Authors of Their Lives: The Personal Correspondence of British Immigrants to North America in the Nineteenth Century, by David A. Gerber

2008 United States Postal System’s Rita Lloyd Moroney Award

In the era before airplanes and e-mail, how did immigrants keep in touch with loved ones in their homelands, as well as preserve links with pasts that were rooted in places from which they voluntarily left? Regardless of literacy level, they wrote letters, explains David A. Gerber in this path-breaking study of British immigrants to the U.S. and Canada who wrote and received letters during the nineteenth century.

Scholars have long used immigrant letters as a lens to examine the experiences of immigrant groups and the communities they build in their new homelands. Yet immigrants as individual letter writers have not received significant attention; rather, their letters are often used to add color to narratives informed by other types of sources.

Authors of Their Lives analyzes the cycle of correspondence between immigrants and their homelands, paying particular attention to the role played by letters in reformulating relationships made vulnerable by separation. Letters provided sources of continuity in lives disrupted by movement across vast spaces that disrupted personal identities, which depend on continuity between past and present. Gerber reveals how ordinary artisans, farmers, factory workers, and housewives engaged in correspondence that lasted for years and addressed subjects of the most profound emotional and practical significance.

Review

“David Gerber provides a new reading of the immigrant letter. Though informed by social theory, it is Gerber's astute analysis which provides the reader a rare entree to the psychology of particular immigrants. A unique achievement!”
-Rudolph J. Vecoli,Professor of History, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

“Authors of Their Lives is the definitive study of American and Canadian immigrant letters. David Gerber employs psychology, epistolary scholarship, as well as his superlative capacities as an empathetic reader, to reveal how letters constitute not only a record of immigrant experience, but were an agent in fashioning that experience. Authors of Their Lives is an invaluable contribution to transnational history at the most personal and persuasive level.”
-John R. Gillis, author of Islands of the Mind: How the Human Imagination Created the Atlantic World

“[I]n this excellent study . . . Gerber uses sophisticated social theory — quite elegantly — for a readable and insightful analysis of the immigrants and what migration meant to them. . . . Gerber also breaks new ground by analyzing the ‘rhythm’ of letter writing — how immigrants' writing changed over time and what that reveals about their psychology, emotion, and adjustment. . . . Altogether, Gerber provides a fresh model and another high standard for scholars of American immigration.”
-Journal of American History

“This is a fascinating book. David Gerber carefully analyzes the letter itself to focus on the development of individual identities in the face of migration.”
-Jon Gjerde, author of The Minds of the West: The Ethnocultural Evolution of the Rural Middle West, 1830-1917

“Gerber provides an insightful examination of the role letters play in the shaping of identity. . . . Will certainly help historians to address personal immigrant letters more critically.”
-American Historical Review

South Asia (Current History)From Brand: NYU Press

In recent years the world’s focus on South Asia has increased dramatically. With the events of 9/11, the detonation of atomic weapons by both India and Pakistan, the discovery of an illicit nuclear proliferation network based in Islamabad, regime change in an unstable Afghanistan, and the rise of India as an economic power, global interest in the region has reached perhaps an all-time high. Leading experts analyze the key strategic, political, and economic issues touching on South Asia and its role in the world in the essays that make up this inaugural volume in the Current History Books Series.

Focusing on modern South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, this authoritative volume provides an overview of the events and trends that have rocked this increasingly volatile region over the past decade. Edited and with an introduction by Sumit Ganguly, a leading expert on the region, this volume provides a critical introduction to South Asia. South Asia also contains current maps as well as a “Recent Chronology of Events” that provides a decade’s worth of information on the region, organized by year and by country. This timely and comprehensive collection of essays provides a definitive account of modern South Asia.

"An outstanding contribution to the international debate over breast cancer. Women Confront Cancer not only focuses on exciting new non-conventional treatment options, but allows outspoken women cancer patients to describe their experiences and ordeals in their own words. A landmard in the struggle for patient autonomy."-Ralph Moss, Ph.D., author of "The Cancer Industry"

"Women Confront Cancer offers more than case stories of hope triumphing over despair, more than options, alternatives and resources. Its message about individuality, empowerment and leadership makes it must reading for every woman diagnosed with cancer. Its quiet demand for medical freedom of choice and for a patient-driven shift in oncologic policy should be heard by every professional in the cancer field. If ever there was a time for this book, it is now."-Susan Silberstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education

"Without telling us what we ought to do, these women make it clear what we can do: Remember that miracles do occur and that no one, not even orthodox medicine, has all the answers." -Susun S. Weed, author of "Breast Cancer? Breast Health!, The Wise Woman Way"

Old Info
By S. Turner
While this book has a (C) copyright 2006 date, all the articles were written between 1995 and 2003. Most of them were written in the late 1990's. So much is changing so fast in South Asia that this information is now of limited value. I feel that the 2006 publication date is very misleading. This should have either been published in 2003 or had updated articles to replace the old ones. The articles are typically good, but the book is mis- and out-dated. ST40

Empires and Indigenes: Intercultural Alliance, Imperial Expansion, and Warfare in the Early Modern World (Warfare and Culture)From NYU P

The early modern period (c. 1500–1800) of world history is characterized by the establishment and aggressive expansion of European empires, and warfare between imperial powers and indigenous peoples was a central component of the quest for global dominance. From the Portuguese in Africa to the Russians and Ottomans in Central Asia, empire builders could not avoid military interactions with native populations, and many discovered that imperial expansion was impossible without the cooperation, and, in some cases, alliances with the natives they encountered in the new worlds they sought to rule.

Empires and Indigenes is a sweeping examination of how intercultural interactions between Europeans and indigenous people influenced military choices and strategic action. Ranging from the Muscovites on the western steppe to the French and English in North America, it analyzes how diplomatic and military systems were designed to accommodate the demands and expectations of local peoples, who aided the imperial powers even as they often became subordinated to them. Contributors take on the analytical problem from a variety of levels, from the detailed case studies of the different ways indigenous peoples could be employed, to more comprehensive syntheses and theoretical examinations of diplomatic processes, ethnic soldier mobilization, and the interaction of culture and military technology.

Review
"[T]his is a fascinating group of essays focused on the military side of empire building, a necessary phase before institution building could get underway."-Robert C. Ritchie ,The Historian

"In sum, Empires and Indigenes should be required reading material for individuals interested in early modern empire building."-Rainer Buschmann,H-Net Reviews

“Empires and Indigenes offers a valuable perspective not only on the cross-cultural dimensions of early-modern warfare but also on the differing styles of imperial expansion. As such, this collection is a significant addition to the global history of the period.”-Jeremy Black, author of War: A Short History

“Empire and Indigenes needs to be read by historians, policy analysts, and military experts for important reassessments on intercultural warfare. With measured arguments, the authors challenge and qualify hallowed ‘truths’ of military and imperial history, such as the early modern military revolution or the easy defeats and subjugation of indigenous populations.  This volume will surely mark a shift in how we understand warfare as a complex and contested form of intercultural engagement in empires.” -Elizabeth Mancke,co-editor of The Creation of the British Atlantic World

"Empires and Indigenes is a sweeping examination of how intercultural interactions between Europeans and indigenous people influenced military choices and strategic action."-Settler Colonial Studies Blog

"The range of essays in the collection is truly ambitious, ranging from considerations of Euro-American and Native American ways of war in the Americas to the relation between Europe and the history of war making in South Asia and Africa, to the military histories of Russia's eastern empire and the Ottoman Empire.  Clearly, the definitions employed here for both 'indigenes' and 'empires' are capacious indeed, but the authors track a startling number of analogies among these widely variable contexts."-Brian Yothers,Early American Literature

War's Cultural Intersection
By Fife and Drummer
An interesting series of essays on the military-cultural intersection between colonial empires and the indigenous peoples they warred with (and often alongside) from roughly the 15th to the late 18th centuries. The areas covered are geographically and culturally diverse, from North America to the Pontic Steppe in Russia, and from coastal Angola to India and Brazil.

The Europeans sometimes found that the natives' own military knowledge and tactics worked better in an environment they knew well than the more linear imported tactics of the English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Both colonizer and native adapted accordingly. In the case of Russia, the Muscovites were much more similar in their military culture to the steppe peoples they eventually conquered than one might expect.

The most interesting essays for me were Wayne Lee's "The Military Revolution of Native North America" (the Eastern tribes took to firearms enthusiastically, but their attempt at fort-building in the European style was a blind alley), and Mark Meuwese's "The Tupis and the Dutch-Portuguese Struggle for the Southern Atlantic, 1630-1657" (the powerful Tupis in Brazil saw the Dutch as allies with whom to throw off Portuguese rule).

In each essay and in each geographical area we find the natives were no mean antagonists, and the Europeans (and the Ottomans) were often hampered by logistical problems, difficult terrain, vulnerablity to native diseases, and ocean-spanning distance from their sources of supply and reinforcement. Therefore, colonial conquest was by no means as one-sided as it is usually portrayed, and it often included the active assistance of some of the natives themselves (see Cortez and the Aztecs).

Scholarly in tone. Endnotes are included with each essay. Solid New York University Press hardcover (but no dust jacket). Well-drawn area maps lead off most essays.

Excellently researched. Purchased to read published material by Dr. Lee. While some of the themes about which he spoke in class are in this book there are additional items that provide for a thorough understanding of the topic. Other authors also provide exceptional insight. Highly recommended!

Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film, by Emanuel Levy

A Los Angeles Times Bestseller

The most important development in American culture of the last two decades is the emergence of independent cinema as a viable alternative to Hollywood. Indeed, while Hollywood's studios devote much of their time and energy to churning out big-budget, star-studded event movies, a renegade independent cinema that challenges mainstream fare continues to flourish with strong critical support and loyal audiences.

Cinema of Outsiders is the first and only comprehensive chronicle of contemporary independent movies from the late 1970s up to the present. From the hip, audacious early works of maverick David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, and Spike Lee, to the contemporary Oscar-winning success of indie dynamos, such as the Coen brothers (Fargo), Quentin Tarentino (Pulp Fiction), and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade), Levy describes in a lucid and accessible manner the innovation and diversity of American indies in theme, sensibility, and style.

Documenting the socio-economic, political and artistic forces that led to the rise of American independent film, Cinema of Outsiders depicts the pivotal role of indie guru Robert Redford and his Sundance Film Festival in creating a showcase for indies, the function of film schools in supplying talent, and the continuous tension between indies and Hollywood as two distinct industries with their own structure, finance, talent and audience.

Levy describes the major cycles in the indie film movement: regional cinema, the New York school of film, African-American, Asian American, gay and lesbian, and movies made by women. Based on exhaustive research of over 1,000 movies made between 1977 and 1999, Levy evaluates some 200 quintessential indies, including Choose Me, Stranger Than Paradise, Blood Simple, Blue Velvet, Desperately Seeking Susan, Slacker, Poison, Reservoir Dogs, Gas Food Lodging, Menace II Society, Clerks, In the Company of Men, Chasing Amy, The Apostle, The Opposite of Sex, and Happiness.

Cinema of Outsiders reveals the artistic and political impact of bold and provocative independent movies in displaying the cinema of "outsiders"-the cinema of the "other America."

From Library Journal
As most contemporary moviegoers are aware, the indies (independent films) have been booming recently, with many like Pulp Fiction, Metropolitan, and Boogie Nights becoming major critical and box office hits. Levy (film and sociology, Arizona State Univ. West), a film critic for Variety magazine, first tries to define exactly what distinguishes the indie from a major American studio production and then examines the specific circumstances that have favored the indie boom. But the bulk of the book is a look at the directors or creators of these films and their work, both good and bad, and a survey of the various types of indie films being made. As the author hopes, this engaging look at the indies of the last 22 years will appeal to "educated people who go to the movies and are interested in knowing more about them." Highly recommended for public libraries and subject collections.AMarianne Cawley, Charleston Cty. Lib., SC

Cinema of Outsiders

"CINEMA OF OUTSIDERS: The Rise of American Independent Film"
A BOOK REVIEW by Harvey Karten, film_critic@compuserve.com
Emanuel Levy, "Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film," New York: New York University Press, cl999, 601pp.
Emanuel Levy among those who prefer the challenging, edgy, sometimes outrageous movies that are released outside of the Hollywood studios' network. The author of six books with yet another, a biography of critic Andrew Sarris, in the works, Levy is a senior editor with "Variety" magazine. He does not at any time come right out and declare his partiality to the indies, but his passion for the concept of non-mainstream cinema (or at least for the good ones) surfaces on every page. Ironically, "Variety," the slick trade publication for the entertainment industry which regularly promotes and writes about the biggies, should be the last place Levy wouldembrace as a home. Yet the critic--who
habitually knocks out prescient reviews of the latest pictures using that publication's popular jargon such as "pix," "thesps," and "helmers"--has an overall contempt for the safe, for the movies made strictly to appeal to the lowest common denominator and therefore bring in the big bucks for the studios. This is not to say that he glorifies the entire independent ouevre. Discussing three hundred films albeit not in great depth, Levy gradually unfolds to the reader what he likes and what he does not among indies released from 1977 to the present and has the same disdain for poor quality individualistic films as he has for the blockbusters. He derides the studied, the predictable, the simplistic, the not credible, the subjects which are inadequate for full-length treatment, the charmless, the absent-of-wit--all the deadly sins for which blockbusters are often culpable.
The bulk of the 601-page text is taken up with an encyclopedic survey of indie films released during the past thirty-two years, the sort of scan you can find in most of the popular annuals which capsule-review cinematic output in alphabetical order. Neither alphabetical nor chronological, Levy's book treats the films thematically. Chapters have such titles as "Fathers and Sons," "The New York School of Indies," "The Resurrection of Noir," "Challenging Stereotypes," "The New Gay and Lesbian Cinema," "Female/Feminist Sensibility," and "The New African American Cinema." This body of commentary makes the book a must for public libraries and for the home bookshelves of all who have a passion for thoughtful, cutting-edge movies. While much of what Levy says is duplicated by Leonard Maltin, Roger Ebert, and David Thomson in annuals and studies that review and comment upon the pictures and their makers, Levy's commentary provides a distinctive voice, one which extols the independent movies to a greater degree than
do the other popular critics. I would have preferred that he downplay the laundry list of films in favor of presenting even more detail about trends in current cinema and the effect of these films on the audience and on the previously-ignored segments of the population regularly dealt with by these movies.

Very comprehensive, maybe too much?
By Brian J. Cipperly
This book is quite comprehensive, and appears to be one of the better ones in its genre. It covers a lot of directors and explains the contexts in which they worked quite adequately. The index/timeline features in the back are a nice touch for people doing research.

The only thing I really disliked about this book was the author's tendency to go on and on about a director's particular film--just when you think he's said enough about the movie, a few more paragraphs follow, which after a while one ends up wanting to skip over. I can see where this might be a useful feature, but for me it tended to break up the continuity of the text.

America's Death Penalty: Between Past and PresentFrom NYU Press

Over the past three decades, the United States has embraced the death penalty with tenacious enthusiasm. While most of those countries whose legal systems and cultures are normally compared to the United States have abolished capital punishment, the United States continues to employ this ultimate tool of punishment. The death penalty has achieved an unparalleled prominence in our public life and left an indelible imprint on our politics and culture. It has also provoked intense scholarly debate, much of it devoted to explaining the roots of American exceptionalism.

America’s Death Penalty takes a different approach to the issue by examining the historical and theoretical assumptions that have underpinned the discussion of capital punishment in the United States today. At various times the death penalty has been portrayed as an anachronism, an inheritance, or an innovation, with little reflection on the consequences that flow from the choice of words. This volume represents an effort to restore the sense of capital punishment as a question caught up in history. Edited by leading scholars of crime and justice, these original essays pursue different strategies for unsettling the usual terms of the debate. In particular, the authors use comparative and historical investigations of both Europe and America in order to cast fresh light on familiar questions about the meaning of capital punishment. This volume is essential reading for understanding the death penalty in America.

Review
“Reading this book is like attending a highly charged graduate-level symposium. The essays are fascinating and well written but assume familiarity with the material... What distinguishes this volume is the contributing editors’ refusal to accept conventional analysis of the death penalty... Academics and serious scholars of the death penalty will appreciate this innovative approach. A worthy addition to the historical analysis of the death penalty for knowledgeable readers.”-Library Journal

“[F]ascinating and well written…A worthy addition to the historical analysis of the death penalty”

-Library Journal

"This is a book that gives profoundly important answers, but not easy ones. Six leading figures discuss the American death penalty in this volume. All six leave us wondering whether the simple stories we like to tell can possibly be adequate."

-James Q. Whitman,Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative and Foreign Law, Yale Law School

"An interesting collection that contributes to the further academic debate on capital punishment."-Jurgen Martschukat,The Journal of American History

“If I were asked to recommend a single book that puts the vexed and emotionally charged question of the death penalty into an intelligible historical and contemporary political perspective it would be this one. The introduction sets the stage beautifully and the essays that follow allow readers to come at the problem from a variety of mutually reinforcing perspectives. It is a model for intellectually rigorous scholarship on a morally exigent matter.”

-Thomas W. Laqueur,Professor of History, University of California, Berkeley

Drugs in America: A Documentary HistoryFrom Brand: NYU Press

Most Americans would be surprised to learn that large quantities of beer were brought over on the Puritan ships and that the hallowed Puritans were fond of drink. How many today realize that hemp was once one of our most lucrative cash cropsencouraged by President John Adams and promoted by the Agriculture department? Or that cocaine, opium and heroin had several waves of popularity in this century and the last? Drugs and alcohol have been with us from the start. So have attempts to control or eliminate their use. In the first anthology of its kind, renowned drug policy expert David Musto chronicles the rise and fall and rise again of the most popular mind altering substances in the Unites States: alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and opiates.

In the section on alcohol we hear the Reverend Lyman Beecher, prominent radical abolitionist and father of Harriet Beecher Stowe, thundering against the evils of alcoholin 1826. We read medical documents that show how the first stirrings of concern about about what is now termed fetal-alcohol syndrome in 1910 turned public opinion against drinking and helped move the country toward Prohibition. The sections on illegal drugs contain surprises as well.

With accessible, jargon-free introductions this anthology puts drug and alcohol use at the center of American culture. At this critical point in the "war on drugs" if we do not appreciate our drug and alcohol history we may become captive to the powerful emotions that lead to draconian repression, exaggeration, or apathy and silence.

Another Country: Queer Anti-Urbanism (Sexual Cultures), by Scott Herring

The metropolis has been the near exclusive focus of queer scholars and queer cultures in America. Asking us to look beyond the cities on the coasts, Scott Herring draws a new map, tracking how rural queers have responded to this myopic mindset. Interweaving a wide range of disciplines—art, media, literature, performance, and fashion studies—he develops an extended critique of how metronormativity saturates LGBTQ politics, artwork, and criticism. To counter this ideal, he offers a vibrant theory of queer anti-urbanism that refuses to dismiss the rural as a cultural backwater.

Impassioned and provocative, Another Country expands the possibilities of queer studies beyond its city limits. Herring leads his readers from faeries in the rural Midwest to photographs of white supremacists in the deep South, from Roland Barthes’s obsession with Parisian fashion to a graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel set in the Appalachian Mountains, and from cubist paintings in Lancaster County to lesbian separatist communes on the northern California coast. The result is an entirely original account of how queer studies can—and should—get to another country.

Review
"Herring has a distinctive voice, elegant with a sharp wit...a book that is as beautiful as it is brilliant." -The Journal of American History

“Writers, artists, and activists have worked throughout the past century to imagine and materialize sustainable queer lives everywhere from Oregon to Pennsylvania, from Iowa to Alabama. Herring provides the definitive account of the myriad ways that LGBT people have constituted non-urban sites as vibrant and sexy spaces of resistance to hetero- and homonormativity, to compulsory consumerism, and to entrenched hierarchies of race, class, gender, and ability. In so doing, Another Country redraws the map of contemporary queer studies.”

-Robert McRuer, author of Crip Theory: Cultural Signs of Queerness and Disability

"Smart and edgy...the value of this book lies principally in the provocative conceptual tools it offers to articulate the roadblocks and raptures of queer migrations."-Amin Ghaziani,American Journal of Sociology

“Scott Herring presents an exquisitely detailed road atlas of the complicated intersection between topography and destiny.”

-Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home and Dykes to Watch Out For

"In Another Country, Herring responds to gaps that urban-centered studies have left opened in queer histories . . . Herring's work evidences a fierce commitment to existing queer metropolitan-migration narratives, favoring the backward, rustic and unfashionable, and embracing these stereotypes for their own subversively disruptive potentials. His quality content analysis and skillful ability to anticipate counter-arguments and avoid intellectual pitfalls keeps the reader on her toes."-Jaime Cantrell,Feminist Formations

“Reading across the genres of literature, print and visual media, photography, and fashion, Scott Herring not only complicates the queer’s move from rural to urban space, but also the ways in which queers in ‘othered’ spaces enact an anti-urbanism through their own ‘rural stylistics.’ Another Country is fierce!”

-E. Patrick Johnson, author of Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South; An Oral History

Scott Herring teaches in the Department of English at Indiana University. He is the author of Queering the Underworld: Slumming, Literature, and the Undoing of Lesbian and Gay History.

Metronormative Screed
By Edward Olivera
Open any of the gay glossies (the Advocate, Genre, Out, etc.) and you'll find page after page aimed specifically at your toned, urban, white, affluent, and above all young gay man. I have no problem with this other than the feeling that the contents of these magazines have always given me the sense that I exist in some other gay world, one where men are not so toned, who are overweight, rural, financially struggling, of color, and aging. I've waited a long time for a book like Another Country to be written. It is a long meditation on the assumptions made, not among heterosexuals but within the gay "community" (and I don't subscribe to any idea of some monolithic subculture we all exist in; this is indeed the biggest part of the problem) that we all share the same style of living.

Scott Herring attacks the dictates of commercial gay culture through a thorough and lively investigation of artistic and literary and expressions of anti-urban alternatives to the metronormative narrative. The book begins with a meditation on the difficulty of defining the difference between the urban and the rural, how there is no simple divide geographic or otherwise that assists us in establishing this difference other than the dismissive and ugly terms of approbation assigned to the non-metropolitan: hick, hayseed, and worse.

Herring takes a quote by gay literary icon Edmund White, about how "New York gays are justifiably proud of their status as taste-makers for the rest of the country," and reacts angrily: "While his snarky words may aim at the sexual assimilation of gay males across the lower forty-eight, they expand this minoritization into a universalizing model that believes itself 'distinctive of all homosexual persons.'" Herring doesn't propose, however, to reinforce the urban-rural binary but "is invested in tracking how non-metronormative subjects negotiated and upset this binary as it continues to inform queer social spaces..."

Herring's study takes a brief historical look at two writers (Willa Cather and James Weldon Johnson) and an artist (Charles Demuth) in order to examine the early twentieth-century roots of this phenomenon and then a more recent historical look at the immediate post-Stonewall reaction to metronormativity that was establishing itself in the early 1970s through the periodicals RFD and Country Women and comparing them to the newly emergent Advocate. This is well documented research and fascinating to trace the development of these early polarizations.

There is an arc being traced here, one that starts in the early twentieth century and continues through post-Stonewall history and whose ascendency and dominance has defined for many queer culture. The second half of the book examines more recent expressive reactions to metronormativity including the controversial photography of Micheal Mead's Southern subjects and the art of Alison Bechdel whose graphic narrative Fun Home is received with a warmth of critical understanding that is the book's apotheosis.

Caring Across Generations: The Linked Lives of Korean American Families, by Grace J. Yoo, Barbara W. Kim

2015 Asia and Asian America Section Best Book Award from the American Sociological Association

More than 1.3 million Korean Americans live in the United States, the majority of them foreign-born immigrants and their children, the so-called 1.5 and second generations. While many sons and daughters of Korean immigrants outwardly conform to the stereotyped image of the upwardly mobile, highly educated super-achiever, the realities and challenges that the children of Korean immigrants face in their adult lives as their immigrant parents grow older and confront health issues that are far more complex. In Caring Across Generations, Grace J. Yoo and Barbara W. Kim explore how earlier experiences helping immigrant parents navigate American society have prepared Korean American children for negotiating and redefining the traditional gender norms, close familial relationships, and cultural practices that their parents expect them to adhere to as they reach adulthood. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 137 second and 1.5 generation Korean Americans, Yoo & Kim explore issues such as their childhood experiences, their interpreted cultural traditions and values in regards to care and respect for the elderly, their attitudes and values regarding care for aging parents, their observations of parents facing retirement and life changes, and their experiences with providing care when parents face illness or the prospects of dying. A unique study at the intersection of immigration and aging, Caring Across Generations provides a new look at the linked lives of immigrants and their families, and the struggles and triumphs that they face over many generations.

Review
"This well-written, sensitive work provides insight into the family lives of one of the largest Asian American groups."-Choice

“[…] [T]his is an interesting, empirically rich book.  It will be a valuable addition for students of immigration, family and household, race and ethnicity, culture, social work/welfare, and life course analysis.” -Society

"This innovative qualitative study poignantly reveals the complex socio-historical and -ecological forces that impact self-perceptions and shape ethnic and cultural identities of Korean immigrant children. The authors provide, through the voices of their respondents, the difficulties and tensions created as children, throughout their lives, struggle to navigate the emotional bonds between their natal families their own nuclear families, to forge their dual identities as Korean-Americans. The story is universal for immigrants, but rarely told along the life course as Yoo and Kim have so deftly presented. The struggle to identify, straddle and eventually formulate a bicultural identity and reconcile conflicting cultural values and norms between the host and native culture is treacherous, painful, and inevitable. The individual stories of the participants powerfully illustrate the diversity of strategies individuals use to navigate these transitional passages – beginning with the power shift of helping their limited English speaking parents maneuver through the American society, finding their own sense of identities as Korean Americans, and struggling to choose which mix of values to transmit to their children and still honor their immigrant parents, who sacrificed so much to give the respondents access to the 'American Dream'. This book is an important resource for academics and practitioners working in immigration issues, social service agencies, and mental and medical health. It is also a powerful resource for all immigrant populations – to help put their experiences in a larger context as they adapt to U.S. society."-Marjorie Kagawa-Singer,Professor of Public Health and Asian-American Studies, University of California at Los Angeles

"To be able to look through a lens at how a community matures in a space not native is a precious opportunity. This writing by Yoo and Kim gives focus and voice to a part of Korean American reality that is well known within and completely unseen without. These stories are an integration of Korean tradition, American dreams and demands, and human passages through life—wonderful, warm, and true."-Angela Oh,Activist and Chancellor's Fellow at University of California, Irvine

Extravagant Abjection: Blackness, Power, and Sexuality in the African American Literary Imagination (Sexual Cultures), by Darieck Scott

2012 Winner of the Alan Bray Memorial Book Award presented by the Modern Language Association

Challenging the conception of empowerment associated with the Black Power Movement and its political and intellectual legacies in the present, Darieck Scott contends that power can be found not only in martial resistance, but, surprisingly, where the black body has been inflicted with harm or humiliation.

Theorizing the relation between blackness and abjection by foregrounding often neglected depictions of the sexual exploitation and humiliation of men in works by James Weldon Johnson, Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka, and Samuel R. Delany, Extravagant Abjection asks: If we’re racialized through domination and abjection, what is the political, personal, and psychological potential in racialization-through-abjection? Using the figure of male rape as a lens through which to examine this question, Scott argues that blackness in relation to abjection endows its inheritors with a form of counter-intuitive power—indeed, what can be thought of as a revised notion of black power. This power is found at the point at which ego, identity, body, race, and nation seem to reveal themselves as utterly penetrated and compromised, without defensible boundary. Yet in Extravagant Abjection, “power” assumes an unexpected and paradoxical form.

In arguing that blackness endows its inheritors with a surprising form of counter–intuitive power—as a resource for the political present—found at the very point of violation, Extravagant Abjection enriches our understanding of the construction of black male identity.

Review

“According to Darieck Scott, the awful legacies of racial difference and debasement are not inevitable. And so in Extravagant Abjection, he deftly paves the way for new understandings of the history and culture of black power and violence. His work is theoretically exciting and sophisticated, offering invaluable lessons: that the violent pressure of black history—the pressure of its terrible subordination—can be relieved, often in unexpected ways. Scott helps us see, even in the most humiliating and violent of scenes, an entire horizon of other, sometimes pleasurable, possibilities of resistance.”

-Michael Cobb, author of God Hates Fags

"[Scott] arrives at the provocative notion that it is the black body's status as brought into being by and through past trauma that makes it best positioned to tap the inherent powers of abjection."-American Literature

“A powerful theoretical statement in the emerging field of black queer studies, Extravagant Abjection makes the bold claim that it is necessary to work through and not simply to ‘white wash’ the political, social, ideological, and psychological consequences of what Darieck Scott names ‘black abjection.’ Building upon the insights of the more articulate practitioners of bondage and submission, Sadism and Masochism, Scott’s readings of key texts in twentieth century Black American literature are at once sophisticated, provocative, creative, and indeed titillating. This book will surely become a ‘dark’ classic.”

-Robert Reid-Pharr,author of Once You Go Black
