Telling the facts

It's good to see when someone has the guts to tell a story that is hidden. The US Military has been far too guilty for far too long. As of late, they've gotten much much worse. They're anti-civilian like never before, and it's alarming. Telling the the real story can help to encourage others to join the bandwagon against the heinous scheme.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it was long, and drawn out. Although there were many facts that were displayed, it became repetitive and boring at times, kind of overdone.

In Authentic New Orleans, Kevin Fox Gotham explains how New Orleans became a tourist town, a spectacular locale known as much for its excesses as for its quirky Southern charm.

Gotham begins in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina amid the whirlwind of speculation about the rebuilding of the city and the dread of outsiders wiping New Orleans clean of the grit that made it great. He continues with the origins of Carnival and the Mardi Gras celebration in the nineteenth century, showing how, through careful planning and promotion, the city constructed itself as a major tourist attraction. By examining various image-building campaigns and promotional strategies to disseminate a palatable image of New Orleans on a national scale Gotham ultimately establishes New Orleans as one of the originators of the mass tourism industry—which linked leisure to travel, promoted international expositions, and developed the concept of pleasure travel.

Gotham shows how New Orleans was able to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, especially through the transformation of Mardi Gras into a national, even international, event. All the while Gotham is concerned with showing the difference between tourism from above and tourism from below—that is, how New Orleans’ distinctiveness is both maximized, some might say exploited, to serve the global economy of tourism as well as how local groups and individuals use tourism to preserve and anchor longstanding communal traditions.

Such discussions have generally remained within the boundaries of the U.S. Constitution and its American context, but consideration of free speech in other industrial democracies can offer valuable insights into the relationship between free speech and democracy on a larger and more global scale, thereby shedding new light on some unexamined (and untested) assumptions that underlie U.S. free speech doctrine.

Ronald J. Krotoszynski, Jr., compares the First Amendment with free speech law in Japan, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom—countries that are all considered modern democracies but have radically different understandings of what constitutes free speech. Challenging the popular—and largely American—assertion that free speech is inherently necessary for democracy to thrive, Krotoszynski contends that it is very difficult to speak of free speech in universalist terms when the concept is examined from a framework of comparative law that takes cultural difference into full account.

Well-written, engaging, very useful

I use this book in a course I teach on freedom of speech and have found it both authoritative and accessible. Great for giving Americans a sense of perspective on our own laws and political culture, particularly in challenging assumptions about whether and how speech should be regulated to promote democracy.

Great insights for raising children

I am a father of a daughter and soon, of a son. This book is an excellent analysis of the challenges my wife and I face when raising our children to be compassionate, emotionally intelligent, good friends, and critical thinkers. The book is written in an accessible way and the author takes the time to explain the different sociological theories and terms she uses.

Great sociology, and useful for parents, too!

I've been looking for this book since I had to buy clothes for my newborn, and we didn't know whether we were having a boy or a girl. The persistent enforcement of gender norms starts in the second trimester, even for those determined to resist it. My son is now almost two and goes around saying that he is a boy. I know he doesn't know what that means (okay, that could be a basic fact of biology or deep epistemology), but he knows the world is sorted into boys and girls. This book is wonderful as both sociological analysis and assistance for parents trying to avoid the "Traps"

An incredible and much-needed book

If you are at all interested in gender, this book is the one for you. It's the one for everyone, in fact -- it dispenses with the notion that gender performativity is strictly or even, perhaps, at all biological, putting gender in the spotlight of sociological study to reveal its true reproduction and the problems in the state of such reproduction today.

She is particularly sensitive to the idea of intersectionality. Her study includes consideration of the sexuality, race, and class positionality and of the parents being interviewed. She incorporates current theory surrounding gender and sexuality, heteronormativity and hegemonic masculinity playing pronounced roles in her conclusions.

The documentation on which her analyses rest is particularly striking. The bibliography reads like a buffet of gender studies academia, though the book is far from inaccessible.

The quotes included from parents can make you sigh, throw up your hands, or laugh with relief. It all really gives you an idea of the state of gender in the U.S. and how it might be changed, challenged, or perpetuated.

All that said, I couldn't exactly finish it by the time I got to the conclusion. Kane is a sociologist and a scholar first and foremost. The writing can sometimes come off as dry, being that it's a quantitative study, rather than an editorial book. But the slow parts are totally worth it.

Edit: reading this about a year later, I realize how rude I came off with my initial way of writing this review. I can only hope Professor Kane didn't read it in that state.
