About the Author
Robert W. Jackson is an urban planner and historian, and previously served as a historian for the Historic American Engineering Record, National Park Service, where he documented historic bridges and highways in Texas, Iowa and Pennsylvania. He holds a PhD in American Civilization from University of Texas, and is the author of Rails across the Mississippi: A History of the St. Louis Bridge. He currently lives in Austin, Texas.

Good but not thrilling

Fabulous reseach work, but half of the book is spent in describing the political bickering, financing conflicts, and personal interests at stake, with a level of detail that makes it boring.
I would have preferred more of the book devoted to the fascinating engineering aspects, more graphics, a better visual explanation on how the "caisson" building system works, and "sanhogs" anecdotes. A more journalistic approach.
The coal famine and the 1949 fire are the best chapters.

Informative, and focused on people

This account of New York's Holland Tunnel extends from the need to supplement haulage by ferries and barges to the recent prohibition of eastbound truck passage. Author Robert Jackson relates well our city's 1917-1918 winter coal shortage, the choices of tunnel construction, the work itself and the following eight decades.
I thank the author for emphasizing people. We meet Governor Walter Edge, George Goethals, T. Albeus Adams, Frank Hague, Engineer Clifford Holland, his successors Milton Freeman, and Ole Singstad. One might say that Holland and Freeman died from their intense concern for the project. Jackson relates how others unfortunately lost their lives: Philip Healy by drowning. Steve Roizek by falling from a scaffold, Joseph Richard, falling down a shaft, G. J. Slade, tending an air lock, Dennis Sullivan, toppling sixty feet when a handrail gave way, in addition to sandhogs who suffered grievously from the bends.
Clifford Holland received his job appointment in 1919. He died October 27, 1924, two days before crews holed through the north tube.
The planning of the 1920's may now be seen in the wise separation of the Manhattan tunnel entrance at Broome Street from the exit alongside Canal Street, the four ventilation towers, two on land, two at water's edge, and the wide Jersey City approach. The New Jersey scene has changed much since 1950. Condos, yacht basins, a shopping mall, and "big box" stores replace the Erie and Pennsylvania freight yards.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail on its trestle offers a panoramic view of land and river, but walks will lead one to interesting pre-tunnel homes, churches, and buildings on both shores.

An important history of one of the vehicle tunnels under the Hudson River. Every engineer and New Yorker ought to read this very important infrastructure that managed to increase employment from New Jersey.
