questions daily.

Using a mix of everyday talk and impressive statistical data to explain contemporary black opinions, Price highlights the ways in which Black Nationalism works in a "post-racial" society. Ultimately, Price offers a multilayered portrait of African American political opinions, providing a new understanding of race specific ideological views and their impact on African Americans, persuasively illustrating that Black Nationalism is an ideology that scholars and politicians should not dismiss.

Review

“Price has given us one of the few and one of the best studies of Black Nationalism and African American public opinion. She goes beyond the Malcolm v. Martin binary to interrogate the tendencies toward separatism and integrationism that are present in virtually all African Americans.”
-Charles P. Henry, author of Long Overdue: The Politics of Racial Reparations

“Price (Wesleyan Univ.) utilizes different research methods to illuminate the complex characteristics of black nationalist ideology among African Americans. The book’s strength is its combination of analyses of focus group data as well as large survey data sets. The material from focus groups paints a vivid picture of real people discussing these issues, and this allows the author to illustrate many of her key points.”-CHOICE

Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and The Latinization of Americal Culture, by Frances Negrón-Muntaner

Boricua Pop is the first book solely devoted to Puerto Rican visibility, cultural impact, and identity formation in the U.S. and at home. Frances Negrón-Muntaner explores everything from the beloved American musical West Side Story to the phenomenon of singer/actress/ fashion designer Jennifer Lopez, from the faux historical chronicle Seva to the creation of Puerto Rican Barbie, from novelist Rosario Ferré to performer Holly Woodlawn, and from painter provocateur Andy Warhol to the seemingly overnight success story of Ricky Martin. Negrón-Muntaner traces some of the many possible itineraries of exchange between American and Puerto Rican cultures, including the commodification of Puerto Rican cultural practices such as voguing, graffiti, and the Latinization of pop music. Drawing from literature, film, painting, and popular culture, and including both the normative and the odd, the canonized authors and the misfits, the island and its diaspora, Boricua Pop is a fascinating blend of low life and high culture: a highly original, challenging, and lucid new work by one of our most talented cultural critics.

Wonderfully written and sophisticated book!
By Lupita
It boggles my mind how anyone could think that this book is spiteful and useless. I have read this book cover to cover and find it to be a wonderfully written and sophisticated book, even humbling to most who read it. Also, after you read the book, you understand that the cover is about an important moment for Puerto Ricans in American culture, not about Ricky Martin as an individual. Yet, one thing is for sure: This book is not for die-hard fans but for people who want to think about Latino culture.Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and American Culture (Sexual Cultures)

Boricua Pop is Sensational
By Loyal Citizen
Few books interrogate the legacy of colonialism and the politics of Puerto Rican "shame" in and out of the island from such an informed and deeply felt sense of conviction born of intellectual aptitude and intellectual passion. Frances Negrón Muntaner is to be commended for this. A fantastic and necessary book for anyone wanting to learn about Puerto Rico and it's various post 1898 afterlives.

Ricky Martin Fans, Don't Buy this Book
By S. M. Hyde
Although there is an attempt to sell this book to Ricky's fans by putting Ricky's picture on the cover, if you are a Ricky Martin fan, don't buy this book. The author clearly hates and envies Ricky and the chapter on him is insulting and extremely negative. The rest of the book contains nothing to redeem it. I am sorry that I spent any money on this spiteful, useless book.

Muslim American Youth: Understanding Hyphenated Identities through Multiple Methods (Qualitative Studies in Psychology), by Michelle Fine,

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent “war on terror,” growing up Muslim in the U.S. has become a far more challenging task for young people. They must contend with popular cultural representations of Muslim-men-as-terrorists and Muslim-women-as-oppressed, the suspicious gaze of peers, teachers, and strangers, and police, and the fierce embodiment of fears in their homes.

With great attention to quantitative and qualitative detail, the authors provide heartbreaking and funny stories of discrimination and resistance, delivering hard to ignore statistical evidence of moral exclusion for young people whose lives have been situated on the intimate fault lines of global conflict, and who carry international crises in their backpacks and in their souls.

The volume offers a critical conceptual framework to aid in understanding Muslim American identity formation processes, a framework which can also be applied to other groups of marginalized and immigrant youth. In addition, through their innovative data analytic methods that creatively mix youth drawings, intensive individual interviews, focused group discussions, and culturally sensitive survey items, the authors provide an antidote to “qualitative vs. quantitative” arguments that have unnecessarily captured much time and energy in psychology and other behavioral sciences.

Muslim American Youth provides a much-needed road map for those seeking to understand how Muslim youth and other groups of immigrant youth negotiate their identities as Americans.

By TC
Muslim American Youth was a very thoughtful read. Muslim American Youth does a wonderful job in helping the reader to understand the trials and tribulations of the Muslim youth in the United States post 9/11. This book really helps bring to light problems in today's society that are usually never brought to the fore-front. This read also helps to show the many commonalities between "Muslim" teens and teens of various ethnicities. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about what the "hyphen" truly is and to anyone who wants to learn more about a culture that's image is truly misunderstood.

I would recommend this book
By Amazon Customer
I would recommend this book. Being the visual learner that I am, I throughly enjoyed the illustrations by youth of all backgrounds throughout the book. This text gave not only some background of Islam in the United States, but personal stories of the youth being studied and statistics as well. I felt like I learned a lot of valuable information. There are not many books out there focusing on how the last two decades have affected our younger generation. The chapter called The Hyphen was my favorite to read.

Mothers Who Kill Their Children: Understanding the Acts of Moms from Susan Smith to the

A special kind of horror is reserved for mothers who kill their children. Cases such as those of Susan Smith, who drowned her two young sons by driving her car into a lake, and Melissa Drexler, who disposed of her newborn baby in a restroom at her prom, become media sensations. Unfortunately, in addition to these high-profile cases, hundreds of mothers kill their children in the United States each year. The question most often asked is, why? What would drive a mother to kill her own child?

Those who work with such cases, whether in clinical psychology, social services, law enforcement or academia, often lack basic understandings about the types of circumstances and patterns which might lead to these tragic deaths, and the social constructions of motherhood which may affect women's actions. These mothers oftentimes defy the myths and media exploitation of them as evil, insane, or lacking moral principles, and they are not a homogenous group. In obvious ways, intervention strategies should differ for a teenager who denies her pregnancy and then kills her newborn and a mother who kills her two toddlers out of mental illness or to further a relationship. A typology is needed to help us to understand the different cases that commonly occur and the patterns they follow in order to make possible more effective prevention plans.

Mothers Who Kill Their Children draws on extensive research to identify clear patterns among the cases of women who kill their children, shedding light on why some women commit these acts. The characteristics the authors establish will be helpful in creating more meaningful policies, more targeted intervention strategies, and more knowledgeable evaluations of these cases when they arise.

Review

"Meyer and Oberman's comprehensive work represents the most extensive study to date of American mothers who have killed their children. Written in a manner that is accessible to the general public, and at the same time useful for medical and legal experts, they use extensive resources and expert methodology to provide a sophisticated contemporary classification of these cases. Perhaps the most significant and unique contribution of this work lies in its invitation to the reader to test the limits of compassion, taking this unique opportunity to understand the tragic causes of child mortality so that we can begin to lay the foundations for understanding these cases as patterned and predictable, identify women and children at risk, and prevent these tragedies."

-Margaret G Spinelli M.D,Director of the Maternal Mental Health Program The New York State Psychiatric Institute and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons

"This book is informative and interesting and would be useful both in academic and professional settings.”

-Feminism & Psychology

"Through vivid sketches of the lives of women wh have killed their children, Meyer and Oberman shatter the myth that such mothers are necessarily mad or monstrous. This carefully researched account shows how social forces can contribute to both the causes and the cures for infanticide. Readers will find themselves shifting from asking, 'How could she do that?' to 'How could we have let that happen to her?'."

Fascinating book...
By Mary E. Becker
This book traces a tradition of which most Americans are unaware: mothers who kill an infant post partum have generally been treated leniently (prior to the last ten years or so) by the criminal justice system. Indeed, in England there is a statute so providing. Oberman and Meyer explore the tradition and its probable policy basis and whether it should be retained.

Great read about dark but fascinating subject matter
By rkrystofolski
This book is a detailed look at both famous (Susan Smith and Melissa Drexler AKA "The Prom Mom") and the lesser known cases of maternal filicide

Don't judge this book by the cover
By Elisabeth Young
I ordered this book based on the cover - assuming that this would be a case by case synopsis of various murdering moms. However, I was wrong. This book is like reading 1000 articles from a medical journal. It is definitely not for casual crime readers such as myself. The vignettes are a paragraph long at best then dissolve into various author opinions on what is wrong with the state of our social service departments, society in general, fathers today, poverty, and on and on. I was really surprised by the Susan Smith case review as the author seemed to completely miss or purposely disregard the fact that the real motive for killing her children was prompted by her dream of a new life with a rich man at work. I do no think her vague unnamed personality disorder was the main factor there. Not recommended.

Fraternity Gang Rape: Sex, Brotherhood, and Privilege on Campus, by Peggy Reeves Sanday

This widely acclaimed and meticulously documented volume illustrates, in painstaking and disturbing detail, the nature of fraternity gang rape. Drawing on interviews with both victims and fraternity members, Peggy Reeves Sanday reconstructs daily life in the fraternity, highlighting the role played by pornography, male bonding, and degrading, often grotesque, initiation and hazing rituals.

In a substantial new introduction and afterword, Sanday updates the incidences of fraternity gang rape on college campuses today, highlighting such recent cases as that of Duke University and others in the headlines. Sanday also explores the nature of hazing at sororities on campus and how Greek life in general contributes to a culture which promotes the exploitation and sexual degradation of women on campus. More broadly, Sanday examines the nature of campus life today and the possibility of creating a rape-free campus culture.

Review

“Full of insights . . . an important contribution . . . written in accessible prose and ideal for course use.”
-Women's Review of Books

“A classic. Fraternity Gang Rape is a fascinating analysis of how all-male groups such as fraternities or athletic teams may create a rape culture where behavior occurs that few individuals acting alone would perpetrate. The new introduction and afterword shed light on how this pernicious problem continues today, insightfully illuminating the complicity of society in the failure of accountability for acquaintance rape.”

-Mary P. Koss,co-editor of No Safe Haven

“A powerful and important book.”

-Contemporary Psychology

“Powerfully moving and analytically provocative. . . . If the college or university at which AJS readers teach has a fraternity or sorority system, this book will be useful in understanding the way those organizations not only construct the gender relations between women and men on campus but also provide a map of male domination that members can take with them for the rest of their lives.”
-Michael S. Kimmel,American Journal of Sociology

“Sanday draws a chilling picture of fraternity society, its debasement of women and the way it creates a looking-glass world in which gang rape can be considered normal behavior and the pressure of group-think it powerful.”
-The Philadelphia Inquirer

Honest book covering an extremely embarrassing part of society. ...
By Kocese
Honest book covering an extremely embarrassing part of society. Somehow in some manner no one ever believes the girl, it's quite the black eye of society that colleges, places of higher education are more than willing to sweep them under the carpet.

Thorough and fearless, truthful and long overdue
By Lisa Simeone
Sanday is one of the few researchers with the guts to expose the dark side of the American worship of fraternities and athletes. This American obsession runs so deep and has been unquestioned for so long it's no wonder her research angers those in a position of privilege (think Citadel, think Tailhook). Check out Bernard Lefkowitz's more recent OUR GUYS for a male journalist's take on the same culture of privilege.

It's time for people to quit shielding campus thugs in the name of letting boys be boys. There ARE colleges where fraternities and sororities don't exist, and those of us who went there still made friends, contributed to the community, and had rich social lives. We also had far fewer rapes.

An amazing book...all parents should read it
By Elizabeth Seccuro
While not a light subject by any means, this was the first book of its kind I could ever find. I also sent a copy to my prosecutor, Police Chief and my husband, a fraternity guy. I am the survivor of a fraternity gang rape and this book really does get to the bottom of herd mentality and why these unspeakable crimes occur, why they are covered up and why they keep happening.

If you are a parent sending a son or daughter off or back to college, I strongly suggest you read this. University brochures would have us think there is no such thing as gang rape on our bucolic campuses, but I am living proof that it happens. God bless this author for shining a light on this terrible subject. While this will never be a best-seller, it should. Well-written, compelling, repulsive and edifying, I am grateful it exists.

Embodiment and the New Shape of Black Theological Thought (Religion, Race, and Ethnicity), by Anthony B. Pinn

Black theology tends to be a theology about no-body. Though one might assume that black and womanist theology have already given significant attention to the nature and meaning of black bodies as a theological issue, this inquiry has primarily taken the form of a focus on issues relating to liberation, treating the body in abstract terms rather than focusing on the experiencing of a material, fleshy reality. By focusing on the body as a physical entity and not just a metaphorical one, Pinn offers a new approach to theological thinking about race, gender, and sexuality.

According to Pinn, the body is of profound theological importance. In this first text on black theology to take embodiment as its starting point and its goal, Pinn interrogates the traditional source materials for black theology, such as spirituals and slave narratives, seeking to link them to materials such as photography that highlight the theological importance of the body. Employing a multidisciplinary approach spanning from the sociology of the body and philosophy to anthropology and art history, Embodiment and the New Shape of Black Theological Thought pushes black theology to the next level.

Jewish Radicals: A Documentary Reader (Goldstein-Goren Series in American Jewish History)From Brand: NYU Press

Winner of the 2013 New York Book Show Award in Scholarly/Professional Cover Design Jewish Radicals explores the intertwined histories of Jews and the American Left through a rich variety of primary documents. Written in English and Yiddish, these documents reflect the entire spectrum of radical opinion, from anarchism to social democracy, Communism to socialist-Zionism. Rank-and-file activists, organizational leaders,  intellectuals, and commentators, from within the Jewish community and beyond, all have their say. Their stories crisscross the Atlantic, spanning from the United States to Europe and British-ruled Palestine.   The documents illuminate in fascinating detail the efforts of large numbers of Jews to refashion themselves as they confronted major problems of the twentieth century: poverty, anti-semitism, the meaning of American national identity, war, and totalitarianism. In this comprehensive sourcebook, the story of Jewish radicals over seven decades is told for the first time in their own words.

Review
"Recommended for upper-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty."-CHOICE

“This book will stimulate the mind and gladden the heart of anyone who cares about the history of American Jews or the American left and the always close, if eternally tempestuous relationship between them. Tony Michels has assembled a feast of documents and is an expert guide to their meaning and context.”

-Michael Kazin, author of American Dreamers: How the Left Changed a Nation

"He has made an important contribution to out understanding of one significant aspect of American Jewish history"-The Jewish Chronicles

"From America's leading historian of Yiddish-speaking radicalism comes this rich anthology of contemporary Jewish-American voices from the 1880s through the 1940s. Among the diverse experiences and points of view reflected here, Michels convincingly identifies three dominant threads—socialist awakening as a rite-of-passage, the agony and ecstasy of political struggle, and Yiddish-based education as a labor-centered project with an uncertain agenda for national emancipation." -Leon Fink, editor of Labor Studies in Working-Class History of the Americas

"Whether devoured in big chunks, or savored in small bites, Jewish Radicals is a fun and fortifying read."-Jewish Currents

"Michels has assembled a fine collection of primary sources, one that successfully illuminates the experiences of Jewish radicals and uncovers many unknown and remote voices. This book will appeal to both lay readers and a scholarly audience."-Evan C. Rothera ,Yearbook of German-American Studies

"[Michels] has made an important contribution to our understanding of [a] significant aspect of American Jewish history."-Buffalo Jewish Review

A fantastic glimpse into the life of old-left Jewish radicals
By Bob Goise
This was just the book I was looking for. A way to connect with my radical Jewish immigrant roots without it being heavily focused on the religious aspects of Judaism. It's also a quick read in that each section is only a few pages long.
