Inner Lives: Voices of African American Women In Prison, by Paula Johnson

The rate of women entering prison has increased nearly 400 percent since 1980, with African American women constituting the largest percentage of this population. However, despite their extremely disproportional representation in correctional institutions, little attention has been paid to their experiences within the criminal justice system.

Inner Lives provides readers the rare opportunity to intimately connect with African American women prisoners. By presenting the women's stories in their own voices, Paula C. Johnson captures the reality of those who are in the system, and those who are working to help them. Johnson offers a nuanced and compelling portrait of this fastest-growing prison population by blending legal history, ethnography, sociology, and criminology. These striking and vivid narratives are accompanied by equally compelling arguments by Johnson on how to reform our nation's laws and social policies, in order to eradicate existing inequalities. Her thorough and insightful analysis of the historical and legal background of contemporary criminal law doctrine, sentencing theories, and correctional policies sets the stage for understanding the current system.

From Booklist
Johnson, a law professor, offers a look at the lives of women who have been rendered virtually invisible by their race, sex, and incarceration, noting that two-thirds of new inmates are black women. Johnson begins with a historical overview and analysis of criminal law and sentencing reform with the rise in the U.S. prison population and closes with recommendations for reform. But the most compelling part of the book is the middle section, which includes interviews with women who are or have been incarcerated. By including photographs, Johnson gives these women visibility and voice as they relate their lives, their crimes, and their efforts to remain connected to families and communities. This is a powerful look at the forces that drove these women to crime--most murdered abusive husbands and boyfriends or committed drug-related offenses--as well as their efforts to maintain ties to their children and their growing self-awareness. A start to coverage of a much needed topic
By M. Logue
While this like other books is not perfect, the authors begin to try to address the shortage of information on women in the criminal justice system, especially in the prison system. In particular, the authors provide attention to women of color, who like their male counterparts, comprise the majority of those in prison. As a criminology and sociology professor at a private Jesuit university, this book is very beneficial for getting my students to think outside the box and begin critical discourse on the topic. Most women, like most men, are not in prison for violent crimes. They are incarcerated for non-violent crimes, most of which involve drugs. furthermore, they are more likely than men to be incarcerated for drug offenses, and this has been a major contributing factor to their increasing incarceration rates, which are occuring at a faster and higher rate than men overall. In fact, in the federal system, around 40% of all offenders are incarcerated for drugs. While not all women who offend have been victimized, most have some history of adult and/or childhood victimization, which this book attempts to address. Unfortunately, given the non-violent nature of the crimes that most women commit, they continue to be ignored or provided only marginal attention in the criminological field. Women of color are even more marginalized in the literature, though this is beginning to change. This book is a good start to getting people to begin addressing these issues. The authors make no pretense about being neutral, which may concern some readers focused on academic rigor. however, the framework for the book does not take away from its contributions, even if they are not flawless. Nothing ever is.

Weak academically and otherwise
By Professor Rowe
Professor Johnson gives the total victim typology a full-out book-length workout. Every excuse for the women she cites comitting crimes is dredged out and covered weakly with academic gloss. Most women are in prison for violent, not non-violent crimes, which invalidates many of her arguments for them as primarily society's victims (as prostitutes, drug addicts etc.) A lower % of African-American women are in prison than African-American men, which she fails to cite, and also fails to butress her points. The whinier of the voices she quotes also grates after a while.

Check out this interview with the author on C-SPAN!

In 1912, a revolutionary chick cries, “Strike down the wall!” and liberates itself from the “egg state.” In 1940, ostriches pull their heads out of the sand and unite to fight fascism. In 1972, Baby X grows up without a gender and is happy about it.

Rather than teaching children to obey authority, to conform, or to seek redemption through prayer, twentieth-century leftists encouraged children to question the authority of those in power. Tales for Little Rebels collects forty-three mostly out-of-print stories, poems, comic strips, primers, and other texts for children that embody this radical tradition. These pieces reflect the concerns of twentieth-century leftist movements, like peace, civil rights, gender equality, environmental responsibility, and the dignity of labor. They also address the means of achieving these ideals, including taking collective action, developing critical thinking skills, and harnessing the liberating power of the imagination.

Some of the authors and illustrators are familiar, including Lucille Clifton, Syd Hoff, Langston Hughes, Walt Kelly, Norma Klein, Munro Leaf, Julius Lester, Eve Merriam, Charlotte Pomerantz, Carl Sandburg, and Dr. Seuss. Others are relatively unknown today, but their work deserves to be remembered. (Each of the pieces includes an introduction and a biographical sketch of the author.) From the anti-advertising message of Johnny Get Your Money’s Worth (and Jane Too)! (1938) to the entertaining lessons in ecology provided by The Day They Parachuted Cats on Borneo (1971), and Sandburg’s mockery of war in Rootabaga Pigeons (1923), these pieces will thrill readers intrigued by politics and history―and anyone with a love of children’s literature, no matter what age.

Review

“Tales for Little Rebels anthologizes 75 years of radical children’s literature. It’s a rousing, relevant chronicle of teaching kids about social and environmental justice, civil rights, and their power to challenge the status quo.”

-Julie Hanus,The Utne Reader

“A ribald, witty, sometimes fun, sometimes thoughtful examination of a wide swath of too little-known literature.“

“Financial behemoths have been nationalized. There are even rumors of universal health care. Socialism is on the march! As we leave capitalism behind, the traditionalists among you may be wondering: Will they come for our children? Too late. As Mickenberg and Nel document in Tales for Little Rebels, Marxist principles have been dripping steadily into the minds of American youth for more than a century. . . . As America backs cautiously away from its laissez-faire disasters and reluctantly into an unfamiliar, communal style of politics, some of us may find ourselves wishing we had been scared with such rhymes in kindergarten instead of having had to live through them as adults.”

-The New York Times Book Review

“Tales for Little Rebels is indeed a timely collection and one that serves as an excellent touchstone for future research into a ‘usable past’ for contemporary academics.”

-Children's Literature Association Quarterly

“As an educator, I share the belief that all of the authors in this collection must also have held as truth: that children are indeed the future, and to bring about social change, one needs to begin by changing the hearts and minds of children... I believe lovers of social/political history and inquiring minds in general, [sic] would find this collection appealing.”-Style Substance Soul

“This book reveals a unique, vibrant, imaginative, and energetic left-wing tradition of writing for young people. It is an invaluable resource for progressive educators and hopefully will inspire teachers to write and even publish their own children’s books dealing with sensitive political and social issues.”
-Rethinking Schools Online

"Children's literature with timeless philosophy for grown-ups."-Maria Popova ,Brainpicking

“Julia Mickenburg and Philip Nel have edited a collection of children’s literature that represents the left-wing-oriented, oppositional tradition in children’s literature in the United States. And a lovely collection it is!... Mickenburg and Nel have done all of us —parents, activists, writers—a service by providing examples of what has been done. The task remains to carry this forward.”-Science & Society

“Mickenberg and Nel have switched on the power of radical children’s literature to maximum wattage, revealing a rich, compelling tradition that deserves our attention. Creating an archive that will have authority and endurance, they have recovered stories encouraging children to engage with social, economic, and environment challenges and to become agents of change.”
-Maria Tatar,Harvard University, and author of The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen

“Readers looking for the animals, sprites, and other characters common to children’s literature will find them, with a twist.”
-The Chronicle Review

“A rarely discussed aspect of children’s literature—the politics behind, or part, of a book’s creation—has been thoroughly explored in this intelligent, enlightening, and fascinating account. Even those who have spent a lifetime studying children’s books will find incredible surprises, such as Walter Crane’s ‘Happy Valley’ or information about Lynd Ward’s political activism. But the book is not merely a history; it is a very timely exploration of the appropriate inclusion of political/social content in children’s books, and it provides examples of titles that succeed as literature and those in which politics overwhelm the story. Every academic and public library should own a copy; every children’s literature professor needs to read it; all children’s book enthusiasts will want to share it with their colleagues.”
-Anita Silvey, author of 100 Best Books for Children

“Mickenberg and Nel fill a gap in scholarship on children’s literature.”
-Choice

"The collection focuses on a fascinating combination of ideology and creativity introducing its readers to a multiplicity of ways didactic messages were presented to a children’s audience. This anthology is important for scholars of Russian literature because it shows the inherent elements of children’s literature that permits its use (and abuse) for ideological purposes."-Working Group for Study of Russian Children's Literature and Culture blog

“By introducing kids (and their parents) to a wide range of forgotten and overlooked texts addressing progressive themes, and by provoking a closer look at what the books we already own imply, Mickenberg and Nel have done parents and kids alike a truly important service.”
-The Texas Observer

“Sure, this is an important work. But it ain’t stuffy. Mickenberg and Nel have created a book that fascinates and entertains. A must for any student of history or children’s books.”
-Lane Smith, author of John, Paul, George & Ben and illustrator of The Stinky Cheese Man

“A remarkable book. . . . The prose excerpts are fascinating; the illustrations are perfectly fabulous and, very often, really funny. . . . There is so much here, and something unique for everyone except sourpuss defenders of the status quo.”
-Paul Buhle , Monthly Review

"I have a soft spot for beautiful and thoughtful children's books, especially children's literature with timeless philosophy for grown-ups...Tales for Little Rebels made me think of the subtle ideological messages in some of my favorite recent children's books."-Maria Popova,The Atlantic

“For those who want to understand a time when radicals could think of themselves as having a central place in U.S. culture, right down to science instruction; for those who cherish beautiful, playful, wistful and stark illustrations; for those who can use reminders, after horrors and defeats, of the bedrock ethical bases of socialism, for those who want to know where a Dr. Seuss came from, and what he was part of, and for those who still think the world could use more little and grown-up rebels, this is the book.”
-David Roediger,University of Illinois, and author of How Race Survived U.S. History

“While is clearly intended as a textbook for a college course on this subject, the variety within this anthology should suggest it is well worth extended investigation. We may even begin questioning the degree of propaganda that surrounds our daily life as adults and realize such story-telling is no longer limited only to the realm of childhood.” -American Communist History

“Mickenberg and Nel have done a real service in reclaiming these selections of children’s literature, some by such well known children’s book authors as Julius Lester and Dr. Seuss but many from writers whose reputations were made and works published on the barricades of the Left.”
-The Horn Book Inc.

“Consistently fascinating. . . . Boast[s] authors as skilled as Carl Sandburg, Munro (Ferdinand the Bull) Leaf, Dr. Seuss, Eve Merriam and Langston Hughes.”
-Toronto Globe and Mail

Wonderful in Every Way! This book is a WOW that you will want to read and keep!
By AmazonJavaJunki
This is SUCH a neat book - I barely know where to begin to describe how unique and fun it is to read. First of all, it is unlike anything else I've come across on the subject of children's books; a great blend of history, text book and literature it is as educational as it is fascinating.

First a few comments - I've never given much thought to the topic and those with more than a passing interest may find some of the information rudimentary. However, there is a good balance between "background info" and the stories themselves. If you have a strong interest in this topic then here is a great collection of what must surely be hard to find stories that represent foundatonal examples. If you are like myself with a limited background on the topic then the additional material is helpful - and the stories are simply fascinating.

The authors do a great job of providing a brief background on the author, era and environment of the original writing then the story itself is reproduced. The version of the book I'm reading is an uncorrected proof so the text/other isn't much to go on at this point but they have also taken steps to reproduce some of the original sketches along with the story which is a nice touch to give the full impact of the original.

Another aspect of the book that I really enjoy is the variety of subjects included...from basic primers to more advanced levels these present a diverse look at how childrens literature and learning presents agenda's ranging from science to socialism. As you might expect, religion plays a significant role in some of the oldest examples but perhaps the most stunning examples are those concerning politics. Examples like "The Story of your Coat" and "The Socialist Primer" are simply fascinating.

Finally, the authors provide excellent notes and additional information for those interested in pursuing additional reading on the subject.

Who Will Love this Book...
Those interested in history, politics or religion.
Those interested in education.
Those interested in literature and how it shapes the world around us.
Those with children who want to further their understanding of how the minds of their own children are being shaped.
Academics - teachers and college students.
Anyone with an interest in unique literature.

A delightful, unique and utterly wonderful addition to my library! GREAT job on this book.

We All Need to be Rebels
By deeper waters
Understanding "radical" as wanting "to explore the essence of phenomena, experiences, actions and social relations to enable young people to grasp the basic conditions in which they live", Tales for Little Rebels takes 8 social/cultural themes and examines how they have been addressed by liberal children's authors. Many of the featured pieces were obvious in their efforts to influence the behavior and thought of readers, particularly those written for Socialist or religious publications, but the vast majority simply wove the values into a story that children could enjoy. It was interesting to read about the personal experiences of the authors and to see them reflected in their stories, particularly writers like Syd Hoff and Wanda Gag who also wrote for Marxist publications. Much of children's literature has the underlying theme of make order out of disorder/good conquering evil (although who and what is good is not necessarily the same for all people) as well as giving kids the encouragement to find their own solutions to the riddles of life. (which means that it is all political ~ commenting in some manner on social relationships) With the glut of choices, it is important that adults choose well and encourage their children to experience a wide range of literature that can entertain, reassure, inform, challenge, empower and invite them into a large and diverse world. It is also important for adults to read to and with their children and help make connections between the story in the book and their own stories. The authors have included a list of radical reading which includes old as well as new works, organized by theme. We live in a time when critical thinking skills are essential and the ability of enough people to do so is inadequate; radical literature will help with this. I would also add to this list the Lois Lenski, Robert McCloskey and Margaret Wise Brown books, The Man who had no Dream, Gordon the Goat (Munro Leaf), Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (Virginia Lee Burton)....and many others. This is not a book that one would sit down and read cover to cover in one sitting, but is an excellent resource for teachers and for anyone interested in seeing the tremendous interplay between arts and culture.

Written By ---REBELS---WITH---A---CAUSE---
By Alex H
TALES FOR LITTLE REBELS: A COLLECTION OF RADICAL CHILDREN'S LITERATURE took me by surprise, twice. At first, I thought the book was going to be filled with funny cartoons and stuff like that...but when I got it, it was knee-deep with analysis. Thinking I made a mistake, and flashing back on my college years, I begrudgingly forced myself to start reading.

And what I found was my second surprise: it was interesting! Yes there was some semiotics involved, but the editors Julia L. Mickenberg and Philip Nel did an excellent job of compiling the book and explaining things in simple to understand language.

It's broken down by themes, i.e. rebellion, organization, justice etc., and each theme has an introduction that helps the reader understand what was going on at the time when these stories were published. This is followed by information regarding the author and illustrator of the piece (if known), followed by the actual story.

All of the works are from the 20th century and many are taken from Socialist, Marxist and Communist papers or books. Likewise, many of the writers and illustrators were part of either the Communist or Socialist movements and many turned to children's stories because those stories weren't heavily scrutinized by the censors. And for many it was the only job they could find after being blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

The editors did a fair job in presenting the reasons many of these authors and illustrators/artists turned to Socialism etc. because of a reaction toward unfair labor practices and living conditions that affected adults and children alike.

Stories consist of either cartoons, comics, text-only stories, and stories with photos (that seemed to be from school books), and were taken from a variety of sources, so there's a pretty broad mix here. And some stories are quite obvious in their propagandist tone, while others are very subtle.

There are also stories about the environment, race relations, gender equality and peace.

Would I recommend this book to kids? Not necessarily. But I would suggest that parents get it, read it, and then read the stories to their children. As the editors pointed out in the introduction that the purpose for collecting and re-printing many of these stories is not to influence young minds to either side of the coin, but to help them begin to critically analyze the world around them.

With so much going on in our world today, young people could use all the help they can get.

The Queer Renaissance: Contemporary American Literature and the Reinvention of Lesbian and Gay Identities, by Robert McRuer

Before the 1969 Stonewall Riots ushered in the contemporary gay liberation movement, overt representations of same-sex desire in American literature and the arts were few and far between. Even in the 1970s, when gay and lesbian cultures began to register on our national consciousness, such work was still quite rare.

In the 1980s and 90s, however, all that changed. The Queer Renaissance puts a name to the unprecedented outpouring of creative work by openly lesbian and gay novelists, poets, and playwrights in the past two decades. This volume is one of the first to analyze critically this cultural awakening and is one of the only books to consider the work of gay male and lesbian writers together. Most importantly, The Queer Renaissance is the first book to consider how this wave of creative activity has worked in tandem with a flourishing of radical queer politics.

The Queer Renaissance explores the work of such important figures as Audre Lorde, Edmund White, Randall Kenan, Gloria Anzalda, Tony Kushner, and Sarah Schulman to question the dichotomy between art and activism. In addition, The Queer Renaissance interrogates the ways queer theory deploys, intersects with, and contests contemporary theoretical movements such as cultural studies, feminist theory, African American theory, and Chicano/a theory.

"Mose Brown has entered the hidden realm of West Indian childcare workers and produced a remarkable picture of urban life. This is fine grained, careful ethnography that reveals the taken for granted intimacies and politics of everyday experience." -Mitchell Duneier, author of "Sidewalk"

"[An] engrossing look at the Caribbean community of child care workers in Brooklyn, NY" -"Library Journal",

"Vividly written...Mose Brown's own voice is especially poignant; her reflexivity about her relationships to others as a researcher, fellow New Yorker and mother is a model for contemporary ethnography."-Joanna Dreby, author of "Divided by Borders: Mexican Migrants and their Children"

"A sensitive and nuanced glimpse into the lives of the women who raise so many of Brooklyn's--and America's—children. Mose Brown has given us a deeply compelling and timely ethnography."
-Philip Kasinitz, co-author of "Inheriting the City"

&8220;Outsiders can only wonder what West Indian caregivers say to each other as they sit on park benches watching their charges. Mose Brown gives us the answer, in an insightful and fascinating account of how these women create their own social worlds in public spaces. How Effective is Strategic Bombing?: Lessons Learned From World War II to Kosovo (World of War), by Gian P. Gentile

In the wake of World War II, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and President Harry S. Truman established the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, to determine exactly how effectively strategic air power had been applied in the European theater and in the Pacific. The final study, consisting of over 330 separate reports and annexes, was staggering in its size and emphatic in its conclusions. As such it has for decades been used as an objective primary source and a guiding text, a veritable Bible for historians of air power.

In this aggressively revisionist volume, Gian Gentile examines afresh this influential document to reveal how it reflected to its very foundation the American conceptual approach to strategic bombing. In the process, he exposes the survey as largely tautological and thereby throwing into question many of the central tenets of American air power philosophy and strategy.

With a detailed chapter on the Gulf War and the resulting Gulf War Air Power Survey, and a concluding chapter on the lessons of the Kosovo air war, How Effective is Strategic Bombing? is the most comprehensive and important book on air power strategy in decades.

Review

"Gian Gentile provides a first rate analysis of the Gulf War Air Power Survey against the backdrop World War II's U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. His well-researched critique also offers much insight about the Air Force mindset during the past half century."

-Mark A. Clodfelter,Professor of Military History, The National War College, Washington, D.C.

"The most thorough and accurate analysis ever written about the conduct and results of the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. Gentile demonstrates that underneath its veneer of objectivity clashed a number of conflicting agendas and personalities, and in many ways the conclusions were preordained. This work shows the difficulty inherent in analyzing the results of any air campaign. Recent problems with bomb damage assessment in the Balkans reinforce his conclusions."

-Conrad Crane,Professor of Military History, United States Military Academy, West Point

How Effective is Strategic Bombing is a thought provoking analysis on the subject of air power and bombing and the use of surveys to explain the effects of air power on the enemy in conflict."

Bait and Switch book marketing
By Stephen M. St Onge
The TITLE of this book asks an interesting and important question. The TEXT makes no attempt whatsoever to answer it. Instead, this is a book about the internal politics of the U.S. Army Air Force as it strove to become an independent service with status equal to the Army and Navy. It mostly dwells on the United States Strategic Bombing Survey, the motives of the people who ordered it, and the struggles to present various points of view within it. Occasionally, the author mentions what various people in the survey concluded, with hardly any attempt to explain why they came to the conclusions they did, and no consideration as to whether the survey's authors were correct. Neither does Col. Gentile present any conclusions of his own on this subject. I can only conclude that the effectiveness of strategic bombing doesn't really interest him, and that the title was applied solely to deceive potential customers.

For those who ARE interested in the question the title asks, try David MacIsaac's "Strategic Bombing in World War Two: The Story of the United States Strategic Bombing Survey", a really good book.

Hollywood v. Hard Core: How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry, by Jon Lewis

In 1972, The Godfather and Deep Throat were the two most popular films in the country. One, a major Hollywood studio production, the other an independently made "skin flick." At that moment, Jon Lewis asserts, the fate of the American film industry hung in the balance.

Spanning the 20th century, Hollywood v. Hard Core weaves a gripping tale of censorship and regulation. Since the industry's infancy, film producers and distributors have publicly regarded ratings codes as a necessary evil. Hollywood regulates itself, we have been told, to prevent the government from doing it for them. But Lewis argues that the studios self-regulate because they are convinced it is good for business, and that censorship codes and regulations are a crucial part of what binds the various competing agencies in the film business together.

Yet between 1968 and 1973 Hollywood films were faltering at the box office, and the major studios were in deep trouble. Hollywood's principal competition came from a body of independently produced and distributed films--from foreign art house film Last Tango in Paris to hard-core pornography like Behind the Green Door--that were at once disreputable and, for a moment at least, irresistible, even chic. In response, Hollywood imposed the industry-wide MPAA film rating system (the origins of the G, PG, and R designations we have today) that pushed sexually explicit films outside the mainstream, and a series of Supreme Court decisions all but outlawed the theatrical exhibition of hard core pornographic films. Together, these events allowed Hollywood to consolidate its iron grip over what films got made and where they were shown, thus saving it from financial ruin.

From Publishers Weekly
Lewis's exhaustive history of censorship in American motion pictures starts off with a bang as he traces how the fledgling Motion Picture Association of America allied itself in 1947 with the House Committee on Un-American Activities to increase its power. The truth of the Hollywood adage "when they tell you it's not about the money... it's about the money" is repeatedly confirmed as Lewis demonstrates how the MPAA, which is supposed to serve as a watchdog for parents, really functions to promote big Hollywood business and discourage upstart independents. Lewis's chronicle of prominent skirmishes with the MPAA censors begins in the '50s (with The Moon Is Blue, Baby Doll and Tea and Sympathy) and continues into the '60s, when an X rating didn't necessarily indicate pornographic material (Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, The Killing of Sister George), before moving into the present day (Eyes Wide Shut, Showgirls). The MPAA doesn't come off as an evil censor so much as a money-driven business concernDunlike Ted Turner, who apparently sabotaged the release of his own company's Crash and Bastard Out of Carolina because of his distaste for the projects. Only a fraction of the book covers the few years in the early 1970s when Hollywood was actually threatened by the popularity of hardcore films like The Devil in Miss Jones and Deep Throat. If there's a problem with Lewis's investigative report, it's that it is exhaustively complete: there is no detail too small to trace back a century, making it an outstanding reference but too detailed for most general readers. From Library Journal
Although censorship guidelines have existed since the early days of film, their most organized form was developed in fairly modern times more to ensure substantial economic returns for the studios than to protect the public. Lewis (English, Oregon State Univ.) presents a well-researched history of the subject and analyzes the social, political, and financial motives that drive the ratings system. He discusses general film content, disputed scenes, definitions of pornography and obscenity, boundaries of compromise, artistic intent, among other topics. From the development of the industry and the blacklist days to the threat of independently produced hardcore films and recent market trends, the author studies court rulings, pivotal events, studio philosophies, and public figures ranging from Fatty Arbuckle to Richard Nixon. Lewis concludes that the industry's regulations grew from an astute evaluation of criteria relating to potential box office appeal and the necessity of maintaining overall control. The bottom line, he argues, is about money not art. For scholars, students, and those who work in or are seriously interested in the film industry. Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, NJ

Review

"…an accomplished, comprehensive, and provocative new history of censorship and the American film industry…And what of the perennialtussles between politicos and the film industry? All show business, suggests Lewis, make-believe veiling the real power structure that hasnothing to do with morals, let alone art (it would be interesting to get his take on the recent marketing brouhaha and its relationship tothe recent threatened actors and writers strikes). A staggering saga worthy itself of a Hollywood movie, Hollywood v. Hardcore is filmhistory at its most illuminating and intense."

-The Boston Phoenix

"Jon Lewis weaves a compelling narrative of how box office needs-rather than moral strictures-have dictated the history of film regulation. Telling the complex and fascinating story of how Hollywood abandoned the Production Code and developed the ratings system and then telling the even more compelling story of how the X rating became a desirable marketing device when hard core pornography became popular, Hollywood v. Hard Core reveals a great deal about the true business of censorship."

-Linda Williams, author of Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the "Frenzy of the Visible"

"When it comes to censorship in Hollywood, the bottom line is the ticket line. That's the central message in Jon Lewis's provocativeand insightful investigation of the movie industry's history of self-regulation.…Lewis shows that Hollywood films are a triumph ofcommerce over art, and that the film industry has consistently used internal censorship and government-industrial collusion to guaranteethat its cash flow is never seriously threatened."

-The New York Times Book Review

"As provocative as his sometimes X-rated subject matter, film scholar Lewis detects an intimate relationship between the seemingly strange bedfellows of mainstream Hollywood cinema and hardcore pornography. From postal inspector Anthony Comstock to virtue maven William Bennett, from the Hays Office that monitored the golden age of Hollywood to the alphabet ratings system that labels the motion pictures in today's multiplex malls, Lewis's wry, informative, and always insightful study of American film censorship demonstrates that the most effective media surveillance happens before you see the movie. Hollywood v. Hard Core is highly recommended for audiences of all ages."

-Thomas Doherty,author of Pre-Code Hollywood

"This is a fascinating account, both entertaining and scholarly."

-Journal of the West

Provocative Title, Thorough Study
By Ricky Hunter
Jon E. Lewis has written an interesting book in Hollywood v. Hard Core, although it does not entirely live up to or prove its subtitle, How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry, it often comes close. The climax of the book focuses on the battles of the late sixties and early seventies but its vision is much larger and encompasses film history from its origins until the battles at the beginning of this new millenium. He promises heroes and villains and he delivers them and even combines one person (Jack Valenti) in both roles, depending on who is talking about him, of course. The book is always fascinating as it ranges over the history of film and the author always makes the economics clear and central to the debate (something left to the side in most histories of film censorship.) Particularly interesting and illuminating is the section on the McCarthy period. A recommended read.

Exhaustively Detailed But Compelling History of Film Censorship

Legal Education and the Reproduction of Hierarchy: A Polemic Against the System (Critical America), by Duncan Kennedy

In 1983 Harvard law professor Duncan Kennedy self-published a biting critique of the law school system called Legal Education and the Reproduction of Hierarchy. This controversial booklet was reviewed in several major law journals—unprecedented for a self-published work—and influenced a generation of law students and teachers.

In this well-known critique, Duncan Kennedy argues that legal education reinforces class, race, and gender inequality in our society. However, Kennedy proposes a radical egalitarian alternative vision of what legal education should become, and a strategy, starting from the anarchist idea of workplace organizing, for struggle in that direction. Legal Education and the Reproduction of Hierarchy is comprehensive, covering everything about law school from the first day to moot court to job placement to life after law school. Kennedy's book remains one of the most cited works on American legal education.

The visually striking original text is reprinted here, making it available to a new generation. The text is buttressed by commentaries by five prominent legal scholars who consider its meaning for today, as well as by an introduction and afterword by the author that describes the context in which Kennedy wrote the book, including a brief history of critical legal studies.

Review

“Kennedy’s book remains one of the defining blows of critical legal studies and an enduring challenge to the entire structure of legal education. It remains as vital, incisive and daring as when it first appeared.”
-Scott Turow, author of One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School.

“Duncan Kennedy’s little red book has become a classic. But now with its republication twenty years later, Kennedy's ‘polemic against the system’takes us beyond its origins as a field guide to legal education. Amplified by the voices of other distinguished scholars, this stunning collection of essays forces us to consider the ways in which hierarchies and their resulting social alienation disfigure contemporary society, not just our law schools.”
-Lani Guinier,Harvard University

“An important founding text in the history of critical approaches to law taken by scholars located in law schools.”
-The Law and Politics Book Review

“Duncan Kennedy's critique of legal education now gets the wide distribution it deserves. Kennedy's insightful skewering of legal education, supplemented by his own reflections on the work and views of other legal educators, will provide prospective law students with a flavor of what they are in for — and will remind lawyers of what they went through. Kennedy's message is as important today as it was two decades ago when he first penned this work.”
-Mark Tushnet,Georgetown University

Quite an interesting book by Duncan Kennedy on the teaching at Law School and how hierarchy is reproduced, rather than people instructed in law.

Review

"Fascinating."-"Historical Journal of Massachusetts",

"Neimeyer pushes to the next plateau the recent work of historians who have investigated the contributions of the Continental Army to the American Revolution. Because of his research and his synthesis of recent scholarship, the previously inarticulate common soldiers of the rank and file find their voices."-James M. Johnson, author of "Militiamen, Rangers, and Redcoats: The Military in Georgia, 1754-1776"

"Neimeyer demythologizes the Continental army and very effectively demonstrates that it was an organization that evolved from its original relatively homogeneous make-up into a volatile, multicultural force that included many recent immigrants, African Americans, and Native Americans. . . . A testament to the propertyless, inarticulate, marginal individuals who actually secured liberty for later generations." -Dr. David J. Fowler, The David Library of the American Revolution

"Thoroughly compelling. Neimeyer's research is superb, and his social history perspective has told us more than anyone about the origins of the Continental Army and the meanings soldiers attached to their service. This is a genuinely important book."-Mark Edward Ledner, co-author of "A Respectable Army: The Military Origins of the Republic"

Interesting Historical Perspective
By JDB-NH
Essential Papers share anecdotal stories of unique characters and their circumstances, but then some of the writers try to globalize their "findings" to the general population as reasons for self destructive behavior. Since the papers were written in the early 20th century, heavy weight is given to Sigmund Freud's and Karl Menninger's theories. The papers do provide an insight into the "pop-psychology" of the past, and give the reader a better understanding on how far the field of psychiatry has come over the past 100 years. The book's finale is a crown jewel written by Edwin Shneidman, "Suicide as Psychache" wherein the three components of prevention arise: reduce the pain, provide a truncated time for endurance, and offer coping resources.
