History of Sullivan's Expedition Against the Iroquois
By Matthew S. Schweitzer
"Seeds of Empire" is an account of the war for control of the New York frontier and particularly of General John Sullivan's campaign against the Iroquois during the Revolutionary War.
The book gives an excellent overview of the history of the conflict with the Indians in the upstate New York region during the war and gives a particularly good account of St. Leger's expedition against Fort Stanwix and the bloody action at Oriskany in 1777.
In 1779, George Washington, trying to cope with the British on the East Coast, was desperate to find a solution to the "Indian Problem" that had been plauging the frontier settlements in the western country of New York and Pennsylvania. Washtington realized that the best way to deal with marauding British-allied Iroquois Indians was to attack and destory their villages, crops, and supply bases. Thus, he ordered Gen. John Sullivan with a large force of troops, supported by a smaller expedition under the command of Col. Daniel Brodhead further west from Fort Pitt, to march north into Indian territory in western New York. Washinton's orders were very specific that "the immediate objects are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements." Sullivan managed to engage the Indians in battle and drive them away, laying waste to many villages and fields full of crops ready to be harvested. As a result of this example of devastating total war, the Iroquois were reduced to poverty and starvation and effectively taken out of the war. Washington's orders were fulfilled, but at a high price to the Indians. There has been much controversy regarding Sullivan and Washinton's action during this campaign as it was essentially seen as a war of extermination. There are many arguments for and against Washington's decision to subjuagate the Indians with such brutal tactics, but the historical truth is nonetheless that the once-proud and powerful Iroquois League was smashed and would never recover.
This book is an excellent history of these important events that are too often ignored by many popular and scholarly histories of the Revolutionary War. It is often forgotten that the War was fought not only on the great battlefields of the East, but on the frontier, where some of the bloodiest fighting of the war took place.

Wonderful Contribution to Historiography
By James
This book details the events that led up to General Sullivan's scorched-Earth campaign against the Tribes of the Six Nations. The first 6 chapters deal with a "White" perspective and does not shy from Native American atrocities committed against European settlers on their land. However, the second half of the book puts these events in perspective and details the equally atrocious events carried out against Native Americans.
The scorched-Earth campaigns led against the Native Americans is remeniscent of tactics used by ancient armies in southwest Asia. Both points of view are given, but without a doubt the book makes clear who was in the wrong from day one. The title should be a give-away to this fact.
The book assumes the reader has a fairly good knowledge of the American Revolutionary War. There are some points in the book where the author makes mention of some individual or incident indirectly related to a current situation assuming the reader is aware of the name or event being referred to and can see the irony or paradox in the current situation in light of the reference made. For readers with strong knowledge in American history, these nuggets will prove most interesting and thoughtful, but to others they will pass without provoking much thought... although they may intrigue the reader to learn more.
To the lay reader, fine details in the book will read ad nauseum, but to most they are priceless. These are the only reasons I give the book 4 rather than 5 stars. The author does not hold back when describing some of the gruesome details of battles between two armies, but rest assured that he does attempt to lighten the load by using phrases such as, "...dispatched him with a blow from his tomahawk."...
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the wrongs done towards the Iroquois by narrow-minded, racist, land-stealing settlers.

Information-packed, but with a weak narrative
By Dalcassian
This book is a thorough account of the Sullivan expedition, along with its frontier and Indian-policy historical roots. It also provides a less thorough, but still very useful, discussion of the expedition's aftermath. Its content is rich, but the book's style and writing are considerably less so.

Background: The Sullivan expedition was an American rebel government military campaign during the Revolutionary War, overseen by George Washington, which set out to crush Iroquois harassment and warfare against white American rebels and settlers in and around upstate New York. The expedition did this via utter devastation of the Iroquois interior towns and farms. The book details that campaign's progress and its casual cruelty extensively, though not always fluidly or with solid editing. (As one commenter notes, there was one incident involving a captured old squaw that is related twice, and only a few pages apart.)

It may be wrong to highlight the problems given the book's stupendous detail and overall concern for accuracy. But the reader should be prepared NOT to find good context for the events described. There is little detailed discussion of the ongoing progress of the American Revolutionary war while the events are happening. Nor should the reader expect to be carefully introduced to events and people.

For example: in a war among two sets of Anglo-Saxons and Anglicized Indians, common names appear on all sides. This is not handled well. At one point there are about 4 persons surnamed Butler who are active in the flow of the war on each side. But the author will tend to just write something like "Butler then moved his forces forward. . . . " Which Butler?!!! Which side's forces?!!

Maps are also too few and too unclear. So be prepared for some bumps if you do wish to absorb this well-informed account of an important and lesser-known part of the American Revolution. The reader probably should pre-review some good general background of the war's progress before doing so. After that, the reader should also be sure to set aside a large amount of concentration and time to devote full attention to the narrative.

Again, on the more positive side: for information about an overlooked theater of American war history and American Indian history, this book has it all. And the author is honest, sparing no warring side its ignominy. (If anything, the major story is one of the British worsening things -- mainly by sending out allied Iroquois to raid, kill, and scalp, and then not budgeting enough backup support for the inevitable counter-strike. And then not fighting for their loyal Indian allies' interests after the war is over.)

Four stars is a tad generous, but that averages the 5-star level of research and information, and the just-barely 3-star quality of the narrative.

Homeroom Security: School Discipline in an Age of Fear (Youth, Crime, and Justice), by Aaron Kupchik

Police officers, armed security guards, surveillance cameras, and metal detectors are common features of the disturbing new landscape at many of today’s high schools. You will also find new and harsher disciplinary practices: zero-tolerance policies, random searches with drug-sniffing dogs, and mandatory suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, despite the fact that school crime and violence have been decreasing nationally for the past two decades. While most educators, students, and parents accept these harsh policing and punishment strategies based on the assumption that they keep children safe, Aaron Kupchik argues that we need to think more carefully about how we protect and punish students.

In Homeroom Security, Kupchik shows that these policies lead schools to prioritize the rules instead of students, so that students’ real problems—often the very reasons for their misbehavior—get ignored. Based on years of impressive field research, Kupchik demonstrates that the policies we have zealously adopted in schools across the country are the opposite of the strategies that are known to successfully reduce student misbehavior and violence. As a result, contemporary school discipline is often unhelpful, and can be hurtful to students in ways likely to make schools more violent places. Furthermore, those students who are most at-risk of problems in schools and dropping out are the ones who are most affected by these counterproductive policies. Our schools and our students can and should be safe, and Homeroom Security offers real strategies for making them so.

Review

“In his compelling, important book about American schools and discipline, Kupchik, a professor of sociology at the University of Delaware, punctures the myth that tighter security measures stemmed from Columbine or any other school shooting.”
-Kate Tuttle,Boston Globe

“Few issues are more important to parents than school violence. . . . This is research of prime quality that is readable and rigorous on an issue of extraordinary public importance and interest.”
-Jonathan Simon, author of Governing through Crime

"Homeroom Security persuasively raises alarm over the arbitrary and pernicious rules to which students are subjected.  [Kupchik] warns that such practices run the risk of creating docile subjects rather than critical citizens, an essential ingredient for a strong democracy.”-Social Forces

"Kupchik provides a compelling and detailed overview of the current discipline environment in today's schools . . . Kupchik builds the case that the recent law-and-order approach to student behavior may have many negative consequences, such as developing a population that never questions authority while not accomplishing the goal of keeping students safer."-VOYA Library Magazine,VOYA Library Magazine

"In this reevaluation of efforts to address school safety, Kupchik finds that recent attempts to reduce school violence have resulted in actions that contribute to the problem rather than correct it."-R. Roth,Choice

“Kupchik's writing is meticulous and even-handed, even praising the officers whose methods he strongly disagrees with.”

-Salon

Very informational with many different examples
By Kris Krueger
Aaron Kupchik does a compelling job of portraying his opinion on homeroom secuirty and gives many different examples of it. Homeroom Secuirty: School Discipline in an Age of Fear does it's job explaining the different security throughout schools. The book made it interesting to see the various forms of security implemented in schools and whether or not they help control discipline problems. The many "real" examples given throughout the duration of the novel made it enjoyable for me to read. Also I liked how Kupchik stated his opinion clearly but also gave reason as to why he has that opinion as well as the opposing side of his opinions. It made me realize how important interaction between staff, faculty, and students is rather than just security fixes alone. I would recommend this book for more political people and to people in the school system. This could be very helpful in helping schools treat behavioral problems and discipline problems without taking extreme measures that don't seem to be effective.

Christian Theologies of Scripture: A Comparative IntroductionFrom Brand: NYU Press

All religious traditions that ground themselves in texts must grapple with certain questions concerning the texts' authority. Yet there has been much debate within Christianity concerning the nature of scripture and how it should be understood—a debate that has gone on for centuries.

Christian Theologies of Scripture traces what the theological giants have said about scripture from the early days of Christianity until today. It incorporates diverse discussions about the nature of scripture, its authority, and its interpretation, providing a guide to the variety of views about the Bible throughout the Christian tradition.

Preeminent scholars including Michael S. Horton, Graham Ward, and Pamela Bright offer chapters on major figures in the pre-modern, reformation, and early modern eras, from Origen and Aquinas to Luther and Calvin to Barth and Balthasar. They illuminate each thinker's understanding of the Christian scriptures and their views on interpreting the Bible. The book also includes overview chapters to orient readers to the key questions regarding scripture in each era, as well as chapters on scripture and feminism, scripture in the African American Christian tradition, and scripture and postmodernism.

This volume will be indispensable reading for students and all those interested in the nature and authority of Christian scripture.

Review

“Provides a state-of-the-art introduction to how Christian theories of scriptural interpretation have been intimately bound up with beliefs about life with God, examining both the outlooks of movements and periods, and the contributions of great theologians. No one with an interest in theological exegesis of biblical hermeneutics can afford to miss this book.”
-David S. Yeago,Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary

“This volume does what its title promises: it gives an introduction to Christian theologies of scripture, and it does so very well.”
-Religious Studies Review

“What does it mean to call biblical writings the ‘word of God’? This fine collection of readable essays based on current research gives an excellent overview of Christians' answers to that question from the third century to the present and undermines widespread caricatures and over-simplifications.”
-David H. Kelsey,Yale Divinity School

“[I]t represents more than a collection of essays. It is a helpful, at times profound, mapping of Christians’ reflections on their Scriptures.”

Practical
By Indiana Joe
This book was money and time well spent. We of the Christian faith usually fail to recognize that the way we read scripture at our point in place and time is not the only way it has been read. Indeed, many others in whom the Spirit dwells have read it differently. To understand those alternative readings of scripture is not to undermine the foundation of our faith, but to enrich it with the experience of those who have gone before. Well written enough for a finicky reader and objective enough for an armchair scholar. Some chapters could have been more comprehensive (e.g., the patristic era.) Any serious teacher of scripture, clergy or layman, should have this under their belt as essential background knowledge.

A Clear and Concise Introduction
By Z. Williams
Holcomb has gathered a brilliant group of essays which provide a rather useful introduction to the place of Holy Scripture in the thought of theologians and theological movements from the early church through the current day. A reader should not expect some sort of predetermined rubric as to the issues discussed in each essay. That is, the essays do not attack systematically questions such as "Did X view the Bible as the Word of God?" or "Did X view the Bible as inerrant?" and so on. But the essays are better off for that fact: though an introduction, this is not a book for simplistic thinkers, apologists, or culture warriors. Each essays begins on the broad canvas of each theologian or movement and merely highlights the place and, more importantly, the function of Scripture on that canvas.

Each reader's preference as to the best essays in the volume will largely be determined by his theological interest (early church, medieval, modern, etc.). I found with final section particularly satisfying, particularly Stephen Murphy's peice on Scripture in African American theology and spirituality.

Easy to understand
By Carl A. Dixon
The most useful course during my time in seminary was The History of Christian Doctrine. Reading this book has brought back many memories of what I learned in that very detailed course. I recommend this book as a good overview of how scripture has been interpreted since the inception of the Christian Church. The individual chapters are more like introductions to their subjects but will wet your appetite to learn more. Whatever your view of scripture this book will challenge your thinking. My view of scripture fits mostly with those before the Neo Orthodox period but the chapters on Schleiermacher and Barth really caused me to think through my personal convictions regarding the Word of God. So if you have not grappled with the question of Authority and the Word of God, this would be a good place to start.

The Post-Racial Mystique: Media and Race in the Twenty-First Century (Critical Cultural Communication), by Catherine R. Squires

Despite claims from pundits and politicians that we now live in a post-racial America, people seem to keep finding ways to talk about race—from celebrations of the inauguration of the first Black president to resurgent debates about police profiling, race and racism remain salient features of our world. When faced with fervent anti-immigration sentiments, record incarceration rates of Blacks and Latinos, and deepening socio-economic disparities, a new question has erupted in the last decade: What does being post-racial mean?

The Post-Racial Mystique explores how a variety of media—the news, network television, and online, independent media—debate, define and deploy the term “post-racial” in their representations of American politics and society. Using examples from both mainstream and niche media—from prime-time television series to specialty Christian media and audience interactions on social media—Catherine Squires draws upon a variety of disciplines including communication studies, sociology, political science, and cultural studies in order to understand emergent strategies for framing post-racial America. She reveals the ways in which media texts cast U.S. history, re-imagine interpersonal relationships, employ statistics, and inventively redeploy other identity categories in a quest to formulate different ways of responding to race.

Review
“Far too many Americans today see ‘race’ self-deludingly through the foggy lens of ‘post-racism.’ Catherine R. Squires dispels the fog with this insightful study of the enduring grip of ‘race’ over American life.”-John Downing,co-author of Representing ‘Race’: Racisms, Ethnicity and the Media

“With rigor and accessible style, Catherine R. Squires provides an excellent view of the history and contemporary terrain of media and racial discourse in all of its complexity. The Post-Racial Mystique will be a defining book in our long-lasting and complicated conversation about the interrelationship between race and media.”-Charlton McIlwain,co-author of Race Appeal: How Candidates Invoke Race in U.S. Political Campaigns

"Through a series of well chosen and meticulously analyzed case studies, Squires illuminates how postracialism came to be part of the national imaginary and makes a convincing argument for why it ultimately cannot camouflage the ways in which race still matters in the U.S. social life.”-Journal of Communication

The Apprentice. Project Runway. The Bachelor. My Life on the D-list. Extreme Makeover. American Idol. It is virtually impossible to turn on a television without coming across some sort of reality programming. Yet, while this genre has rapidly moved from the fringes of television culture to its lucrative core, critical attention has not kept pace.

Beginning by unearthing its historical roots in early reality shows like Candid Camera and wending its way through An American Family and The Real World to the most recent crop of reality programs, Reality TV, now updated with eight new essays, is one of the first books to address the economic, visual, cultural, audience, and new media dimensions of reality television and has become the standard in the field. The essays provide a complex and comprehensive picture of how and why this genre emerged, what it means, how it differs from earlier television programming, and how it engages societies, industries, and individuals. Topics range from the blending of fact and fiction, to the uses of viewer labor and “interactivity,” to issues of surveillance, gender performativity, hyper-commercialism, and generic parody.

By spanning reality television’s origins in the late 1940s to its current overwhelming popularity, Reality TV demonstrates both the tenacity of the format and its enduring ability to speak to our changing political and social desires and anxieties.

Review
“Calhoun and Derluguian’s edited collection is the second volume of a two-part series that interrogates how the financial crisis exacerbated problems in regimes of global governance.  Chief among the editors’ considerations is how the crisis threatens to ‘derail action on environmental concerns’ (p. 7).  Leading the inquiry is the questions: will states work to create international regulatory systems as a framework for a new world order, or will they be locked into new patterns of global conflict?  Contributors to The Deepening Crisis: Governance Challenges After Neoliberalism fashion responses by taking to task the nature of governance in the context of ecological politics, religion, ethnicity, offshoring, the European Union, and media piracy.”-Critical Sociology

“This volume unravels a complex web of connections around the current financial and economic crisis. Among its revelations are: the difficulty of a renewed Keynesian solution because of the gridlock of weak national and transnational institutions with inadequate authority and oversight; the irony that cap-and-trade solutions to environmental issues rely on the same bankers and traders at the core of the financial crisis; and the maneuvers of offshore capitalism in evading state regulation by instant electronic financial transfers under flags of convenience. This work peels back the skin of a rather sinister global beast.”
-Randall Collins, author of Macro-History: Sociology of the Long Run

“A group of distinguished social scientists tackle some of the central governance challenges produced by the recent economic, political, and social crises. The topics they address―such as the environment, religion, nationalism, war, and the prospects for global governance―are essential to understanding the contemporary world.”
-Arne L. Kalleberg, author of Good Jobs, Bad Jobs: The Rise of Polarized and Precarious Employment Systems in the Uni

“The nation state has been at the institutional heart of the last 200 years as it defined our economic and political lives. It is, however, an insufficient platform from which to face the challenges of the 21st Century. This excellent book provides a very useful schema with which to consider both the limits of our current institutions and the possible shape of their successors. God's New Whiz Kids?: Korean American Evangelicals on Campus, by Rebecca Y. Kim

In the past twenty years, many traditionally white campus religious groups have become Asian American. Today there are more than fifty evangelical Christian groups at UC Berkeley and UCLA alone, and 80% of their members are Asian American. At Harvard, Asian Americans constitute 70% of the Harvard Radcliffe Christian Fellowship, while at Yale, Campus Crusade for Christ is now 90% Asian. Stanford's Intervarsity Christian Fellowship has become almost entirely Asian.

There has been little research, or even acknowledgment, of this striking development.

God’s New Whiz Kids? focuses on second-generation Korean Americans, who make up the majority of Asian American evangelicals, and explores the factors that lead college-bound Korean American evangelicals—from integrated, mixed race neighborhoods—to create racially segregated religious communities on campus. Kim illuminates an emergent “made in the U.S.A.” ethnicity to help explain this trend, and to shed light on a group that may be changing the face of American evangelicalism.

Review

“God’s New Whiz Kids? fully exemplifies the spirit of Asian American Studies by crossing broad disciplinary boundaries to provide the deepest understanding of Korean Americans’ religious lives. Kim deftly weaves together the best literature on identity and power construction from the broader Asian American Studies canon.”

-Journal of Asian American Studies

“This pioneer study on the emergence of Korean American and Asian American Evangelicals on college campuses makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the complex processes of ethnic formation, identity work, and religious participation. . . . A must-read for students of immigration and religion and an indispensable sourcebook for ministers, pastors, and other church leaders who wrestle with questions of diversity and ministry among immigrants and their offspring at the turn of the twenty-first century.”
-Min Zhou,University of California, Los Angeles

“Kim describes a group on the cusp of change, from an immigrant community to a cosmopolitan university campus with a marketplace of religious options.”

-Kate Bowler,Duke Divinity School

“Packed with information on historical context and deeply informed by a growing literature. . . . First-rate sociology and essential reading.”
-Christian Century

“In this fascinating book, Kim explores why second-generation Korean American college students are disproportionately joining Korean ethnic campus ministries over pan-Asian, multiracial, or predominantly white campus ministries. Providing a wealth of detail and information about both campus ministries and second-generation Korean evangelical Christians, God’s New Whiz Kids? is an essential volume for researchers and students of both Asian American and immigrant religious experiences.”

-Pyong Gap Min,co-editor of Building Faith Communities: Religions in Asian America

“Paints a richly contextualized portrait of conservative evangelical campus ministry groups in general.”
-Religious Studies Review

Bodies of Reform: The Rhetoric of Character in Gilded Age America (America and the Long 19th Century), by James B. Salazar

From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable “stuff,” has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity.

Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of “character” in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body.

Review

“Salazar’s splendid study gives this term a cultural history, and in the process shows how the rhetoric of character has profound effects on what we do from child-rearing, to physical exercise, to racial exclusion, to immigrant inclusion, and the contours of democratic citizenship itself.”
-Karen Sánchez-Eppler,Amherst College

"This detailed and carefully argued book charts the development of character...drawing on a rich archive of primary sources."-William Gleason,The Journal of American History

"A comprehensive and original study of the various ways the rhetoric of character appeared in American culture."-Debra Bernardi,American Literary Realism

"Dense and thought-provoking."-J.J. Benardete,Choice

"[Salazar] ably integrates an impressive array of materials into his readings." -New England Quarterly

“James Salazar takes the term ‘character’—pervasive and elusive—and accounts for its centrality by showing how it embodies the contradictions of modern America. In a series of intricate literary readings, he analyzes the ways in which the late-nineteenth-century obsession with building ‘character’ vivified social distinctions but also, in its instabilities, became the pivot for critique.”
-Samuel Otter,University of California, Berkeley
