In 1931 Kurt Gödel published his fundamental paper, "On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems." This revolutionary paper challenged certain basic assumptions underlying much research in mathematics and logic. Gödel received public recognition of his work in 1951 when he was awarded the first Albert Einstein Award for achievement in the natural sciences—perhaps the highest award of its kind in the United States. The award committee described his work in mathematical logic as "one of the greatest contributions to the sciences in recent times."
However, few mathematicians of the time were equipped to understand the young scholar's complex proof. Ernest Nagel and James Newman provide a readable and accessible explanation to both scholars and non-specialists of the main ideas and broad implications of Gödel's discovery. It offers every educated person with a taste for logic and philosophy the chance to understand a previously difficult and inaccessible subject.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the original publication of Gödel's Proof, New York University Press is proud to publish this special anniversary edition of one of its bestselling and most frequently translated books. With a new introduction by Douglas R. Hofstadter, this book will appeal students, scholars, and professionals in the fields of mathematics, computer science, logic and philosophy, and science.

Amazon.com Review
Gödel's incompleteness theorem--which showed that any robust mathematical system contains statements that are true yet unprovable within the system--is an anomaly in 20th-century mathematics. Its conclusions are as strange as they are profound, but, unlike other recent theorems of comparable importance, grasping the main steps of the proof requires little more than high school algebra and a bit of patience. Ernest Nagel and James Newman's original text was one of the first (and best) to bring Gödel's ideas to a mass audience. With brevity and clarity, the volume described the historical context that made Gödel's theorem so paradigm-shattering. Where the first edition fell down, however, was in the guts of the proof itself; the brevity that served so well in defining the problem made their rendering of Gödel's solution so dense as to be nearly indigestible.
This reissuance of Nagel and Newman's classic has been vastly improved by the deft editing of Douglas Hofstadter, a protégé of Nagel's and himself a popularizer of Gödel's work. In the second edition, Hofstadter reworks significant sections of the book, clarifying and correcting here, adding necessary detail there. In the few instances in which his writing diverges from the spirit of the original, it is to emphasize the interplay between formal mathematical deduction and meta-mathematical reasoning--a subject explored in greater depth in Hofstadter's other delightful writings. --Clark Williams-Derry

Fastidious author make reading difficult
By Denn
I believe this book taught me something.... however it was not what I was expecting. I have read mathematics book in the past like "Prime Obsession," "Unknown Quantity," and "The Code Book" all being extremely interesting and making me die to continue reading. I was hoping this book would be like those. I found the authors, both mathematicians, to be extremely fact-oriented, often taking 4 sentences to explain something where a single sentence would have sufficed. The footnotes, taking 1/3 of the bottom of every other page, exacerbate the situation. I wanted a book that would capture my imagination; this book merely reinforced all the facts I can learn on Youtube with the exception of one (below). The mention of Godel's proof is merely 3 or 4 pages that vaguely review the summary Godel arrived at. This vague summary was not satisfying to me.
The reason I gave this 3 stars is because I learned about meta-mathematics. I also learned about systems where axioms are defined and how theorems in the system naturally follow from the axioms. Systems are everywhere, from playing chess to playing soccer and to driving. Fundamental rules are what keep these systems in flow. I liked how the authors dived into this a bit and because it is a short book I don't believe I wasted much time. The boring tone of this book reminded me of "GEB;" I suffered around 30 hours through GEB getting 70% done when I stopped reading, put the book away, and around 4 months later I gave it to a friend. I never heard from my friend or his thoughts on the book, I suppose he must have tossed it in the trash (which is fine with me).

Feels dated
By michael lamb
I followed the explanations. However, now I understand the theorems, I think the authors could have done a better job.
Why are they using Godel's prime-factor numbering scheme for encoding statements? ASCII is far more accessible to a modern computer-literate audience. Also the authors skip over primitive recursion which feels like a big leap. I have seen it explained elsewhere in terms of computability. The book was originally written in the 1950s so it's understandable why the authors didn't go that route, but explaining in more detail why Dem and Sub are computable functions would be an improvement.
If you want to know what Godel wrote then I assume this book follows his work quite accurately. If you want to understand the theorems there are better texts.

Allowed Me To Understand
By Tom Gray
This book allowed me to understand Godel's proof and its implications. This surprised me and I would imagine even more surprise the professors to attempted to teach me the elements of mathematics. The book is written in an open and accessible style that enabled me to understand the work. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the often cited but understood by few theorem
