Mainline Christianity: The Past and Future of America's Majority Faith, by Jason S. Lantzer

Since the Revolutionary War, Mainline Christianity has been comprised of the Seven Sisters of American Protestantism—the Congregational Church, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church, the United Methodist Church, the American Baptist Convention, and the Disciples of Christ.  These denominations have been the dominant cultural representatives since the nineteenth century of how and where the majority of American Christians worship. Today, however, the Seven Sisters no longer represent most American Christians. The Mainline has been shrinking while evangelical and fundamentalist churches, as well as non denominational congregations and mega churches, have been attracting more and more members.

In this comprehensive and accessible book, Jason S. Lantzer chronicles the rise and fall of the Seven Sisters, documenting the ways in which they stopped shaping American culture and began to be shaped by it. After reviewing and critiquing the standard decline narrative of the Mainline he argues for a reconceptualization of the Mainline for the twenty-first century, a new grouping of Seven Sisters that seeks to recognize the vibrancy of American Christianity.

Review
"While in some circles, the very premise of Christianity being 'mainline' in any form in the twenty-first-century America is hotly contested, Lantzer wants to retain and redefine the term."-Dwight Zscheile,Lutheran Quarterly

"[…] [T]he book is a valuable resource.  Lantzer’s redefinition of mainline and reorientation of the declension narrative are worth this book’s publication and the reader’s attention.”-Church History

"Provides a wide-ranging survey and trenchant critique of the history of mainline Christianity in America. Lantzer's cautionary tale of the mainline's decline offers a stimulating introduction to these denominations--Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, and others--which remain the church home for tens of millions of American Christians."-Thomas S. Kidd,Baylor University, author of God of Liberty: A Religious History of the American Revolution

"Recommended for lower-division undergraduates and above [as well as] general readers."-CHOICE

"Jason S. Lantzer provides an excellent denomination-by-denomination analysis."-The Journal of American History

"Lantzer of Butler University sees a new mainline emerging from ashes of the old...showing extensive historiographical knowledge and drawing upon manuscript collections, court records, and personal interviews."-Justus D. Doenecke,Anglican and Episcopal History

“…there is much to appreciate in this book.  It provides a useful, concise history of the American Mainline.  […] Mainline Christianity provides a thoughtful, reasoned, and focused overview of this fascinating segment of American religious life.”-Review of Religious Research

the real history of the mainline & implications for the future
By Greg Smith (aka sowhatfaith)
Relevance

For the last several decades the group of denominations historically labeled "mainline" has been declining in number of members and influence in the larger culture. Any talk of a future for an individual mainline denomination or for the group as a whole is heavily influenced by this reality. These conversations have lacked a single historically accurate resource that offers a thorough and thoughtful account of the decline in the context of the full history of the mainline.

Book Basics

Mainline Christianity is a must read for all within the declining denominations, those of other religious traditions within the United States, and those interested in American history - especially in the twentieth century. At just 137 pages (before extensive end notes), Lantzer's one volume approach is concise yet complete, and scholarly yet straightforward.

Mainline Christianity is the story of the development and decline of the Seven Sisters of American Protestantism: the Congregational Church (now a part of the United Church of Christ), the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Methodist Church, the American Baptist Convention, and the Disciples of Christ. It is also an account of Christianity in America today insofar as what denominations could become and already functionally serve as America's mainline insofar as numbers and popular opinion: Evangelical (including the largest American Protestant denomination: Southern Baptist Convention), Roman Catholic (the largest Christian "denomination" in the country and the world), and Pentecostal (currently the fastest growing type of Christianity).

On the Make: Clerks and the Quest for Capital in Nineteenth-Century America (American History and Culture), by Brian P. Luskey

In the bustling cities of the mid-nineteenth-century Northeast, young male clerks working in commercial offices and stores were on the make, persistently seeking wealth, respect, and self-gratification. Yet these strivers and "counter jumpers" discovered that claiming the identities of independent men—while making sense of a volatile capitalist economy and fluid urban society—was fraught with uncertainty.

In On the Make, Brian P. Luskey illuminates at once the power of the ideology of self-making and the important contests over the meanings of respectability, manhood, and citizenship that helped to determine who clerks were and who they would become. Drawing from a rich array of archival materials, including clerks’ diaries, newspapers, credit reports, census data, advice literature, and fiction, Luskey argues that a better understanding of clerks and clerking helps make sense of the culture of capitalism and the society it shaped in this pivotal era.

Review

“In this fascinating portrait of American striving, Luskey locates the origins of white-collar culture in the precarious world of the antebellum clerk. Luskey’s clerks are the forerunners of the men in the gray flannel suits, the ancestors of today’s corporate managers, and his examination of their search for success in the uncertain markets of the nineteenth century expands our understanding of how the middle-class was made. Broadly interdisciplinary in scope and eloquent in the telling, On the Make is a valuable addition to the growing list of books that illuminate the cultural and social history of American business.”

-Timothy B. Spears, author of Chicago Dreaming

"On the Make is essential reading not only for the history of clerks, but as well for the history of manhood, urban life, and class development in antebellum America."-Sharon Ann Murphy,The Historian

“More clearly than any previous scholar, Luskey has answered the question ‘What, exactly, was a clerk?’ Forced to do a wide variety of manual labor, they wore white collars, but in Luskey’s clever turn of phrase, the collars often weren’t all that white. Nor were all clerks created equal. As both clerks and their employers were well aware, many had limited opportunities for upward mobility. This is not just first rate social history that makes an important contribution to our understanding of the consolidation of class in the nineteenth century, but also first rate cultural history that skillfully teases out the ambiguities of the clerk’s place in nineteenth-century popular culture.”
-Amy Greenberg, author of Manifest Manhood and the Antebellum American Empire

The Lavender Vote: Lesbians, Gay Men, and Bisexuals in American Electoral Politics, by Mark Hertzog

In the quarter century since the Stonewall riots in New York City's Greenwich Village launched the national gay-rights movement in earnest, LGB voters have steadily expanded their political influence. The Lavender Vote is the first full- length examination of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals as a factor in American elections. Mark Hertzog here describes the differences in demographics, attitudes, and voting behavior between self-identified bisexuals and homosexuals and the rest of the voting population. He shows that lavender self- identifiers comprise a distinctive voting bloc equal in numbers to Latino voters, more liberal across the board on domestic social issues (though not necessarily on economic or national security issues) than non-gay voters, and extremely unified in high-salience elections. Further, lavender voters, contrary to popular belief, are up for grabs between the two major parties.

Offering a clear and thorough explanation of LGB voting tendencies, this volume will be must-reading for elected officials, candidates for office, and all those interested in learning about LGB voters.

"Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished."

Unique

This is a valuable contribution to the behaviour of gay and lesbian voters at American elections and which establishes some interesting questions for political scientist, namely the size the effect sexuality has on voting behaviour and other political behaviours comparative to gender, ethnicity, age/generation, life cycles, religion, education, socioeconomic status etc

Ground breaking research
By Robin Orlowski
Hertzog's work examines the electoral behavior and political participation of GLBT Americans. Notably with the 1992 election of Bill Clinton, this group came out of the shadows of American politics, and their quest for equality was given unparralleled endorsement first from the campaign trail, and then the White House.
Although they as a discernable voting block tend to be more socially liberal than the general population at large, this does not neccesarily mean GLBT voters are anti-war or the oft-riddiculed "tax and spend liberal". Indeed, GLBT Americans can even be found as members (or at least supporters of) conservative political parties.
Hertzog's premise and supporting research argue that the potential electoral power of GLBT Americans has been historically undertaped (hindered by first a general climate of discrimination, and then the failure to inquire about sexual orientation on previous polling questionaires) and utlized by the major American political parties, but even the advances that happened in the 1990's still leave the community underutlized compared to both the general population and other community voting blocks.
He also looks at voting blocks within the GLBT commuinity and concludes that voters identifying as feminist will have less in common with the heterosexual society than non-feminist GLBT voters. These feminist voters are more likely to register as very liberal on social issues and much less likely to support a strong millitary-industrial complex.
Finally, Hertzog makes some interesting and (somewhat prophetic) predictions for the 1996 presidential elections. Despite uncovering evidence that the GLBT vote is not solidly Democrat, and GLBT's vote for Republicans who are socially moderate, he also warns that the GOP cannot expect to gain this vote if it continues to court people and organizations from the religious right.

This book is heartily reccomended for political and social scientists who are interested in American voting patterns and civil rights movements. Originally published as a doctoral thesis, this volume is certain to be an indispensable classic for researchers and activists alike.

In this authoritative volume, race and ethnicity are themselves considered as central organizing principles in why, how, where and by whom crimes are committed and enforced. The contributors argue that dimensions of race and ethnicity condition the very laws that make certain behaviors criminal, the perception of crime and those who are criminalized, the determination of who becomes a victim of crime under which circumstances, the responses to laws and crime that make some more likely to be defined as criminal, and the ways that individuals and communities are positioned and empowered to respond to crime.

Review

“The volume’s devotion to establishing comparative studies of racial and ethnic groups and to acknowledging regional and temporal variances yields productive insights into structural and social inequalities in the United States.”
-Journal of American Studies

“The most comprehensive treatment to date of the relationship between race, ethnicity, and crime. This collection will be valuable to practitioners and criminological theorists alike because it contains vast amounts of data on the topic, then orders and interprets these data with a strong socio-historical lens, enhanced by a comparative perspective.”
-Troy Duster, author of Backdoor to Eugenics

“Shines a new, critical light on race, ethnicity, crime and justice. The text pushes us to consider how these terms are defined, what's missing from our conventional analyses and ultimately why and how race matters in discussions of justice.”
-Katheryn Russell-Brown,author of The Color of Crime: Racial Hoaxes, White Fear, Black Protectionism, Police Harassment, and Other Macroaggressions

“With a dedicated focus on race and ethnicity, and through an examination of heretofore neglected groups (e.g., Haitian immigrants and rural blacks), the authors both broaden and deepen our understanding of the influence of race and ethnicity, often surprising us with their results. . . . The editors have assembled an impressive group of contributors who bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table and also remind us how time-tested constructs such as social disorganization, informal social control, and the culture of violence can be applied in ways that allow us to learn something new about race, ethnicity, and crime. . . . The Many Colors of Crime is an important book not only for criminologists but also for those with an interest in race and ethnicity generally.”

-American Journal of Sociology

“With a distinguished cast of scholars, this book makes a major contribution to the field in its framing of a very complex social problem.”
-Simon I. Singer, author of Recriminalizing Delinquency: Violent Juvenile Crime and Juvenile Justice Reform

Control: A History of Behavioral Psychology (Qualitative Studies in Psychology), by John A. Mills

Behaviorism has been the dominant force in the creation of modern American psychology. However, the unquestioned and unquestioning nature of this dominance has obfuscated the complexity of behaviorism.

Control serves as an antidote to this historical myopia, providing the most comprehensive history of behaviorism yet written. Mills successfully balances the investigation of individual theorists and their contributions with analysis of the structures of assumption which underlie all behaviorist psychology, and with behaviorism's role as both creator and creature of larger American intellectual patterns, practices, and values.

Furthermore, Mills provides a cogent critique of behaviorists' narrow attitudes toward human motivation, exploring how their positivism cripples their ability to account for the unobservable, inner factors that control behavior. Control's blend of history and criticism advances our understanding not only of behaviorism, but also the development of social science and positivism in twentieth-century America.

Progressivist Agenda & the Mindless Emulation of 19th Century Physics
By Dennis B. Mulcare
In Arthur Koestler’s “The Ghost in the Machine,” the first chapter is entitled “The Poverty of Psychology.” Moreover, he regards the condition of mid-twentieth century psychology as “a modern version of the dark ages,” and behaviorist dogma as tantamount to a flat earth credo regarding the human mind. The subject book gives appreciable insight into the aptness of Koestler’s characterizations of psychology/behaviorism during much of the twentieth century. This book is primarily history by an academic psychologist, but additionally it provides informed analysis and significant commentary to apprehend the behaviorist movement, formulations, and ideological presuppositions. In all then, the book is illuminating and valuable, albeit somewhat of a dry read.

To cut to the chase, behaviorism’s veneer of scientific authenticity is demolished conclusively in a terse characterization of its doctrinaire modus operandi. As found on page 183: “In the natural sciences...the subject matter controls the methods of inquiry....But in psychology, operationism reigned supreme....the methods determined the choice of appropriate subject matter and the mode of solution of problems.” Welcome to the closed world of a pseudoscience!

Then on page 2: “The essence of behaviorism is the equating of theory with application, understanding with prediction, and the workings of the human mind with social technology.” Acceptance of these incongruous conflations was facilitated by prior commitments endemic to all strains of behaviorism:

• prediction and control of behavior as the goal of psychology
• aversion to philosophical speculation
• nevertheless, acceptance of the philosophical position of pragmatic positivism
• materialist equivalency of mental and physical events
• adaptation of Bridgman’s operationalism
• applicability of animal or mentally impaired human experimental resuls to humans at large
• strict emphasis on quantified functional or instrumental aspects of behavior.

Basically, behaviorism was anchored in ideological precepts, largely due to its close alignment with progressivism. Their overlap of major interests and basic pursuits centers on the ideology which holds that: science should serve the good of society, and not primarily truth; both sectors should develop technology that supports the ends of society; and they should develop technologies that shape individuals to contribute to society. Of course the definition of the factors benefiting society would of course have be the province of the ruling elite, as subserved by enabling elements like the so-called behavioral social scientists.

Behavior modification was a prominent product of the behaviorist agenda, and apparently still a continuing practice. I had expected that this book would connect it with the behaviorists’ expressed goal of inducing individuals to contribute to society in elitist-prescribed ways. Unfortunately, this topic was not addressed even though one chapter was entitled “Behaviorists as Social Engineers: Behavior Modification Applied to Abnormal Psychology.” Although the chapter did address therapeutic treatment of mentally troubled persons, that reported service was performed by health care personnel, not social engineers. However, it would instead be the latter trying to manipulate the behavior of members of the population at large to conform with the government-sponsored behavior initiatives or scripts. Nor did I note any such references in the end notes. In any case, I deem this book to be deficient in its treatment of this motivating facet of the behaviorist agenda that is identified herein, but not elaborated at all.

In retrospect, it seems quite baffling that behaviorism remained dominant in academia for about half a century. The author identifies several factors that fostered this dominance: a specialized vocabulary and concept mindset engendered as a routine part of undergraduate education; non-pluralistic environment in most psychology departments and research journals; graduate school proselytizing; restrictions on admissible research projects; and client application targets for prediction and control capabilities. In general, however, the overarching reason for behaviorism’s dominance is seen to be its closed-world, ideologically restrictive dogma, or the deprecation of bone fide open-minded scholarship. Of course, the ascendancy of cognitive psychology finally offered a compellingly attractive alternative to behaviorism.

Alas, it takes some perseverance to read this book, not so much due to the author’s writing style, but because of the monotonous puerile pretenses of behaviorism. Incredibly, it remained dominant for decades in academia. Moreover, it is quite disturbing that such transparent pseudoscience has been pursued potentially to legitimize or enable statist intervention in society so as to secure and enforce populace control. Yes, Control - that is the operative word in the behaviorist movement as well as in the book’s title. Congratulations to the author for tracing and analyzing this movement’s motivations and essential trajectory. Despite the current ascendancy of cognitivism, the malady of behaviorism remains unfortunately far from extinguished.

Pimps Up, Ho's Down: Hip Hop's Hold on Young Black Women, by T. Denean Denean Sharpley-Whiting

2007 Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Emily Toth Award

Pimps Up, Ho’s Down pulls at the threads of the intricately knotted issues surrounding young black women and hip hop culture. What unravels for Tracy D. Sharpley-Whiting is a new, and problematic, politics of gender. In this fascinating and forceful book, Sharpley-Whiting, a feminist writer who is a member of the hip hop generation, interrogates the complexities of young black women's engagement with a culture that is masculinist, misogynistic, and frequently mystifying.

Beyond their portrayal in rap lyrics, the display of black women in music videos, television, film, fashion, and on the Internet is indispensable to the mass media engineered appeal of hip hop culture, the author argues. And the commercial trafficking in the images and behaviors associated with hip hop has made them appear normal, acceptable, and entertaining—both in the U.S. and around the world.

Sharpley-Whiting questions the impacts of hip hop's increasing alliance with the sex industry, the rise of groupie culture in the hip hop world, the impact of hip hop's compulsory heterosexual culture on young black women, and the permeation of the hip hop ethos into young black women's conceptions of love and romance.

The author knows her subject from the inside. Coming of age in the midst of hip hop's evolution in the late 1980s, she mixed her graduate studies with work as a runway and print model in the 1990s. Her book features interviews with exotic dancers, black hip hop groupies, and hip hop generation members Jacklyn “Diva” Bush, rapper Trina, and filmmaker Aishah Simmons, along with the voices of many “everyday” young women.

Pimps Up, Ho’s Down turns down the volume and amplifies the substance of discussions about hip hop culture and to provide a space for young black women to be heard.

Review

"Sharpley-Whiting’s uncommon perspective is one that deserves to be examined more often."

-Bitch

“Sharpley-Whiting’s book does not suffer from the sort of cowardice one too often hears from black academics who genuflect to hip hop in order to stay current with the tastes of the students who provide them with whatever power they have on college campuses. Sharpley-Whiting calls them as she sees them and wisely quotes the offensive material when necessary. Her book is high level in its research and its thought, and those looking for adult ideas about the subject should look it up.”
-Stanley Crouch,New York Daily News

"Pimps Up, Ho's Downis an ambitious project that engages, rather than skirts, the complicated domain of sex, gender, power and hip hop. The book is extremely readable and suitiable for a variety of audiences."-Valerie Chepp,Cultural Sociology

“Sharpley-Whiting gets at the heart of the paradox . . . and puts the discussion on the turntable.”
-Washington Post

“Offers damning evidence about hip hop’s underlying racial and social prejudices, examining the politics of gender and providing a feminist’s perspective and insights into black music’s underlying message.”
-The Midwest Book Review

“Offers an insightful look into the strip clubs, groupie culture, and other aspects of hip hop that have given a voice to the disenfranchised while raising troubling questions about what those voices are saying and doing.”
-Vanderbilt Magazine

“Sharpley-Whiting unmasks thought provoking socio-political commentaries concerning sexual obsession in rap music and its effects on the black female sense of self.”
-Allhiphop.com

More questions than answers.
By Amy E. Kaherl
This work of T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting is an interesting dialogue on the effects of hip-hop culture on the lives of young black women. The book is a well-researched back-story on visual stimulation and power women's bodies have in hip-hop culture. The book focuses on the bodies of women as they are portrayed in videos, films, Internet, and strip clubs. It offers new thoughts to women's sexuality, pleasure, beauty, and labor outside a conservative space. The contribution of hip hop is important as it reveals motivations towards body, sex, and the realms of abuse and control. There are great facts and great resources to anyone interested in contributing to the conversation of the future of hip-hop and women.

Where I begin to struggle with this book is when it focuses solely on the images of women and offering no solutions or suggestions on what can be done to help motivate change. It left me with questions of what can we do to help change future generations perception of the body, feminism/womanism, and hip-hop. I had a hard time believing that nothing could be done and that the future of hip hop would still be dominated by images of women rather than other entities such as voice, activism, or political motivation. I was hoping that there would be some motivation towards change rather than just facts.

insightful, well-written take on misogyny in popular culture
By Louis E. Mcfarland
Sharpley-Whiting's accessible prose style and unique insight make this a must for anyone interested in popular culture, hip hop and rap, women's issues, Black popular culture, and youth. In all my years researching the topics of rap music, hip hop culture, gender and violence, I have never encountered such a unique and much needed approach. While much has been said about the sexist and homophobic nature of rap lyrics, very little has been done to understand how our sexually repressive, yet permissive, society including rap music has negatively affected Black girls and women. Sharpley-Whiting tackles this issue from a variety of angles demonstrating how the misogyny and sexual obsession in rap music impacts girls' and women's sense of self, how sex and rendering women as sexual objects in rap music affects Black women erotic dancers, video dancers, and groupies, and related topics.

Institutions shape every dimension of politics. This volume collects original essays on how such institutions are formed, operated, and changed, both in theory and in practice. Ranging across formal institutions of government such as legislatures, courts, and bureaucracies and intermediary institutions such as labor unions and party systems, the contributors show how these instruments of control give shape to the state, articulate its relationships, and express its legitimacy. Rethinking Political Institutions captures the state of the art in the study of the art of the state.

Drawing on some of the leading scholars in the field, this volume includes essays on issues of social power, public policy and programs, judicial review, and cross-national institutions. Rethinking Political Institutions is an essential addition to the debate on the significance of political institutions, in light of democracy, social change and power.

Bonds of Citizenship: Law and the Labors of Emancipation (America and the Long 19th Century), by Hoang Gia Phan

In this study of literature and law from the Constitutional founding through the Civil War, Hoang Gia Phan demonstrates how American citizenship and civic culture were profoundly transformed by the racialized material histories of free, enslaved, and indentured labor. Bonds of Citizenship illuminates the historical tensions between the legal paradigms of citizenship and contract, and in the emergence of free labor ideology in American culture.  Phan argues that in the age of Emancipation the cultural attributes of free personhood became identified with the legal rights and privileges of the citizen, and that individual freedom thus became identified with the nation-state. He situates the emergence of American citizenship and the American novel within the context of Atlantic slavery and Anglo-American legal culture, placing early American texts by Hector St. John de Crèvecœur, Benjamin Franklin, and Charles Brockden Brown alongside Black Atlantic texts by Ottobah Cugoano and Olaudah Equiano. Beginning with a revisionary reading of the Constitution’s “slavery clauses,” Phan recovers indentured servitude as a transitional form of labor bondage that helped define the key terms of modern U.S. citizenship: mobility, volition, and contract. Bonds of Citizenship demonstrates how citizenship and civic culture were transformed by antebellum debates over slavery, free labor, and national Union, while analyzing the writings of Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville alongside a wide-ranging archive of lesser-known antebellum legal and literary texts in the context of changing conceptions of constitutionalism, property, and contract. Situated at the nexus of literary criticism, legal studies, and labor history, Bonds of Citizenship challenges the founding fiction of a pro-slavery Constitution central to American letters and legal culture.

Review
“Bonds of Citizenship is most insightful in its analyses of the controversies over the Constitution’s stance on slavery and in particular what is often called the ‘fugitive slave clause’ of the Constitution.”-American Literature

"Phan does more than write a revisionist history, reimagining both American literary history and the long nineteenth century; his genealogy and his comparative method give us to understand how deeply entailed an earlier generation’s discussion of slavery might be with current prattle respecting 'original intent.'  An immense contribution to law and literature scholarship."-Stephen Best,University of California, Berkeley

"Phan (Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst) provides an original look at the cultural work of nation building....Readers with a rudimentary understanding of literary and political theory—and an awareness of economic history—will be best positioned to benefit from the author's extensive research into the legal, political, and literary writing of this important era, although many audiences will profit from his synthesis of these materials."-Choice

In the Spirit of a New People: The Cultural Politics of the Chicano Movement (American Literature Initiative), by Randy J. Ontiveros

Reexamining the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, In the Spirit of a New People brings to light new insights about social activism in the twentieth-century and new lessons for progressive politics in the twenty-first. Randy J. Ontiveros explores the ways in which Chicano/a artists and activists used fiction, poetry, visual arts, theater, and other expressive forms to forge a common purpose and to challenge inequality in America. Focusing on cultural politics, Ontiveros reveals neglected stories about the Chicano movement and its impact: how writers used the street press to push back against the network news; how visual artists such as Santa Barraza used painting, installations, and mixed media to challenge racism in mainstream environmentalism; how El Teatro Campesino’s innovative “actos,” or short skits, sought to embody new, more inclusive forms of citizenship; and how Sandra Cisneros and other Chicana novelists broadened the narrative of the Chicano movement. In the Spirit of a New People articulates a fresh understanding of how the Chicano movement contributed to the social and political currents of postwar America, and how the movement remains meaningful today.

Review
“The book’s strengths lie in its reading of cultural texts, especially the visual work of Barraza; performances of El Teatro Campesino; and the writing of Cisneros, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, Enriqueta Vasquez, and others.  Analyses of these varied works offer compelling support for Ontiveros’s larger argument that at least culturally the Chicano movement ‘didn’t die at all.’ Contextualized in a broader history that dates to the Mexican Revolution of 1910, these examples provide persuasive evidence for the movement’s legacy beyond just demographic and electoral politics.”-The Journal of American History

“[…] In the Spirit of a New People succeeds in its argument for recuperating elements of Chicana/o cultural nationalism from the 1960s and the 1970s as it was and continues to be embedded in Chicana/o art as a framework and impetus for contemporary Chicana/o political action in the present.”-MELUS

"Elegantly demonstrates the Chicano movement's irrefutable influence on a politically astute and enduring legacy of expressive culture. Randy J. Ontiveros persuasively argues that movimiento-inspired art and literature offer a crucial dose of historical consciousness required for sustaining struggles for social justice. A game-changing intervention in Chicano/a and American studies, Ontiveros’s book moves us beyond reductionist claims and rehashed debates to reinvigorate Chicano movement scholarship." -Richard T. Rodriguez, author of Next of Kin: The Family in Chicano/a Cultural Politics

"In the Spirit of a New People provides a thoughtful analysis of how the Chicano movement—and social justice struggles more generally—can influence politics and culture."-The Journal of American History
