Business as Usual: The Roots of the Global Financial Meltdown (Possible Futures)From Brand: NYU Press

Situates the current crisis in the historical trajectory of the capitalist world-system, showing how the crisis was made possible not only by neoliberal financial reforms but by a massive turn away from manufacturing things of value towards seeking profit from financial exchange and credit. Much more basic than the result of a few financial traders cheating the system, this is a potential historical turning point. In original essays, the contributors establish why the system was ripe for crisis of the past, and yet why this meltdown was different. The volume concludes by asking whether as deep as the crisis is, it may contain seeds of a new global economy, what role the US will play, and whether China or other countries will rise to global leadership.

Contributors include: Giovanni Arrighi, Gopal Balakrishnan, Manuel Castells, Daniel Chirot, Fernando Coronil, Nancy Fraser, James K. Galbraith, David Harvey, Caglar Keyder, Beverly J. Silver, and Immanuel Wallerstein.

Business as Usual is the first part of a trilogy comprised of the first three books in the Possible Future series.

Volume 1: Business as Usual
Volume 2: The Deepening Crisis
Volume 3: Aftermath

The three volumes are linked by a common introduction and can be purchased individually or as a set.

“Calhoun and Derlugian’s co-edited book will be important for sociologists because of the wide range of arguments enlisted in an attempt to correlate the various parameters and focus discussion on specific theoretical aspects of the crisis.”-Critical Sociology

"The high quality of the wide-ranging essays makes this volume a worthwhile addition to library collections and a valuable resource for both students and specialists wanting to explore the complex roots of the financial crisis."
-M. Perelman,Choice

“There may be a silver lining to the global financial meltdown of 2008, for it has made possible a book such as this one. In Business as Usual, Craig Calhoun and Georgi Derluguian have brought together some of ‘the best and brightest’ in the business and given them a most unusual task: to tell the story of the financial crisis in all its complexity, in a manner that is both clear and precise. The result is critical social science at its best: more than explanation, prediction or prescription, this book offers the promise of actual understanding.”
-Ivan Ascher,University of Massachusetts, Amherst

“A brilliant and inspiring collection of analyses from world-renowned international social theorists and political economists, far-reaching in its implications for our understanding, not just of the current crisis, but of its historical roots and the importance of politics to the future of global socio-economic structures.”
-Kate Nash, author of The Cultural Politics of Human Rights

New York, Year by Year: A Chronology of the Great Metropolis, by Jeffrey A. Kroessler

Winner, The New York Public Library, Best of Reference Award, 2002

If any city deserves a complete chronology, it is surely New York. New York, Year by Year is a cornucopia of the familiar and the forgotten, the historic and the ephemeral, the heroic and the banal. In this handy reference work, Jeffrey A. Kroessler takes us from Verrazano's arrival in 1524 into the new millennium, highlighting the strikes and strikeouts, tunnels and towers, personalities and parades which not only made history in New York, but also proved to be defining moments for the nation.

New York, Year by Year features events such as Mark Twain's first lecture at Cooper Union, and the letter he later wrote when the Brooklyn Public Library tried to restrict access to Huckleberry Finn. In contrast, we are reminded of the publication in the 1950s of Eloise, A Book for Precocious Grown-Ups, Kay Thompson's fanciful tale of a little girl's adventures in the Plaza Hotel, the appearance of the Beat Generation, and the flight (literally) of the Dodgers and Giants to California. New York, Year by Year chronicles the opening of Shea Stadium in April 1964 and the performance by the Beatles there that August. The Sixties also saw the opening of The Fantastiks, which is still running on Sullivan Street, and the closing of Steeplechase, the last of the great amusement parks at Coney Island. And this chronology makes sure we don't forget when Kitty Genovese was murdered in Kew Gardens and her cries for help were left unanswered because her neighbors "didn't want to get involved." Kroessler leads us on a tour of the city from its first settlers until the November 2001 election of a new mayor for the new millennium.

From the colonial era and the Revolution through the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties, Kroessler has compiled a record of cultural, economic, political, and social events. Some are of transient importance, others of lasting significance, but all illuminate the city's fascinating history.

From Booklist
Here is a fascinating chronological history of New York City from 1524 to 2001, looking at the people, buildings, institutions, political events, music, and businesses that helped shape the city. The book is arranged by year and then by date within the year. The events from 1524 to 1899 take up the first 95 pages, while events from 1900 to 2001 dominate the last 200 pages. Descriptions range from one sentence to a paragraph in length and give only the basic facts. In picking events, the author does not claim to be definitive but instead tries to give a feel for the events and people that made the city. He also emphasizes cultural and social events over political ones.

The book is particularly strong on listing important buildings, for example, the Voorlezer's House, the oldest schoolhouse, built in 1695; the World Building, built in 1890; and the Bronx County Jail, built in 1937. Societies and institutions such as the New York Urban League (founded in 1911) and the New York Botanical Garden (founded in 1891) are also listed along with the first performances of operas, musicals, and plays. Though the book is fun to read, it is difficult to use for research. There is no bibliography and there are no citations for any of the entries, so the reader has nothing to refer to for more information. The index lists some people, societies, and specific places, but most of the headings are for more general subjects such as Apartment buildings; Music and musicians, classical; Newspapers. To find when Die Meistersinger was premiered in New York, one has to check all of the entries indexed under Opera and opera singers.

This book would be a good starting point for the casual reader and a valuable tool for students who need to find out what happened in a specific year and for answering quick reference questions about New York. Libraries needing detailed information about New York City will find The Encyclopedia of New York City (Yale Univ., 1995) to be a more in-depth and easier-to-use reference source than New York Year by Year. Using both books would give the researcher a good handle on New York history. RBB

"Here is a fascinating chronological history of New York City from 1524-2001, looking at the people, building, institutions, political events, music and businesses that helped shape the city."

-Booklist

"The entries are well written and cover a broad range of topics, including political, social, and cultural, and the reader often cannot help but utter, 'I didn't know that.'"

-ARBA online

"[Kroessler] does a fine job of chronicling the city's past, incorporating both little-known, flash-in-the-pan nuggest as well as far-reaching, recurring themes."

-Queens Chronicle

“A fresh, endlessly fascinating perspective on the history of New York. The scholarship is serious, but the chronology is as fun as it is informative. Covering all boroughs, entries enrich the experience of the city for all who will explore its pages. One can thumb it forever.”

-Thomas Bender,Director, International Center for Advanced Studies, New York University

“For those who care about New York City and its history—and who doesn't these days?—New York, Year by Year is a rare treat. . . . a richly detailed, scrupulously researched reference book that is accessible, informative, accurate, and a great deal of fun.”

NY Chronology
By A Customer
How many of us grow up in or move to the greatest metropolis in the world without realizing the history of the people and places that came before us. New York Year by Year starts with the arrival of Verrazano in 1524 and in an easy to read, informative, well researched and fun format breezes right up to the 231st consecutive annual performance of Handel's Messiah at Trinity Church. Did you know? - That Nathaniel Hale uttered his famous "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country" at 66th Street and 3rd Avenue (and that his actual words may have differed slightly). That after the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the pennant in 1999, Yogi Berra said to Bernie Williams, "We've been playing these guys for 80 years. They cannot beat us." These and hundreds of others nuggets appear as you march through the years of NY's fabulous history. A great table top book and a great gift.

Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch: Essays On Race and Sexuality (Sexual Cultures), by Dwight McBride

Why hate Abercrombie? In a world rife with human cruelty and oppression, why waste your scorn on a popular clothing retailer? The rationale, Dwight A. McBride argues, lies in “the banality of evil,” or the quiet way discriminatory hiring practices and racist ad campaigns seep into and reflect malevolent undertones in American culture.

McBride maintains that issues of race and sexuality are often subtle and always messy, and his compelling new book does not offer simple answers. Instead, in a collection of essays about such diverse topics as biased marketing strategies, black gay media representations, the role of African American studies in higher education, gay personal ads, and pornography, he offers the evolving insights of one black gay male scholar.

As adept at analyzing affirmative action as dissecting Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, McBride employs a range of academic, journalistic, and autobiographical writing styles. Each chapter speaks a version of the truth about black gay male life, African American studies, and the black community. Original and astute, Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch is a powerful vision of a rapidly changing social landscape.

From Publishers Weekly
"Where does the black gay man go where he can see himself reflected back to himself in all the complex ways in which he exists in the world?" asks the chair of the African American Studies department at Northwestern University. In this collection of 10 smart, provocative essays, McBride explores, from varying vantage points (interracial gay male porn; the essays of Cornel West; the racial implications of Ellen DeGeneres's coming-out show; the way the hair and clothing guidelines for Abercrombie & Fitch employees ensure an almost all-white staff), the tenuous position of a clear, distinct, gay black male presence and voice in cultural discourse and argues for an end to the relative silence. Some of McBride's analysis is perceptive but unsurprising (e.g., his short piece on the role of rage and frustration in the 1995 Los Angeles riots), and his focus on the "bourgeois, well-educated, fairly cosmopolitan gay man" largely shrugs off discussions of class. But much of this collection breaks new ground for contemporary cultural criticism. McBride's look at homophobia in traditional African-American studies is an empathetic but penetrating critique of the discipline, and his explication of the ghettoization of black men in gay male porn (which moves into a more complicated discussion of online sex sites) is truly original work with ramifications well outside of queer studies.

the gay bruthaman breaks it down!
By Jeffery Mingo
This book consists of diverse musings from Dr. Dwight McBride, a gay black man and the chair of African-American studies at Northwestern. He covers myriad topics such as Toni Morrison, the "Ellen" coming-out episode, gay personals websites, and much more. He bar-hops a lot too.

McBride brings up several concerns consistently, and these are the areas where black intellectuals have consensus. He assesses and envisions both the present and future of African-American studies on college campuses. He is forthrightly in support of affirmative action. He is very concerned about who gets to speak and who is taken as truthful in our society. (He does not mention postcolonialist theory but I wondered if he borrowed some of these ideas from Bhabha and Spivak.) He throws around a phrase "compassion fatigue," a very right-on concept in this post-PC, Bush the Second era.

I absolutely love the cover art here. It takes "Paris is Burning" and gives it a butch twist. I have got to find out more about the photographer. In the same way that lay reviewers screamed to know more about the cover work on Siobhan Somerville's "Queering the Color Line," I think other readers and viewers will be equally curious here.

The title of this book is bold. As much as members of the Left condemn multinational corporations, there is a reason to fear them too. I guess McBride is not worried that Abercrombie won't seek revenge upon him. (He never mentions that hit pop song from 1999, by the way.) The title is both anti-capitalist and diva!-tized. It both imitates and stands against the class-privileged, spoiled youth that might did the clothing chain.

McBride refers to the black, gay demographic study "Say It Out Loud!" in several places. That study clearly stated that the grand majority of LGBT blacks don't like the word "queer," yet he freely and frequently uses it here. That must be a sign of spending most of one's time on a college campus.

In the book "A Latina in Hollywood," Dr. Valdivia has chapters that are specific to LatinAs and many that apply to women across racial categories. Similarly, McBride talks about many black, gay matters, but he also focuses on non-gay-specific black matters. When the subtitle states "race and sexuality," it really implies "race AND/OR sexuality." I think this is a great way for double-minority scholars not to be doubly ghetto-ized when it comes to their opinions and ideas. I support this flexibility and think that those interested in intersectionality might find it particularly useful.

McBride is great at bringing up race and sexual orientation matters simultaneously. He notes how a mainstream press article on "the lack of black men" really means the lack of STRAIGHT black men. He calls out heterosexism that many readers wouldn't have bothered to consider. In saying that it takes longer than one sound byte to justify affirmative action, he notes that it takes just as much extended time to challenge homophobic marriage arguments. Despite being an Ivy League graduate and a professor at a prestigious university, McBride tries to bring up socioeconomic issues as much as possible. I love the multi-hued vision here.

Still, there are times when he could have employed that same double vision and failed to do so. He assesses Dr. Cornel West, a heterosexual black male scholar and never mentions how valiantly pro-gay West has been for years. He analyzes Toni Morrison but never mentions that several black gay writers have deemed her work homophobic (Crichlow and Simmons, for example). He repeats the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy but never mentions that foes accused her of both being a lesbian and lusting after a male boss. When discussing the Ellen episode, he mentions Oprah Winfrey as the racial signifier, but never mentions Jenny Shimizu, who made the show for me, a Japanese-American lesbian model who shattered the show's problematic tendency to make all the lesbian characters white.

Even more, I had problems with this book structurally. In a beginning chapter "Straight Black Studies," he mentions heterosexism in black studies for a second and then proceeds to discuss James Baldwin at length. He could have put his musings in the last chapter, another Baldwin essay. With a title like that, you would have thought he'd add to ideas from Simmons' "Some Challenges Facing the Black Gay Intellectual" but he disappointingly fails to do so. His chapter on Anita Hill says NOTHING on the matter that Morrison's anthology "Racing Justice, Engendering Power" hadn't. It was really just a way for him as a black gay man to say, "Yes! I support the sisters."

His largest chapter is subtitled "Race in the Gay Marketplace of Desire." Much of what he says is on point and will open the eyes of many. However, he says that he is going to mention extremely explicit things about himself. He quotes Reid-Pharr and Gary Fisher to ease the reader in and then he says rather tame things about himself. His confessions are not half as erotic as things written by gay academics such as D'Emilio, Delaney, or J.M. Rodriguez. I think he could have found Kobena Mercer's and Richard Fung's work helpful here. When he does mention himself, he says he dates "the rainbow coalition," yet only provides anecdotes between him and white men. Like the classic essay "Playing with the Master's Tools," this essay becomes Eurocentric. It almost can't even imagine romance between two black men or two men of color.

Though I like this book and hated Reid-Pharr's "GBM: Essays," I do think the texts have much in common. I think the editors of this series want scholars to throw in everything and the kitchen sink. Lay readers will like the second part of this book while the first and last parts may confuse them. Bringing up Hugo, Sisyphus, Marx, and several others demonstrates that McBride has much cultural capital and is not limited to race or sexual orientation as topics.

Commendable but a Bit Light Weight
By Null Mann
First let me say that any academic text that gives voice to my black gay brothers and sisters is commendable, given the deaf ear usually turned to such voices. However, I can't give "Hate Abercrombie" more than three stars because it offers fairly straightforward observations that most thinking black gay folks have swapped over their own happy hour tables and coffee klatches.

Though the title essay and most of the others are interesting and provocative, McBride does little more than provoke. He provides neither unifying theory nor original response. The result is a work that is neither academically original nor politically impactful.

McBride apologizes for the personal-anecdotal slant of his writing, but unlike the writers that he quotes--Baldwin, hooks and Hemphill among others--he muffles his personal outrage and its transgressive power in hyper-academic babble. The resulting text is needlessly inaccessible to novice academics and mainstream African-Americans, but not quite "deep" enough for hardcore academia.

In my opinion, had McBride's book not dealt with such a specialized academic niche (black gay studies), it would never have made it into print in its current form.

Don't get me wrong, McBride is a talented observer and competent writer, but he should pick a genre. I'd be happy to see him hone his intellectualism so that he earns a place next to hooks and West; but it would truly thrill me to see him aim his pen toward the thinking black mainstream and become the fiery transformative essayist that I suspect that he is at heart.

Getting Serious About Intersectional Analyses
By JVS
Dwight McBride, in his book, Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch, pens a work that attempts to transform African American Studies while firmly positioning himself within it, arguing that it is crucial that black gay men and black lesbian be acknowledged and made visible parts of the black community.

Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch is organized into three sections: the first proposes different applications for serious analyses of race and gender; the second foregrounds politics, particularly of the emerging field of black queer/gay and lesbian studies in relationship to the heretofore emphasis within African American Studies of race as a lens of analysis instead of a truly intersectional approach which also looks centrally at sexuality (along with gender and class); lastly, the third section focuses more specifically on McBride's theoretical and academic lineage of thinking about race and sexuality.

Early in the book, McBride furthers his claims to the necessity of being able to hear the voices of black gay men and black lesbians by citing queer theory's latency in dealing with its own racism, as well as through a discussion of the politics of respectability, which for blacks foregrounds the conflicting desire for capital with the whiteness of capital.

Ultimately, McBride's purpose is to radically transform the ways in which we think about race in order to effect change in the ways in which we (re-)imagine "the black community"; he is firm in his desire to get others to recognize the diversity that the black community already contains in our everyday realities, and to abandon the false perception of a monolithic black community. He makes evident his deep investment in "the black community" and to African American Studies, while also making clear his politics of location as a black gay man within white-dominated academia, offering a poignant and persuasive personal perspective, as well as a critical analysis for such change in African American Studies.

While not all the essays in this book seem to me accessible to students in Introduction to African American Studies or Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Studies courses, a good number of essays are, and would be a great addition on syllabi.

Opening the Floodgates: Why America Needs to Rethink its Borders and Immigration Laws (Critical America), by Kevin R. Johnson

Seeking to re-imagine the meaning and significance of the international border, Opening the Floodgates makes a case for eliminating the border as a legal construct that impedes the movement of people into this country.

Open migration policies deserve fuller analysis, as evidenced by President Barack Obama’s pledge to make immigration reform a priority. Kevin R. Johnson offers an alternative vision of how U.S. borders might be reconfigured, grounded in moral, economic, and policy arguments for open borders. Importantly, liberalizing migration through an open borders policy would recognize that the enforcement of closed borders cannot stifle the strong, perhaps irresistible, economic, social, and political pressures that fuel international migration.

Controversially, Johnson suggests that open borders are entirely consistent with efforts to prevent terrorism that have dominated immigration enforcement since the events of September 11, 2001. More liberal migration, he suggests, would allow for full attention to be paid to the true dangers to public safety and national security.

Review

“No book could be more timely than Opening the Floodgates. . . . [Johnson] makes a convincing argument for the policy of open borders, if not with the world, then within North America. . . . This book encourages a broader discussion that is currently circulating in American politics, one that looks to the foundations of immigration policy and imagines a major overhaul.”

-Law and Politics Book Review

“A highly readable argument for more permeable borders. . . Johnson offers a comprehensive case for more open borders, responds to a few important criticisms effectively, and presents some thoughtful arguments along the way.”
-Choice

“Finally, an unflinching response to immigration alarmists! This brilliant, challenging book outlines an immigration proposal based on the reality that migration flows are not regulated by border enforcement but by social, economic, and political pressures.”
-Mary Romero, author of Maid in the USA

BEST work out there on this controversial topic!!!...
By CaliProf
Up until 9/11 there had been a growing body of work "theorizing" about the idea of "open borders." Not only did the nativism that's swept America since the terrorists attacks all but kill the thought even entertaining the notion open borders, but the weak scholarship that attempted to defend this idea was at best a slightly interesting mental exercise, at worst (which was most often the case!), just flat out not convincing.

Fortunately for the Left, good hearted liberals and Chomsky radicals need fear no more about losing this debate! Kevin Johnson has single handedly not only revived the case for open borders, but has also turned the oppositions' arguments are their heads by demonstrating not only HOW free movement of people can work for the U.S. and Mexico, but also why its in America's economic, social, and security interests to do so!

From here on out the main question surrounding this debate will no longer be WHY people should support this idea, or HOW would/could it be implemented, but why haven't we done it?!!!!

Gender and Judaism: The Transformation of TraditionFrom Brand: NYU Press

Every morning Jewish men offering their prayers to God in the traditional manner include the line Blessed are you Lord our God, King of the universe who has not made me a woman. Regardless of one's interpretation of this line, it is an inescapable fact that traditional Judaism views women and men and their places within Judaism quite differently.

But Judaism is not a static religion. It has always been influenced by changes in its surrounding environment. Throughout history, issues of gender have both influenced and been influenced by classical and modern Jewish perspectives. This transformation continues today, as feminist thinkers attempt to discover how modern women fit into Jewish thought and practice. Is halakhah gender inclusive? How do conceptualizations of the Jewish home effect Jewish women's identities? What is the relation between the experiences of historical Jewish women and the roles of their present day sisters? How have changing gender roles affected the identity of the Jewish male?

In this groundbreaking anthology, twenty scholars seek to address these and other questions. Among the many subjects covered are: gender boundaries in Kabbalah; images of Jewish masculinity; the challenge of women's rabbinic leadership; Jewish feminist theory; rabbinic responses to wife-beating; Orthodox women in the modern world; and patriarchy, Judaism, and Nazism in German feminist thought.

Review

"This exciting book is based on the premise that we do not already know what Jewish identities are. Mapping Jewish Identities offers pathways away from essentialized notions of Jewishness and provides the intellectual tool for 'alternative modes of Jewish becoming.' A treat to read."-Miriam Peskowitz, author of "Spinning Fantasies: Rabbis, Gender, and History" and coeditor with Laura Levitt of "Judaism since Gender"

"The pleasures and rewards of this volume are ample. Mapping Jewish Identities opens up--and reinvigorates--questions of Jewish identity and difference. En route to revealing the multiple possibilities of modern Jewish identity, it also succeeds in charting vital new routes for Jewish Cultural Studies today."-Ann Pellegrini, author of "Performance Anxieties: Staging Psychoanalysis, Staging Race"

Empire of Sacrifice: The Religious Origins of American Violence, by Jon Pahl

It is widely recognized that American culture is both exceptionally religious and exceptionally violent.  Americans participate in religious communities in high numbers, yet American citizens also own guns at rates far beyond those of citizens in other industrialized nations. Since September 11, 2001, U.S. scholars have understandably discussed religious violence in terms of terrorist acts, a focus that follows U.S. policy. Yet, according to Jon Pahl, to identify religious violence only with terrorism fails to address the long history of American violence rooted in religion throughout the country’s history.

In Empire of Sacrifice, Pahl explains how both of these distinctive features of American culture work together by exploring how constructions along the lines of age, race, and gender have operated to centralize cultural power across American civil or cultural religions in ways that don’t always appear to be “religious” at all. Pahl traces the development of these forms of systemic violence throughout American history and focuses an intense light on the complex and durable interactions between religion and violence in American history, from Puritan Boston to George W. Bush’s Baghdad.

From Publishers Weekly
In this scholarly but generally readable monograph, Lutheran Theological Seminary professor Pahl traces the confluence of violence and religion in the United States. He argues with scholars who situate religious violence largely outside of American borders, claiming instead that it is a recurrent feature in the formation and development of the United States. Pahl emphasizes the ways in which, throughout U.S. history, the notion of sacrifice has rendered killing justifiable and even holy. Building on the work of theorists like René Girard and Mark Juergensmeyer, Pahl lays out four historical case studies—about youth, race, gender, and capital punishment—to develop his theory: Americans have found ways to consider blessed some rather brutal attitudes and behaviors... in patterns that are identifiably religious. His examination, in the epilogue, of the fusion of Christian symbols with military domination in the war on terror, while no longer a unique idea, is more extended and nuanced than most. Particularly helpful is Pahl's term innocent domination, describing a cultural attitude that champions violent systems while remaining convinced of its own virtuous intent. (Feb.)

Review
"Empire of Sacrifice is the most broad-sweeping scholarly examination of religion and violence in the United States written to date."-Jeffrey Williams,American Historical Review

“By uncovering the many ways Americans have misused religion to justify violence, Pahl holds up hope to end the histories of dead men walking. His work contributes to a more peaceful, forgiving, loving and just future for America.”

-Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ,author of Dead Man Walking

"Empire of Sacrifice is a provocative and engaging work of cultural criticism worth reading for the questions it poses about religion and violence as categories, and for the many intersections of the two it finds in places where either religion or violence or both are hidden in plain sight." -Jonathan H. Ebel ,The Journal of American History

“Pahl intends his work as a call to take up the opportunity missed after 9/11, to ‘shape a remarkable global consensus against religious violence.’ This work’s basic paradox is that religions ‘produce violent power’ but exist ultimately to ‘eliminate violence.’ That paradox captures the troubling message but hopeful conclustion to the work.”-CHOICE

"An astute indictment of four centuries of American violence." -Dan McKanan,The Journal of Religion

“A true achievement of Empire of Sacrifice is its untangling of the ‘blissful logic’ that preserves American virtue at all costs. Illuminating the cultural and religious assumptions that justify subtle and not-so-subtle forms of violence, this book invites a healthy self-critical stance on American civil religion and social practices. After reading Empire of Sacrifice, it is impossible to avert one’s eyes to the disturbing, complicated confluence of religion and violence in American culture.” -Jennifer Beste,Xavier University

“Pahl exquisitely illumines the pathway by which religion has made possible American empire and poignantly sketches those who have had to sacrifice to create the superpower we know today. Empire of Sacrifice is an admirable experiment in pulling back the curtain on the religious and cultural mechanisms that are often lost in what Pahl calls our national obsession with ‘innocent domination.’ His case studies are finely tuned windows into the ways in which religion has both abused and freed Americans along lines of gender, race, and class. This book acts as a clarion call for us to think twice when we are called upon to ‘sacrifice’ in the name of God—a strategy that all too often hides our violence in the cloak of religion.”-James K. Wellman, Jr.,author of Evangelical vs. Liberal: The Clash of Christian Cultures in the Pacific Northwest

“[This book] is a wide-ranging, amply detailed, and ethically intelligent book with clear political stakes.” -Rain Taxi

"Empire of Sacrifice is a though-provoking work, sure to join other scholarly considerations of religious violence . . . the book will assist anyone interested in learning more about the religious roots of contemporary violence in American national policies." -Rebecca Moore,Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

I want those pages.
By Sarah
I ordered this book for a course I'm taking called Death & Dying. So far the book is very interesting. I hope I'm not missing any important details because pages 7 and 8 are just left out of the book for no apparent reason. I'm not really sure who's fault this is, NYU press or maybe the enemies of John Pahl who want to keep me from this information. Either way I would really like to know what happened on pages 7 and 8.

Digital Jesus: The Making of a New Christian Fundamentalist Community on the Internet (New and Alternative Religions), by Robert Glenn How

In the 1990s, Marilyn Agee developed one of the most well-known amateur evangelical websites focused on the "End Times", The Bible Prophecy Corner. Around the same time, Lambert Dolphin, a retired Stanford physicist, started the website Lambert's Library to discuss with others online how to experience the divine. While Marilyn and Lambert did not initially correspond directly, they have shared several correspondents in common. Even as early as 1999 it was clear that they were members of the same online network of Christians, a virtual church built around those who embraced a common ideology.
Digital Jesus documents how such like-minded individuals created a large web of religious communication on the Internet, in essence developing a new type of new religious movement--one without a central leader or institution. Based on over a decade of interaction with figures both large and small within this community, Robert Glenn Howard offers the first sustained ethnographic account of the movement as well as a realistic and pragmatic view of how new communication technologies can both empower and disempower the individuals who use them. By tracing the group's origins back to the email lists and "Usenet" groups of the 1980s up to the online forums of today, Digital Jesus also serves as a succinct history of the development of online group communications.

Review
"Howard's Digital Jesus is fascinating   . . . well worth reading, and worth drawing to the attention of Christian friends and family members." -- Jeffrey Barlow, Director of the Berglund Center for Internet Studies, Pacific University

“A forceful and judicious study of the doomsday predilections of Christian Fundamentalist websites. Digital Jesus is uniquely positioned as a long-term analysis that tracks affinities toward intolerance and exclusion while also highlighting online sites that incorporate a more embracive and deliberative set of beliefs.”

-Lee Quimby, author of Millennial Seduction: A Skeptic Confronts Apocalyptic Culture

"When it comes to media coverage of intolerance and the rise of Christian right or how the Internet is destroying sociability, sometimes it can seem that the only group more apocalyptic than the fundamentalists are the journalists themselves. Robert Glenn Howard's book provides a welcome alternative, an example of exactly the kinds of empirically grounded and sensitive research needed to understand the relationship between fundamentalism and the Internet in more subtle ways." -William G. Pooley,Western Folklore

"The book exemplifies the importance of exploring in careful detail the nature of lived religious practice online...Digital Jesus provides a unique contribution to the study of religion and the internet."-Heidi Campbell,Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion

"Digital Jesus offers an insightful contribution to all these discussions through a study of more than ten years of online interactions between American Christian fundamentalists."-Paul Emerson Teusner,Journal of Religion, Media, & Digital Culture

"Writing a succinct but comprehensive ethnographic account of early online Christian communities is a daunting task, but Robert Glenn Howard manages to pull it off with his hefty overview. . . Digital Jesus offers insight into the ways some Christians have moved away from formal institutionalized religion toward a virtual ekklesia, or online worship and fellowship space."-Brittany Shoot,Sojourners Magazine

"Howard does a good job in introducing the overall practices of this brand of online Christianity. He also gives the reader a good sense of the group and many of its key members."-Paul A. Soukup,Communication Research Trends

“One of the best current scholarly contributions to be found on the complex, creative, inventive, evocative world of Internet religion. Howard offers new and exciting insights on the power of non-institutional Christian Fundamentalism.…Mandatory reading for any scholar working to understand contemporary vernacular religion, as well as the ever-changing culture of religious communication. It is equally compelling for general readers trying to perceive the direction of Christianity in post–9/11 America.”

-Leonard Primiano,Cabrini College

"This is a very enriching book for any student both of the period of French History between the Religious Wars and the French Revolution."-Missiology
