He underwent trial for sedition during World War II, almost landing in prison, and ultimately became a Cold War critic before dying in obscurity in 1977.

Gerald Horne links passing and fascism, the two main poles of Dennis's life, suggesting that Dennis’s anger with the U.S. as a result of his upbringing in Jim Crow Georgia led him to alliances with the antagonists of the U.S. and that his personal isolation which resulted in his decision to pass dovetailed with his ultimate isolationism.

Irrational Need to Falsely "Color" Lawrence Dennis

I read this book and I found myself sympathizing with the "fascist" Lawrence Dennis and feeling disgusted with the irrational need of Prof.Horne to label Dennis "black" or "African American." Dennis was no more "black" in any factual sense of the word than a German Jew was "non-Aryan." I also found that Dennis was not really a "fascist" in the purest sense of the word but more a critic of capitalism who could see the weakness in liberal democracy that made it vulnerable to fascism. I had to admire the audacity of Dennis, in a way. Prof. Horne is upset that Dennis could be "white" despite his olive complexion and tightly curled hair. Horne ought to know that "whiteness" is a porous concept and always has been despite official tenets praising the alleged "purity" of the "white race" or "Aryan race" or whatever. Sure, even prominent fascists or Nazis would note in private correspondence that Dennis was rather far from "Aryan" in his looks, but they didn't say anything about it in public. There's nothing unusual or new about that. From the beginning of the "white race" concept, people have been trained to politely overlook the suspicious darkness of other "whites."

Schwartz writes this book as a scholar—she is a professor and dean at Jewish Theological Seminary—but also as a rebbetzin herself; for nearly 25 years, she was a rabbi's wife. (Her husband died in 2004.) Here, she examines the complex rebbetzin role in America over the past century, demonstrating how marriage to a rabbi could sometimes provide women with an accepted ministerial identity when they could not be openly ordained themselves. Schwartz rescues important but heretofore unstudied rebbetzins from historical obscurity and assesses their contributions as educators, organizers, charitable fund-raisers, writers and public speakers. Overall, this well-written book successfully uses the rebbetzin as a window into larger issues: the evolution of Judaism in America, the opening of new possibilities for women in the late 20th century and the changing mores of the institution of marriage. "The Rabbi's Wife" is wonderful! Shuly Rubin Schwartz has achieved magic by writing a work of true scholarship that is so readable. She helps us to see what has been, for so long, invisible- the unheralded role of the Rebbetzin in making the American synagogue tick. She introduces us to unforgettable characters, and enables us to see the progress that women have made in this country over the last century. Most interestingly, she shows us marriages that were true partnerships in every sense of the word.

A Great Read

The Rabbi's Wife is not only first rate scholarship, it is a great read. Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz has given us a peak into the private lives of very public women, who dedicated their lives as helpmates to their clergy spouses and in the process helped shape American Judaism in the 21st Century. But this is not a book just for Jews about their own clergy and their spouses. It is a story that needs to be read and pondered by all faith communities who look to their clergy and their families as the center of their faith community and congregations. In addition to being a first tier scholar, Dr. Schwartz tells us amazing tales of women who rose above the restraints of their time and place in modern American history to lead, model, and persevere as visionaries and religious leaders in their own right. We are also permitted a glimpse into the complex, fishbowl existence of our clergy experiencing the hope, commitment, tensions, and pressures which surround their lives of service to the faithful. This is a must read for anyone who belongs to a church, synagogue, or mosque led by married clergy.

This decrease in vaginal births after cesarean sections (VBAC) is even more alarming: one third of hospitals and one half of physicians do not even allow a woman a trial of labor after a c-section, and 90 percent of women will go on to have the c-section surgery again for subsequent pregnancies. Of comparative developed countries, only Brazil and Italy have higher c-section rates; c-sections occur in only 19% of births in France, 17% of births in Japan, and 16% of births in Finland.  How did this happen? Theresa Morris challenges most existing explanations of the unprecedented rise in c-section rates, which locate the cause of this trend in physicians practicing defensive medicine, women choosing c-sections for scheduling reasons, or women’s poor health and older ages. Morris’s explanation of the c-section epidemic is more complicated, taking into account the power and structure of legal, political, medical, and professional organizations; gendered ideas that devalue women; hospital organizational structures and protocols; and professional standards in the medical and insurance communities. She argues that there is a new culture within medicine that avoids risk or unpredictable outcomes and instead embraces planning and conservative choices, all in an effort to have perfect births. Based on 130 in-depth interviews with women who had just given birth, obstetricians, midwives, and labor and delivery nurses, as well as a careful examination of local and national level c-section rates, Cut It Out provides a comprehensive, riveting look at a little-known epidemic that greatly affects the lives, health, and families of each and every woman in America.

As Morris notes, C-sections increase the risk of maternal complications while not appearing to impact birth outcomes significantly. Challenging conventional wisdom, Morris's interviews reveal that some doctors feel their hands are tied by the legal system, for which a prompt C-section indicates that the hospital has fulfilled its responsibilities to the patient in the event of a lawsuit; hospital policies like constant fetal monitoring, which limits the movement a laboring mother needs to facilitate a vaginal birth, and the requirement that mothers who have already had cesarians cannot have vaginal births for subsequent children; and medical training that no longer teaches methods of delivering breech or multiple births vaginally. This Book Explains a LOT!

I've had two emergency c-sections and a whole lot of questions about them both, so I was thrilled to get the chance to read an advance copy of Cut It Out: The C-Section Epidemic in America. Wow! I knew I'd been lied to, but until I read this book I didn't realize how much misinformation I'd been given. The C-section rate is going up and this book does a great job of explaining how and why it's happened.

That 1% risk of uterine rupture that I was willing to accept by trying for a VBAC? I thought it was a 1% risk of me dying. Turns out that the actual risk to our lives was much lower. But the insurance companies who influence hospital policy won't let one woman take a small, calculated, risk. They're dealing with hundreds of patients and lumping the risk for everyone into one decision.

What chills me most is the idea that parents will sue if something goes wrong with the baby and that they're willing to accept injury to the mother if the hospital did "everything that can be done" for their baby. Even if "everything that can be done" is more dangerous to them both.

I know that not everyone is going to want to read this book, but I hugely recommend it. It's fascinating and scary and I really think that the system needs to change.

And if you know someone who's had a C-section, give her some extra hugs. They really are harder.

Excellent discussion of the reasons behind the c-section epidemic.

While C-sections can be lifesaving, beyond a certain point (approx 10-15 percent of births) they expose women and babies to increased risk - especially for those women planning to have more children. So how did we end up with a 33 percent C-section rate? This book attempts to answer that question and makes suggestions to lessen the C-section rate. I recommend this book to anyone who objects to the increasing medicalization of birth.

Note to author: There is a typo on page 172 of the hardcover edition: "maternal morality" should read "maternal mortality." This occurs in the sentence just before the note 41 superscript.

Important exposition and call to action

Granted the author is somewhat biased in her presentation of the basic problem. That is a shame, because I think it can be shown that there is a problem, even with an entirely unbiased presentation. But her analysis of why this problem has occurred is insightful and important. This book is an engaging discussion of a very important topic. I hope that it will become widely read and will serve as an impetus for change. it has certainly gotten me thinking.

Childhood Deployed examines the reintegration of former child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Based on eighteen months of participant-observer ethnographic fieldwork and ten years of follow-up research, the book argues that there is a fundamental disconnect between the Western idea of the child soldier and the individual lived experiences of the child soldiers of Sierra Leone. Susan Shepler contends that the reintegration of former child soldiers is a political process having to do with changing notions of childhood as one of the central structures of society.

For most Westerners the tragedy of the idea of “child soldier” centers around perceptions of lost and violated innocence. In contrast, Shepler finds that for most Sierra Leoneans, the problem is not lost innocence but the horror of being separated from one’s family and the resulting generational break in youth education. Further, Shepler argues that Sierra Leonean former child soldiers find themselves forced to strategically perform (or refuse to perform) as the“child soldier” Western human rights initiatives expect in order to most effectively gain access to the resources available for their social reintegration. The strategies don’t always work—in some cases, Shepler finds, Western human rights initiatives do more harm than good.

While this volume focuses on the well-known case of child soldiers in Sierra Leone, it speaks to the larger concerns of childhood studies with a detailed ethnography of people struggling over the situated meaning of the categories of childhood.It offers an example of the cultural politics of childhood in action, in which the very definition of childhood is at stake and an important site of political contestation.

About the Author
Walt Whitman was born on Long Island and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a carpenter. He left school when he was 11 years old to take a variety of jobs. By the time he was 15, Whitman was living on his own in New York City, working as a printer and writing short pieces for newspapers. He spent a few years teaching, but most of his work was either in journalism or politics. Gradually, Whitman became a regular contributor to a variety of Democratic Party newspapers and reviews, and early in his career established a rather eccentric way of life, spending a great deal of time walking the streets, absorbing life and talking with laborers. Extremely fond of the opera, he used his press pass to spend many evenings in the theater. In 1846, Whitman became editor of the Brooklyn Eagle, a leading Democratic newspaper. Two years later, he was fired for opposing the expansion of slavery into the west. Whitman's career as a poet began in 1885, with the publication of the first edition of his poetry collection, Leaves of Grass. The book was self-published (Whitman probably set some of the type himself), and despite his efforts to publicize it - including writing his own reviews - few people read it. One reader who did appreciate it was essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote a letter greeting Whitman at "the beginning of a great career." Whitman's poetry was unlike any verse that had ever been seen. Written without rhyme, in long, loose lines, filled with poetic lists and exclamations taken from Whitman's reading of the Bible, Homer, and Asian poets, these poems were totally unlike conventional poetry. Their subject matter, too, was unusual - the celebration of a free-spirited individualist whose love for all things and people seemed at times disturbingly sensual. In 1860, with the publication of the third edition on Leaves of Grass, Whitman alienated conventional thinkers and writers even more. When he went to Boston to meet Emerson, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, essayist Oliver Wendell Holmes, and poet James Russell Lowell, they all objected to the visit. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Whitman's attentions turned almost exclusively to that conflict. Some of the greatest poetry of his career, including Drum Taps (1865) and his magnificent elegy for President Abraham Lincoln, "When Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" (1865), was written during this period. In 1862, his brother George was wounded in battle, and Whitman went to Washington to nurse him. He continued as a hospital volunteer throughout the war, nursing other wounded soldiers and acting as a benevolent father-figure and confidant. Parts of his memoir Specimen Days (1882) record this period. After the war, Whitman stayed on in Washington, working as a government clerk and continuing to write. In 1873 he suffered a stroke and retired to Camden, New Jersey, where he lived as an invalid for the rest of his life. Ironically, his reputation began to grow during this period, as the public became more receptive to his poetic and personal eccentricities. Whitman tried to capture the spirit of America in a new poetic form. His poetry is rough, colloquial, sweeping in its vistas - a poetic equivalent of the vast land and its varied peoples. Critic Louis Untermeyer has written, "In spite of Whitman's perplexing mannerisms, the poems justify their boundless contradictions. They shake themselves free from rant and bombastic audacities and rise into the clear air of major poetry. Such poetry is not large but self-assured; it knows, as Whitman asserted, the amplitude of time and laughs at dissolution. It contains continents; it unfolds the new heaven and new earth of the Western world." American poetry has never been the same since Whitman tore it away from its formal and thematic constraints, and he is considered by virtually all critics today to be one of the greatest poets the country has ever produced.

By examining the public identity of the so-called welfare queen and its role in hindering democratic deliberation, The Politics of Disgust shows how stereotypes and politically motivated misperceptions about race, class and gender were effectively used to instigate a politics of disgust.

The ongoing role of the politics of disgust in welfare policy is revealed here by using content analyses of the news media, the 1996 congressional floor debates, historical evidence and interviews with welfare recipients themselves. Hancock's incisive analysis is both compelling and disturbing, suggesting the great limits of today's democracy in guaranteeing not just fair and equitable policy outcomes, but even a fair chance for marginalized citizens to participate in the process.

How 'not in my backyard' grew to 'not in our country'

When welfare was originally developed in the 1930's, the white women who were elgible for this government assistance (the rolls were racially segregated until the 1960's) were supposed to go on welfare and stay at home with their children to meet the 'ideal' WASP gender role of the homemaker.

Even if they lacked a male breadwinner (as was the social norm back then) these women were also supposed to remain at home with their children. The assumption was that the monthly welfare payment would provide another chance for these families to assimilate to 'proper' gender roles about women not working outside the home.

Yet, when those programs began intergrating in the 1960's, the nation subsequently began hearing about the alleged flaws of the 'welfare queen'. Now, women who wanted to stay at home with their children were reduced to parasites. Welfare reform attempts were not new (Nixon attempted them in the early 1970's) but the bipartisan support for 'ending welfare as we know it' was unprecedented.

The 'welfare reform' charge became so compelling that even 'new' Democrat Bill Clinton signed the 1996 overall, despite himself having grown up in poverty --- and thus being able to personally understand the reasons why women would need to use public assistance.

Because the actual payment levels had not kept up with minimum cost of living state estimates by the 1990's, it was actually impossible to become rich off of the monthly welfare check. Despite these compelling statistics, the government recognized that keeping other people in a frenzy about 'waste' in this most conservative of industrialized nations offered more political rewards.
