Leg over Leg: Volume Two (Library of Arabic Literature), by Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq

Leg over Leg recounts the life, from birth to middle age, of ‘the Fariyaq,’ alter ego of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, a pivotal figure in the intellectual and literary history of the modern Arab world. The always edifying and often hilarious adventures of the Fariyaq, as he moves from his native Lebanon to Egypt, Malta, Tunis, England and France, provide the author with grist for wide-ranging discussions of the intellectual and social issues of his time, including the ignorance and corruption of the Lebanese religious and secular establishments, freedom of conscience, women’s rights, sexual relationships between men and women, the manners and customs of Europeans and Middle Easterners, and the differences between contemporary European and Arabic literatures. Al-Shidyaq also celebrates the genius and beauty of the classical Arabic language. Akin to Sterne and Rabelais in his satirical outlook and technical inventiveness, al-Shidyaq produced in Leg Over Leg a work that is unique and unclassifiable. It was initially widely condemned for its attacks on authority, its religious skepticism, and its “obscenity,” and later editions were often abridged. This is the first English translation of the work and reproduces the original Arabic text, published under the author’s supervision in 1855.

Review
"Its contemporaneity is astonishing... It would be doing Leg Over Leg a massive disservice to not make it clear how funny it is. This is a book that for all its challenges, all its insight into humanity, all its place in history, had me regularly laughing out loud."-Music and Literature

"Al-Shidyaq, born in Lebanon in the early years of the nineteenth century, was a Zelig of the Arabic literary world, and his Leg Over Leg is a bawdy, hilarious, epically word-obsessed, and unclassifiable book, which has never been translated into English before…"

-MobyLives

"...Leg Over Leg by the Lebanese intellectual Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, [has] long been held to be untranslatable and so [is] appearing, in [its] entirety, in English for the first time."-Lydia Wilson,Times Literary Supplement

"It is not too early to state that the publication of this work, in this edition, is a game-changer. This is a foundational work of modern Arabic literature and its publication in English is long overdue — but given how it is presented here, it was perhaps worth the wait. This edition, with helpful endnotes, the original Arabic text, and in a translation that both reads well and appears to closely mirror the original, seems, in almost every way, ideal… I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this is the most important literary publication of a translation into English, in terms of literary history and our understanding of it, in years."

-The Complete Review

"Humphrey Davies’ translation, published in four dual-language volumes, is a triumph. He skillfully renders punning, rhyming prose without breaking the spell… Leg Over Leg stands out for both its stylistic brazenness and the excellence of the translation. With this bilingual edition, the Library of Arabic Literature helps fill a large cultural gap and alters our view of Arabic literature and the formal trajectory of the novel outside the West. Any reader for whom the term ‘world literature’ is more than an empty platitude must read Humphrey Davies's translation."-John Yargo,Los Angeles Review of Books

"We're having a particularly good season for literary discoveries from the past, with recent publications of Volumes 1 and 2 of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq's 'Leg Over Leg' (1855)..."-Martin Riker,New York Times Book Review

"Humphrey Davies’s masterful translation makes accessible this unique and fascinating work, deserving of wider recognition and study […] The translation adroitly and sympathetically captures the linguistic exuberance and literary inventiveness of the original."-Banipal Magazine

“The heroic achievement of award-winning translator Humphrey Davies marks the first ever English translation of this pivotal work… An accessible, informative, and highly entertaining read.”

-Banipal Magazine

A Masterpiece
By Roberto Bolaño
A masterpiece of modern Arabic literature, and probably the first postmodern novel ever written in Arabic and published in 1855, even before the novel itself was established as a literary genre in the Levant and Egypt, and a work believed to be utterly untranslatable, is now available in a masterful English translation, which is an absolute masterpiece by itself. What Humphrey Davies created, in this bilingual 4-volume set, is nothing but miraculous. To the best of my judgment, it is the best translation ever from Arabic literature, and it's bound to do to Al-Shidyaq's masterpiece what Galland's French translation did to the Book of Thousand and One Nights three hundred years ago - gradually consume the original and replace it as the standard reference for al-Shidyaq's fans. This system doesn't have enough starts to measure Davies's grand achievement.

Tours That Bind: Diaspora, Pilgrimage, and Israeli Birthright Tourism, by Shaul Kelner

Winner, 2010 Association for Jewish Studies Jordan Schnitzer Book Award
2011 Honorable Mention for the American Sociological Association Culture Section's Mary Douglas Prize for Best Book

Since 1999 hundreds of thousands of young American Jews have visited Israel on an all-expense-paid 10-day pilgrimage-tour known as Birthright Israel. The most elaborate of the state-supported homeland tours that are cropping up all over the world, this tour seeks to foster in the American Jewish diaspora a lifelong sense of attachment to Israel based on ethnic and political solidarity. Over a half-billion dollars (and counting) has been spent cultivating this attachment, and despite 9/11 and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict the tours are still going strong.

Based on over seven years of first-hand observation in modern day Israel, Shaul Kelner provides an on-the-ground look at this hotly debated and widely emulated use of tourism to forge transnational ties. We ride the bus, attend speeches with the Prime Minister, hang out in the hotel bar, and get a fresh feel for young American Jewish identity and contemporary Israel. We see how tourism's dynamism coupled with the vibrant human agency of the individual tourists inevitably complicate tour leaders' efforts to rein tourism in and bring it under control. By looking at the broader meaning of tourism, Kelner brings to light the contradictions inherent in the tours and the ways that people understandtheir relationship to place both materially and symbolically. Rich in detail, engagingly written, and sensitive to the complexities of modern travel and modern diaspora Jewishness, Tours that Bind offers a new way of thinking about tourism as a way through which people develop understandings of place, society, and self.

Review
"Kelner provides vivid descriptions, conversations, and analyses resulting from his experiences on multiple Taglit trips, his involvement wiht the Brandeis evaluations, and his own studious academic work."-Howard M. Weisband,Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs

"Kelner lucidly lays out evolving conceptual structures in the field of diasporic homeland tourism, illuminating a spectrum of intellectual trends, and using them both to enrich nuanced understandings of the larger significance of the Israel trip in contemporary Jewish life and to portray Israel trips as part of "broader transnational trends that are gaining momentum worldwide."-Sylvia Barack Fishman,H-Net Reviews

“Tours that Bind is an exceptional work. Shaul Kelner offers one of the finest social scientific studies of contemporary Jewish life in a generation.”
-Riv-Ellen Prell, author of Fighting to Become Americans: Jews, Gender and the Anxiety of Assimilation

“Tours that Bind . . . serve[s] up some fascinating insights into one of the most daring and effective social experiments of the modern Jewish Diaspora.”
-The Jerusalem Post

“After several years of serious scholarship, Kelner concludes that tourism is the great equalizer, an opportunity for institutions to compete for the ability to represent a people.Though not the first book to explore Birthright’s impact, Tours That Bind approaches the subject academically, analyzing how Israel co-opts the Jewish diaspora to strengthen its nation-state.”-Jewish Book World

“Kelner, assistant professor of sociology and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University, has written an original and persuasive account of the ways in which tourism has evolved into an important means for the creation of transnational identities and commitments. Using Birthright tours to Israel as his example, Kelner offers new ways to think about place, society, and self.”-Society (Social Science and Modern Society)

“The best book to date on diaspora tourism. Kelner sweeps away the cobwebs that have clouded the relationship between young American Jews and the state of Israel. Rich description, subtle theory, and jargon-free writing make this book a joy to read. A major contribution to the literature on tourism and Jewish studies.”
-Edward M. Bruner, author of Culture on Tour: Ethnographies of Travel

"Tours That Bind is must reading for those who work on homeland/diaspora relations. Ditto for those who research tourism in all its modalities."

-Contemporary Sociology: A Journal of Reviews

“...[O]ffers some intriguing insights into a phenomenon of considerable importance in the American Jewish community.”
-Adam Kirsch,Tablet Magazine

“Drawing mainly on his own participant-observation experiences, Kelner situates the program in a context of political tourism, giving us new tools with which to understand the visceral, emotional and cognitive impacts on the participants. This provides a sophisticated lens through which to analyze what the Birthright program, and others like it, does, how it accomplishes its goals, what those goals are and why the mechanisms used may also limit its impact.”
-Harriet Hartman,The Foreward

“This fascinating, carefully researched study focuses on a specific kind of tourism... the Israeli Taglit-Birthright program... This study is insightful, rich in data, and exceptionally well informed. While the subject focus is unique, the volume contributes broadly to understanding pilgrimage and tourism, youth culture, and Israel-diaspora relations... Highly recommended.”-CHOICE

"In analyzing tourism as a potent but imprecise tool for transnational political socialization, Kelner makes an important contributiong to scholarship on tourism, transnationalism, and diaspora."-Ben Brazil,Sociology of Religion

"If sociology is an art form, Shaul Kelner is a master artist." -Sociological Forum

"A remarkable collection of scholarly essays, philosophical discussions, and ethical arguments concerning reproductive choices."
—Choice

It seems as if every week there is a new case involving reproductive technologies that raises provocative, often painful questions: What policies should be followed by centers that preserve human embryos? Are such innovations as Norplant improvements over established methods of contraception? Should R.U. 486 be available in the U.S.? Is prenatal diagnosis an ethically acceptable step to limiting the number of disabled people?

These are just some of the vital questions explored in this timely work which offers incisive analysis of the plethora of issues raised by advances in reproductive medicine. The book's major section cover abortion, contraception, cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, surrogate motherhood, and psychosocial issues of in-vitro fertilization.

In each section, introductory essays by recognized authorities such as Elizabeth Bartholet and Andrea L. Bonnicksen are followed by critical articles by professionals in such fields as women's health, medicine, biology, sociology, politics, and philosophy. In assessing a technology, the authors present well-argued analyses of problems created by that technology, including views from advocates and practitioners that raise attendant ethical and practical issues.

Review
This is a pathbreaking study, filling a major gap in our understanding of the way the wounds of war were inscribed on women's lives for decades after the Great War. Essential reading for all those drawn in increasing numbers to the Ur-catastrophe of the 20th century.-Jay Winter,

Moving seamlessly from comparative history to transnational history, this book offers a new model of scholarly analysis. It demonstrates the vitality of the new transnational movement in historical studies and shows why women's history is in the vanguard of that movement.-Kathryn Kish Sklar,

In this insightful and well-researched study, Erika Kuhlman refocuses our analytical gaze at the Great War through the lens of widows' views and experiences and by examining how nation-states attempted to use widows to militarize and nationalize the war and postwar years. Widows found empty promises, insufficient support and a less-than reciprocal citizenship from nations eager to cast them as symbols of national sacrifice and proper womanhood. Some cooperated with national plans but others challenged state-sponsored programs and definitions of their womanhood and citizenship. Some transcended the boundaries of the nation-state by identifying with other women as widows through transnational identities and activism. A particular strength of Kuhlman's work is her comparative analysis of widowhood and the Great War across national experiences and her identification of the ways that widowhood became a catalyst for some women to challenge nationalism and militarism, a process that continues

The Wrongs of the Right: Language, Race, and the Republican Party in the Age of Obama, by Matthew W. Hughey, Gregory S. Parks

In The Wrongs of the Right, Matthew W. Hughey and Gregory S. Parks set postracial claims into relief against a background of pre- and post-election racial animus directed at President Obama, his administration, and African Americans. They show how the political Right deploys racial fears, coded language and implicit bias to express and build opposition to the Obama administration. Racial meanings are reservoirs rich in political currency, and the race card remains a potent resource for othering the first black president in a context rife with Nativism, xenophobia, white racial fatigue, and serious racial inequality.

Review
"A valuable contribution in understanding the implications and interplay of race and politics in contemporary America. The presidency of America’s first African-American president is historic, with deep implications, and has taken some turns which reflect, not always well, on America dealing with its enduring issues of race. . . . Powerful and well done."-John Dombrink,University of California, Irvine

"A dissection of the language of the far right, showing the continued, although masked, biases inherent in their message. After a quick history of civil rights and racist attitudes, Hughey (Sociology/Univ. of Conn.; The White Savior Film: Content, Critics, and Consumption, 2014, etc.) and Parks (Law/Wake Forest Univ.; co-editor: Alpha Phi Alpha: A Legacy of Greatness, the Demands of Transcendence, 2011, etc.) show the process that continues the message while avoiding political incorrectness. There are four dimensions at play: black dysfunction, white patriotism, white paternalism and white victimhood. The authors show how these dimensions have grown sociologically and legally over the years, especially since the election of the first black president, Barack Obama. The “Southern strategy” was a child of the ultraconservative Dixiecrats in response to Harry Truman’s civil rights program. They laid the groundwork for the advent of the tea party, birthers and the radical right. All of these groups exhibit elements of racism and are anti-immigrant, pro-gun, anti-deficit, anti-Semitic and pro-religion in government. Hughey and Parks demonstrate the different ways in which outright hostility can be masked by implicit racial biases and coded words and phrases—e.g., welfare queen, inner city, states’ rights, entitlement society, welfare state and liberal bias. Decrying Obama as the affirmative action president, the disrespect of journalists and talking heads like Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh, as well as the use of dehumanizing symbols are all methods of this so-called principled conservatism, a term the authors reject outright—'the banner of ‘post-racialism’ is devoid of ethical currency.' Many of the groups the authors investigate will find further fodder for their tirades, and liberals will doubtless get angry, but all should learn that there’s a limit to the insults American intelligence will tolerate."-Kirkus

“The book provides a succinct summary of the historic ebb and flow of racism in US politics. The authors reveal the use of race as a political incendiary by the two primary parties and clearly illustrate the use of the four premises, previously mentioned, as they relate to the discourse surrounding President Obama’s campaign, election, and tenure. Summing Up: Highly Recommended.”-Choice

"Hughey and Parks attempt to demonstrate that in a supposedly 'post-racial' society, our politics are permeated in both conscious and unconscious ways by the message that only whiteness equates to authentic Americanism . . . [I]t is hard to argue with most of what the authors have to say."-Library Journal

“This exhaustive assessment of the political Right’s exploitation of entrenched racial bias in the U.S. is essential reading for students and scholars of the presidency. The Wrongs of the Right blends convincing data with real world examples, and is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate courses.”-Caroline Heldman,Occidental College

"Covers very timely and important issues regarding racial and electoral politics in America. . . . Commentators and pundits whose job it is to make sense of contemporary politics and interested citizens will all want a book like this. It is scholarly and rigorous but very readable for a lay audience. In my mind, all books should try to attain this balance."-Melanye Price,Rutgers University

Imagined Human Beings: A Psychological Approach to Character and Conflict in Literature (Literature & Psychoanalysis), by Bernard Jay Pari

One of literature's greatest gifts is its portrayal of realistically drawn characters--human beings in whom we can recognize motivations and emotions. In Imagined Human Beings, Bernard J. Paris explores the inner conflicts of some of literature's most famous characters, using Karen Horney's psychoanalytic theories to understand the behavior of these characters as we would the behavior of real people.

When realistically drawn characters are understood in psychological terms, they tend to escape their roles in the plot and thus subvert the view of them advanced by the author. A Horneyan approach both alerts us to conflicts between plot and characterization, rhetoric and mimesis, and helps us understand the forces in the author's personalty that generate them. The Horneyan model can make sense of thematic inconsistencies by seeing them as the product of the author's inner divisions. Paris uses this approach to explore a wide range of texts, including Antigone, "The Clerk's Tale," The Merchant of Venice, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Wuthering Heights, Madame Bovary, The Awakening, and The End of the Road.

Review

”This is literary criticism at its most perceptive. Theory is subservient to a deeply engaged reading of works Professor Paris clearly loves. To read his analysis of Emma Bovary or Hedda Gabler is to gain an enriched insight into characters whom we thought we knew so well.”

-Phyllis Grosskurth, author of Byron, The Flawed Angel

Reflections: The Life and Writings of a Young Blind Woman in Post-Revolutionary France (The History of Disability), by Therese-Adèl

In the 1820s, several years before Braille was invented, Therese-Adele Husson, a young blind woman from provincial France, wrote an audacious manifesto about her life, French society, and her hopes for the future. Through extensive research and scholarly detective work, authors Catherine Kudlick and Zina Weygand have rescued this intriguing woman and the remarkable story of her life and tragic death from obscurity, giving readers a rare look into a world recorded by an unlikely historical figure.

Reflections is one of the earliest recorded manifestations of group solidarity among people with the same disability, advocating self-sufficiency and independence on the part of blind people, encouraging education for all blind children, and exploring gender roles for both men and women. Resolutely defying the sense of "otherness" which pervades discourse about the disabled, Husson instead convinces us that that blindness offers a fresh and important perspective on both history and ourselves.

In rescuing this important historical account and recreating the life of an obscure but potent figure, Weygand and Kudlick have awakened a perspective that transcends time and which, ultimately, remaps our inherent ideas of physical sensibility

From Publishers Weekly
While glancing through the archives of Paris's Quinze-Vingts Hospital, one of the few schools for blind people in the first half of the 19th century, scholars Kudlick and Weygand came across a fascinating manuscript that had gone unread for more than 175 years. It was a petition for lodging by Husson, a 22-year-old blind woman, to the director of the hospital. Writing with insight, clarity and tenderness, Husson details her experience: the difficulty of eating with guests, the joy of feeling sun on her face, her delight at being able to distinguish percale from chiffon with only a glancing touch. Although Husson wrote in a markedly different time, and some of her advice is charmingly outdated (e.g., all blind youngsters should avoid Voltaire and Rousseau to prevent "overexcited feelings"), the simplicity of most of her observations and her overwhelming sincerity are timeless: "every [flower] that has a sweet odor introduces a feeling into our souls that resembles them." Kudlick and Weygand discuss Husson's later life and novels to give a fuller picture of the young woman, then supply a brief but fascinating glimpse into the role of women, religion, disability and notions of the self in early 19th-century France. As well as discussing the social mores of the time, the authors also plumb the depths of Husson's fiction for additional insight into her perspective specifically and into the experience of blind people generally. Their detective work in finding Husson's novels (published under a pen name) and other early writings on disability is notable and provides a useful background for this valuable work of early feminism and disability studies. 8 b&w illus.

From Library Journal
Kudlick (history, Univ. of California, Davis; Cholera in Post-Revolutionary Paris) and Weygand, a researcher in Paris and author of numerous articles on the history of the blind, translate and comment upon this essay by a blind French woman. Husson (1803-1831) wrote the essay for an admissions application to a prestigious school for the blind, and it was stored in the school's basement until being discovered by Kudlick and Weygand. Offering insight into the compelling history of people with disabilities, this is one of the earliest accounts written by someone with an actual disability rather than by an observer or educator. It is also one of the earliest records of solidarity among blind people, advocating self-sufficiency and independence as well as education for blind children. Husson's essay also reveals aspects of gender roles of the time. In addition to the essay, the book provides historical context and biographical details, including Husson's secret identity as a prolific author, her marriage, and her early death by fire. Recommended for history, women's studies, and disability history collections. Mary Salony, West Virginia Northern Community Coll., Wheeling

From Aesthetics to Young Adult, an impressive, multidisciplinary cast of scholars explores the vocabulary central to the study of children's literature.

Following the growth of his or her word, each author traces its branching uses and meanings, often into unfamiliar disciplinary territories: Award-winning novelist Philip Pullman writes about Intentionality, Education expert Margaret Meek Spencer addresses Reading, literary scholar Peter Hunt historicizes Children’s Literature, Psychologist Hugh Crago examines Story, librarian and founder of the influential Child_Lit litserv Michael Joseph investigates Liminality. The scope, clarity, and interdisciplinary play between concepts make this collection essential reading for all scholars in the field. In the spirit of Raymond Williams’ seminal Keywords, this book is a snapshot of a vocabulary of children’s literature that is changing, expanding, and ever unfinished.

Review
"This book presents 49 thoughtful essays based on various concepts pertaining to children's literature, including genres, literary theories, and the history of children's literature...This volume will be very useful, especially for colleges and universities with children's literature programs. Highly recommended." -J. Stevens,Choice

"Even the most sophisticated scholars will enjoy seeing how their colleagues achieve the feat of crafting such delicious distillations within the given space constraints. This book is a monumental achievement."-Claudia Mills,Children's Literature Association

“By distilling the complex uses of its core terms, the contributors to Keywords for Children's Literature have produced an indispensable handbook for scholars in this dynamic field.”-Donald E. Pease, author of Theodor SEUSS Geisel

"Overall, this volume succeeds quite well in focusing attention on how we discuss children's literature. The 49 essays are models of thoughtful inquiry into words we frequently use, often without considering how they have been transformed over time." -Myra Zarnowski,Teachers College Record

“Keywords for Children's Literature demonstrates how sophisticated the critical approaches to the burgeoning field of children's literature have become. Not only do the essays on keywords, written by some of the most capable professors in the field, elaborate important concepts in the history of children's literature, but they cover significant cultural debates and discussions. This superb volume of scholarship demonstrates—definitively—that adult literature cannot be understood without grasping its roots in children's literature.” -Jack Zipes,University of Minnesota

Excellent Book!
By Annette Wannamaker
Keywords for Children's Literature is a must for anyone interested in current scholarship about literature written for children and adolescents. Keywords is less a handbook or encyclopedia, than it is a provocative exercise in working through some of the more difficult, contested and slippery concepts (identity, empire, childhood, and innocence, to list a few) that have been at the center of debates among teachers, scholars, writers and students of children's literature for decades.

It's always a dangerous prospect to put together a collection of key terms important to any field of study: there are bound to be disagreements about which terms are included or excluded and about the ways in which these terms are defined. Keywords avoids these pitfalls, though, by including a broad diversity of keywords and contributors and by highlighting the multiple and contested meanings of each term. Each contributor carefully examines the history of their keyword and the ways in which certain meanings and debates over these meanings have shaped our field of study.

I highly recommend this collection for anyone who is serious about the study of children's literature.

This book is complete B.S and was not needed in my case. I took a Children's lit class online and the chapters in this book did not align with topics in the class. I am not sure if it's the book or the poor instructor, but this book was unnecessary for me to purchase - as I never used it. Waste of money, you can google keywords! Had I been smart, I would have rented it!

Urban Girls Revisited: Building StrengthsFrom NYU Press

Urban Girls, published in 1996, was one of the first volumes to showcase the lives of girls growing up in contexts of urban poverty and sometimes racism and violence. It spoke directly to young women who, often for the first time, were seeing their own stories and those of their friends explained in the materials they were asked to read. The volume has helped to shape the way in which we study girls and understand their development over the past decade.

Urban Girls Revisited explores the diversity of urban adolescent girls' development and the sources of support and resilience that help them to build the foundations of strength that they need as they enter adulthood. Urban girls are frequently marginalized by poverty, ethnic discrimination, and stereotypes suggesting that they have deficits compared to their peers. In fact, urban girls do often“grow up fast,” taking on multiple adult roles and responsibilities in contexts of high levels of adversities. Yet a majority of these girls show remarkable strengths in the face of challenges, and their families and communities provide many assets to support their development. This new volume showcases these strengths.

Review

“This new edition of Urban Girls is a rare gem. In fact, you won't find another book that comes even close to offering the range and depth of understanding you'll read in these pages. This is a book about the complexity of urban girls’ lives that situates their struggles, hopes, and dreams in relationships with friends, families, schools, neighborhoods, and community centers. Anyone who wants to have a real conversation about policies and practices that support girls’ strengths and resilience should read and use this book.”

-Lyn Mikel Brown,author of Girlfighting

“Coming from multiple disciplinary perspectives and employing diverse methodologies, the contributors emphasize the girls’ and young women’s strength in creating safe spaces with family, friends, and mentors; claiming their sexuality; and developing personal and public resistance strategies. Taken together, the essays are a valuable contribution to the field of gender studies, urban ethnography, and adolescent development, and would appeal to various readers, including activists and undergraduates.”
-Choice

“Offers a significant contribution to the field of gender and adolescent development. Using cutting edge theory and research, it opens windows into the lives of a diverse group of adolescent girls. By emphasizing the social context of these girls’ lives, the contributors illustrate the complex interplay between individuals and the relationships with which they engage and the choices they make.”
-Lauren E. Duncan,Smith College

Critical Race Narratives: A Study of Race, Rhetoric and Injury (Critical America), by Carl Gutierrez-Jones

The beating of Rodney King, the killing of Amadou Diallo, and the LAPD Rampart Scandal: these events have been interpreted by the courts, the media and the public in dramatically conflicting ways. Critical Race Narratives examines what is at stake in these conflicts and, in so doing, rethinks racial strife in the United States as a highly-charged struggle over different methods of reading and writing.

Focusing in particular on the practice and theorization of narrative strategies, Gutiérrez-Jones engages many of the most influential texts in the recent race debatesincluding The Bell Curve, America in Black and White, The Alchemy of Race and Rights, and The Mismeasure of Man. In the process, Critical Race Narratives pursues key questions posed by the texts as they work within, or against, disciplinary expectations: can critical engagements with narrative enable a more democratic dialogue regarding race? what promise does such experimentation hold for working through the traumatic legacy of racism in the United States? Throughout, Critical Race Narratives initiates a timely dialogue between race-focused narrative experiment in scholarly writing and similar work in literary texts and popular culture.

Review

"Mining the proliferation of discourses of racial injury in US popular culture, law, and academics, Carl Gutierrez-Jones offers an interdisciplinary tour de force that challenges readers to rethink nearly every model for analyzing race used today. Emerging when formal politics in the US have been wholly kidnapped by the far Right, Critical Race Narratives has arrived just in time.”

-Robyn Wiegman,Duke University, author of American Anatomies: Theorizing Race and Gender

"In its own rhetorical practices as well as its prescriptions, his book makes a powerful case for why not only John Rechy's migrants need 'alternative stories to engage their imagination and critical facilities,' but why the socially and economically privileged do too. It's an impressive display."

-Michael Cowan

"An engaging and fascinating book. In a surprising and unexpected fashion, Carl Gutierrez-Jones shows how narrative fictions become social facts, and how 'raced ways of knowing' secretly shape how we make sense of our shared social life."

-George Lipsitz, author of The Possessive Investment in Whiteness

Carl Gutierrez-Jones is Associate Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the author of Rethinking the Borderlands: Between Chicano Culture and Legal Discourse.

You'll probably like this book if you believe critical race nonsense. Otherwise, skip it. I gave it an extra star because I feel bad about being the only person to review it... plus it is printed on nice paper. That's about all I can say about this.
