Queer Theory: An Introduction, by Annamarie Jagose

The political and academic appropriation of the term queer over the last several years has marked a shift in the study of sexuality from a focus on supposedly essential categories as gay and lesbian to more fluid or queer notions of sexual identity. Yet queer is a category still in the process of formation. In Queer Theory, Annamarie Jagose provides a clear and concise explanation of queer theory, tracing it as part of an intriguing history of same-sex love over the last century.

Blending insights from prominent theorists such as Judith Butler and David Halperin, Jagose argues that queer theory's challenge is to create new ways of thinking, not only about fixed sexual identities such as heterosexual and homosexual, but also about other supposedly essential notions such as sexuality and gender and even man and woman.

Review

"Annamarie Jagose knows that queer theory did not spring full-blown from the head of any contemporary theorist. It is the outcome of many different influences and sources, including the homophile movement, gay liberation, and lesbian feminism. In pointing to the history of queer theory—a history that all too often is ignored or elided—Jagose performs a valuable service."

-Henry Abelove,co-editor of The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader

From the Back Cover
In Queer Theory: An Introduction, Annamarie Jagose provides a clear and concise explanation of queer theory, tracing it as part of an intriguing history of same-sex love over the last century, from mid-century homophile movements to gay liberation, the women's movement and lesbian feminism, to the re-appropriation of the term "queer". Carefully interrogating the arguments of supporters and opponents of queer theory, Jagose suggests that its strength lies in its questioning of the very idea of sexual identities. Blending insights from prominent queer theorists such as Judith Butler and David Halperin, Jagose argues that queer theory's challenge is to create new ways of thinking, not only about fixed sexual identities such as heterosexual and homosexual, but also about other supposedly essential notions such as "sexuality" and "gender" and even "man" and "woman".

An excellent, concise introduction..mostly
By Christopher W. Chase
Jagose's slim book is a historical/genealogical account of queer theory, placing it in a historical context of growing gay and lesbian liberation movements, from the homophile movement of the Mattachine Society to lesbian feminism, gay liberation, and the appropriation of the term queer as a strategic term. The essence of modern queer theory as proposed here is to move beyond "identity politics" in gay and lesbian studies. The proposal of any sexual orientation as normative, whether straight or gay, is counter to the deconstructive tendencies of queer theory, which problematizes the whole notion of "orientation" or "gender" or "sexuality." Some have called queer theory the "deconstruction" of gay and lesbian studies, where shifting and unstable sexual identities are destablized in favor of open-ended and multiple readings of cultural phenomena.
This points to the stormy reception queer theory has recieved. Some have argued that this deconstruction of sexual orientation and gender serves the political interests of the right-wing, preserving male and heterosexist hegemony while undermining women's voices and progressive politics. Queer theory, like bisexuals, poses a "crisis of meaning" for many who wish to carve out a safe and protective space for gays and lesbians. As gay and lesbian studies have often relied on sexual orientation/sexual identity as a fundamental category, queer theory attempts to destablize this "bedrock," revealing the power structures and discursive limits within.
The main qualm I have with this book is its relative lack of literary and artistic culture and the role different authors and figures played in the shifts within queer culture. The book would be all the stronger for the inclusion of such material.

An excellent overview
By Christopher Sparks (sparkles@pobox.com)
The author, demonstrating knowledge that can only be termed encyclopaedic, gives an excellent overview of a diverse body of literature devoted to the issues of gender, sexuality and identity. After reading this book I have a firm understanding of the evolution of queer theory and the bibliography will prove invaluable in reading further about various aspects of this fascinating subject. The book is especially valuable as it gives mention to various movements, such as homophile, gay liberation and lesbian feminist, in an Australian as well as American context. Be warned though, you may find it handy to have a dictionary around.

There is Something Queer Going on Here!
By Michael S. Waren
Author Annamarie Jagose does a good job of highlighting the top scholars in the queer studies field and putting them together in one, concise volume. As a media communications scholar with an emphasis in queer studies I found this book immensly helpful. Jagose does a good job of chronicling history as well, so that the reader gets an insight of what was going on historically in the gay rights movement. I applauded the chapter also on lesbian feminism since that is often left out of many queer studies books. Highly recommended for scholar new to this field. While the definition(s) of "queer" are hard to define, I can at least appreciate someone who can make some sense of an often confusing and muddy subject.

European Power and the Japanese Challenge, by William R. Nester

America's relationship with Japan recently passed its 140th anniversary. Over that period, hundreds of books and thousands of articles have explored different issues or periods of the relationship. Yet within that vast library, no book has analyzed the entire relationship from the beginning to the present. In Power Across the Pacific, William R. Nester fills this void, analyzing both the geopolitical phase of America's relationship with Japan (1853-1945) and its geoeconomic phase, from 1945 to the present day.

William R. Nester systematically untangles the interrelated perceptions, convergent and divergent national interests, and shifting power relations that have shaped relations between the two countries. Along the way he identifies the key foreign policy figures for both countries, revealing the ways in which domestic and international interests on both sides affected their interactions. Power Across the Pacific can serve both as a definitive study of the history of U.S.-Japanese relations, as well as a reference for particular periods within that history.

Review

""First Person Political" illuminates why people run for and serve in state legislatures from the standpoint of the legislators themselves and in a way that increases our appreciation of representative democracy. Part of the charm of this book is that it is intensely personal and, therefore, compelling."
-Karl Kurtz, co-author of "Republic on Trial: The Case for Representative Democracy"

"An informative, sophisticated, and entertaining book. Reeher's interviews with three sets of state lawmakers in three distinct legislatures provide candor, real food for thought, and wonderful insights. "First Person Political" stands as a real contribution to understanding legislative politics, the people who practice these politics, and how to gently nudge politicians to provide candid glimpses of their world."
-Burdett Loomis, co-author of "The Sound of Money: How Political Interest Groups Get What They Want"

""First Person Political" fills an important void in our understanding of politicians and politics. Through a combination of surveys and the tools of the political scientist, Reeher provides for the reader both empathy and insight into what makes politicians tick at the state legislative level. We may not like what our state legislators do, but reading this work will help us understand much better who we elect and the constraints that operate on them."
-Thomas J. Volgy, author of "Politics in the Trenches: Citizens, Politicians, and the Fate of Democracy"

"At a time when public disillusionment with elected leaders and political institutions is increasing rapidly, it is refreshing to read a book that highlights the selfless nature of public service. . . . This is a wonderful read. The book realistically portrays the various stages in a legislator's life and the challenges one faces while in office."
-"Perspectives on Politics",

Tugboats of New York: An Illustrated History, by George Matteson

2005 Author of the Year Award—Working Harbor Committee of New York and New Jersey

2006 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show in the category of Trade Illustrated Book Design

Tugboats are the workhorses of the greatest harbor in the world, easing massive ocean liners and garbage scows alike cleanly into their berths. Tugboats of New York captures the history and lore of these iconic craft, from their precursors in the early 1800s to their heyday in the 1950s, when more than 700 small but potent boats dotted the harbor. They are the most versatile of vessels, not only guiding large oceangoing ships safely into harbor, but also conducting rescue operations and navigating vast quantities of oil, cement, and scrap iron through traffic-clogged waters.

A twenty-year veteran of New York tugboats, George Matteson knows the tides and currents of New York from the Bronx to the Verrazano Narrows. His history of tugboating shows how this inherently risky business pits men and their boats against weather, water, and the scarcely measurable physics of ships and barges of far greater dimension.

The story of New York’s tugs parallels the broader history of New York’s industrial development, from the rise of railroads to the decline of the port in the wake of labor disputes and large container ships. It is also a story of remarkable seamen who pass their craft from pilot to apprentice over generations, along with the lore of great waterways that remain unchanged despite the lengthening shadows of skyscrapers and commerce.

Rich with first-person anecdotes of life on the New York waterways and one hundred and fifty black-and-white illustrations, including rare and sumptuous photographs from the likes of Gordon Parks and Todd Webb, Tugboats of New York will fascinate readers interested in New York history, boating, and maritime history.

From The New Yorker
In this illustrated history, Matteson, a twenty-year tugboat veteran, narrates two centuries of the city's history from the decks of its tugboats, whose fortunes "powered up with the rising tide of the nineteenth century and then powered back down with the efficiencies of the twentieth." The first boat in New York meant exclusively for towing entered service in 1828, but business was sporadic; her captain was "more likely to be found in the local saloon than at the helm." In 1871, a tugboat was lured up the Hudson to Sing Sing and shanghaied by escaped Tammany men, then chased by a flotilla of guards in rowboats, who finally ran it aground near Nyack. The peak of the tugboat era was 1929, when eight hundred of them plied the city's waters. Today, there are fewer than two hundred, which are used to dock larger ships, though a handful, Matteson notes elegiacally, still "trundle back and forth across the harbor on an indifferent schedule, carrying mostly Long Island garbage and incinerator ash to the mainland."

Review

“Matteson narrates two hundred years of city history from the decks of its tugboats.&8221;
-The New Yorker

“Matteson knows the lore in depth, telling us how tugs work and how crucially they've served the great port.”
-San Diego Tribune

“This sturdy, if little lauded, workhorse of the city’s waterways has found a champion in George Matteson, himself a veteran tug operator. His marvelous, handsomely designed Tugboats of New York is both an evocative photo album of tugs at work and a detailed essay on nearly two hundred years of tugboat history.”
-BookForum

“A brave and jaunty disquisition, copiously illustrated, on the history of tugboats in the port of New York—written with boundless enthusiasm and affection for its subject, and with more than a little longing for the days when ships of all kinds dominated the rhythm of life in and around the city's endless waterways.”
-Ric Burns

“Breathtaking photographs.... Matteson’s fascinating account of the evolutionary era begins with the geographical formation of New York Harbor, but quickly moves to the era of the vessels themselves.... Anyone fond of books about the way things work will enjoy Matteson’s detailed explanations; others will relish his metaphors.”
-New York Times Book Review

Communication so clear, I feel I'm on a tugboat
By pipas
"Tugboats of New York: An Illustrated History" by George Matteson, is so well-written and informative that I read it in two sittings (I did have to work in between). This book will appeal not only to people interested in tugboats, New York harbor, canals, history, interpersonal interaction, and ships in general, but it will also appeal to those who are interested in social-historical aspects of New York centered around New York harbor starting with the 18th century and continuing through the present.

Aside from "Tugboat Annie," a tv show from the '50's I believe, Tugboats is a topic few people know about but this book will really enlighten them. This first-hand account is extremely well-written, and clear to the lay person; even one who has never been on a boat will understand it. I believe that many readers will be extremely interested in this book which clearly conveys its subject matter with the text accompanied by extremely illustrative photos, many archival. The book is so vivid that there were times when I just about felt seasick reading some of the descriptions (Not really, of course, but the way that the book is written frequently makes one feel that one is right there on the boat).

It is amazing how Matteson has managed to convey the complicated aspects of running tugboats in a way that a layperson can understand. Although the purpose of many non-fiction books is to communicate with the reader, and to have the reader learn something by explaining things in an understandable way without falling into the "jargon" that only people already within the field are able to understand, few attain these goals. In contrast, this will not happen with "Tugboats of New York." The reader will find every word comprehensible, and will not be at all disappointed. Similarly, I can imagine the reader recommending this book to his or her friends. This book, with its clear style and successful communication, can serve as a model for other such books. It will draw people into a topic that they, perhaps, did not know they were interested in. However, by the time they have finished even a few pages, their interest will be peaked. Although a few other books about tugboats have been published, none come close to this one. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. To not read it means missing a uniquely pleasureable opportunity. Kudos to Matteson.

Very nostalgic for me!
By Rudi Franke
As soon as I'd read the New York Times Book Review of this book, I had to have it. Because I was brought up in the New York metropolitan area I was able to enjoy riding the Staten Island ferry to and from Manhatten to enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbor and the tugs going about their business. I also listened in on a short wave radio to the messages relayed through the New York Marine Operator as the tugboat captains got their orders from their bosses on what barge to pick up, where to take it and so on. This book is delightfully written by someone who certainly knows the towing business and who seems to cover every conceivable aspect without becoming excessive. The photographs chosen are of the highest quality and taken by some of the top names among photographers of that era. Many of them are so good, they are "suitable for framing" as the saying goes. Their rendition in the book are of equally top quality and the captions are full of interesting facts and are not just taken from the text of the book but can stand on their own. Very informative and at the same time, easy to read, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to all, especially to those of us who still carry that little boy or girl inside of us.

Faces of America: How 12 Extraordinary People Discovered their Pasts, by Henry Louis Gates Jr.

As a nation of immigrants, the American experience is vibrantly defined by the diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious heritage of its people. Perhaps because so many of their ancestors migrated to this country relatively recently, Americans are especially concerned with their family trees, carving out personal histories by combing through documents such as wills and estate records, federal and state censuses, and private family papers, and mining the stories and tales handed down to them by their forebears.

Since 2007, the Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., has been helping African Americans find long-buried details about their ancestors by researching their family trees and then, when the paper trail ends, by analyzing their DNA and marrying that information to a wealth of historical data. Now, in Faces of America Gates explores the family trees of twelve of America’s most recognizable and extraordinary citizens, individuals who learn that they are of Asian, English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latino, Native American, Swiss, and Syrian ancestry: Inaugural poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian and television personality Stephen Colbert, writer Louise Erdrich, writer Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, cellist Yo Yo Ma, writer and director Mike Nichols, former monarch of Jordan Queen Noor, surgeon and author Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep, and Olympic gold medalist and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

In addition, each of the subjects in Faces of America underwent dense genotyping to trace their genetic ancestry on their father’s line, their mother’s line, and their percentages of European, Asian, Native American, and African ancestry. Faces of America unfolds as a riveting journey into our country’s complex ancestral past. Readers will share in the surprise and delight, the shock and sadness of these twelve individuals themselves as Gates unveils their rich family stories, traced back to their arrival on America’s shores, and beyond, deep into the history of their ancestors’ countries of origin. America, as Gates shows us, is a nation of many historical threads, interwoven and united in the present moment. In this compelling book, Gates demonstrates that where we come from profoundly and fundamentally informs who we are today.

Mitochondrial DNA, passed from mother to child, provides, upon close examination, a record of ancient migration patterns and family groupings. It is what links groups of human beings to each other and it is one of many genetic mysteries that motivated Harvard professor Gates to unravel the historical and genetic past of 12 celebrities, artists, and intellectuals in this follow-up to a previous examination of notable African-Americans. Based on the PBS series of the same name hosted by the author, the book is a deceptively breezy read that contains profound revelations on race, on biology vs. social constructs, and how ancestry can subtly (or resoundingly) manifest itself. There are surprises--he finds a common ancestor between Queen Noor of Jordan and African-American academic Elizabeth Alexander; both are 37th great-granddaughters of Charlemagne--and in getting such subjects as Mike Nichols to open up about their pasts, he finds how powerfully the past informs the present. Gates offers a book stuffed with epiphanies that will spark curiosity among readers about their own ancestry as well as their possible connections to each other.

“There are surprises—[Gates] finds a common ancestor between Queen Noor of Jordan and African-American academic Elizabeth Alexander; both are 37th great-granddaughters of Charlemagne—and in getting such subjects as Mike Nichols to open up about their pasts, he finds how powerfully the past informs the present. Gates offers a book stuffed with epiphanies that will spark curiosity among readers about their own ancestry as well as their possible connections to each other.”
-Publishers Weekly

“Faces of America adds compelling evidence that the American story of race is a far more complicated affair than the conventional wisdom of the past would have us believe. Science, history, and genealogy come together in this accessible, intelligent, and elegant presentation. This is a must read for all who are interested in reconstructing the story of the American people.”
-Annette Gordon-Reed,2009 Pulitzer Prize winner and 2008 National Book Award winner for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family

“In Faces of America, Henry Louis Gates Jr. has found a middle path: He applies the most rigorous genealogical and genetic tools to the family histories of 12 ethnically distinct Americans, and in doing so touches on the history of not only these individuals but on the human race itself...Gates’s breezy, intimate style and obvious affection for his subjects results in a book that is the bionic version of that old fourth-grade family tree assignment, thanks to the support of a world-class Rolodex and Harvard researchers and geneticists. It’s fun.”
-The Boston Globe

“Henry Louis Gates, Jr., takes us on a spellbinding journey into the lives of some of America’s favorite celebrities by excavating historical archives and using the latest advances in genealogy and genetics. A rich tapestry of the nation’s people, Gates’s Faces of America uncovers the common thread that holds us together while highlighting the differences that make us unique from each other and from one generation to the next.”
-Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham,Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and of African and African American Studies, Harvard University

“The complex immigrant story of the United States viewed through extensive genetic and genealogical research into the backgrounds of 12 ethnically diverse, famous Americans.... [I]t is the broader sweep of history and the causes and ramifications of human migrations that engage the reader and give the book its impact.”
-Kirkus Review

Fascinating
By Ohioan
I don' watch much television, so I had never seen Gates' shows on DNA and heredity. What was in this book was new to me, and I found it fascinating. I liked the twelve people Gates' researched, I loved reading their family histories and the results of the genetic and the paper (historical papers) investigations. I also liked the order of the stories, from oldest to youngest, and enjoyed seeing how some of the people were related. I can't figure out why this book hasn't gotten more attention.

This will make EVERYONE want to do their genealogy!
By ST
Do you know anything about your grandparents? Your great grandparents? Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has made something as seemingly ho-hum as your personal family history the most interesting part of your life! He focuses on famous people, but not necessarily rock stars. For example, the great cellist Yo-Yo Ma has never liked his name and thought his father was playing a cruel trick on him---turns out Yo-Yo's name was ordained by an ancestor SEVEN GENERATIONS before he was born! Not only that, but Gates found the original family book in China! If you've ever had a desire to know more about your own history, try out an episode on this on Netflix or Amazon streaming and then buy it---you'll love it!

Nice little book, made some important points
By Docia Rose
Easy to read. Entertaining to have such a wide range of different subjects with such different heritages. My favorite was the black educator whose father had been a prominent Civil Rights leader who discovered that both her paternal and maternal lineages were largely WHITE and dated back to the Magna Carta. Said something profound about the silliness of the concept of Race. Studying the use of DNA in genealogy is hard work, these easier to understand books are nice respite from the more technical ones. Worthwhile.

Asian/Pacific Islander American Women: A Historical AnthologyFrom Brand: NYU Press

Asian/Pacific Islander American Women is the first collection devoted to the historical study of A/PI women's diverse experiences in America. Covering a broad terrain from pre-large scale Asian emigration and Hawaii in its pre-Western contact period to the continental United States, the Philippines, and Guam at the end of the twentieth century, the text views women as historical subjects actively negotiating complex hierarchies of power.

The volume presents new findings about a range of groups, including recent immigrants to the U.S. and understudied communities. Comprised of original new work, it includes chapters on women who are Cambodian, Chamorro, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Native Hawaiian, South Asian, and Vietnamese Americans. It addresses a wide range of women's experiences-as immigrants, military brides, refugees, American born, lesbians, workers, mothers, beauty contestants, and community activists. There are also pieces on historiography and methodology, and bibliographic and video documentary resources.

This groundbreaking anthology is an important addition to the scholarship in Asian/Pacific American studies, ethnic studies, American studies, women's studies, and U.S. history, and is a valuable resource for scholars and students.

The GI War Against Japan: American Soldiers in Asia and the Pacific During World War II, by Peter Schrijvers

Choice Outstanding Academic Title

Even in the midst of World War II, Americans could not help thinking of the lands across the Pacific as a continuation of the American Western frontier. But this perception only heightened American soldiers' frustration as the hostile region ferociously resisted their attempts at control.

The GI War Against Japan recounts the harrowing experiences of American soldiers in Asia and the Pacific. Based on countless diaries and letters, it sweeps across the battlefields, from the early desperate stand at Guadalcanal to the tragic sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis at war's very end. From the daunting spaces of the China-India theater to the fortress islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, Schrijvers brings to life the GIs’ struggle with suffocating wilderness, devastating diseases, and Japanese soldiers who preferred death over life. Amidst the frustration and despair of this war, American soldiers abandoned themselves to an escalating rage that presaged Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The GI’s story is, first and foremost, the story of America's resounding victory over Japan. At the same time, however, the reader will recognize in the extraordinarily high price paid for this victory chilling forebodings of the West’s ultimate defeat in Asia’and America’s in Vietnam.

Review

“Schrijvers’ book is a valuable addition to the literature on the war in the Pacific.”
-H-Net Book Review

“This terrifying, remarkable work examines the attitudes, perceptions, and behavior of U.S. fighting men in the Pacific theatre. . . . Among the most unsettling books I've read in years.”
-The Atlantic Monthly

“Just when it appeared that little remained to be said about the Pacific War, Schrijvers produces the best social history of the conflict to date...This is an important book, not only about WWII but also about the nature of war itself . . . Highly recommended.”
-Choice

“Schrijvers builds upon earlier works and successfully goes beyond them to provide a scholarly account of the full range of American experiences in the Pacific and Asian theatres. He makes excellent use of diaries, letters, training manuals, and official reports. The book is an impressive scholarly achievement. Schrijvers’s vivid portrayal of the American experience in the war against Japan permits us to see that experience in a broader historical context and reveals patterns of thought and action that are enduring features of the American character.”
-The International History Review

“Peter Schrijvers has pulled a ‘double' by writing a worthy companion to The Crash of Ruin: American Combat Soldiers in Europe during World War II. His study of the soldiers' war against Japan transcends simplistic race-hate explanations and reconstructs the psycho-social context of war in which only the enemy remained the same.”
-Allan R. Millett,Director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans

“A rich and compelling cultural and social history of American servicemen and -women serving in Asia and the Pacific during World War II.”
-The Journal of American History

“One cannot read this volume without coming away with a fresh way of thinking about the subject. Peter Schrijvers has broadened our perspective of the sociology of the American fighting man in the Second World War.”
-War In History

Essential reading
By A World War II Reader
Those who cannot handle the ugly truth about warfare, and about warfare in this theater in particular, would do better to stay away from this harrowing book. Those who can, should be encouraged to buy and read it soon, in anticipation of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's much-awaited television series The Pacific.

The Atlantic Monthly is absolutely right: this is a terrifying book, but at the same time - because of that, because it refuses to pull any punches about the true nature of warfare in the Pacific - it is one of the best books ever on what American boys had to go through in the war against that most vicious of foes, the Japanese.

This book provides a unique perspective on the day to day life of the American soldier assigned to Asia and the Pacific in World War II. It is anecdotal and very personal in presentation. A welcome and fascinating read.

Sadly Lacking
By John P. Rooney
"The GI War Against Japan" by Peter Schrijvers. Subtitled: "American Soldiers In Asia And The Pacific During World War II." New York University Press, 2005, Paperback Edition.

Peter Schrijvers has a PhD in History from The Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium and currently teaches at the University of New South Wales, Australia. This book, "The GI War Against Japan", follows the pattern of his previous books which deal with the often neglected effects of World War II on the civilian population. In his current effort, the author has expanded his emphasis to consider the ecological impact of the war. The book is sadly lacking because, in my humble opinion, Dr. Schrijvers has committed the mortal sin of Historians: Judging past events by the moral principles of the present. Do you think that the Imperial Japanese Navy considered the ecological damage that would be caused by the sneak bombing of all those battleships in Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941? Do you know that, today, the Battleship, USS Arizona, BB-39, is still leaking about a quart of oil into the waters of Pearl Harbor? Thank you, Japan. But, Dr. Schrijvers, in his book, emphasizes the ecological damage wrought by American forces in the Pacific Theater. Sorry, but don't you know there was a War on?

The racial card is played by Dr. Schrijvers. Sadly, I do not think that he has given enough emphasis to the racism of Imperial Japan. Recall the "Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. Imperial Japan was at the top of her newly conquered territories. Racially speaking, at the top were the Japanese, the Yamato Race as a nucleus, then the Chinese and then brown skinned Asians, such as Indians or Malaysians or people from the Philippines. On the bottom, of course, were the whites...the European types. The Pacific War, a Naval war, came down to a struggle between a "white" navy, the United States Navy, and the Imperial Japanese Navy. From the highest American admiral to the lowest sailor in the Pacific fleets, the motivating theme was "Remember Pearl Harbor". American propaganda was directed at the sneak attack, well planned, but still a sneak attack by the Japanese. Extravagant propaganda claims in the 1940s appear like racist remarks in 2009. By the way, in December 1944, when Nazi German forces charged through the Ardennes, then President Franklin D. Roosevelt corresponded with General Leslie Groves, (1896-1970), of the Manhattan Project, to ask if the A-Bomb could be used against the ever so-white Nazi Army. The Bomb was not ready at that time.

Sadly, the book is lacking a strong differentiation between US Army forces and the United States Marine Corps. Japanese fanaticism triggered their mass destruction when Japanese forces attacked United Sates Marines. This is not racial, but rather a difference in cultures. The Marines performed mass destruction on another Asian enemy some six years after World War II; see, for example:
"Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950"
by Martin Russ. Dr. Schrijvers appears to be a wee bit confused about the Marine Corps. On page 217, he describes the horror of Americans who watched a man, near the Taj Mahal, carry a dead child to the Jumna River to dispose of the body. Dr. Schrijvers states that the man tied "... a sinker to the corps, then heaved it into the water". Yes, it is the Marine Corps, but the good doctor wanted the English word CORPSE, meaning a body.

Tropics. Let me say that I spent almost three years at Naval Air Station, Key West, Florida. Instead of practicing Anti-Submarine Warfare, we spent our time flying around Cuba, as Dr. Fidel Castro had just converted that island into a Communistic paradise. I spent many a day in sick bay, with cases of tropical boils. This was despite access to modern medicine and fresh water showers daily. I empathize with those Americans who had to live in terrible tropical conditions in order to carry the war to the enemy. The tropical jungle is a terrible place to live, and a horrific place to fight a war, to kill the enemy.

And they were the enemy. Dr. Peter Schrijvers has researched a wealth of material: diaries, newspapers, field reports, letter to the folks back home. Sadly, the book lacks much on the inhumane treatment of prisoners of war by the Japanese. If the good doctor had included some of the stories that are presently available concerning the inhumane treatment of prisoners by Japanese forces, then the scales would be balanced. This book, therefore, does not capture the full range of American experience in the Pacific. The author virtually ignores POWs.

Finally, let me say that my son, Sean, graduated from The Catholic University, Washington, DC, in 2000; so I have nothing against graduates of Catholic U.

The Angel and the Perverts (The Cutting Edge: Lesbian Life and Literature Series), by Lucie Delarue-Mardrus

Set in the lesbian and gay circles of Paris in the 1920s, The Angel and the Perverts tells the story of a hermaphrodite born to upper class parents in Normandy and ignorant of his/her physical difference. As an adult, s/he lives a double life as Marion/Mario, passing undetected as a lesbian in the literary salons of the times, and as a gay man in the cocaine dens made famous by Colette.

Delarue-Mardrus's novel belongs to a category of literature, written between the turn of the century and approximately 1930, which depicted lesbians as members of a third sex. The hermaphrodite became the visual representation of the ways in which lesbians were different from their heterosexual sisters, and Rene Vivien, Natalie Clifford Barney, Rachilde, and Colette, among others, shared Delarue-Mardrus's fascination with the topic.

This is the first translation into English of The Angel and the Perverts. In an astute introduction, Anna Livia rereads Lucie Delarue-Mardrus as a prolific and significant writer, despite the fact that previous scholars viewed her primarily as the wife of the scholar and translator Joseph-Charles Mardrus. Livia also places Delarue-Mardrus's life in a lesbian context for the first time and decodes this delightful novel so that readers will feel quite at home in Mario/Marion's unusual world, which runs the gamut from Auguste Rodin to Jean Cocteau and Sarah Bernhardt.

Amazon.com Review
Lucie Delarue-Mardrus lived during the golden age of lesbian literature: Paris in the 1920s. Her work, like that of her pals Renee Vivien, Sarah Bernhardt, and Natalie Barney, explores the boundaries of gender, sex, and desire. This first English translation of The Angel and the Perverts tells the story of Marion/Mario, a hermaphrodite who travels as easily through lesbian salons as s/he does through gay men's dope dens. The rediscovery of this lost classic contributes much to contemporary gender studies. And the plot and style are a hoot.

Review

”The Angel and the Perverts, admirably translated by Anna Livia, offers a glimpse into the subculture of gender ambiguity that was the origin point for today's lesbian and gay communities. As the question concerning the relationship between homosexuality and gender difference is once again being raised, Delarue-Mardrus' novel no longer seems an anachronistic apologia from a more closeted era, but an intriguing exploration of identities that take gender difference, rather than sexuality, as their starting point."

-Will Roscoe, author of The Zuni Man-Woman

Pervert Power
By Cherie L. Gordon
Wonderful story and characterization of Lorna Wells based on the author's personal knowledge of Natalie Barney. Women don't write like this anymore; it is a bygone era's sytle of writing which is supurb. If you have any interest in women of the Left Bank, buy this book.

Democracy in Modern Iran: Islam, Culture, and Political Change, by Ali Mirsepassi

Can Islamic societies embrace democracy? In Democracy in Modern Iran, Ali Mirsepassi maintains that it is possible, demonstrating that Islam is not inherently hostile to the idea of democracy. Rather, he provides new perspective on how such a political and social transformation could take place, arguing that the key to understanding the integration of Islam and democracy lies in concrete social institutions rather than pre-conceived ideas, the every day experiences rather than abstract theories. Mirsepassi, an Iranian native, provides a rare inside look into the country, offering a deep understanding of how Islamic countries like Iran and Iraq can and will embrace democracy.

Democracy in Modern Iran challenges readers to think about Islam and democracy critically and in a far more nuanced way than is done in black-and-white dichotomies of Islam vs. Democracy, or Iran vs. the West. This essential volume contributes important insights to current discussions, creating a more complex conception of modernity in the Eastern world and, with it, Mirsepassi offers to a broad Western audience a more accurate, less clichéd vision of Iran’s political reality.

Review

“Democracy in Modern Iran, however, is much more than simply a commentary on Iranian politics. In essence, it is a work of comparative political theory that examines the relationship between culture and democracy.”
-Democracy: A Journal of Ideas

"Mirsepassi's study is a valuable contribution which questions the legitimacy of hypothetical and textual generalisations about the relationship between secularism, religion, culture, and politics." -Burak Ozcetin,Political Studies Review

“An extraordinary work that provides an invaluable and much-needed historical, intellectual, and cultural context for developing an understanding of Iran’s society and how Islam has affected political change in that nation. This is a meticulously researched analysis with an original interpretation of the evolving events in Iran; in short, a major volume to be welcomed and celebrated.”
-Vartan Gregorian, author of Islam: A Mosaic, Not a Monolith

“This is an important book, moving beyond describing and categorizing Iranian intellectual trajectories over the modern era and towards a judicious intervention in that debate itself... One cannot but applaud the effort to instill a “practice what you preach” ethic into the Iranian intellectual zeitgeist.”-Middle East Journal

"Democracy in Modern Iran reflects diligent research and insiders' insights. Its convoluted style notwithstanding, it is informative and thought-provoking. Any scholar of social change, the Middle East, or of Iran will benefit from reading it."-Brigitte U. Neary,Critical Sociology

“The author convincingly argues for a view of democracy based not on ‘objective logic,’ but rather on pragmatic lines...[Mirsepassi] does deliver a variety of useful perspectives on the nature of the contemporary hostility.”
-PBS’s Frontline website
