Selling Sex Overseas: Chinese Women and the Realities of Prostitution and Global Sex Trafficking, by Ko-lin Chin, James O. Finckenauer

2013 Outstanding Book Award Winner from the Division of International Criminology, American Society of Criminology  Every year, thousands of Chinese women travel to Asia and the United States in order to engage in commercial sex work. In Selling Sex Overseas, Ko-lin Chin and James Finckenauer challenge the current sex trafficking paradigm that considers all sex workers as victims, or sexual slaves, and as unwilling participants in the world of commercial sex. Bringing to life an on-the-ground portrait of this usually hidden world, Chin and Finckenauer provide a detailed look at all of its participants: sex workers, pimps, agents, mommies, escort agency owners, brothel owners, and drivers. Ultimately, they probe the social, economic, and political organization of prostitution and sex trafficking, contradicting many of the ‘moral crusaders’ of the human trafficking world.

Review
“In recent times some scholars have begun to question some commonly held beliefs on the relation between sex trafficking and prostitution.  Along this path of inquiry, Selling Sex Overseas: Chinese Women and the Realities of Prostitution and Global Sex Trafficking is a meaningful and interesting contribution, which challenges the conventional wisdom about sex trafficking that guides national and international regulatory frameworks. […] The book will certainly be of interest to readers of this Journal.  It is well written and suitable to both an experienced and non-specialist audience.  It should be valuable not only to scholars in the fields of criminology, sociology, and gender studies, but also to all those interested in the complex relation between sex trafficking and prostitution such as policy-makers and social activists.” -Trends in Organized Crime

“This fascinating book takes you inside the trafficking of Asian women. . . .explaining how the system works —who are the traffickers, where does their money go and how corruption allows this business to persist. A unique work that will be valuable to scholars, policy-makers and all those trying to understand the complexity of trafficking in a part of the world where the problem is so pervasive.” -Louise Shelley, author of Human Trafficking: A Global Perspective

"Selling Sex Overseas is an important and timely book. It should prompt scholars, policymakers and advocates to reexamine previously held assumptions about sex trafficking and prostitution. Chin and Finckenauer demonstrate that researchers can reach key actors in the sex industry and build the rapport necessary to learn about their experiences....Selling Sex Overseas is an excellent read. It should provoke important conversations about both the nature of the transnational commercial sex industry and the problem of trafficking persons for sex."-Amy Farrell,Rutgers: Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books

"This kind of book can appeal to both abolitionists who write about human trafficking and to sex-positive feminists who provide empirical weight to women's agency and their choice to engage in sexual commerce."-Choice

“A groundbreaking and riveting book, providing a fascinating picture of Asian sex markets. The authors mine a mountain of field data on the experiences of Chinese women who migrate to cities in Asia and beyond in search of work in the sex industry. Sociologically rich and highly policy relevant, the book offers a unique window into the complex and variegated nature of both transnational migration and sexual commerce.”-Ronald Weitzer, author of Legalizing Prostitution: From Illicit Vice to Lawful Business

“Impressive in its scope, Selling Sex Overseas is sure to challenge conventional wisdom about sex trafficking. The authors’ call for—and execution of—comprehensive empirical research makes it a significant contribution to the growing body of work seeking to improve our understanding of the transnational organization of commercial sex and to confront the often harmful assumptions about the nature and extent of sexual slavery that guide national and international policy.”-Jody Miller, author of Getting Played: African American Girls, Urban Inequality, and Gendered Violence

"[The authors'] work thus has implications for national and international public policies. I highly recommend this book for scholars in fields of sociology, gender studies, and area studies."-Shu-Ju Ada Cheng,Associate Professor in Sociology, DePaul University

A must read
By Stephen Brown
This is an important and revealing study about sex workers in and from China. Anyone interested in the issues surrounding sex trafficking should read this. It debunks some theories while illuminating others. The candid interviews with sex workers themselves is riveting and heart-wrenching. Their stories often contradict common beliefs and offer insights into the sex trade here and abroad.

Prostitution Policy: Revolutionizing Practice through a Gendered Perspective, by Lenore Kuo

While widely acknowledged as the world's oldest profession, and often glamorized or demonized in the media, prostitution is a critical part of American culture and its economy, as well as a social problem in need of an updated public policy.

In Prostitution Policy, Lenore Kuo combines feminist social research and legal studies to tackle issues raised by heterosexual prostitution in the U.S. Through the lens of feminist theory, Kuo examines the milieu of prostitutes and the role of prostitution in contemporary society, and how the interplay of those two works itself out in practice.

Moving beyond theoretical analysis of prostitution, Prostitution Policy turns to the complicated problem of formulating a reasonable legal policy that minimizes harm. Kuo discusss criminalization, legalization, and decriminalization as possible approaches, ultimately arguing for a unique form of decriminalization including detailed legal oversight and mandatory social services.

Review

“Kuo’s inclusion of international data and diverse prostitutes’ voices is distinctly valuable and her policy recommendations most thought-provoking. This book is an important contribution to the feminist dialogue on prostitution policy. It permits us to move beyond the standard oppression versus choice arguments to other, less polarized perspectives on prostitution.”
-Rosemarie Tong,University of North Carolina, Charlotte

“An interesting and enlightening read on one of today’s hottest topics.”

-Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare

“Kuo presents a carefully argued set of proposals for a feminist public policy on adult heterosexual prostitution. Kuo believes that the ultimate aim of feminist policy should not be to abolish adult heterosexual prostitution but rather radically to transform it. She therefore recommends not only legal solutions but also many extra-legal governmental supports for sex workers. Kuo’s uniquely comprehensive and systematic proposals provide an indispensable standard for all future discussions of adult heterosexual prostitution policy.”
-Alison M. Jaggar,University of Colorado, Boulder

“Kuo is a careful, thoughtful writer. She is a fine researcher and dedicated to this project as she defines it.”
-Canadian Journal of Women and the Law

Life without Parole: America's New Death Penalty? (The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute Series on Race and Justice)From Brand: NYU Pre

Is life without parole the perfect compromise to the death penalty? Or is it as ethically fraught as capital punishment? This comprehensive, interdisciplinary anthology treats life without parole as “the new death penalty.” Editors Charles J. Ogletree, Jr. and Austin Sarat bring together original work by prominent scholars in an effort to better understand the growth of life without parole and its social, cultural, political, and legal meanings. What justifies the turn to life imprisonment? How should we understand the fact that this penalty is used disproportionately against racial minorities? What are the most promising avenues for limiting, reforming, or eliminating life without parole sentences in the United States? Contributors explore the structure of life without parole sentences and the impact they have on prisoners, where the penalty fits in modern theories of punishment, and prospects for (as well as challenges to) reform.

Review
“One frightening by-product of the American struggle over capital punishment is the proliferation of Life Without Parole as its bastard offspring.  LWOP is embraced without scrutiny by abolitionists who assume that anything is better than execution.  It is enshrined as a prosecutorial consolation prize when cases meet the technical standards for 'capital' murder but defendants lack blameworthiness.  The unqualified condemnation of LWOP comes from a crazy displacement of distrust that puts extra suffering on offenders because citizens don’t trust those who govern.  Fighting capital punishment must be a central concern in the United States.  But threats to human rights rarely develop one at a time, so injustice must be fought on multiple fields of engagement.  Ogletree, Sarat, and their distinguished contributors perform an important public service by taking a sustained look at yet another dangerous punitive excess.”-Franklin Zimring,William G. Simon Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley

"The authors arguments are valid and strong."-Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Book Review

"An essential title for students of criminal justice."-Library Journal

"An essential title for students of criminal justice."-Frances Sandiford,Library Journal

"A timely and engaging wake-up call, Life Without Parole is the first sustained attempt to understand the meaning of the newest weapon in the American punitive armory. This provocative collection, clear-sighted in its prophetic potential, questions whether LWOP is a humane alternative to the death penalty or a fate worse than death. A must-read for all who want to understand the dark underside of twenty-first century democracy in a country where ever more citizens are condemned to a vast penal complex that redefines death as it expands criminality."-Colin Dayan, author of The Law is a White Dog

"Life Without Parole raises fundamental concerns both about the justice and the wisdom of this uniquely American phenomenon. It also poses uncomfortable questions for the reform community about the complex intersection between the death penalty and life without parole. If we hope to produce a justice system premised on human rights, we will have to find ways to respond to these challenges. Life Without Parole does a masterful job of pointing us in the right direction to begin that process."-Marc Mauer,Executive Director, The Sentencing Project

Hard to put down
By Christine Thomas
This book is a page turner and incredibly hard to put down. A great reference book on revenge sentencing in the United States and how justifying the use of LWOP sentencing to end the death penalty has actually normed the use of this death by prison sentence. A sentence by which you will leave prison no less dead. Even though it is hard to put down, at times it was so painful to read, you may have regrets at knowing this much information. The content may haunt you into joining with prison reformers unless you find you have a heart/mind of stone.

Breaks New Ground
By Elizabeth Linehan
I read this book (from a university library) before I bought it. It breaks new ground in the debate about criminal sentencing, and why the United States is more harsh in its punishments than Europe. I decided I needed a copy of my own that I could mark up with marginal notes and have for ready reference.

Tropics of Desire: Interventions from Queer Latino America (Sexual Cultures), by Jose A. Quiroga

From its sweaty beats to the pulsating music on the streets, Latin/o America is perceived in the United States as the land of heat, the toy store for Western sex. It is the territory of magical fantasy and of revolutionary threat, where topography is the travel guide of desire, directing imperial voyeurs to the exhibition of the flesh.

Jose Quiroga flips the stereotype upside down: he shows how Latin/o American lesbians and gay men have consistently eschewed notions of sexual identity for a politics of intervention. In Tropics of Desire, Quiroga reads hesitant Mexican poets as sex-positive voices, he questions how outing and identity politics can fall prey to the manipulations of the state, and explores how invisibility has been used as a tactical tool in opposition to the universal imperative to come out.

Drawing on diverse cultural examples such as the performance of bolero and salsa, film, literature, and correspondence, and influenced by masters like Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin and a rich tradition of Latin American stylists, Quiroga argues for a politics that denies biological determinism and cannibalizes cultural stereotypes for the sake of political action.

Review

"A brilliant and provocative book, admirably observant of historical detail and subtly attentive to cultural nuance. Quiroga shies away from easy generalizations and painstakingly, lovingly, reflects on a variety of Latin American and Latino queer manifestations, from literature to performance. This luminous critical exercise is matched by the author's no less dazzling prose. This book not only furthers queer studies in Latin America, it is, in itself, a beautiful performance that should not be missed."

-Sylvia Molloy,Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities, New York University

"I've been waiting for this book, savoring its previews. Reading Quiroga's agile and powerful prose is itself one of the adventures offered here. His balancing act between deadly serious issues of identity and control and the fun and pride of maneuvering accentuates these spectacular accounts of lesbian and gay creativity in the dense social contexts of Latino lives."

-Doris Sommer,Professor of Latin American Literature, Harvard University

"A vivid analysis of how many Latin Americans have crafted alternative modes of understanding sexuality."

-Hispanic American Historical Review

"Incisive and witty, Quiroga's survey of the constructions of homosexuality in Latin America and the Latino U.S. includes brilliant readings of major literary figures—Villaurrutia, Pinera, Cabrera—as well as pop culture icons, from La Lupe to Ricky Martin."

-Daniel Balderston,Chair of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Iowa

Libro chevere on gay Latino culture!
By A Customer
Too many gay Latin books focus on Spain, basically (though unintentionally) reinforcing the idea that homosexuality is a European phenomenon. To add salt to the wound, they focus upon ancient, obtuse Spanish writings rather than the cool cultural products being made by living gay Latinos. This book avoids that trap. Though there is a brief, cursory mention of Garcia Lorca, all the works analyzed here are about Latin Americans and US Latinos. Quiroga looks at cultural products from these two groups and provides commentary that combines the best thought of queer studies thinkers (Sedgwick, Halperin) with Latino academics (Oboler, Fusco). This book doesn't get bogged down in separating Latin Americans from US Latinos or privileging one group over the other. The book is male-focused, but it is conscious of that and it does include a chapter on lesbian writer Lydia Cabrera. This book is wonderful like Jose Munoz' "Disidentifications" and Manrique's "Eminent Maricones," instead of being boring and cluttered like Molloy's anthology or "?Entiendes?" It's not perfect. Quiroga uses much hyperacademic babble: many sentences I read twice or thrice and they never made sense. He, like all current writers, problematizes the term "gay" but is totally uncritical of this concept "queer." Chapter introductions are long and have nothing to do with the main topics. I don't agree with some of what he said (Example: Gay Latino Carlos dolls are not an ounce as offensive as Ricky "I love Geore W. Bush" Martin.) Still, this book gets progressively better and I may even suggest that people read the last chapters first. This book is a must-have for gay Latino readers.

Benevolent Repression: Social Control and the American Reformatory-Prison Movement, by Alexander W. Pisciotta

The opening, in 1876, of the Elmira Reformatory marked the birth of the American adult reformatory movement and the introduction of a new approach to crime and the treatment of criminals. Hailed as a reform panacea and the humane solution to America's ongoing crisis of crime and social disorder, Elmira sparked an ideological revolution. Repression and punishment were supposedly out. Academic and vocational education, military drill, indeterminate sentencing and parole—"benevolent reform"—were now considered instrumental to instilling in prisoners a respect for God, law, and capitalism.

Not so, says Al Pisciotta, in this highly original, startling, and revealing work. Drawing upon previously unexamined sources from over a half-dozen states and a decade of research, Pisciotta explodes the myth that Elmira and other institutions of "the new penology" represented a significant advance in the treatment of criminals and youthful offenders.

The much-touted programs failed to achieve their goals; instead, prisoners, under Superintendent Zebulon Brockway, considered the Father of American Corrections, were whipped with rubber hoses and two-foot leather straps, restricted to bread and water in dark dungeons during months of solitary confinement, and brutally subjected to a wide range of other draconian psychological and physical abuses intended to pound them into submission. Escapes, riots, violence, drugs, suicide, arson, and rape were the order of the day in these prisons, hardly conducive to the transformation of "dangerous criminal classes into Christian gentleman," as was claimed. Reflecting the racism and sexism in the social order in general, the new penology also legitimized the repression of the lower classes.

Highlighting the disparity between promise and practice in America's prisons, Pisciotta draws on seven inmate case histories to illustrate convincingly that the "March of Progress" was nothing more than a reversion to the ways of old. In short, the adult reformatory movement promised benevolent reform but delivered benevolent repression—a pattern that continues to this day.

A vital contribution to the history of crime, corrections, and criminal justice, this book will also have a major impact on our thinking about contemporary corrections and issues surrounding crime, punishment, and social control.

Review

"Benevolent Repression fills a maor gap in our histories of U.S. prisons—disregard for the network of men's reformatories. It seems incredible that, until now, historians neglected such a large and influential branch of the prison system. Pisciotta more than makes up for the lapse, however, with this informative and valuable study."

-Nicole Rafter, author of Partial Justice: Women, Prisons and Social Control

"Provocative and insightful. . . . With the publication of this excellent work, Pisciotta has established himself as one of the most important of the prison historians to whom we should listen in the future."

-The Criminologist

"Pisciotta's study is a major contribution to the history of crime and punishment in America. His extensive research on the origins and development of reformatories challenges the accepted interpretation that these institutions had a reformative influence on the corrections system. This work sets the stage for a revised understanding of the institutionalization movement in uvenile corrections."

-John A. Conley,Professor and Chair of Criminal Justice, State University College at Buffalo

Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah: New Insights and Scholarship (Jewish Studies in the Twenty-First Century)From NYU Press

Over the past generation, scholars have devoted increasing attention to the diverse forms that Jewish mysticism has taken both in the past and today: what was once called “nonsense” by Jewish scholars has generated important research and attention both within the academy and beyond, as demonstrated by the popular fascination with figures such as Madonna and Demi Moore and the growing interest in spirituality.
In Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah, leading experts introduce the history of this scholarship as well as the most recent insights and debates that currently animate the field in a way that is accessible to a broad audience. From mystical outpourings in ancient Palestine to the Kabbalah Centre, and from attitudes towards gender to mystical contributions to Jewish messianic movements, this volume explores the various expressions of Jewish mysticism from antiquity to the present day in an engaging style appropriate for students and non-specialists alike.

Unbecoming Blackness: The Diaspora Cultures of Afro-Cuban America (American Literatures Initiative), by Antonio Lopez

2014 Runner-Up, MLA Prize in United States Latina and Latino and Chicana and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies In Unbecoming Blackness, Antonio López uncovers an important, otherwise unrecognized century-long archive of literature and performance that reveals Cuban America as a space of overlapping Cuban and African diasporic experiences.

López shows how Afro-Cuban writers and performers in the U.S. align Cuban black and mulatto identities, often subsumed in the mixed-race and postracial Cuban national imaginaries, with the material and symbolic blackness of African Americans and other Afro-Latinas/os. In the works of Alberto O’Farrill, Eusebia Cosme, Rómulo Lachatañeré, and others, Afro-Cubanness articulates the African diasporic experience in ways that deprive negro and mulato configurations of an exclusive link with Cuban nationalism. Instead, what is invoked is an “unbecoming” relationship between Afro-Cubans in the U.S and their domestic black counterparts. The transformations in Cuban racial identity across the hemisphere, represented powerfully in the literary and performance cultures of Afro-Cubans in the U.S., provide the fullest account of a transnational Cuba, one in which the Cuban American emerges as Afro-Cuban-American, and the Latino as Afro-Latino.

"Unbecoming Blackness is a stunning tour de force: it serves as a call for those critically engaged in the African diaspora work with a focus on Latin America to return to the archive and to study the wealth of information that remains there, unnoticed....Lopez forces readers to rethink notions of blackness so that these ideas are specific to place, yet also to consider the fluidity of these discourses in relation to physical movement and their reestablishment in new locations.  His study also demands fluent interdisciplinarity: Lopez analyzes texts, photographs, sound recordings, and film, all of which challenge readers to expand beyond their comfort zone as scholars.  This text is an extraordinary addition to Cuban studies, Cuban American studies, US Latina/o and Latin American studies, American studies, African American studies, and African diasporic studies."-Vanessa K. Valdes,MELUS: The Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States

“Unbecoming Blackness promises to make a transformative impact on Cuban American Literary Studies; it will certainly put López on the map as one of the field’s most important and groundbreaking scholars.”-Ricardo Ortiz, author of Cultural Erotics in Cuban America
