General and superficial

For the lay-person with no familiarity with the Juvenile Justice System, JJ may have some value. It is a very general overview of how the juvenile courts operate with a superficial analysis of the "transfer" issue (deciding whether certain juveniles should be prosecuted in the juvenile court or in the criminal court). The author is a sociologist and it's pretty clear that he has a limited grasp of the law and of the legal system. As a result, some of his conclusions are deeply flawed and/or misrepresentative of how the process works.

Sadly, this book is of no value to anyone with any experience in the Juvenile Justice System. For everyone else, however, the early chapters might serve as a useful primer as to how the system is structured and its historical roots.

Excellent Read

I needed this book for class and at first I thought it would be boring, but it is turning out to be very interesting. The differences between juvenile and criminal court is significant, but this is as it should be since you are dealing with adolescents. However the author does provide a different outlook on how you should treat juveniles who commit more serious crimes and are they truly culpable in their actions. Should we accept the fact that they are not mature enough to understand the court system and what could happen to them. A very interesting topic indeed.

Very Insightful Study of a Major Issue

"Judging Juveniles" is an incredibly well-researched and well-written study of how the justice sytem deals with (or doesn't deal adequately with) adolescents. It thoroughly reviews the issue from a variety of perspectives with the seriousness and thoughtfulness it deserves. What makes this book really great, at least to this non-academic type, is that it is very readable. It has many anecdotes and conversations lifted out of courtrooms that make the subject really come alive.

If you are at all interested in this topic, I highly recommend this book.

Until recently, immigration scholars have left out the experiences of gays and lesbians. In fact, the topic of sexuality has only recently been addressed in the literature on immigration. The Sexuality of Migration makes significant connections among sexuality, state institutions, and global economic relations. Cantú; situates his analysis within the history of Mexican immigration and offers a broad understanding of diverse migratory experiences ranging from recent gay asylum seekers to an assessment of gay tourism in Mexico. Cantú uses a variety of methods including archival research, interviews, and ethnographic research to explore the range of experiences of Mexican men who have sex with men and the political economy of sexuality and immigration. His primary research site is the greater Los Angeles area, where he interviewed many immigrant men and participated in organizations and community activities alongside his informants.

About the Author

The day before Augusto Pinochet was arrested, HUGH O'SHAUGHNESSY wrote an article entitled "Murderer Among Us" in the Guardian, calling for Pinochet's arrest. An award-winning journalist and broadcaster who has covered Latin America for nearly four decades, O'Shaughnessy is the author of numerous books and has been a regular correspondent for The Economist and The Financial Times, among others. A professional acquaintance of Salvador Allende, he was in Santiago on the day of Pinochet's coup d'etat in 1973.

This Bookk Is The Summarized Recent History of Chile

Through this book, every one with no prior knowledge on the recent political history of Chile, may become informed about what happened in that South American country in the last 30 years. In summarizing the history of Pinochet's raise, O'Shaughnessy masterly informs the reader not just about how a rather mediocre army officer became the icon of the Latin American dictator, but also what the Chilean society itself was before the putsch of 1973, and how it changed through the years by means of terror and torture. The book also throws light about something often silenced, even in today's semidemocratic Chile: the involvement of top rank officers in drug smuggling. In Chile, where historians wait for the time to give the "needed historic perspective" there is not such a book that in just 208 pages summarizes such a big amount of data. I think the chilean young people would be thankfully of the printer that dares to publish the spanish translation of this book, for it will give them an understanding of the divisions that still hurt this country.

This book begins well enough in the description of Augusto Pinochet. The first two chapters describe his early family life along with his reluctant decision to join the junta plotting the overthrow of the Allende government. The last two chapters then go into unproven killing, torture, and drug and weapons trafficing. The author tries to give us a picture of a dictator that knew everything going on in Chile. I am not sure that is the case. I do know this dictatorship in the process of overthrowing the legal Marxist government killed 3,000-4,000 people. That is a fact. I am sure torture and killings were part of the plan to stay in power. I am unsure whether they were systemic, as they are in Castro's Cuba.

I don't believe this is a balanced view on Pinochet's Chile. I believe there is much truth in this book, but also stories that don't pass the muster of honest reporting.

The true story of the chilean dictator and his regime

this is an excellent book to understand the nature of the act commited in Chile by Augusto Pinochet. Althought today many of his supporters try to deny the horror of Pinochet's regime the truth about the atrocities commited by the so call "chilean Libertator" are evident on this book. Pinochet's crimes include genocide,murder,Terrorism, torture, kidnaping and assasination on chilean territory and abroad.The victims of his crimes were chilean citizens and foreigners (including US citizens). This book gives an account of this dictator life and acts in a very organized way from his childhood to his arrest on London during 1998 (as an international criminal).

One of the most visible results is the exoneration of inmates who were wrongly convicted and incarcerated, many of them sentenced to death for crimes they did not commit. In answer, some states have created “innocence commissions” to establish policies and provide legal assistance to the improperly imprisoned.

The Innocence Commission describes the creation and first years of the Innocence Commission for Virginia (ICVA), the second innocence commission in the nation and the first to conduct a systematic inquiry into all cases of wrongful conviction. Written by Jon B. Gould, the Chair of the ICVA, who is a professor of justice studies and an attorney, the author focuses on twelve wrongful conviction cases to show how and why wrongful convictions occur, what steps legal and state advocates took to investigate the convictions, how these prisoners were ultimately freed, and what lessons can be learned from their experiences.

Gould recounts how a small band of attorneys and other advocates — in Virginia and around the country — have fought wrongful convictions in court, advanced the subject of wrongful convictions in the media, and sought to remedy the issue of wrongful convictions in the political arena. He makes a strong case for the need for Innocence Commissions in every state, showing that not only do Innocence Commissions help to identify weaknesses in the criminal justice system and offer workable improvements, but also protect society by helping to ensure that actual perpetrators are expeditiously identified, arrested, and brought to trial. Everyone has an interest in preventing wrongful convictions, from police officers and prosecutors, who seek the latest and best investigative techniques, to taxpayers, who want an efficient criminal justice system, to suspects who are erroneously pursued and sometimes convicted.

About the Author

Jon B. Gould is Associate Professor in the Department of Administration of Justice at George Mason University, where he also teaches in the School of Law. He is a former U.S. Supreme Court Fellow and is the chair of the Innocence Commission for Virginia, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization helping prevent wrongful convictions in Virginia. He is the author of Speak No Evil: The Triumph of Hate Speech Regulation.

Good Introduction/Guide to Gothic Literature

So, I used this book when writing a large paper on Gothic literature in one of my college courses and it was extremely helpful.

Unfortunately, I had a difficult time finding books on the Gothic to help me with my research on my paper, so I took a chance on this book and I'm really glad I did! It is a fantastic guidebook to Gothic literature and it outlines a lot of the conventions used in Gothic Literature, popular authors, and popular novels in Gothic Literature.

So, if you're looking for a nifty book that outlines the basics of Gothic literature, I would definitely recommend this. It's a good start and quick reference for any research into this genre.
