“Brilliant.”—Time “Admirable, rigorous. De Waal [is] a wise and patient reporter.”—The New York Review of Books “Never have all the twists and turns, sad carnage, and bullheadedness on all side been better described—or indeed, better explained…Offers a deeper and more compelling account of the conflict than anyone before.”—Foreign Affairs Since its publication in 2003, the first edition of Black Garden has become the definitive study of how Armenia and Azerbaijan, two southern Soviet republics, were pulled into a conflict that helped bring them to independence, spell the end the Soviet Union, and plunge a region of great strategic importance into a decade of turmoil. This important volume is both a careful reconstruction of the history of the Nagorny Karabakh conflict since 1988 and on-the-spot reporting of the convoluted aftermath. Part contemporary history, part travel book, part political analysis, the book is based on six months traveling through the south Caucasus, more than 120 original interviews in the region, Moscow, and Washington, and unique historical primary sources, such as Politburo archives. The historical chapters trace how the conflict lay unresolved in the Soviet era; how Armenian and Azerbaijani societies unfroze it; how the Politiburo failed to cope with the crisis; how the war was fought and ended; how the international community failed to sort out the conflict. What emerges is a complex and subtle portrait of a beautiful and fascinating region, blighted by historical prejudice and conflict. The revisedand updated 10th-year anniversary edition includes a new forward, a new chapter covering developments up to-2011, such as the election of new presidents in both countries, Azerbaijan’s oil boom and the new arms race in the region, and a new conclusion, analysing the reasons for the intractability of the conflict and whether there are any prospects for its resolution. Telling the story of the first conflict to shake Mikhail Gorbachev's Soviet Union, Black Garden remains a central account of the reality of the post-Soviet world.

Review
"This book is helpful because in order to craft a final resolution to the conflict, one must understand what events transpired in the first place. De Waal's book significantly contributes to this purpose and establishes itself as one of the standard works for understanding this conflict."-Parameters

Arguably the best introductory book on the subject.
By Academic Refugee
Disregard the hyperbolic one star reviews. Sadly, they represent the blind passions and willful ignorance that is prevalent on either side of the conflict. Sometimes the truth hurts, and when the people of Armenia and Azerbaijan are willing to accept hard truths, there may finally be progress in the region.
The glowing praise this book has received from worthy critics is well-earned, and I cannot recommend a better introduction to the dispute over Nagorno Karabakh. This is an acute and balanced view of the region, its politics, and the small-minded xenophobia (on both sides) that continues to drive the dispute. While I've only read the previous edition of this fine book, I'm sure the updated version will only serve to strengthen de Waal's fantastic overview of the region and its political climate.
Highly recommended.

Invaluable Primer on a Remote Yet Significant Conflict
By Peter Ramming
Thomas de Waal's "Black Garden" is the best place to start (especially for readers limited to English) for a balanced and fairly in-depth treatment of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Having at the time followed as closely as I could through newspaper and magazine reports the 1991-94 "hot" war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the autonomous Armenian-majority enclave of Nagorno Karabakh, I was eager to read a more formal, retrospective and detailed historical account of the Nagorno Karabakh War. In this sense de Waal's book largely succeeds.
de Waal has done a lot of on-the-ground reporting in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia, interviewing scores of participants at all levels and from all sides. Indeed, at 328 pages of text, "Black Garden" is probably 1/3 an account of the 1991-94 fighting, 1/3 a portrait of the human dimension of the conflict, and 1/3 a more sweeping historical tableaux of the South Caucasus as a whole. I was looking mainly for a military history of the 1991-94 war, but I found this more comprehensive treatment worthwhile and educational.
Thus I learned that even into the early 20th c. the current Armenian capital of Yerevan was predominately a Persian-culture city inside the Russian Empire, with most of the Armenian heartland to the west around Mt. Ararat and Lake Van. It was only with the onset of the Turkish massacres of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 that huge waves of Armenians moved east into what is today the sovereign nation of Armenia. I learned that Nagorno Karabakh was considered the eastern highland bulwark of Armenian territory against Turkic lands sweeping eastward. I learned that the internal history of the Soviet Union was far from static, with Armenians and Azeris jockeying for primacy in Nagorno Karabakh under Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, and Gorbachev, and even sometimes assassinating their foes under the noses of the KGB. And I learned that many of the later Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders were the best of friends and comrades in the Soviet era and continued to speak fondly of each other even after all the bloodshed of 1991-94; and that many common Armenians and Azerbaijanis held similar kind feelings for one another.
"Black Garden" was first published in 2003, and then reissued with new chapters in 2013. This is helpful because though the more intensive combat ended with a ceasefire in 1994, this is far from a "frozen conflict," with Armenian and Azerbaijani forces facing each other along a 150 mile "line of contact," no international peacekeeping forces arrayed between, and scores of casualties resulting each year. And though Armenia prevailed in the 1991-94 fighting and continues to occupy 90% of Nagorno Karabakh and a ring of Azerbaijani territory around it for a total of 14% of Azerbaijan, the Azeris remain determined to regain this territory and, with a their new-found oil wealth, continue to build up their military with this eventual reconquest as their principal national obsession. Nagorno Karabakh remains a region to watch.

Indispensable work on the subject
By G. Z. Gzirian
The book represents the most thorough, thoughtful, and balanced account and analysis of the events and issues surrounding Nagorny Karabakh. The author’s knowledge of the subject, history of the region, and passion for its people is amazing. The long suffering people of Armenia and Azerbaijan are lucky that in Mr. De Waal they have such a keen and involved observer. Besides, the book is very engaging, and reads as a thriller.
