Black Garden: Armenia and Azerbaijan Through Peace and War, 10th Year Anniversary Edition, Revised and Updated, by Thomas de Waal

“Brilliant.”—Time    “Admirable, rigorous. De Waal [is] a wise and patient reporter.”—The New York Review of Books    “Never have all the twists and turns, sad carnage, and bullheadedness on all side been better described—or indeed, better explained…Offers a deeper and more compelling account of the conflict than anyone before.”—Foreign Affairs    Since its publication in 2003, the first edition of Black Garden has become the definitive study of how Armenia and Azerbaijan, two southern Soviet republics, were pulled into a conflict that helped bring them to independence, spell the end the Soviet Union, and plunge a region of great strategic importance into a decade of turmoil. This important volume is both a careful reconstruction of the history of the Nagorny Karabakh conflict since 1988 and on-the-spot reporting of the convoluted aftermath. Part contemporary history, part travel book, part political analysis, the book is based on six months traveling through the south Caucasus, more than 120 original interviews in the region, Moscow, and Washington, and unique historical primary sources, such as Politburo archives. The historical chapters trace how the conflict lay unresolved in the Soviet era; how Armenian and Azerbaijani societies unfroze it; how the Politiburo failed to cope with the crisis; how the war was fought and ended; how the international community failed to sort out the conflict. What emerges is a complex and subtle portrait of a beautiful and fascinating region, blighted by historical prejudice and conflict.   The revisedand updated 10th-year anniversary edition includes a new forward, a new chapter covering developments up to-2011, such as the election of new presidents in both countries, Azerbaijan’s oil boom and the new arms race in the region, and a new conclusion, analysing the reasons for the intractability of the conflict and whether there are any prospects for its resolution. Telling the story of the first conflict to shake Mikhail Gorbachev's Soviet Union, Black Garden remains a central account of the reality of the post-Soviet world.

Arguably the best introductory book on the subject.
By Academic Refugee
Disregard the hyperbolic one star reviews. Sadly, they represent the blind passions and willful ignorance that is prevalent on either side of the conflict. Sometimes the truth hurts, and when the people of Armenia and Azerbaijan are willing to accept hard truths, there may finally be progress in the region.

The glowing praise this book has received from worthy critics is well-earned, and I cannot recommend a better introduction to the dispute over Nagorno Karabakh. This is an acute and balanced view of the region, its politics, and the small-minded xenophobia (on both sides) that continues to drive the dispute. While I've only read the previous edition of this fine book, I'm sure the updated version will only serve to strengthen de Waal's fantastic overview of the region and its political climate.

Highly recommended.

Invaluable Primer on a Remote Yet Significant Conflict
By Peter Ramming
Thomas de Waal's "Black Garden" is the best place to start (especially for readers limited to English) for a balanced and fairly in-depth treatment of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Having at the time followed as closely as I could through newspaper and magazine reports the 1991-94 "hot" war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the autonomous Armenian-majority enclave of Nagorno Karabakh, I was eager to read a more formal, retrospective and detailed historical account of the Nagorno Karabakh War. In this sense de Waal's book largely succeeds.
de Waal has done a lot of on-the-ground reporting in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia, interviewing scores of participants at all levels and from all sides. Indeed, at 328 pages of text, "Black Garden" is probably 1/3 an account of the 1991-94 fighting, 1/3 a portrait of the human dimension of the conflict, and 1/3 a more sweeping historical tableaux of the South Caucasus as a whole. I was looking mainly for a military history of the 1991-94 war, but I found this more comprehensive treatment worthwhile and educational.
Thus I learned that even into the early 20th c. the current Armenian capital of Yerevan was predominately a Persian-culture city inside the Russian Empire, with most of the Armenian heartland to the west around Mt. Ararat and Lake Van. It was only with the onset of the Turkish massacres of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 that huge waves of Armenians moved east into what is today the sovereign nation of Armenia. I learned that Nagorno Karabakh was considered the eastern highland bulwark of Armenian territory against Turkic lands sweeping eastward. I learned that the internal history of the Soviet Union was far from static, with Armenians and Azeris jockeying for primacy in Nagorno Karabakh under Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, and Gorbachev, and even sometimes assassinating their foes under the noses of the KGB. And I learned that many of the later Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders were the best of friends and comrades in the Soviet era and continued to speak fondly of each other even after all the bloodshed of 1991-94; and that many common Armenians and Azerbaijanis held similar kind feelings for one another.
"Black Garden" was first published in 2003, and then reissued with new chapters in 2013. This is helpful because though the more intensive combat ended with a ceasefire in 1994, this is far from a "frozen conflict," with Armenian and Azerbaijani forces facing each other along a 150 mile "line of contact," no international peacekeeping forces arrayed between, and scores of casualties resulting each year. And though Armenia prevailed in the 1991-94 fighting and continues to occupy 90% of Nagorno Karabakh and a ring of Azerbaijani territory around it for a total of 14% of Azerbaijan, the Azeris remain determined to regain this territory and, with a their new-found oil wealth, continue to build up their military with this eventual reconquest as their principal national obsession. Nagorno Karabakh remains a region to watch.

Indispensable work on the subject
By G. Z. Gzirian
The book represents the most thorough, thoughtful, and balanced account and analysis of the events and issues surrounding Nagorny Karabakh. The author’s knowledge of the subject, history of the region, and passion for its people is amazing. The long suffering people of Armenia and Azerbaijan are lucky that in Mr. De Waal they have such a keen and involved observer. Besides, the book is very engaging, and reads as a thriller.

Feeling Mediated: A History of Media Technology and Emotion in America (Critical Cultural Communication), by Brenton J. Malin

New technologies, whether text message or telegraph, inevitably raise questions about emotion. New forms of communication bring with them both fear and hope, on one hand allowing us deeper emotional connections and the ability to forge global communities, while on the other prompting anxieties about isolation and over-stimulation. Feeling Mediated investigates the larger context of such concerns, considering both how media technologies intersect with our emotional lives and how our ideas about these intersections influence how we think about and experience emotion and technology themselves.

Drawing on extensive archival research, Brenton J. Malin explores the historical roots of much of our recent understanding of mediated feelings, showing how earlier ideas about the telegraph, phonograph, radio, motion pictures, and other once-new technologies continue to inform our contemporary thinking. With insightful analysis, Feeling Mediated explores a series of fascinating arguments about technology and emotion that became especially heated during the early 20th century. These debates, which carried forward and transformed earlier discussions of technology and emotion, culminated in a set of ideas that became institutionalized in the structures of American media production, advertising, social research, and policy, leaving a lasting impact on our everyday lives.

Review
“An engaging work on emotion-inducing and sensing technologies, the concerns surrounding them, and their uptake within the early- to mid-20th century scientific community. Replete with fascinating gems that reveal our preoccupation with emotionality and its relationship to communication technologies, Feeling Mediated is a compelling foray not only into the history of media but also that of media studies.”-Ted Striphas,Indiana University

“This is an important book for thinking about the relationship between science and public culture. Instead of simply looking at media representations of science, it demonstrates so well how the public sphere itself is a sociotechnical assemblage of networked devices, concepts, bodies, measurements, and various audiences. Malin steers a clear course between technological determinism and social constructivism. We think, feel, and act in relationship with our tools, but it is precisely this relationship that matters. In the end, he leaves the reader with a rich picture of mass media as an assemblage whose infrastructure includes the often neglected social technologies of the human sciences.”-American Historical Review

"Using a wide range of archival research and several historical examples of technology's relationship with emotion, Malin demonstrates how communication technology changed the way people think about emotion and continues to . . . . Malin also offers audiences a way to understand their own emotional process in relation to new technologies, which makes this book a worthwhile read for anyone who communicates with a 'feeling machine.'"-International Journal of Communication

“[…] Malin sharpens his weapons against prevalent narratives of oversimplification, which many times also serve to perpetuate discrimination by class, gender, and race.  Nailing the big irony of this trope, Malin also argues how the laboratory instruments measure other new technologies in ways that create a complex feedback loop.”-Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly

"A wide mixture of scholarly disciplines across the last century contribute to Malin's history. They are represented by social scientists, psychologists, media and communications theorists, as well as philosophers. For historians of psychology, Feeling Mediated offers extended commentary on the work of three psychologists who are less frequently acknowledged in the literature."-PsycCritques

“Malin has written an illuminating study, bringing to our attention areas of research and thinking, some now quite neglected, that are concerned with the complex relationship between media technologies and our emotional lives.”-European Journal of Communication

“[B]y locating administrative research in a broad cultural setting, and, in particular, by characterizing it in a novel way as ‘media physicalism,’ [Malin] helps to explain how an influential tradition in American communications studies took the form that it did.”-Journal of Interdisciplinary History

“In reconstructing the debates surrounding media physicalism, Malin draws on substantial archival and primary-source research, and brings in as well intelligent discussions of the history of psychology and the philosophy of mind. Ultimately, his critique of media physicalism underscores the necessity of apprehending the historical situatedness of media technologies, showing how race, class, and gender norms were built into various media and the systems set up to measure their impact.”-Journal of American History

“Indeed one of the great many joys in reading Feeling Mediated is its clear, breezy writing that is unencumbered by jargon.  It is a page-turner, a rarity in academic books, especially those that take up emotion as a focus….Scholars in media and communication and technology history, cultural and American Studies are likely to find this book most interesting.”-Journal of Communication

“As modern ideas of communication as transmission emerged, so too did the belief in emotions as forces within the body.  Brenton Malin’s Feeling Mediated chronicles these intertwined histories. Malin’s book juxtaposes the idea of media physicalism—that media have direct effects on audiences’ emotions—alongside the history of ‘American cool’ as a desired emotional state, constantly under threat from too-hot media. Feeling Mediated not only contributes to the growing cross-fertilization of media studies and affect theory, it also provides a new account of why, for the last two centuries, each generation has made the same claims for the emotional power of emerging media.”-Jonathan Sterne, author of MP3: The Meaning of a Format

"The most thorough examination we have of how early Americans wrestled with what types of political dissent should be permitted, even promoted, in the new republic they were forming. Martin shows the modern relevance of their debates in ways that all will find valuable—even those who dissent from his views!"—Rogers M. Smith, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania   Democracy is the rule of the people. But what exactly does it mean for a people to rule? Which practices and behaviors are legitimate, and which are democratically suspect?   We generally think of democracy as government by consent; a government of, by, and for the people. This has been true from Locke through Lincoln to the present day. Yet in understandably stressing the importance—indeed, the monumental achievement—of popular consent, we commonly downplay or even denigrate the role of dissent in democratic governments. But in Government by Dissent, Robert W.T. Martin explores the idea that the people most important in a flourishing democracy are those who challenge the status quo.  The American political radicals of the 1790s understood, articulated, and defended the crucial necessity of dissent to democracy. By returning to their struggles, successes, and setbacks, and analyzing their imaginative arguments, Martin recovers a more robust approach to popular politics, one centered on the ever-present need to challenge the status quo and the powerful institutions that both support it and profit from it. Dissent has rarely been the mainstream of democratic politics. But the figures explored here—forgotten farmers as well as revered framers—understood that dissent is always the essential undercurrent of democracy and is often the critical crosscurrent. Only by returning to their political insights can we hope to reinvigorate our own popular politics.

Review
“[…] Martin seeks to understand how different Americans envisioned what he calls a ‘dissentient democracy’ that ‘values dissent as an essential core element.’  As Martin defines his term, dissentient democracy is more than engaging in dissent.  It is a belief that democracy only remains healthy when government tolerates or even encourages dissent.”-American Historical Review

"The author of this book makes an important contribution to the intellectual history of the early American republic by showing how 'dissentient' thought encouraged the development of a more populist democratic political ideology between 1776 and 1801...[Martin] gives us a fresh, useful look at earnestly republican and wisely dissenting theorists of the early republic."-The Historian

"Martin has given us a gift—a timely reminder that ours is a nation born in dissent and nourished on disagreement. With a wealth of illustrative cases he reminds us that we Americans are and always have been a fractious people, and our democracy all the more vital for that."-Terence Ball,Arizona State University

"[H]is incorporation of political theory with traditional historical sources, such as newspapers and contemporary political essays, successfully challenges readers to re-think not only the history of dissent in American politics but its current manifestations, benefits, and limitations."-Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"The most thorough examination we have of how early Americans wrestled with what types of political dissent should be permitted, even promoted, in the new republic they were forming.  Martin shows the modern relevance of their debates in ways that all will find valuable—even those who dissent from his views!"-Rogers M. Smith,Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania

“Government by Dissent is an engaging meditation on one of America’s founding fantasies – the fantasy of democratic self-government. […]  Martin’s work makes a strong case for the continuing relevance of the founding era’s democrats, most of whom have long passed from the nation’s political memory.  In an era when many of our most vocal dissenters are reactionary cynics – Glenn Beck, another contemporary fan of Thomas Paine, comes to mind here – Martin reminds us that democratic dissent is not just an end in itself, but, in its best forms, an aspiration toward a political culture and political system that values a diversity of perspectives, especially those perspectives that have been formed out of a history of exclusion.”-Common-Place

“[Martin] dissolves myths about the era of the American Revolution, showing that the years following it were anything but peaceful...Those with interests in the early national period will find Martin's research a must.  Essential."

At long last, the complex field of feminist legal theory is presented in accessible, teachable form by two of its experts, Nancy Levit and Robert R. M. Verchick. In this outstanding primer, the authors introduce the diverse strands of feminist legal theory and the array of substantive legal issues relevant to women's and gender studies. The book centers on feminist legal theories—including equal treatment theory, cultural feminism, dominance theory, critical race feminism, lesbian feminism, postmodern feminism, and ecofeminism. The authors also address feminist legal methods, such as consciousness raising and storytelling.

The primer demonstrates the ways feminist legal theory operates in real-life contexts, including domestic violence, reproductive rights, workplace discrimination, education, sports, pornography, and global issues of gender. Levit and Verchick highlight a sweeping range of cutting edge topics at the intersection of law and gender, such as single sex schools, women in the military, abortion, same sex marriage, date rape, and the international trafficking in women and girls.

At its core, Feminist Legal Theory shows the importance of the role of law and feminist legal theory in shaping contemporary gender issues.

Review

“Feminist Legal Theory brings together a comprehensive and lucid treatment of feminist theoretical approaches to the most pressing legal problems of our time. This book will serve as an essential desk reference for those who are new to feminist legal theory as well as for those of us who are veterans.”
-Katherine Franke,Columbia Law School

“This excellent primer traces the development of feminist theories in a legal system to which women and feminists are relatively new. The authors traverse various feminist legal theories, describing their inherent differences, as well as their crucial common ground; their influence on the legal world; their successes both perceived and real; and finally, their dynamic nature, which prime activists and academics for social and political change. . . .The book also raises issues of goals unfulfilled and challenges to come by providing an insightfully provoking discussion of diverse issues. It explores more traditionally “feminist” legal topics such as domestic violence and rape, current debates, such as single-sex schools and women in the US military, and larger issues regarding the applicability of feminist legal theories in the face of a shrinking, globalized world.”
-Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law, and Justice

“This book is perfectly designed as a text for undergraduates. The writing is lively and accessible; the topic coverage is broad, interesting, and up-to-date; and the subject of feminist legal theory is represented in many forms. Levit and Verchick invite readers to engage in the debate over law’s impact on gendered controversies, and to select solutions from among competing visions of equality.”
-Choice, Highly Recommended

“An important new assessment, wisely crafted, controversial, provocative, unusual, not just another addition to a settled field.”
-Susan Estrich, author of Sex & Power

Gödel's Proof, by Ernest Nagel, James Newman

In 1931 Kurt Gödel published his fundamental paper, "On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems." This revolutionary paper challenged certain basic assumptions underlying much research in mathematics and logic. Gödel received public recognition of his work in 1951 when he was awarded the first Albert Einstein Award for achievement in the natural sciences—perhaps the highest award of its kind in the United States. The award committee described his work in mathematical logic as "one of the greatest contributions to the sciences in recent times."

However, few mathematicians of the time were equipped to understand the young scholar's complex proof. Ernest Nagel and James Newman provide a readable and accessible explanation to both scholars and non-specialists of the main ideas and broad implications of Gödel's discovery. It offers every educated person with a taste for logic and philosophy the chance to understand a previously difficult and inaccessible subject.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the original publication of Gödel's Proof, New York University Press is proud to publish this special anniversary edition of one of its bestselling and most frequently translated books. With a new introduction by Douglas R. Hofstadter, this book will appeal students, scholars, and professionals in the fields of mathematics, computer science, logic and philosophy, and science.

Amazon.com Review
Gödel's incompleteness theorem--which showed that any robust mathematical system contains statements that are true yet unprovable within the system--is an anomaly in 20th-century mathematics. Its conclusions are as strange as they are profound, but, unlike other recent theorems of comparable importance, grasping the main steps of the proof requires little more than high school algebra and a bit of patience. Ernest Nagel and James Newman's original text was one of the first (and best) to bring Gödel's ideas to a mass audience. With brevity and clarity, the volume described the historical context that made Gödel's theorem so paradigm-shattering. Where the first edition fell down, however, was in the guts of the proof itself; the brevity that served so well in defining the problem made their rendering of Gödel's solution so dense as to be nearly indigestible.

This reissuance of Nagel and Newman's classic has been vastly improved by the deft editing of Douglas Hofstadter, a protégé of Nagel's and himself a popularizer of Gödel's work. In the second edition, Hofstadter reworks significant sections of the book, clarifying and correcting here, adding necessary detail there. In the few instances in which his writing diverges from the spirit of the original, it is to emphasize the interplay between formal mathematical deduction and meta-mathematical reasoning--a subject explored in greater depth in Hofstadter's other delightful writings. --Clark Williams-Derry

Fastidious author make reading difficult
By Denn
I believe this book taught me something.... however it was not what I was expecting. I have read mathematics book in the past like "Prime Obsession," "Unknown Quantity," and "The Code Book" all being extremely interesting and making me die to continue reading. I was hoping this book would be like those. I found the authors, both mathematicians, to be extremely fact-oriented, often taking 4 sentences to explain something where a single sentence would have sufficed. The footnotes, taking 1/3 of the bottom of every other page, exacerbate the situation. I wanted a book that would capture my imagination; this book merely reinforced all the facts I can learn on Youtube with the exception of one (below). The mention of Godel's proof is merely 3 or 4 pages that vaguely review the summary Godel arrived at. This vague summary was not satisfying to me.

The reason I gave this 3 stars is because I learned about meta-mathematics. I also learned about systems where axioms are defined and how theorems in the system naturally follow from the axioms. Systems are everywhere, from playing chess to playing soccer and to driving. Fundamental rules are what keep these systems in flow. I liked how the authors dived into this a bit and because it is a short book I don't believe I wasted much time. The boring tone of this book reminded me of "GEB;" I suffered around 30 hours through GEB getting 70% done when I stopped reading, put the book away, and around 4 months later I gave it to a friend. I never heard from my friend or his thoughts on the book, I suppose he must have tossed it in the trash (which is fine with me).

Feels dated
By michael lamb
I followed the explanations. However, now I understand the theorems, I think the authors could have done a better job.

Why are they using Godel's prime-factor numbering scheme for encoding statements? ASCII is far more accessible to a modern computer-literate audience. Also the authors skip over primitive recursion which feels like a big leap. I have seen it explained elsewhere in terms of computability. The book was originally written in the 1950s so it's understandable why the authors didn't go that route, but explaining in more detail why Dem and Sub are computable functions would be an improvement.

If you want to know what Godel wrote then I assume this book follows his work quite accurately. If you want to understand the theorems there are better texts.

Allowed Me To Understand
By Tom Gray
This book allowed me to understand Godel's proof and its implications. This surprised me and I would imagine even more surprise the professors to attempted to teach me the elements of mathematics. The book is written in an open and accessible style that enabled me to understand the work. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the often cited but understood by few theorem

The United States Constitution: Two Hundred Years of Anti-Federalist, Abolitionist, Feminist, Muckraking, Progressive, and Especially Socia

"How can anyone claim to really understand our Constitution without knowing what these critical traditions had to say?"
—Michael Wallace, Professor of History, John Jay College.

"A real contribution to the subject of democracy and liberalism."
—John Ehrenberg.

"Does a marvelous job of returning the Constitution to its proper sphere, the product of the rough and tumble of politics."
— Malcom M. Feely, author of Judicial Policy Making and the Modern State.

"The United States Constitution is a provocative book, much needed for overdue rethinking on the Constitution proper and its amendments. By making available "the underside of criticism and protest that has accompanied the Constitution from its inception" the book cuts through a mountainous mass of conventional bombast, one-sided versions and outright fabrications regarding the Constitution. In clarifying what makes the Constitution's clock tick, the book lives up to its subtitle.
—Ira Gollobin, National Emergency Civil Rights Committee

NEVER BEFORE ASSEMBLED IN A SINGLE VOLUME—the major writings on the Constitution from six critical traditions. Here is THE OTHER SIDE in most of the key disputes over the Constitution from 1789 to the present, the side that was barely heard during the recent Bicentennial celebrations. Yet, it was often the popular side, raising many troublesome questions about the nature of American democracy that still remain to be answered. Now that the applause has subsided, every fair- minded person will want to know what these critics of the Constitution have to say about who did, and is still doing, what to whom, and why.

Section 1 outlines the main events and problems that led up to and contributed to the calling of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Section 2 concentrates on what actually happened at the convention. Section 3 deals with the two-hundred-year history of interpretations and amendments that followed. Section 4 offers a number of ideas that should prove helpful in constructing the adequate theory of the Constitution that still eludes us.

Skillfully woven into one volume the forty contributors include voices as varied as those of Gore Vidal, I.F. Stone, Ralph Nader, E.P. Thompson, Howard Zinn, Sheldon S. Wolin, Joan Hoff, Karl Marx, Jackson Turner Main, Charles A. Beard, and W.E.B. Du Bois joined--perhaps surprisingly--by Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Thurgood Marshall.

Israel's Death Hierarchy: Casualty Aversion in a Militarized Democracy (Warfare and Culture), by Yagil Levy

2012 Winner of the Shapiro Award for the Best Book in Israel Studies, presented by the Association for Israel Studies Whose life is worth more?   That is the question that states inevitably face during wartime. Which troops are thrown to the first lines of battle and which ones remain relatively intact? How can various categories of civilian populations be protected? And when front and rear are porous, whose life should receive priority, those of soldiers or those of civilians? In Israel’s Death Hierarchy, Yagil Levy uses Israel as a compelling case study to explore the global dynamics and security implications of casualty sensitivity. Israel, Levy argues, originally chose to risk soldiers mobilized from privileged classes, more than civilians and other soldiers. However, with the mounting of casualty sensitivity, the state gradually restructured what Levy calls its “death hierarchy” to favor privileged soldiers over soldiers drawn from lower classes and civilians, and later to place enemy civilians at the bottom of the hierarchy by the use of heavy firepower. The state thus shifted risk from soldiers to civilians. As the Gaza offensive of 2009 demonstrates, this new death hierarchy has opened Israel to global criticism.

Review
"Yagil Levy provides powerful contribution to the debate about the degree to which liberal democracies are ‘casualty sensitive.’ With  his concept of ‘death hierarchy’ he reflects on whether these states tend to favor their soldiers' lives over those of enemy civilians and how far this is explained by the declining motivation among  their own privileged groups to sacrifice their lives in the military. Although focused on the case of Israel, the argument encompasses other cases and will appeal to scholars of ‘casualty aversion’ on both sides of the Atlantic."-Christopher Dandeker,Co-Director, King's Centre for Military Health Research

"This is a thought-provoking book."-David Benjamin,Advocate/Lieutenant Colonel (Res.) IDF; Dir. of SILS (Security and International Law Specialists)

"A superb analysis of the relationship between the changing social structure in Israel, the makeup of its military, and the resulting strategic posture. It is unique in that it explores these relationships through the analysis of the social and economic characteristics of the casualties in Israel’s limited conflicts with the Palestinians and with Lebanon. It also blends sociological and political theories of civil-military relations in a manner that is insightful and thought-provoking. Anyone who is interested in societal-military relations and in Israeli society and politics should put this book on top of their reading list."-Zeev Maoz,Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of California, Davis

"Levy effectively blends theory and case analysis to explore the underlying social dynamics that influence how society responds to the threats and perils of war. In so doing he bridges the wide gap between IR/Political Science and Sociology."-Patricia M. Shields,Texas State University

"Levy has done an outstanding job with this book by his extensive and intensive review of materials relevant to the theme of this book, and his careful elucidation of related issues."-BIZ INDIA

Heavily biased, Often ignores facts.
By Leehu Zysberg
The book reads like an opinion paper. Coming from an academic it may lead people to regard assertions made in it as facts. The book is often one sided and ignores a wide range of evidence contra-indicating his claims.
