The Anchor of My Life: Middle-Class American Mothers and Daughters, 1880-1920 (History of Emotions S), by Linda W. Rosenzweig

Relying on women's own words in letters and journals, Rosenzweig refutes the prescriptive literature of the times with its dire predictions of inevitable rifts between Victorian mothers and their daughters, the new women of the twentieth century. Instead Rosenzweig shows us mothers who rejoiced in their daughters' educational successes and, while they did not always comprehend the nature of the changes taking place, were only too happy to see their daughters escape some of their own restrictions and grief.

Extremely useful to scholars and teachers of women's history and family history, The Anchor of My Life should also be fascinating to the general public for the accurate window that it provides on these complicated family relationship in our history.
—Laurie Crumpacker , Department of History, Simmons College

"Drawing on a broad array of historical sources, The Anchor of My Lifechallenges the common assumption that mother-daughter relationships invariably are characterized by tensions and conflicts. This lively and moving book deserves a wide audience."
—Emily K. Abel , author of Circles of Care: Work and Identity in Women's Lives

The relationship between mothers and daughters has been the subject of much research and study, in such fields as psychoanalysis, sociology, and women's studies. But rarely has the history and evolution of this relationship been examined.

In The Anchor of My Life, Linda W. Rosenzweig draws on a wide range of primary sources--letters, diaries, autobiographies, prescriptive advice or self-help literature, and fiction—to reveal the historical nuances of this pivotal relationship. Rosenzweig's distinctive approach focuses on the interaction between mothers and daughters of the American middle class at the turn of the century, revealing that mothers and daughters managed to sustain close, nurturing relationships in an era marked by a major female generation gap in terms of aspirations and opportunities. Illustrated with photographs and portraits of the time, The Anchor of My Life provocatively challenges the facile, late twentieth-century assumption that the mother-daughter relationship is necessarily defined by hostility, guilt, and antagonism.

From Library Journal
Rosenzweig (education, Chatham Coll.) argues that the relationship between middle-class American mothers and daughters from 1880 to 1920 was characterized not by discord, as the prescriptive literature of that era suggests, but by interdependence, intimacy, affection, and friendship. Through an analysis of advice literature, women's fiction, and journals and letters, Rosenzweig builds a case that despite intergenerational differences in life goals brought about by the changing roles of women, mothers provided essential support for, and were in harmony with, their daughters, which was not the case in England. Confronted with at times conflicting information, Rosenzweig wisely qualifies her conclusions, but her heavily anecdotal argument would have been strengthened by the use of demographic data (e.g., the effect of shrinking family size) and by a more vigorous examination of the literature. Recommended for women's studies and American social history and literature collections.

White by Law was published in 1996 to immense critical acclaim, and established Ian Haney López as one of the most exciting and talented young minds in the legal academy. The first book to fully explore the social and specifically legal construction of race, White by Law inspired a generation of critical race theorists and others interested in the intersection of race and law in American society. Today, it is used and cited widely by not only legal scholars but many others interested in race, ethnicity, culture, politics, gender, and similar socially fabricated facets of American society.

In the first edition of White by Law, Haney López traced the reasoning employed by the courts in their efforts to justify the whiteness of some and the non-whiteness of others, and revealed the criteria that were used, often arbitrarily, to determine whiteness, and thus citizenship: skin color, facial features, national origin, language, culture, ancestry, scientific opinion, and, most importantly, popular opinion.

Ten years later, Haney López revisits the legal construction of race, and argues that current race law has spawned a troubling racial ideology that perpetuates inequality under a new guise: colorblind white dominance. In a new, original essay written specifically for the 10th anniversary edition, he explores this racial paradigm and explains how it contributes to a system of white racial privilege socially and legally defended by restrictive definitions of what counts as race and as racism, and what doesn't, in the eyes of the law. The book also includes a new preface, in which Haney Lopez considers how his own personal experiences with white racial privilege helped engender White by Law.

Review
Praise for the 10th Anniversary Edition
“White by Law remains one of the most significant and generative entries in the crowded field of ‘whiteness studies.’ Ian Haney López has crafted a brilliant study, not merely of how ‘race’ figures in the juridical logic of U.S. citizenship, but of the ways in which law fully participates in the wholesale manufacture of those naturalized groupings we know as 'races.' A terribly important work.”
-Matthew Frye Jacobson, author of Roots Too: White Ethnic Revival in Post-Civil Rights America

“Ten years after its initial publication, White by Law remains the definitive treatment of the naturalization cases, and provides a compelling account of the role of law in constructing race. A wonderful combination of thematic development and historical excavation, one leaves this revised edition with a thoroughgoing understanding of the ways in which citizenship functioned not only to include and exclude but as a process through which people quite literally became white by law.”
-Devon W. Carbado,Professor of Law and Associate Dean, UCLA School of Law

“White by Law remains the definitive work on how American law constructed a ‘white’ race at the turn of the twentieth century. Haney López has added a chapter to the new edition, a sobering analysis of how, in our own time, 'colorblind' law and policy threaten to perpetuate, not eliminate, racial inequality. A must-read”
-Mae M. Ngai, author of Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America

“Here is one work that proved challenging to review with a fresh eye, having been widely reviewed and discussed since its original publication more than 10 years ago….While one's first question upon picking up such a book could easily be ‘why bother?’ with the re-release of an older work, in this case, the strategy works….[T]he addition of the author's personal narrative in the Preface and his intriguing view into the future with the new conclusion will add to the book's pedagogical value. In sum, Haney Lopez has provided a piece of scholarship worthy of bringing out a curtain call on its 10th anniversary.”
-Law and Politics Review

Praise for the 1st edition:

“Haney López performs a major service for anyone truly interested in understanding contemporary debates over racial and ethnic politics. . . . A sobering and crucial lesson for a society committed to equality and fairness.”
-Martha Minow,Harvard Law School

quite informative from a legal perspective
By Jeffery Mingo
I doubt if another reviewer even read the book. Yes, much has changed since the plaintiffs discussed here filed their cases, but that is not to say this book doesn't talk about important issues surrounding race, citizenship, and dichotomies that have crucially informed American history.

Here's the gist of it: back in the day, American law said a person had to be white in order to become a citizen. Much of this had to do with keeping Blacks and Native Americans reduced to second-class members of the society. However, other people: South Asians, Middle Easterners, multiracial people, learned of these rules and tried to get courts to deem them white so that they could have full rights.

This book asks important questions about to whom does America give access and to whom does the country deny it. Identity is not just about what you call yourself; it's about what others, especially those in power, allow you to call yourself.

Nowadays, many Americans may see this as a multiracial society. But in the past, America saw itself as white and black. or at least white and non-white. So this book details how other groups who don't necessarily fit into either category tried to be placed in the powerful group. This book touches on how the law and the court system can be slow to deal with societal change but can also be aggressive in reinforcing inequality in the nation.

Since the 1960s, numerous activists and progressives have been writing book about people of color. Since the early 1990s or so, thinkers now have been asking and answering, "But what about whiteness?" This book is, or at least was, an important contribution to the burgeoning field called "Whitenss Studies." Perhaps those readers completely uninterested in the law, history, and ethnic studies would loathe this book, but for those willing to give it a chance and who completely acknowledge that this country was and can be racially oppressive, then they will find this book highly informative.

Debunking Attacks
By C. Cornell
One of the many attacks Lopez receives regarding White By Law is his alleged "white pessimism" that keeps him from genuinly wanting to deconstruct whiteness, because he would lose his White benefits. This is backed up by his many contradictions throughout the book. Though I agree he does contradict himself quite often, he does not cave into the idea of White superioroity as some critics on this page say. Critics of Lopez who are well versed in Race Theory and who want to deconstruct whiteness, fault him for simotaneously stating that whiteness is a "fantasy" and yet still "exists." To put it in common-man's English, this makes sense. Whiteness DOES exist, but only as a socially constructed idea. To blindly say that Race does not exist in any form is like saying that Liberalism doesn't exist. I mean, you can't touch liberalism. There is no genetic way of identifying liberals. Same with religion. Catholocism doesn't really exist, only in social construct. Critics of Lopez would have him write his entire book with out mention of racial existance because acknowledging race would go against Critical Race Theory. However, this book was not written to be read solely by the most enlightened intellectuals. It was written for any lay-person with a vocabulary large enough to understand it (which should be everyone, but sadly isn't.)
One point I would agree with critics on is that White By Law has large moments of useless contradictory ranting. This is especially obnoxious to the average American who is trying to educate themselves. If Lopez wants to gain more support for his theories, he needs to take the first step in the new intellectual revolution: the uniting between scholars and the average-joe's and the removal of the painfully obvious elitest attitude in the intellectual world. A book more to the point would be a great resource for the masses.
Overall, the book is beneficial. Lopez is not absorbed in his own personal conflict. He admits the painful truth, that race does exist in America. A critical race thesis should read as this "Race exists right now, but it didn't used to and it doesn't have to anymore."

Lopez fully examines the legal construction of race through case ...
By Brian Paul Hanks
Lopez fully examines the legal construction of race through case law. Some points were somewhat complex (such as a section of legal theory), but overall very informative. This book made me really think hard about Whiteness and White Privilege and the social inequities that come with it. I agree (and yes I am "white") with deconstructing Whiteness and the racial taxonomies that pervade in society to this day.

This volume brings together ten original essays by leading Chinese law experts in the United States and beyond. Employing a variety of perspectives and materials, these writings tackle important issues that range from ancient Chinese legal history to aspects of the contemporary legal process in the People’s Republic of China. For example, how was law theorized and practiced during China’s Warring States period circa 4th century B.C? What was the role of case precedents in the Qing (1616-1911) judicial process? What role has law played in China’s on going transformation from central planning to a market economy? Does the current practice of village-level elections foretell a greater and more genuine development of democracy in China? And, given the complexities of its legal tradition, how can one best understand contemporary Chinese law and anticipate the pace and direction of its future development?

The contributors are William P. Alford, Albert H. Chen, Tsung-fu Chen, Donald C. Clarke, Alison W. Conner, R. Randle Edwards, Jamie P. Horsley, William C. Jones, Natalie G. Lichtenstein, and Susan Roosevelt Weld.

This collection of essays is dedicated to Jerome A. Cohen, Professor, New York University Law School, in honor of his pioneering role during the past forty years in American scholarship on law in China.

I was once a frightened feminist. So begins Martha McCaughey's odyssey into the dynamic world of women's self- defense, a culture which transforms women involved with it and which has equally profound implications for feminist theory and activism.

Unprecedented numbers of American women are learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. Sales of mace and pepper spray have skyrocketed. Some 14 million women own handguns. From behind the scenes at gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering Cardio Combat, and in padded attacker courses like Model Mugging, Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse.

And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and women physically fighting back, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new brand of feminism.

From the Back Cover
Unprecedented numbers of American women are today learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. From behind the scenes of gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering "Cardio Combat", and in padded attacker courses like "Model Mugging", Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse. And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and a woman's balled fist, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new kind of feminism, one that will change forever the way we think of gender politics, the female body, and feminism itself.

A nearly flawless book on a fascinating subject
By Kindle Customer
There have been plenty of how-to self defense books. Lots of pictures of techniques, lists of street-awareness skills, and recovery literature. This may be the first detailed treatment by an academic about what self-defense is what it does for the women who take it up, and why some people (including a disturbing number of feminists and government types) are so ambivalent about it.
Dr. McCaughey has done an excellent job of looking into the history of the self-defense movement, the philosophy behind it, and the people involved in it. She wasn't content to make grand pronouncements from behind her word processor. She went out, got involved in her subject, experienced it, and met the people who actually do what she writes about.
This book was written at least partially for an academic audience, so the general reader will have to wade through a little bit of jargon. The author leaves out a couple possibly useful points, and I do not agree with everything she says. But these are minor objections. The field of women's self defense finally has an inspirational scholar who treats it with the depth and seriousness it deserves.

The physicality of feminism
By Jennifer F Armstrong
As an educator in the field of self-defense, I value non-verbal methods of teaching and relating over verbal means. I suspect a lot of people don't know what "the next step is" toward freedom after the learn some feminist ideas. That may be because the ways in which we're taught to inhabit our bodies can often be to accept a mode of withdrawn paralysis.

Martha McCaughey's Physical Feminism seems to go part of the way to alleviate this mindset. It's still not enough, because people turn the full contact self defence itself into a ritual and a fetish. This implies that they still expect their transformation to be done to them as relatively passive objects. The point is to break down this inner need for approval and carry the acquired momentum through into all aspects of one's life.

A very good book for any woman to read
By A Customer
As a former federal agent and owner of a personal protection company that teaches full-contact self defense for women and police defensive tactics, I found this book to be very good. While I may disagree with some individuals Martha spoke with, her book brings out what those of us who teach serious women's self defense have known for ages - SELF-EMPOWERMENT IS THE KEY !!! Good job Martha !

Shameless: Sexual Dissidence in American Culture, by Arlene Stein

Shame, a powerful emotion, leads individuals to feel vulnerable, victimized, rejected. In Shameless, noted scholar and writer Arlene Stein explores American culture's attitudes toward shame and sexuality.

Some say that we live in a world without shame. But American culture is a curious mix of the shameless and the shamers, a seemingly endless parade of Pamela Andersons and Jerry Falwells strutting their stuff and wagging their fingers. With thoughtful analysis and wit, Shameless analyzes these clashing visions of sexual morality.

While conservatives have brought back sexual shame—by pushing for abstinence-only sex education, limitations on abortion, and prohibitions of gay/lesbian civil rights—progressives hold out for sexual liberalization and a society beyond “the closet.” As these two Americas compete with one another, the future of family life, the right to privacy, and the very meaning of morality hang in the balance.

Review

“In welcome contrast to many works in cultural studies, which sometimes collapse under the weight of their theoretical posturing, Shameless is simultaneously rooted in perceptive fieldwork, driven by big ideas, and remarkably free of jargon. The combination of big ideas, methodological sophistication, and history means that undergraduate readers will likely benefit from careful discussion. Nonetheless, the accessibility of Stein’s prose and her timely topic will engage a very wide variety of readers.”
-Lisa D. Brush,University of Pittsburgh

“A sophisticated and subtle collection of essays. . . . Stein’s innovative volume stands out. . . . Stein’s book is notable for combining a commitment to qualitative social science methods with an appropriate grasp of its limitations. She is unusually clear-eyed about the shifting politics of knowledge . . . and reminds us that both sides in the culture wars depend on those we entrust to produce knowledge”
-Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide

𔄬Shameless is simultaneously rooted in perceptive fieldwork, driven by big ideas, and remarkably free of jargon. . . . Shamelee should inform and stimulate a broad audience.”
-Sex Roles

“Arlene Stein has established herself as one of the premier sociologists of sexuality writing today. Skillfully combining historical, sociological, and cultural approaches, this book offers powerful accounts of sexuality in America.”
-Steven Seidman, author of Beyond the Closet: The Transformation of Gay and Lesbian Life

“ Stein elegantly ties together this contentious and complicated history by examining it through the analytical lens of shame. . . . This is an important contribution, since much literature on sexuality from a social constructionist standpoint has sidestepped an analysis of emotions.”
-SIGNS: Journal of Women in Culture and Society

Making the Irish American: History and Heritage of the Irish in the United StatesFrom NYU Press

Featuring 29 classic and original essays on the turbulent, vital, and fascinating story of the Irish in America. The contributors include Linda Dowling Almeida, Margaret Lynch-Brennan, Marion R. Casey, David Noel Doyle, Pete Hamill, Kevin Kenny, Rebecca S. Miller, Mick Moloney, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Peter Quinn, and Calvin Trillin.

All it takes is one St. Patrick's Day in the United States to realize that the Irish did not dissolve into the melting pot, they took possession of it. Few other immigrant peoples have exerted such pervasive influence, have left so deep an impression, have made their values and concerns so central to the destiny of their new country.

In Making the Irish American, J.J. Lee and Marion R. Casey offer a feast of twenty-nine perspectives on the turbulent, vital, endlessly fascinating story of the Irish in America. Combining original research with reprints of classic works, these essays and articles extend far beyond a survey to offer a truly rich understanding of the Irish immigrant impact on America, and America’s impact on the Irish immigrant.

Here the reader will find a brisk, compact history of Ireland itself, and a wide-ranging critique of Irish American historiography, as well as explorations of the multiple complications of religion, reflected in the fluctuating, and sometimes tempestuous, relations between Catholic and Protestant Irish and Scotch-Irish. The authors explore the various channels through which the Irish, men and women, have made their mark, from politics to labor organization, from domestic service to popular and traditional music, from sport to step dancing.

Classic reprints include Daniel Patrick Moynihan's study of the Irish in New York, Pete Hamill’s memoir of President Kennedy—recollecting the responses around him in Belfast at the time of the assassination—Calvin Trillin's New Yorker profile of Judge James J. Comerford, long the iron-handed boss of New York's St. Patrick's Day parade, and Peter Quinn's meditations on the essence of Irish America, past, present and future. They all offer sparkling insights into the evolving tension between becoming American and becoming Irish American.

Making the Irish American is monumental in the best sense—serious but accessible, wide-ranging and far-reaching and enriched by seventy unique illustrations. This exciting and challenging collection belongs on the bookshelf of everyone interested in not only the Irish American, but the American story, of which they form so vivid and prominent a part.

From Publishers Weekly
This massive volume, copublished with Glucksman Ireland House at NYU, covers the Americanization of the Irish in 29 chapters. Eileen Reilly takes a comprehensive, albeit sanitized, look at the history of Ireland up to the present, covering everything from famine to the Good Friday accords. One thing that stands out is the remarkable misogynistic burden that Eamon DeValera's policies placed on Irish women (a married woman could not teach, and the government seemed to have a vested interest in her sexual habits, even through the 1980s). As the Irish inundated America during the Great Famine, we see them crawl up the ladder of success with the help of the "Ubiquitous Bridget," the indispensable Irish maids whose work spanned two centuries. Novelist Peter Quinn looks at "Irish progress from Paddies to Pats." The importance of labor unions in the rise of the Irish into the middle class is documented, as well as how, through battle in two world wars, the Irish finally earned their acceptance as nonhyphenated Americans, capped off by John F. Kennedy's election as president in 1960. This extremely thorough, thoughtful volume covers all the Irish bases up to the present. 70 illus. (Feb.)

collected essays go into all areas of Irish American heritage and accomplishments
By Henry Berry
Of the 29 articles, nine have been previously published; one in 1963, another in 1988, and the others in the past seven or so years. Some authors are widely-known--Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Pete Hamill, Calvin Trillin; while the others are steeped in Irish traditions from heritage and academic or other professional positions. The collected articles are crossovers between popular interest and academic perspective. Most combine popular subjects and approach with historical documentation or data. Within major sections on Irish-American foundations and identity are articles on sports, music, religion, organizations, and the role of notably, in some cases somewhat stereotypical, Irish figures such as domestics known as "biddies" or firemen in Irish-American assimilation and as representative of Irish-Americans in general. For the astute editorial selection of the number of general and somewhat specialized articles, expertise of the authors, and documentation in articles and appendices plus notes and bibliographies, "Making the Irish American" is a major text tying together this field of ethnic studies with American history and social history.

A thoughtful set of essays and articles
By Midwest Book Review
Plenty of books have been written on Irish-American history both locally and nation-wide, but MAKING THE IRISH AMERICAN holds a difference: it's nearly thirty perspectives on the process of the Irish in America and blends original research with reprints of classic analyses, making for a thoughtful set of essays and articles which survey Irish-American history in context of the overall immigrant experience. Any college-level holding strong in ethnic studies or American history will find this an outstanding compilation, highly recommended as a basic collection addition.

He is pastor of one of the largest churches in the country, CEO of a multimillion dollar empire, the host of a television program, author of a dozen bestsellers, and the producer of two Grammy Award-nominated CDs and three critically acclaimed plays. In 2001 Time magazine featured Jakes on the cover and asked: Is Jakes the next Billy Graham

T.D. Jakes draws on extensive research, including interviews with numerous friends and colleagues of Jakes, to examine both Jakes’s rise to prominence and proliferation of a faith industry bent on producing spiritual commodities for mass consumption. Lee frames Jakes and his success as a metaphor for changes in the Black Church and American Protestantism more broadly, looking at the ramifications of his rise—and the rise of similar preachers—for the way in which religion is practiced in this country, how social issues are confronted or ignored, and what is distinctly “American” about Jakes's emergence. While offering elements of biography, the work also seeks to shed light on important aspects of the contemporary American and African American religious experience.

Lee contends that Jakes’s widespread success symbolizes a religious realignment in which mainline churches nationwide are in decline, while innovative churches are experiencing phenomenal growth. He emphasizes the “American-ness” of Jakes’s story and reveals how preachers like Jakes are drawing followers by delivering therapeutic and transformative messages and providing spiritual commodities that are more in tune with postmodern sensibilities.

As the first work to critically examine Bishop Jakes’s life and message, T.D. Jakes is an important contribution to contemporary American religion as well as popular culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Arguing that West Virginia native T.D. Jakes "is the signpost for postdenominational Protestant America" for his "uncanny ability to blend the spiritual with the secular," Tulane University sociologist Lee offers an intriguing exploration of Jakes's popularity. His entrepreneurial spirit and multimedia approach have endeared him to millions, while his lavish lifestyle and focus on Christians' right to material prosperity continue to spark criticism. Lee avoids heavy jargon and effectively pares his study down to the essentials, making this an accessible portrait despite some occasionally awkward prose. His approach is generally well-balanced; he admires Jakes's journey up from poverty, his hard work and innovation, but believes his "strong embrace of capitalism, penchant for self-invention and reinvention, rugged individualism, and... insatiable appetite for success" reflect the darker side of the nation that made him a Christian celebrity. From Booklist
Jakes has risen from poverty in the mining towns of West Virginia to a multimillion--dollar faith industry based in Dallas, benefiting from the controversial trend toward prosperity religion. Lee, a professor of African studies, examines the rags-to-riches life of Jakes in the broader context of changes in how Americans view religion. Lee calls Jakes a postmodern preacher who seeks to combine godly wisdom with psychological insight on the human condition, capitalizing on an uncanny ability to touch on the modern-day ills at the heart of most Americans' spiritual struggles. Lee also explores the changes in Pentecostalism from an ascetic faith to one that preaches prosperity for the pastor and the congregants, a change that has provoked criticism from some quarters. Lee sees the rise of Jakes to a status comparable to that of Billy Graham, forging a following of all races and economic backgrounds, as symbolic of a trend toward the commodification of religion as more churches struggle to hold onto their flock in the face of secular appeals to wealth and therapeutic alternatives. Review

“Lee probes far beyond the rags-to-riches tale, though Bishop Jakes’ riches remain. He devotes much of the book to what he sees as Bishop Jakes' dual nature: businessman and preacher.”
-Dallas Morning News

“A clearly written, thoughtful interrogation of the financially successful, though morally suspect, merger of business and religion achieved by this African American preacher-millionaire.”
-Choice, Recommended

“Most of the public knows about the Bishop T. D. Jakes who graced the cover of Time magazine, preached “Woman, Thou Art Loosed!” and filled stadiums across the country with throngs of weeping fans. But how many know about the Jakes who boasted that he didn't have enough garage space for his luxury cars, said Jesus was rich, and once tried to evict the owners of a home he had just purchased though they only had a week to pay off their debts? That portrait of Jakes comes courtesy of T. D. Jakes: America's New Preacher. Shayne Lee, a sociologist and professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, asks hard questions about Jakes' ministry.”
-Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Lee offers an intriguing exploration of Jakes's popularity. His entrepreneurial spirit and multimedia approach have endeared him to millions, while his lavish lifestyle and focus on Christians' right to material prosperity continue to spark criticism. Lee avoids heavy jargon and effectively pares his study down to the essentials, making this an accessible portrait.”
-Publishers Weekly

“Shayne Lee, an assistant professor of Sociology at Tulane University, has provided us with the first critical examination of the most influential African American preacher of our time. A socio-cultural biography of sorts, the author examines T.D. Jakes rise to prominence from the hills of West Virginia to multimillion-dollar religious corporate enterprise. But this book does more than follow the development of T.D. Jakes and his ministry. As the author puts it, Jakes becomes ‘a prism through which the reader may learn more about contemporary American religion.’ Lee contends that Jakes is an embodiment of traditional American cultural ideals and the postmodern features that inform what it means to be American in this contemporary moment.”

It's about time!
By Keepin it real!
Almost a decade ago a classic book called The Black Church in the African American Experience warned us about a fast growing Neo-Pentecostal movement threatening the traditional black church. It's about time someone picked up their mantle and let us know what Neo-Pentecostalism is all about!

This book is the best work on the black church since Lincoln and Mamiya's classic study back in 1990. Lee picks up right where they left off and provides us with probably the most lucid explanation of how what he calls a "Neo-Pentecostal revolution" is a dominant force in contemporary American religion by using Jakes as its powerful general. The author argues that Jakes is part of a "faith industry" that turns spiritual gifts into "valuable commodities" (in other words, cash cows). Lee uses Jakes to diagnose and forecast the changing American religious landscape in it's hypercapitalist, postmodern form. This book is a must read (and easy read too) for religion scholars and average people (like me) who have been wondering for years why Jakes is so popular. I have a new respect for Jakes and yet Lee raises new concerns as well.

Good
By W. ESq
This is a fair book that deal with a complex subject and man. There will be some that think that any analysis of Bishop Jakes written by a secular writer will be slanted, but the author does a great job of presenting a balance picture. Dr. Lee is not a Jakes partisan , but he is not a hater. He explores how Bishop Jakes enter the national spotlight and what he has done to stay there. One thing that was missing from the book was a meaningful discussion on how people like Bishop Jakes and other "Super Pastors" are impacting religion and faith in this country and overseas. But this book is a good start

From a student of the writer...
By Cleo Coco
I am enjoying your book extremely and I love that it is on a subject that I

would otherwise probably never look to learn about or that even really I would

think, interest me. I never knew the breadth and extent of the vast

televangelist market, and the work of ministers such as Jakes, not only as men

of God but as businessmen. Although I personally am not religious, this

"updating" of the religious industry is completely fascinating. I especially

enjoyed(just as the cynic I am), all of the hypocrisies and oxymorons offered

by men such as Jakes. He is not very different, in fact, from someone like

Paris Hilton, who has made her success by marketing everything she can, and

successfully I might add! Its interesting especially because you want to both

love him and hate him all at the same time. ALthough many of his methods and

lavish lifestyle are controversial, it is important to acknowledge not only his

brilliance as a marketing machine and businessman, but in the end he does offer

a certain hope and message which (though I may not agree with it per se) does

in fact speak to hundreds of thousands.

Life and Practice in the Early Church: A Documentary ReaderFrom Brand: NYU Press

Life and Practice in the Early Church brings together a range of primary texts from the church's first five centuries to demonstrate how early Christians practiced their faith. Rather than focusing on theology, these original documents shed light on how early believers "did church," addressing such practical questions as, how did the church administer baptism? How were sermons delivered? How did the early church carry out its missions endeavors?

Early Christian writings reveal a great deal about the tradition, as well as the wider culture in which it developed. Far from being monolithic, the documents which present the voices of the early church fathers in their own words demonstrate variation and diversity regarding how faith was worked out during the patristic period. The texts illuminate who was eligible for baptism, what was expected of worshippers, how the Eucharist was celebrated, and how church offices and their functions were organized. Contextual introductions explain practices and their development for those with little prior knowledge of Christian history or tradition. The pieces included here, all in accessible English translation, represent such sources as Justin Martyr, Tertullian, the Cappadocians, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, and Augustine.

Review

"The selections recapture the drama and counter-cultural nature of becoming a Christian and creating a community that stood out from the crowd...This collection offers easy access to early Christianity's daily life."

-The Princeton Seminary Bulletin

"This is a most judicious and perceptive collection. No existing selection of Patristic material has such focus. It will provide an invaluable textbook, and will stimulate discussion of how contemporary Christians may learn from the ancient Church."

-Iain Torrance, author of Christology after Chalcedon

This book is a great service for all Christians
By Alan Reynolds
I've had to read this book twice, since I've take McKinion for two different classes. I will say up front--it was worth every minute of it, and would probably be worth reading again.
The format of the book is simple. Each chapter deals with a specific topic concerning the practice of the early church--baptism, worship, preaching, Eucharist, evangelism and church leaders. The author simply introduces the topic, then introduces each work with a succinct summary. After that, he has edited the writings of the early church fathers that has just been explained.
The opportunity to read, first hand, what the church fathers taught is great. The editing keeps the reader from getting lost in the text, focusing in on the subject at hand. It is quite a blessing, since the piety and authority with which the church fathers spoke is lost when reading secondary sources.
The only real complaint about the book is that the section on proclamation relies heavily on Augustine and John Chrysostom, with the most focus on the latter. Of course, these are two of the most prevalent figures in history, but I, personally, was hoping to find a little more diversity.
That being said, the book was still no let down. There is oftentimes talk of becoming a "New Testament Church" today. While the fathers are obviously after the closing of the canon, they do give a major clue as to what that might look like. The differences in modern church life and early church life are often nothing short of astounding. McKinion has done a terrific job, giving the modern reader a taste of early church life.

By Suzan Holland
Wow! Where has this information been all my life?! So glad to have been led to this book. The historical extra-biblical sources really helped fill in some of the gaps in what was going on in the early church and how we ended up where we are today. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in seeing the Church restored.

A picture of the early church
By Aaron K.
Life and Practice of the Early Church gives the reader a look into the beliefs of the early church and how they were practically carried out in the life of the church. It is a compilation of short excerpts from the writings of the church fathers connected by short commentary. Very insightful.

The Virgin of El Barrio: Marian Apparitions, Catholic Evangelizing, and Mexican American Activism (Qualitative Studies in Religion), by Kr

In 1998, a Mexican American woman named Estela Ruiz began seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in south Phoenix. The apparitions and messages spurred the creation of Mary’s Ministries, a Catholic evangelizing group, and its sister organization, ESPIRITU, which focuses on community-based initiatives and social justice for Latinos/as.

Based on ten years of participant observation and in-depth interviews, The Virgin of El Barrio traces the spiritual transformation of Ruiz, the development of the community that has sprung up around her, and the international expansion of their message. Their organizations blend popular and official Catholicism as well as evangelical Protestant styles of praise and worship, shedding light on Catholic responses to the tensions between popular and official piety and the needs of Mexican Americans.

Review

“This book stands as an intimate portrait of the visionary; 'a woman torn between the individualism she enjoyed in the ‘Anglo world’ and her familial commitments in her Mexican-American home.”
-Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

“This wonderfully written study, one of the most comprehensive and insightful books about modern Marian apparitions in North America, takes the story from the Virgin's first appearance to a feminist professional woman distressed by family burdens, through the widening sphere of the apparitions' impact on family and community, to the cult's ultimate role as a national and international vehicle for Catholic evangelizing, especially among Hispanics.”
-CHOICE, highly recommended

“A compelling account of Marian devotion as ‘lived religion’”
-Sociology of Religion

“This is a respectful, sensitive, clearly written book in which the author seeks to resolve the alien ethnographer's dilemma by ‘writing like a relative.’ The reader's reward is a rich sense of the circumstances and struggles of at least some Mexican Americans in South Phoenix to make a good life in the contemporary United States that balances faith and family with education, material strivings, professional growth, discrimination, and personal suffering in ways that begin to bridge the conceptual divide between official and popular religion.”
-American Ethnologist

“A thorough ethnography that sweeps the reader into the world of Marian visionary Estela Ruiz, her family and followers, and the evangelizing ministries they have created in South Phoenix. . . . Fascinating.”
