The Code of Hammurabi, unlike the rule of the Pharaohs, constrained government by the rule of law. The law of the United States, beginning with the Constitution, accepts that precept, that government must be limited in order to prevent an accumulation of power that destroys individual liberty, undermines the ability of the collective to thrive, and abolishes the trust necessary for self-government in a civil society. "The United States and Torture," edited by Marjorie Cohn, contains fifteen essays, to remind us that our own government is currently unconstrained, and will remain unconstrained until the officials responsible for authorizing and implementing torture, not "enhanced interrogation techniques," but torture, are brought to justice in our own country.

We have heard a lot about torture, but what makes this book unique is that it begins with the personal and then like an Aristotelian debate, the essays drawn from history, law, psychology, philosophy, and ethics argue against torture to create a full condemnation and call for its abolition. After reading this book, we cannot ignore that as a people we must restrain the power of government, our own government, and demand accountability.

An Essential Corrective for U.S. Policy

This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to help correct the recent U.S. embrace of torture. Government policy and popular attitudes have dangerously evolved in the direction of accepting the unacceptable. Ms. Cohn's excellent compilation of essays, written from a wide array of individual perspectives, highlights the need for reform. It presents a comprehensive critique that will be especially useful to policymakers, scholars, journalists and above all, citizens.

About the Author

Steven Lubet is the Williams Memorial Professor of Law at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He is the author of a dozen books, including Nothing but the Truth: Why Lawyers Don't, Can't, and Shouldn't Have to Tell the Whole Truth (NYU Press) and over 100 articles. He also writes an award-winning column for the American Lawyer magazine. His commentaries have been head on National Public Radios Morning Edition, and his op-ed columns have appeared in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and other major national newspapers.

Terry Lindvall and Andrew Quicke highlight key characters, studios, and influential films of the movement from 1930 to 1986—such as the Billy Graham Association, with its major WorldWide Pictures productions of films like The Hiding Place, Ken Curtis’ Gateway Films, the apocalyptic “end-time” films by Mark IV (e.g. Thief in the Night), and the instructional video-films of Dobson’s Focus on the Family--assessing the extent to which the church’s commitment to filmmaking accelerated its missions and demonstrating that its filmic endeavors had the unintended consequence of contributing to the secularization of liberal denominations.

About the Author

Terry Lindvall is C. S. Lewis Chair of Communication and Christian Thought at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia. Previously he taught at Duke University's Divinity School and was the Walter Mason Fellow of Religious Studies at The College of William and Mary. He is the former president of Regent University, where he was professor of film and communication and the arts and held the Distinguished Chair of Visual Communication. He is the author of Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C.S. Lewis; The Mother of All Laughter: Sarah and the Genesis of Comedy; and The Silents of God: Selected Issues and Documents in Silent American Film and Religion, 1908-1926, among other works.

Andrew Quicke is Professor in the Communication and the Arts Department at Regent University and the author of several books, most recently (with Andrew Laszlo) Every Frame a Rembrandt: The Art and Practice of Cinematography.

Use of Film by, for, and/or about Christians

Professors Lindval and Quicke are learned scholars in this field. This is a very helpful history of Christianity in the film industry, and, specifically, films made by, for, and/or about Christians, including Christian evangelism and Christian propaganda. A good tool for studying the mostly failed Christian use of film as a tool of evangelism as well as Christian-managed and Christian-subject-oriented film companies.
