Race Woman: The Lives of Shirley Graham Du Bois, by Gerald Horne

One of the most intriguing activists and artists of the twentieth century, Shirley Graham Du Bois also remains one of the least studied and understood. In Race Woman, Gerald Horne draws a revealing portrait of this controvertial figure who championed the civil rights movement in America, the liberation struggles in Africa and the socialist struggles in Maoist China. Through careful analysis and use of personal correspondence, interviews, and previously unexamined documents, Horne explores her work as a Harlem Renaissance playwright, biographer, composer, teacher, novelist, Left political activist, advisor and inspiration, who was a powerful historical actor.

From Publishers Weekly
Largely remembered as the widow of W.E.B. Du Bois, Shirley Graham Du Bois (1896-1977) was much more than a faithful caretaker and companion to her legendary husband. As Horne (Fire This Time: The Watts Uprising and the 1960s) reveals in this impressive biography, she was a restless, multifaceted woman. Reared in a strict Calvinist home, the daughter of a minister in Indianapolis, Ind., she understood that a solid education could free her from the limited existence of most women in her time. A youthful excursion into marriage ended in divorce, but not before Graham Du Bois became the mother of two sons. Horne, a Fulbright scholar and professor of history at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, does not judge Graham Du Bois's tortured decision to leave her boys with her parents so that she could conquer the world. After moving to Paris during the wild 1920s, she returned to the U.S. to produce her hit opera, Tom-Tom, then submerged herself in the heady academic atmosphere of Oberlin University. Horne also diligently evokes her political commitment to the civil rights movement, women's rights and anti-colonial struggles in Africa and Asia. Graham Du Bois wanted to control the flow of her life, but all of that changed when she met W.E.B. Du Bois, whom she married in his declining years, while he was under attack from McCarthy's Red hunters. Horne's observations on the couple's final days in Africa in 1963 and Graham Du Bois's subsequent globe trotting, especially her infatuation with Maoist China, are eloquent and rich with telling anecdotes about such figures as Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell, Nasser, Nkrumah and Zhou Enlai. Drawing on Graham Du Bois's personal papers and extensive interviews with family and friends, Horne's book may not completely unravel the enigma of Shirley Graham Du Bois, but it gets closer to her heart and soul than any previous attempt. From Library Journal
The lives of Shirley Graham Du Bois, dame extraordinaire, began with an early commitment to uplift her race. Her life roles included that of struggling single parent, musician, playwright, and novelist; successful biographer, activist, and adviser to Ghanaian nationalist leader Kwarme Nkrumah; wife of W.E.B. Du Bois; and, at various times, citizen of the United States, Ghana, and Tanzania. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly for racial uplift, desegregation in the United States, and African decolonization. Politically, she espoused the ideologies of Soviet communism, Chinese socialism, and leftist nationalism. Relying on extensive research, Horne (Fire This Time: The Watts Uprising and the 1960s) shows how Graham Du Bois handledDsuccessfully or unsuccessfullyDthe conflicts she confronted as a black woman in male-dominated arenas and her personal struggle to resolve her parenting responsibilities with her artistic and political goals. Readers will anxiously anticipate each chapter and will be grateful that Graham Du Bois's amazing and often controversial life has finally been documented. This is a Really Good Book
By D. Johnson
I consider myself to be a W.E.B. Dubois disciple, really. Imagine how surprised I was to learn about the life and legacy of Shirley Graham Dubois, the wife of W.E.B. Dubois. This women was phenomenal!!!! The author brings her history and her voice alive in this well-researched biography. The book started out slow, and I was afraid that it would not be an enjoyable read. It soon picked up, however, and I could not put it down. The writer uses the voice of Ms. Graham - Dubois to tell her story whenever possible. He also has feminist sensibilities in terms of his analysis, which I appreciate a great deal. As such, Horne was able to present a picture of Shirley Graham Dubois which pulled out her from behind the shadow of her famous husband, and which allowed her bountiful talents, accomplishments, and gifts to stand alone, and to reflect a legacy that was all her own. All Americans should know the story of this great woman. Horne provides us with the opportunity to do just that. A great book for Black Women's Studies scholars as well.

A Grand Illusion?: An Essay on Europe, by Tony Judt

“I am enthusiastically European; no informed person could seriously wish to return to the embattled, mutually antagonistic circle of suspicious and introverted nations that was the European continent in the quite recent past. But it is one thing to think an outcome desirable, quite another to suppose it is possible. It is my contention that a truly united Europe is sufficiently unlikely for it to be unwise and self-defeating to insist upon it. I am thus, I suppose, a Euro-pessimist.” —Tony Judt

Tony Judt's "A Grand Illusion"
By Wes
I have discovered Judt's work only in the last few years. His writing and thinking is lucid, and his analysis and ideas provocative in the good sense. His different views of many of the problems facing contemporary Europe are as important as they are unconventional.

Is Europe's future a unified one?
By Matthew Ellis
If you are an avid supporter of the European Union, this book will not be a fun read. In this polemical essay, Judt argues that the future of Europe cannot be a unified one and that the EU is ultimately doomed to failure. What is his rationale?
He writes, "The years 1945-1989 are thus coming to seem more and more like a parenthesis." Arguing that nationalism is the most powerful and influential force in Europe, Judt paints a picture of a Europe that has been historically divided. Any attempts at unity will founder because of inherent national differences and nationalist feelings.
Although Judt offers several cogent arguments, his book fails to take into account the current state of optimism in Europe and the fact that the EU has been widely accepted. After a tumultuous century of division (from the powerful pre-WWI nation-states to the Cold War's establishment of East v. West), Europe today seems eager to latch onto a system that would provide some sense of community. Judt ignores this fact. Also, Judt's argument about Germany seems to me to be illogical, and some his evidence is a real stretch.
Judt's book on Europe has some value--it offers some very provocative points about Europe--but in the end, its overly pessimistic view lacks clarity and a solid factual base.

When Boys Become Boys: Development, Relationships, and Masculinity, by Judy Y. Chu, Carol Gilligan

Based on a two-year study that followed boys from pre-kindergarten through first grade, When Boys Become Boys offers a new way of thinking about boys’ development. Through focusing on a critical moment of transition in boys’ lives, Judy Y. Chu reveals boys’ early ability to be emotionally perceptive, articulate, and responsive in their relationships, and how these “feminine” qualities become less apparent as boys learn to prove that they are boys primarily by showing that they are not girls.

Chu finds that behaviors typically viewed as “natural” for boys reflect an adaptation to cultures that require boys to be stoic, competitive, and aggressive if they are to be accepted as “real boys.” Yet even as boys begin to reap the social benefits of aligning with norms of masculine behavior, they pay a psychological and relational price for renouncing parts of their humanity.

Chu documents boys’ perceptions of the obstacles they face and the pressures they feel to conform, showing that compliance with rules of masculinity is neither automatic nor inevitable. This accessible and engaging book provides insight into ways in which adults can foster boys’ healthy resistance and help them to access a broader range of options as they seek to connect with others while remaining true to themselves.

Review
“Chu presents an engaging observational study, taking as her subjects six preschool boys, much in the tradition of Vivian Paley's Superheroes in the Doll Corner (CH, Jan '85). A foreword by Carol Gilligan, who sponsored the original research, sets the tone of this study as an investigation of the ways boys establish the social and emotional habits that allow them to navigate the world of the boy group and later the world of men. The critical focus is on how boys understand the relational world in the preschool years, and how they maintain their relational capacities while learning gender roles. The text is full of delicately observed descriptions and verbatim discussions between Chu and the boys. . . . Depth is added by inclusion of interviews with parents and by the contributions of teachers, giving some background to the children's views of gender. Helpful notes add value. This volume will be excellent supplemental classroom reading and a helpful guide for observational projects, and the style and topic extend the book's audience beyond the academy. Summing Up: Highly recommended.”-Choice

"[H]er book offers an insightful portrait of group interactions and hierarchy in boys. She convincingly makes the case that, being human, boys share with girls the capacity to relate."-Library Journal

"In this provocative and beautifully written book, Judy Chu reveals that we have been telling ourselves a false story about boys and their development. Boys, she finds, don’t start off being the emotionally disconnected stereotype that our culture projects onto them. They become those stereotypes via cultural socialization. Yet boys also resist, and maintain their humanity despite living in a culture that denies it to them. A must read for anyone interested in boys."-Niobe Way,author of Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendships and the Crisis of Connection

"Chu has produced an exceptionally accessible addition to the literature on the topic and a well-written argument that encourages us to think deeply and differently about how family and peer relationships affect young boys' gender development and performances of masculinity."-PsycCRITIQUES

"Chu possesses three rare gifts: she gets boys to open up to her and describe their lives in gorgeous detail; she listens with extraordinary compassion, and she analyzes their experiences with the meticulous care of both finely tuned head and heart.  In so doing, she gives us a single gift both rare and precious: a look inside the world of boys, wriggling between demands about performing for others, and eager to be who they really are."-Michael Kimmel, author of Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men

“To what extent are ‘masculine’ qualities innate?  This is just one of the questions that Judy Y. Chu sets out to answer in her book When Boys Become Boys, based on a two-year study in which she observed a group of six boys from pre-kindergarten to grade one (age four to six) at a US school. . . . Ultimately, When Boys Become Boys is not a critique of prevailing masculine ideals but a plea for adults to help boys resist societal pressures so that they do not feel compelled to censor, distort or misrepresent themselves in order to accommodate these externally imposed standards.”-The Psychologist

"Reading When Boys Become Boys has significantly altered my thinking about what it means to be a boy."-BookTrib.com

"Chu writes in a manner that is easy to understand and as she bases her research on relational theory, she often comes back to and describe the ways in which relationships become the basis for the boys in her study. Parents will also find this book valuable as they navigate early childhood with their child or children."-Metapsychology

The Children's Culture ReaderFrom Brand: NYU Press

Every major political and social dispute of the twentieth century has been fought on the backs of our children, from the economic reforms of the progressive era through the social readjustments of civil rights era and on to the current explosion of anxieties about everything from the national debt to the digital revolution. Far from noncombatants whom we seek to protect from the contamination posed by adult knowledge, children form the very basis on which we fight over the nature and values of our society, and over our hopes and fears for the future.

Unfortunately, our understanding of childhood and children has not kept pace with their crucial and rapidly changing roles in our culture. Pulling together a range of different thinkers who have rethought the myths of childhood innocence, The Children's Culture Reader develops a profile of children as creative and critical thinkers who shape society even as it shapes them. Representing a range of thinking from history, psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, women's studies, literature, and media studies, The Children's Culture Reader focuses on issues of parent-child relations, child labor, education, play, and especially the relationship of children to mass media and consumer culture. The contributors include Martha Wolfenstein, Philippe Aries, Jacqueline Rose, James Kincaid, Lynn Spigel, Valerie Walkerdine, Ellen Seiter, Annette Kuhn, Eve Sedgwick, Henry Giroux, and Nancy Scheper-Hughes.

Including a groundbreaking introduction by the editor and a sourcebook section which excerpts a range of material from popular magazines to child rearing guides from the past 75 years, The Children's Culture Reader will propel our understanding of children and childhood into the next century.

From Publishers Weekly
According to editor Henry Jenkins, The Children's Culture Reader "is intended both to explore what the figure of the child means to adults and to offer a more complex account of children's own cultural lives." He has compiled a selection of essays by the likes of Philippe Aries, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Henry Giroux, Martha Wolfenstein and Lynn Spiegel to analyze "how our culture defines what it means to be a child, how adult institutions impact on children's lives, and how children construct their cultural and social identities."

Review

"A terrific, captivating, and thoroughly original book."
-Oren Baruch Stier, author of "Committed to Memory: Cultural Mediations of the Holocaust"

"Brave and fruitful . . . Compels viewers to confront taboos regarding Holocaust representation and to consider the ways in which the devastation of the Holocaust might shed new light on the study of American Jewish history."
-"American Jewish Archives Journal",

"Levitt's intimate narrative shows how each of us is haunted by our own personal losses and by the grand tragedy of the Holocaust that has shaped a generation. The author demands that each of us take our own stories of loss seriously not despite the overwhelming memory of the Holocaust but in light of it."
-David Shneer, co-author of "New Jews: The End of the Jewish Diaspora"

A Classic
By A Reader
I use many chapters from the book in two of my graduate classes, "Theories of Childhood" and "Media, Production, and Child/Youth Pop Culture". The history chapters establish childhood as a cultural production particular to specific times and places while the chapters on contemporary childhood culture (with a few stinker exceptions) are smart and engaging. The book features some of the best known scholars in childhood studies. Even with its age, many of the chapters are essential readings in the field. Still, I hope Jenkins will consider doing an updated version of this classic.

A Children's Culture Reader
By A Customer
This is an interesting book, but in some chapters it tends to focus more on the historical role of the child than it addresses current social issues that are of concern in our society. Some of the contributing authors also offer highly subjective perspectives on their topics. Some chapters are very relevant and informative. All in all, a mixed experience.

Essential Papers on Narcissism (Essential Papers on Psychoanalysis)From Brand: New York University Press

Narcissism has recently been the focus of debate among professionals, in large part due to the controversies surrounding the world of Heinz Kohut and Otto Kernberg. Yet much has been written about narcissism throughout the history of psychoanalysis and this carefully selected collection brings together the essential work on narcissism.

The book first puts forth the major theoretical formulations - self-psychology, object relations, psychodynamics - and then explores diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The book offers landmark classic and contemporary contributions by authors such as Annie Reich, Heinz Kohut, Otto Kernberg, Alice Miller, Arnold Modell, and many others.

scholarly theoretical book, but the title has it right
By A Customer
This is a collection of 17 articles written by different authors at different times, from Freud on. It's certainly not pop-psychology style; this is scholarly stuff. But if you're up for some scholarly stuff, this is just what the title claims: Essential Papers on Narcissism. The variety of viewpoints makes this a good collection to give you a broad understanding of what's out there about narcissism. You'll probably like some of the articles more than others (the writing styles do vary), and probably agree with some more than others, but the bottom line is that there is worthwhile material here. I found it thought-provoking and edifying. But not a walk-in-the-park read.
The term "narcissism" (like "narcissist") seems to be used in different ways, with somewhat different meanings, by different people these days. Reading these articles will help you get a grip on what the important issues are, regardless of how you define the terms.
Heavy on theory (of course) and lingo that presupposes some background in psychodynamic concepts and terminology.

Introduction by the Masters
By Sam Vaknin
No one seems to agree what is pathological narcissism. Some theoreticians regard it as a culture-dependent theoretical construct. Others fail to sufficiently differentiate it from the Borderline or Anti-social personality disorder. Some trace its genesis to the first year or years (the formative years) of life. Yet others believe that it can form as late as early adolescence or even, as a reactive formation, in adulthood. There are those who believe that some forms of narcissism are transient and all variants of narcissism can be successfully treated. Others regard it as mental ("malignant") cancer - the side effects can be ameliorated with medication - but nothing more. You will find them all here, in this great tome of introductions to pathological narcissism by the masters. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

It's all in the book title!
By Bonitajphd
This series of "Essential Papers", is a must for any theorist, practitioner or academic in the field of psychology. It is dense, but by no means obtuse. It offers the core issues around pathological Narcissism, from the "greats" and not a watered down interpretation from a 21st century cult, who bandy the word about.
I return to it time and again, to reacquaint myself, both with the terminology and the essence of the disorder. Indeed a prevalent and most difficult "characterological" deficit to work with, but the most rewarding to fully grasp and understand. As was said by Buddha 'To know all, is to forgive all'.

Comparative Politics: Theory and Method, by B. Guy Peters

Comparative Politics provides a comprehensive, theoretical, and methodological introduction to the field of comparative politics. In the sciences, theory is tested through direct experimentation. In politics, however, social scientists cannot simply manipulate an institution or law to see what might happen. Comparisons of different political contexts are thus central to political theory. Analyzing what happens when different countries modify constitutions or party systems provides useful information about the probable consequences of such changes among diverse political orders.

The world of politics is full rich and complex factors which influence the way people vote, how policies are made, or how interest groups lobby. Written by a well-established author with an international reputation, Comparative Politics, surveys the best work in the field, examining the issues involved in an attempt to compare political systems and discussing how the methods and results of comparative politics can be improved.

This valuable survey presents a wide array of case studies to illustrate how comparative analysts devise effective methods to construct meaningful theories about political systems. All major current approaches are covered, making this essential reading for students of politics and government.

This book is very dense for the number of pages it has. We used it in my grad comparative politics class. It can be useful for someone who already knows something about comparative politics, but if you are new to comparative politics look elsewhere. Very dry, very dense

Changing Faith: The Dynamics and Consequences of Americans' Shifting Religious Identities, by Darren E. Sherkat

More than anywhere else in the Western world, religious attachments in America are quite flexible, with over 40 percent of U.S. citizens shifting their religious identification at least once in their lives. In Changing Faith, Darren E. Sherkat draws on empirical data from large-scale national studies to provide a comprehensive portrait of religious change and its consequences in the United States.  With analysis spanning across generations and ethnic groups, the volume traces the evolution of the experience of Protestantism and Catholicism in the United States, the dramatic growth of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, and the rise of non-identification, now the second most common religious affiliation in the country. Drawing on that wealth of data, it details the impact of religious commitments on broad arenas of American social life, including family and sexuality, economic well-being, political commitments, and social values.  Exploring religious change among those of European heritage as well as of Eastern and Western European immigrants, African Americans, Asians, Latin Americans, and Native Americans, Changing Faith not only provides a comprehensive and ethnically inclusive demographic overview of the juncture between religion and ethnicity within both the private and public sphere, but also brings empirical analysis back to the sociology of religion.

Review
"The great virtue of this book is that it compiles in a single place almost everything worth knowing about American religion that can be learned from the cumulative U.S. General Social Surveys (GSS), surveys that have been collected every one or two years since 1972. . . . This is a great book.  The style is clear, the coverage is comprehensive, and the analysis is insightful and sophisticated."-Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

“…a work that is highly relevant and useful for further research and application.  This book is highly recommended…”-Catholic Library World

"Sherkat's study undermines the popular claim that while fewer Americans have a formal religious identification, they nevertheless retain many of the trappings of religious belief and personal practice."-Choice

"Provides a fascinating glimpse into the changing religious landscape in the U.S., telling us who the winners and losers have been in a half century of demographic and religious change. Using the best available data, Sherkat busts the myths concerning the rise in conservative Christianity, showing that non-Christians groups and unaffiliated nonbelievers have grown faster. Rather than supporting the notion that religions operate like a marketplace, Sherkat reminds us how important ethnic ties, immigrant origins, and fertility differentials are in contemporary religious affiliation. He makes a significant contribution by showing not just how religious affiliations have changed , but why it matters in how people form families and decide upon schooling and careers. If you want to know which denominations are growing or declining and, most importantly, why, this book is for you."-Jennifer Glass,Barbara Bush Regents Professor of Liberal Arts, University of Texas - Austin

“Changing Faith is a well-written, compelling book.  By illustrating the importance of demographic factors in understanding religions in the United States today, Changing Faith is an important book with which all sociologists of religion should be familiar.”  -Sociology of Religion

“Darren Sherkat’s Changing Faith is an interesting and valuable…book. […] Changing Faith is worth reading, debating, and teaching.”-American Journal of Sociology

"Religious identification matters in the United States, shaping private and publicly-oriented behaviors. This book identifies immigration and generational change as major sources of change in religious identification, and shows why 'grand theories' do not help us to understand the religious landscape. . . . An important book which will serve as a resource for scholars and students who want an accurate, empirically-based understanding of the causes and implications of Americans' changing religious identifications."-Penny Edgell, author of Religion and Family in a Changing Society
