Voicing Chicana Feminisms: Young Women Speak Out on Sexuality and Identity (Qualitative Studies in Psychology), by Aida Hurtado

Chicana voices are missing from the psychology of women. Though “Chicana feminisms” have only recently been enumerated, a feminist perspective has long existed in Chicano communities without ever having been explicitly named. Grounded in specific aspects of Chicano culture such as the contested role of La Malinche and the complexities of Marianismo, the distinguishing feature of Chicana feminisms has been their embrace of diversity. Chicanas readily acribe to many feminisms and do not expect there to be only one.

Focusing on young women between the ages of 20 and 30, Chicanas Speak Feminisms explores the relationship between Chicana feminism and the lived experiences of Chicanas. What do they see as their day-to-day manifestation of feminist consciousness? What is the relationship between what Chicana feminists propose and their lived experiences as women and as members of other significant social groups? Including rich ethnographic testimony based on questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and shadowing, Hurtado allows the women to speak in their own terms about how they see their femininity, sexuality, gender identity, ethnic/racial identity, and ties to other feminisms and political struggles.

Review

“This remarkable work is a riveting reminder that ideas can and do make a difference in the social world. As Hurtado’s extensive interviews reveal, young Chicanas have entered into transformative conversations with an older generation of theorists and activists as they give voice to Chicana feminisms in the struggles, contradictions, and pleasures of their everyday lives.”
-Angela Y. Davis, author of Women, Race, and Class

"Voicing Chicana Feminisms enriches mutliple areas of our academic world including but not limited to Chicana feminist theory, Mexican American studies, Women of Color scholarship, and sexuality research. The book is divided in three sections, each one offers rich, textured, and nuanced narratives exposing key aspects of these women's lives. Voicing Chicana Feminism is the book I fantasized about reading in my feminist theory class as a graduate student. This important academic contribution is beautifully written with elegant clarity and heartfelt passion. I look forward to using it with both my undergraduate and graduate students—Chicana, Xicana, Latina, Hispanic, Mexican American, Mexicana, Tejana, or whatever identity they may choose to embrace.”-Sexualities

“Hurtado aptly narrates how ‘our intellectual daughters’ negotiate personal, social, and sexual identities, face challenges, and triumph over adversities in bedrooms, kitchens, classrooms, work places, and various communities. In their struggles to claim sus lenguas, historias, and independence, these courageous mujeres raise consciousness, providing new conocimientos. Hurtado constructs a compelling tapestry of political activism, resistance, and self-empowerment, contributing richly to and inspiriting Raza studies.”
-Gloria E. Anzaldúa,author of Borderlands/la Frontera: the New Mestiza

“A wonderful synthesis of Chicana feminism. . . . Hurtado’s interviews transform theory into lived experience, showing us that a Chicana feminist consciousness and movement arises precisely out of women's everyday lives. She confirms beyond any doubt that Chicanas have shaped their own personal and collective history in complex ways. Her respondents' voices are clear, honest, and very brave.”
-Bettina Aptheker, author of Tapestries of Life: Women's Work, Women’s Consciousness, and the Meaning of Daily Experience

Gita Govinda: Love Songs of Radha and Krishna (Clay Sanskrit Library), by Jayadeva

Jayadeva’s Gitagovínda is a lyrical account of the illicit springtime love affair of Krishna and Radha, a god and goddess manifesting on earth as a cowherd and milkmaid for the sake of relishing the sweet miseries and rapturous delights of erotic love. The narrative framing their bucolic songs was composed under royal patronage in northeastern India in the twelfth century. It was to be performed for connoisseurs of poetry and the erotic arts, for aesthetes and voluptuaries who, while sensually engaged, were at the same time devoted to Krishna as Lord of the Universe. The text at once celebrates the vicissitudes of carnal love and the transports of religious devotion, merging and reconciling those realms of emotion and experience. Erotic and religious sensibilities serve, and are served by, the pleasures of poetry. In the centuries following its composition, the courtly text became a vastly popular inspirational hymnal. Jayadeva's songs continue to be sung throughout India in fervent devotional adoration of Krishna.

"Small, elegant books, beautifully printed, sparsely annotated, and bilingual...This arrangement naturally delights students of Sanskrit, who may dispense,at least temporarily, with their dictionaries and grammar books; but you do nothave to know Sanskrit to enjoy reading these volumes." Accurate Translation of the Classic Gitagovinda Text
By Batto
The Gitagovinda is a text that explores Krishna's erotic pasttimes with the Gopis and more specifically with Radha. This 12th century, sanskrit court poem explores concepts of Viraha, Smarana, Rasa, Prema, and Bhakti centered on Krishna. The Foreword by Sudipta Kaviraj and introduction by Lee Siegel provide background information on who Jayadeva was, who the Rasikas were, the sanskrit meter and ragas, and also about the two levels on which this book can be understood-----physical pleasures that connosieurs of poetry, Rasikas, could take from this text, and also the religious implications/concepts focusing on Krishna (this is a central text in Gaudiya Vaishnavism). This book includes sanskrit transliterations which makes it useful for academic study. Overall, I would recommend this text for both first-hand academic study in a college setting (I bought this for my Hinduism college class)and for reading of classical sanskrit poetry in general. If your major reason for wanting to read this book is religious regarding Krishna or the Gaudiya Vaishnavism movement then I also recommend Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja's translation which also includes commentary on each stanza.

Best Jayadevar Ashtapadhi Translation Available
By NRLA
I think that the Lee Siegel translation is the best out there. He does an excellent job turning the translation into wonderful poetry.
The Ashtapadhis have a similar metre and rhyme as the Sanskrit does.
The edition is compact and has transliterated Sanskrit on on side of the open spread, and the English on the other.
Another big plus is that it is hardcover and extremely portable. An excellet volume.

"If your heart relishes recollections of Lord Krishna, and if you're curious about the arts of erotic love as well, Then listen to Jayadeva's eloquent poem - a pretty posey of words, sweet and melodious."

And do yourself a favor by using this translation for your "sravanam kirtanam" if you don't know Sanskrit.

If the Clay Sanskrit Library would publish an edition of the Srimad Bhagavata Mahapurana that is of the same high caliber as this volume, all my devotional needs would be met.

Single: Arguments for the Uncoupled (Sexual Cultures), by Michael Cobb

What single person hasn't suffered? Everyone, it seems, must be (or must want to be) in a couple. To exist outside of the couple is to assume an antisocial position that is ruthlessly discouraged because being in a couple is the way most people bind themselves to the social. Singles might just be the single most reviled sexual minorities today.   Single: Arguments for the Uncoupled offers a polemic account of this supremacy of the couple form, and how that supremacy blocks our understanding of the single. Michael Cobb reads the figurative language surrounding singleness as it traverses an eclectic set of literary, cultural, philosophical, psychoanalytical, and popular culture objects from Plato, Freud, Ralph Ellison, Herman Melville, Virginia Woolf, Barack Obama, Emily Dickinson, Morrissey, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Hannah Arendt to the Bible, Sex and the City, Bridget Jones' Diary, Beyoncé's “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” and HBO's Big Love. Within these flights of fancy, poetry, fiction, strange moments in film and video, paintings made in the desert, bits of song, and memoirs of hiking in national parks, Cobb offers an inspired, eloquent rumination on the single, which is guaranteed to spark conversation and consideration.

Review
"The author offers a smart and stunning look at the 'moribund desperation' of coupledom."-Advocate.com

“Searing, radical, playful, exquisite. This is singular, stunning work. Using the rhythms of banter, suggestion, and devilish claims, Cobb pits the brio, the grandeur of singleness against the deadening form of the couple. Prepare to be provoked by a book as beautiful as it is brilliant."-Kathryn Bond Stockton, author of The Queer Child, or Growing Sideways in the Twentieth Century

"Although the book is deliberately provocative, with its evocations of the couple’s 'steely, enduring logic' and 'toxic emotional restraints,' it’s most helpful to see Cobb’s radical critique not as an ode to unattached monasticism but as suggestions for how the single perspective’s solitude, privacy, and freedom can open up vistas—even in the lives of the happily coupled."-Publishers Weekly

"Using the rhythms of banter, suggestion, and willful claims, even hyperbolic, assertive pronouncements, Cobb creates a unique vantage point from which to assess a remarkable topic, one he nearly makes his own.  Loneliness has been much discussed of late, but singleness has not, not in this way.  The result is an unforgettable mix of witty analysis of pop culture and a targeted dropping of deep, decisive anchors in a few canonical but unexpected texts.  Most impressive, therefore, is Cobb’s deployment of deft transitions that make his switches back and forth between and among discursive registers work—and matter.  With these artfully crafted links, Cobb guides the reader to each new perch.  And if there is a unifying style that paradoxically lubricates and glues together his dynamics, I would call it conversational lyric: a personal tone and direct engagement of the reader that slightly slips that bond to slant past where you thought that Cobb was holding you.”-Queer Theory

"Single is impressive because its focus is original and discreet and so is his arguments which center heavily on details, at times even the use of single words or on an interpretation."-Metapsychology

“Michael Cobb’s new book, Single, is, pun intended, one of a kind. The book’s main argument, that culture abhors a single, unfolds in an engaging way and is studded with beautifully rendered anecdotes, some of a personal nature. Single will be discussed and read for years to come.”-Jack Halberstam, author of The Queer Art of Failure

Disappointed - not what the title implies.
By KC Port
Although a very thoughtful book on the culture of relationships portrayed in various literary and pop culture sources, the book does not address what I thought it would - the complexities of being single and relating to a coupled up world. Way too much time is spent on addressing other aspects of our culture...polygamy, racism, implications of willing our possessions to our beloved, etc. Yeah...not what you would think from the title hmm? The author is obviously very knowledgeable and skilled in interpretting different literary works, but I felt like I was sitting through a college lecture on literary works instead of reading engaging thoughts on what being single means in a coupled up world. I'm not quite halfway through the book and was going to give a chance by sticking it out, but my time is valuable so I'm cutting my $10 losses and moving on.

disappointing
By Dr. Lavinia Rodriguez
Read like a scholarly book - perhaps that was the intent. However, I was hoping to read more of the author's own thoughts about the uncoupled without so much use of "supporting evidence" for his thoughts or beliefs (which were never clear). I was left wanting to know more of the author's beliefs and opinions sans the filler.

African American Literature Beyond Race: An Alternative ReaderFrom Brand: NYU Press

It is widely accepted that the canon of African American literature has racial realism at its core: African American protagonists, social settings, cultural symbols, and racial-political discourse. As a result, writings that are not preoccupied with race have long been invisible—unpublished, out of print, absent from libraries, rarely discussed among scholars, and omitted from anthologies.

However, some of our most celebrated African American authors—from Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright to James Baldwin and Toni Morrison—have resisted this canonical rule, even at the cost of critical dismissal and commercial failure. African American Literature Beyond Race revives this remarkable literary corpus, presenting sixteen short stories, novelettes, and excerpts of novels-from the postbellum nineteenth century to the late twentieth century-that demonstrate this act of literary defiance. Each selection is paired with an original introduction by one of today's leading scholars of African American literature, including Hazel V. Carby, Gerald Early, Mae G. Henderson, George Hutchinson, Carla Peterson, Amritjit Singh, and Werner Sollors.

By casting African Americans in minor roles and marking the protagonists as racially white, neutral, or ambiguous, these works of fiction explore the thematic complexities of human identity, relations, and culture. At the same time, they force us to confront the basic question, “What is African American literature?”

Stories by: James Baldwin, Octavia E. Butler, Samuel R. Delany, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Chester B. Himes, Zora Neale Hurston, Nella Larsen, Toni Morrison, Ann Petry, Wallace Thurman, Jean Toomer, Frank J. Webb, Richard Wright, and Frank Yerby.

Critical Introductions by: Hazel V. Carby, John Charles, Gerald Early, Hazel Arnett Ervin, Matthew Guterl, Mae G. Henderson, George B. Hutchinson, Gene Jarrett, Carla L. Peterson, Amritjit Singh, Werner Sollors, and Jeffrey Allen Tucker.

From Booklist
"African American literature should be defined in the broadest way possible," argues Jarrett in his scholarly yet cogent introduction to this distinctive anthology of 16 works of fiction by black writers. Jarrett cites the many reasons we value African American literature that candidly addresses race matters, then informs us that not every short story or novel by black writers fits the racial realism mode. Now is the time, Jarrett asserts, to recognize such unconventional or anomalous works, fiction that has been "understudied, if studied at all." Jarrett's "reimagination" of African American literature includes fiction in which the race of the protagonist might not be specified, such as Paul Laurence Dunbar's novel The Uncalled or Toni Morrison's brilliant story "Recitatif" and science fiction by Octavia E. Butler and the notorious gay and sometimes pornographic Samuel R. Delany. Also collected are powerful stories about place, family, and sexuality by Jean Toomer, Nella Larsen, and James Baldwin. These complex works of "literary defiance," each incisively analyzed, add up to a genuinely mind-expanding collection. Donna Seaman

Review

“These complex works of ‘literary defiance,’ each incisively analyzed, add up to a genuinely mind-expanding collection.”
-Booklist

“A critically balanced reader featuring raceless Black literature. . . . The author pairs each literature selection with a critical research essay written by an impressive representation of many of the leading scholars of African American literature. These essays are succinct, interesting, informative, and necessary introductions to each author's work.”
-Journal of African American Studies

“As intriguing as it is provocative, this volume requires us to probe the reasons why these texts or authors have been red-lined from the canons of both American literature and African American literature. Bravo to Jarrett and his all-star cast of contributors for helping us re-imagine our literary heritage in fresh and constructive ways!”
-Shelley Fisher Fishkin,Department of English, Stanford University

“This valuable collection demonstrates that black writing need not be a direct transcription of African American experience. It also indicates that the critical conversation around African American literature addresses an ambitious research agenda that includes evaluating what we mean by gender, class, sexuality, and whiteness when we speak of or represent race. . . . A fruitful beginning.”
-MELUS

“This fine volume stands out as an authoritative sampler of canon-defying literature . . . Well-organized, accessible, and free of entangling notes, this reader is a great choice for anyone interested in African American literature.”

This anthology offers a different perspective on African American literature. I have read many of the works collected here and was delighted with this collection because it is "more than race". I plan to use this anthology in the African American literature course I teach. This work is a gold mine!

To Serve My Country, to Serve My Race: The Story of the Only African-American WACS Stationed Overseas During World War II, by Brenda L. Mo

I would have climbed up a mountain to get on the list [to serve overseas]. We were going to do our duty. Despite all the bad things that happened, America was our home. This is where I was born. It was where my mother and father were. There was a feeling of wanting to do your part.
--Gladys Carter, member of the 6888th

To Serve My Country, to Serve my Race is the story of the historic 6888th, the first United States Women's Army Corps unit composed of African-American women to serve overseas.
While African-American men and white women were invited, if belatedly, to serve their country abroad, African-American women were excluded for overseas duty throughout most of WWII. Under political pressure from legislators like Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the NAACP, the black press, and even President Roosevelt, the U.S. War Department was forced to deploy African-American women to the European theater in 1945.
African-American women, having succeeded, through their own activism and political ties, in their quest to shape their own lives, answered the call from all over the country, from every socioeconomic stratum. Stationed in France and England at the end of World War II, the 6888th brought together women like Mary Daniel Williams, a cook in the 6888th who signed up for the Army to escape the slums of Cleveland and to improve her ninth-grade education, and Margaret Barnes Jones, a public relations officer of the 6888th, who grew up in a comfortable household with a politically active mother who encouraged her to challenge the system.
Despite the social, political, and economic restrictions imposed upon these African-American women in their own country, they were eager to serve, not only out of patriotism but out of a desire to uplift their race and dispell bigoted preconceptions about their abilities. Elaine Bennett, a First Sergeant in the 6888th, joined because "I wanted to prove to myself and maybe to the world that we would give what we had back to the United States as a confirmation that we were full- fledged citizens."

Filled with compelling personal testimony based on extensive interviews, To Serve My Country is the first book to document the lives of these courageous pioneers. It reveals how their Army experience affected them for the rest of their lives and how they, in turn, transformed the U.S. military forever.

From Publishers Weekly
The deployment of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only group of black WACs (members of the Women's Army Corps) to serve overseas in WWII, marked a significant turning point in the status of racial minorities and women in the armed forces. Drawing on the testimony of former members of the unit, Moore recounts its formation, training and service in the European theater of operations in 1945-46, highlighting the discrimination the women faced because of their race and gender. Many, as the author shows, campaigned actively to change the race-biased policies of the WACs through boycott and direct protest. She examines what civilian life was like for many of them before they entered the military and the various personal, political and economic reasons that impelled them to join up, then discusses how their military experience influenced their postwar life: "Although they did not gain materially, these women almost invariably said that they benefitted spiritually for having served." Her study is an important contribution to African American and gender studies. Moore, who served six years in the Army, is assistant professor of sociology at SUNY-Buffalo. Illustrations.

From Library Journal
Moore, who has served in the U.S. Army, has written a gender and race study about the status of African American women in the army during World War II. Her academic studies led her to note that African American women have been ignored in major studies about World War II, and in this book she tries to remedy the omission. Moore focuses on the 6888th Batallion, which had the only group of African American Women Army Corps (WAC) who served overseas during the war. Of the 855 women who served, Moore interviewed 51 for this book. Appendixes reproduce the questionnaire and give the names of those interviewed. Chapter notes, a bibliography, and photos are also included. Moore makes frequent comparisons to other studies about military veterans. Her scholarly work will serve as a solid contribution about African American women in World War II.?Dorothy Lilly, Grosse Pointe North H.S. Lib., Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.

From Booklist
African American women were virtually excluded from military service until World War II. They received full military status with the establishment of the WAC, Women's Army Corps, in 1943. The WAC was set up in response to social and political pressures and the "critical need for personnel" during the war. The author relies on interviews with members of the 688th Central Postal Directory battalion, for they were the only African American group to serve overseas. Through a well-wrought investigation, Moore distinguishes the challenges faced by these women in regard to both gender and racial influences, forms a cogent background with historical facts to better present the impact of the WAC on the changing military structure and to list battles and victories of the women, and answers the readers' curiosity with coverage of the social cohesion and conflict within the unit and of the women's lives after military service. Those women still remain in contact with one another and sponsor events celebrating the success and memories of World War II. Moore has made an incredible discovery; this book will make a major contribution to military studies, African American studies, and women studies. Lillian Lewis

I learned of this book attending an event at the Women's Heritage Center in Baltimore. I was born in England and was a child
during WWII. Learning that black women in the military had served in England perked my interest, why was this not more widely
known. I would recommend this book - it breaks through the stereotypes and highlights the prejudice these brave women were
subjected to. Their service to their country should be recognized more.

Why Girls Fight: Female Youth Violence in the Inner City, by Cindy D. Ness

In low-income U.S. cities, street fights between teenage girls are common. These fights take place at school, on street corners, or in parks, when one girl provokes another to the point that she must either “step up” or be labeled a “punk.” Typically, when girls engage in violence that is not strictly self-defense, they are labeled “delinquent,” their actions taken as a sign of emotional pathology. However, in Why Girls Fight, Cindy D. Ness demonstrates that in poor urban areas this kind of street fighting is seen as a normal part of girlhood and a necessary way to earn respect among peers, as well as a way for girls to attain a sense of mastery and self-esteem in a social setting where legal opportunities for achievement are not otherwise easily available.

Ness spent almost two years in west and northeast Philadelphia to get a sense of how teenage girls experience inflicting physical harm and the meanings they assign to it. While most existing work on girls’ violence deals exclusively with gangs, Ness sheds new light on the everyday street fighting of urban girls, arguing that different cultural standards associated with race and class influence the relationship that girls have to physical aggression.

Sex for Life: From Virginity to Viagra, How Sexuality Changes Throughout Our Lives (Intersections)From Brand: NYU Press

Sexual beliefs, behaviors and identities are interwoven throughout our lives, from childhood to old age. An edited collection of original empirical contributions united through its use of a distinctive, cutting-edge theoretical framework, Sex for Life critically examines sexuality across the entire lifespan. Rooted in diverse disciplines and employing a wide range of research methods, the chapters explore the sexual and social transitions that typically map to broad life stages, as well as key age-graded physiological transitions, such as puberty and menopause, while drawing on the latest developments in gender, sexuality, and life course studies.

Sex for Life explores a wide variety of topics, including puberty, sexual initiation, coming out, sexual assault, marriage/life partnering, disability onset, immigration, divorce, menopause, and widowhood, always attending to the social locations – including gender, race, ethnicity, and social class – that shape, and are shaped by, sexuality. The empirical work collected in Sex for Life ultimately speaks to important public policy issues, such as sex education, aging societies, and the increasing politicization of scientific research. Accessibly written, the contributions capture the interplay between individual lives and the ever-changing social-historical context, facilitating new insight not only into people’s sexual lives, but also into ways of studying them, ultimately providing a fresh, new perspective on sexuality.

Review
“This volume promises to be an important scholarly resource for the study of human sexualities from a life course perspective. The chapters present critical reviews of existing literature and new findings on a range of substantive topics that showcase how people’s sexuality across life stages and transitions are influenced by broader cultural and historical contexts; the intersections of gender, race, and social class; and prior life events and experiences."-Sue Sprecher,co-editor of Encyclopedia of Human Relationships

"This book offers great breadth and a far-reaching multi-disciplinary approach to the study of sexuality. There is a very high standard of authorship...[it] is both an excellent starting point for students and researchers, and a useful resource for practitioners."-Ageing and Society

"This collection demonstrates the importance of understanding how sexuality changes throughout a life course. Likewise, it shows the diversity of factors that influence sexuality both by providing an analysis of seldom studied areas (e.g., childhood sexuality, a difficult subject to study for varied reasons) and by looking into the unique experiences of subgroups within the overall population (e.g., immigrants and those with spinal cord injuries). Such diversity shows how much research remains to be done on sexuality throughout life."-Library Journal

“Sex for Life demonstrates the importance of broader cultural and historical factors to an individual’s experiences of sexuality at different life stages. The chapters highlight the range of research methodologies used in this rapidly developing field and provide a wealth of new directions for future theorizing and research.”-Cynthia Graham, editor of The Journal of Sex Research

“In this important and ground-breaking book, Laura Carpenter and John DeLamater have assembled a stunning collection of articles on human sexuality from a life course perspective. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand sexuality as it unfolds from childhood through late life.”-Debra Umberson, author of Death of a Parent: Transition to a New Adult Identity

"This book is equally as useful for scholars of sexuality as it is for a sexualities classroom. The chapters are engaging and accessible while capturing the nuances and intricacies of sexual lives from childhood to old age. Additionally, the chapters are relatively short; Carpenter and DeLamater clearly opted for a greater variety of chapters over depth of analysis. In general this balance is right, though the reader is left wanting more detailed analysis from some chapters. By highlighting the unique insights that a life course perspective can bring to light, the volume makes a compelling argument for integrating this approach into the sociology of sexuality. In so doing, Sex for Life has staked out new territory in the study of sexualities from which exciting new scholarship is sure to come."-American Journal of Sociology

Good for what it covers
By Mark Hubbard
The book was easy to read. The research articles that are included throughout were a nice touch. Overall though I felt like for a book that claims for be discussing sex over the lifespan that they are missing quite a bit.
